ਸ਼੍ਰੀ-ਭਗਵਾਨ੍ ਉਵਾਚ — Bhagavan Sri Krishna said; ਇਮਮ੍ — this; ਵਿਵਸ੍ਵਤੇ — unto the sun-god; ਯੋਗਮ੍ — the science of one’s relationship to the Supreme; ਪ੍ਰੋਕ੍ਤਵਾਨ੍ — instructed; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਅਵ੍ਯਯਮ੍ — imperishable; ਵਿਵਸ੍ਵਾਨ੍ — Vivasvān (the sun-god’s name); ਮਨਵੇ — unto the father of mankind (of the name Vaivasvata); ਪ੍ਰਾਹ — told; ਮਨੁਃ — the father of mankind; ਇਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਵਾਕਵੇ — unto King Ikṣvāku; ਅਬ੍ਰਵੀਤ੍ — said.
Translation
ਭਗਵਾਨ੍, Śrī Kriṣṇa, said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvān, and Vivasvān instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Ikṣvāku.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਏਵਂ ਪਰਂਪਰਾਪ੍ਰਾਪ੍ਤਮਿਮਂ ਰਾਜਰ੍ਸ਼ਯੋ ਵਿਦੁਃ ।
ਸ ਕਾਲੇਨੇਹ ਮਹਤਾ ਯੋਗੇ ਨਸ਼੍ਟਃ ਪਰਂਤਪ ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning
ਏਵਮ੍ — thus; ਪਰਂਪਰਾ — by disciplic succession; ਪ੍ਰਾਪ੍ਤਮ੍ — received; ਇਮਮ੍ — this science; ਰਾਜ-ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਯਃ — the saintly kings; ਵਿਦੁਃ — understood; ਸਃ — that knowledge; ਕਾਲੇਨ — in the course of time; ਇਹ — in this world; ਮਹਤਾ — great; ਯੋਗਃ — the science of one’s relationship with the Supreme; ਨਸ਼੍ਟਃ — scattered; ਪਰਮ੍-ਤਪ — O Arjuna, subduer of the enemies.
Translation
This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸ ਏਵਾਯਂ ਮਯਾ ਤੇਦ੍ਯ ਯੋਗਃ ਪ੍ਰੋਕ੍ਤਃ ਪੁਰਾਤਨਃ ।
ਭਕ੍ਤੋਸਿ ਮੇ ਸਖਾ ਚੇਤਿ ਰਹਸ੍ਯਂ ਹ੍ਯੇਤਦੁਤ੍ਤਮਮ੍ ॥ 3 ॥

ਸਃ — the same; ਏਵ — certainly; ਅਯਮ੍ — this; ਮਯਾ — by Me; ਤੇ — unto you; ਅਦ੍ਯ — today; ਯੋਗਃ — the science of yoga; ਪ੍ਰੋਕ੍ਤਃ — spoken; ਪੁਰਾਤਨਃ — very old; ਭਕ੍ਤਃ — devotee; ਅਸਿ — you are; ਮੇ — My; ਸਖਾ — friend; ਚ — also; ਇਤਿ — therefore; ਰਹਸ੍ਯਮ੍ — mystery; ਹਿ — certainly; ਏਤਤ੍ — this; ਉਤ੍ਤਮਮ੍ — transcendental.
Translation
That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by Me to you because you are My devotee as well as My friend and can therefore understand the transcendental mystery of this science.

ਅਰ੍ਜੁਨ ਉਵਾਚ
ਅਪਰਂ ਭਵਤੋ ਜਨ੍ਮ ਪਰਂ ਜਨ੍ਮ ਵਿਵਸ੍ਵਤਃ ।

Translation
Arjuna said: The sun-god Vivasvān is senior by birth to You. How am I to understand that in the beginning You instructed this science to him?

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ-ਭਗਵਾਨ੍ ਉਵਾਚ — the Personality of Godhead said; ਬਹੂਨਿ — many; ਮੇ — of Mine; ਵ੍ਯਤੀਤਾਨਿ — have passed; ਜਨ੍ਮਾਨਿ — births; ਤਵ — of yours; ਚ — and also; ਅਰ੍ਜੁਨ — O Arjuna; ਤਾਨਿ — those; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਵੇਦ — do know; ਸਰ੍ਵਾਣਿ — all; ਨ — not; ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ — you; ਵੇਤ੍ਥ — know; ਪਰਮ੍-ਤਪ — O subduer of the enemy.
Translation
The Personality of Godhead said: Many, many births both you and I have passed. I can remember all of them, but you cannot, O subduer of the enemy!

ਅਜੋਪਿ ਸਨ੍ਨਵ੍ਯਯਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਭੂਤਾਨਾਮੀਸ਼੍ਵਰੋਪਿ ਸਨ੍ ।
ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਂ ਸ੍ਵਾਮਧਿਸ਼੍ਠਾਯ ਸਂਭਵਾਮ੍ਯਾਤ੍ਮਮਾਯਯਾ ॥ 6 ॥
Meaning
ਅਜਃ — unborn; ਅਪਿ — although; ਸਨ੍ — being so; ਅਵ੍ਯਯ — without deterioration; ਆਤ੍ਮਾ — body; ਭੂਤਾਨਾਮ੍ — of all those who are born; ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰਃ — the Supreme Lord; ਅਪਿ — although; ਸਨ੍ — being so; ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਮ੍ — in the transcendental form; ਸ੍ਵਾਮ੍ — of Myself; ਅਧਿਸ਼੍ਠਾਯ — being so situated; ਸਂਭਵਾਮਿ — I do incarnate; ਆਤ੍ਮ-ਮਾਯਯਾ — by My internal energy.
Translation
Although I am unborn and My transcendental body never deteriorates, and although I am the Lord of all living entities, I still appear in every millennium in My original transcendental form.

ਯਦਾ ਯਦਾ ਹਿ ਧਰ੍ਮਸ੍ਯ ਗ੍ਲਾਨਿਰ੍ਭਵਤਿ ਭਾਰਤ ।
ਅਭ੍ਯੁਤ੍ਥਾਨਮਧਰ੍ਮਸ੍ਯ ਤਦਾਤ੍ਮਾਨਂ ਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਜਾਮ੍ਯਹਮ੍ ॥ 7 ॥

ਯਦਾ ਯਦਾ — whenever and wherever; ਹਿ — certainly; ਧਰ੍ਮਸ੍ਯ — of religion; ਗ੍ਲਾਨਿਃ — discrepancies; ਭਵਤਿ — become manifested; ਭਾਰਤ — O descendant of Bharata; ਅਭ੍ਯੁਤ੍ਥਾਨਮ੍ — predominance; ਅਧਰ੍ਮਸ੍ਯ — of irreligion; ਤਦਾ — at that time; ਆਤ੍ਮਾਨਮ੍ — self; ਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਜਾਮਿ — manifest; ਅਹਮ੍ — I.
Translation
Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion – at that time I descend Myself.

ਪਰਿਤ੍ਰਾਣਾਯ ਸਾਧੁਨਾਂ ਵਿਨਾਸ਼ਾਯ ਚ ਦੁਸ਼੍ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਮ੍ ।
ਧਰ੍ਮਸਂਸ੍ਥਾਨਾਰ੍ਥਾਯ ਸਂਭਵਾਮਿ ਯੁਗੇ ਯੁਗੇ ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning
ਪਰਿਤ੍ਰਾਣਾਯ — for the deliverance; ਸਾਧੂਨਾਮ੍ — of the devotees; ਵਿਨਾਸ਼ਾਯ — for the annihilation; ਚ — and; ਦੁਸ਼੍ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਮ੍ — of the miscreants; ਧਰ੍ਮ — principles of religion; ਸਂਸ੍ਥਾਪਨ-ਅਰ੍ਥਾਯ — to reestablish; ਸਂਭਵਾਮਿ — I do appear; ਯੁਗੇ — millennium; ਯੁਗੇ — after millennium.
Translation
To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਜਨ੍ਮ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਚ ਮੇ ਦਿਵ੍ਯਮੇਵਂ ਯੋ ਵੇਤ੍ਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਤਃ ।
ਤ੍ਯਕ੍ਤ੍ਵਾ ਦੇਹਂ ਪੁਨਰ੍ਜਨ੍ਮ ਨੈਤਿ ਮਾਮੇਤਿ ਸੋਰ੍ਜੁਨ ॥ 9 ॥

ਜਨ੍ਮ — birth; ਕਰ੍ਮ — work; ਚ — also; ਮੇ — of Mine; ਦਿਵ੍ਯਮ੍ — transcendental; ਏਵਮ੍ — like this; ਯਃ — anyone who; ਵੇਤ੍ਤਿ — knows; ਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਤਃ — in reality; ਤ੍ਯਕ੍ਤ੍ਵਾ — leaving aside; ਦੇਹਮ੍ — this body; ਪੁਨਃ — again; ਜਨ੍ਮ — birth; ਨ — never; ਏਤਿ — does attain; ਮਾਮ੍ — unto Me; ਏਤਿ — does attain; ਸਃ — he; ਅਰ੍ਜੁਨ — O Arjuna.
Translation
One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵੀਤਰਾਗਭਯਕ੍ਰੋਧਾ ਮਨ੍ਮਯਾ ਮਾਮੁਪਾਸ਼੍ਰਿਤਾਃ ।
ਬਹਵੋ ਜ੍ਞਾਨਤਪਸਾ ਪੂਤਾ ਮਦ੍ਭਆਵਮਾਗਤਾਃ ॥ 10 ॥
Meaning
ਵੀਤ — freed from; ਰਾਗ — attachment; ਭਯ — fear; ਕ੍ਰੋਧਾਃ — and anger; ਮਤ੍-ਮਯਾਃ — fully in Me; ਮਾਮ੍ — in Me; ਉਪਾਸ਼੍ਰਿਤਾਃ — being fully situated; ਬਹਵਃ — many; ਜ੍ਞਾਨ — of knowledge; ਤਪਸਾ — by the penance; ਪੂਤਾਃ — being purified; ਮਤ੍-ਭਾਵਮ੍ — transcendental love for Me; ਆਗਤਾਃ — attained.
Translation
Being freed from attachment, fear and anger, being fully absorbed in Me and taking refuge in Me, many, many persons in the past became purified by knowledge of Me – and thus they all attained transcendental love for Me.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਯੇ ਯਥਾ ਮਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਂਤੇ ਤਾਂਸ੍ਤਥੈਵ ਭਜਾਮ੍ਯਹਮ੍ ।
ਮਮ ਵਰ੍ਤ੍ਮਾਨੁਵਰ੍ਤਂਤੇ ਮਨੁਸ਼੍ਯਾਃ ਪਾਰ੍ਥ ਸਰ੍ਵਸ਼ਃ ॥ 11 ॥
Meaning
ਯੇ — all who; ਯਥਾ — as; ਮਾਮ੍ — unto Me; ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਂਤੇ — surrender; ਤਾਨ੍ — them; ਤਥਾ — so; ਏਵ — certainly; ਭਜਾਮਿ — reward; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਮਮ — My; ਵਰ੍ਤ੍ਮ — path; ਅਨੁਵਰ੍ਤਂਤੇ — follow; ਮਨੁਸ਼੍ਯਾਃ — all men; ਪਾਰ੍ਥ — O son of Prithā; ਸਰ੍ਵਸ਼ਃ — in all respects.
Translation
As all surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. Everyone follows My path in all respects, O son of Prithā.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਕਾਂਕ੍ਸ਼ਂਤਃ ਕਰ੍ਮਣਾਂ ਸਿਦ੍ਧਿਂ ਯਜਂਤ ਇਹ ਦੇਵਤਾ ।
ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਪ੍ਰਂ ਹਿ ਮਾਨੁਸ਼ੇ ਲੋਕੇ ਸਿਦ੍ਧਿਰ੍ਭਵਤਿ ਕਰ੍ਮਜਾ ॥ 12 ॥
Meaning
ਕਾਂਕ੍ਸ਼ਂਤਃ — desiring; ਕਰ੍ਮਣਾਮ੍ — of fruitive activities; ਸਿਦ੍ਧਿਮ੍ — perfection; ਯਜਂਤੇ — they worship by sacrifices; ਇਹ — in the material world; ਦੇਵਤਾਃ — the demigods; ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਪ੍ਰਮ੍ — very quickly; ਹਿ — certainly; ਮਾਨੁਸ਼ੇ — in human society; ਲੋਕੇ — within this world; ਸਿਦ੍ਧਿਃ — success; ਭਵਤਿ — comes; ਕਰ੍ਮ-ਜਾ — from fruitive work.
Translation
Men in this world desire success in fruitive activities, and therefore they worship the demigods. Quickly, of course, men get results from fruitive work in this world.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਚਾਤੁਰ੍ਵਰ੍ਣ੍ਯਂ ਮਯਾ ਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਂ ਗੁਣਕਰ੍ਮਵਿਭਾਗਸ਼ਃ ।
ਤਸ੍ਯ ਕਰ੍ਤਾਰਮਪਿ ਮਾਂ ਵਿਦ੍ਧ੍ਯਕਰ੍ਤਾਰਮਵ੍ਯਯਮ੍ ॥ 13 ॥
Meaning
ਚਾਤੁਃ-ਵਰ੍ਣ੍ਯਮ੍ — the four divisions of human society; ਮਯਾ — by Me; ਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਮ੍ — created; ਗੁਣ — of quality; ਕਰ੍ਮ — and work; ਵਿਭਾਗਸ਼ਃ — in terms of division; ਤਸ੍ਯ — of that; ਕਰ੍ਤਾਰਮ੍ — the father; ਅਪਿ — although; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਵਿਦ੍ਧਿ — you may know; ਅਕਰ੍ਤਾਰਮ੍ — as the nondoer; ਅਵ੍ਯਯਮ੍ — unchangeable.
Translation
According to the three modes of material nature and the work associated with them, the four divisions of human society are created by Me. And although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the nondoer, being unchangeable.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨ ਮਾਂ ਕਰ੍ਮਾਣਿ ਲਿਂਪਂਤਿ ਨ ਮੇ ਕਰ੍ਮਫਲੇ ਸ੍ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਾ ।
ਇਤਿ ਮਾਂ ਯੋਭਿਜਾਨਾਤਿ ਕਰ੍ਮਭਿਰ੍ਨ ਸ ਬਧ੍ਯਤੇ ॥ 14 ॥
Meaning
ਨ — never; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਕਰ੍ਮਾਣਿ — all kinds of work; ਲਿਂਪਂਤਿ — do affect; ਨ — nor; ਮੇ — My; ਕਰ੍ਮ-ਫਲੇ — in fruitive action; ਸ੍ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਾ — aspiration; ਇਤਿ — thus; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਯਃ — one who; ਅਭਿਜਾਨਾਤਿ — does know; ਕਰ੍ਮਭਿਃ — by the reaction of such work; ਨ — never; ਸਃ — he; ਬਧ੍ਯਤੇ — becomes entangled.
Translation
There is no work that affects Me; nor do I aspire for the fruits of action. One who understands this truth about Me also does not become entangled in the fruitive reactions of work.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਏਵਂ ਜ੍ਞਾਤ੍ਵਾ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਂ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਪੂਰ੍ਵੈਰਪਿ ਮੁਮੁਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਭਿਃ ।
ਕੁਰੁ ਕਰ੍ਮੈਵ ਤਸ੍ਮਾਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਂ ਪੂਰ੍ਵੈਃ ਪੂਰ੍ਵਤਰਂ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਮ੍ ॥ 15 ॥
Meaning
ਏਵਮ੍ — thus; ਜ੍ਞਾਤ੍ਵਾ — knowing well; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਮ੍ — was performed; ਕਰ੍ਮ — work; ਪੂਰ੍ਵੈਃ — by past authorities; ਅਪਿ — indeed; ਮੁਮੁਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਭਿਃ — who attained liberation; ਕੁਰੁ — just perform; ਕਰ੍ਮ — prescribed duty; ਏਵ — certainly; ਤਸ੍ਮਾਤ੍ — therefore; ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ — you; ਪੂਰ੍ਵੈਃ — by the predecessors; ਪੂਰ੍ਵ-ਤਰਮ੍ — in ancient times; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਮ੍ — as performed.
Translation
All the liberated souls in ancient times acted with this understanding of My transcendental nature. Therefore you should perform your duty, following in their footsteps.

ਕਿਂ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਕਿਮਕਰ੍ਮੇਤਿ ਕਵਯੋਪ੍ਯਤ੍ਰ ਮੋਹਿਤਾਃ ।
ਤਤ੍ਤੇ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਪ੍ਰਵਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯਾਮਿ ਯਜ੍ਜ੍ਞਾਤ੍ਵਾ ਮੋਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯਸੇਸ਼ਉਭਾਤ੍ ॥ 16 ॥

ਕਿਮ੍ — what is; ਕਰ੍ਮ — action; ਕਿਮ੍ — what is; ਅਕਰ੍ਮ — inaction; ਇਤਿ — thus; ਕਵਯਃ — the intelligent; ਅਪਿ — also; ਅਤ੍ਰ — in this matter; ਮੋਹਿਤਾਃ — are bewildered; ਤਤ੍ — that; ਤੇ — unto you; ਕਰ੍ਮ — work; ਪ੍ਰਵਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯਾਮਿ — I shall explain; ਯਤ੍ — which; ਜ੍ਞਾਤ੍ਵਾ — knowing; ਮੋਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯਸੇ — you will be liberated; ਅਸ਼ੁਭਾਤ੍ — from ill fortune.
Translation
Even the intelligent are bewildered in determining what is action and what is inaction. Now I shall explain to you what action is, knowing which you shall be liberated from all misfortune.

ਕਰ੍ਮਣੋ ਹ੍ਯਪਿ ਬੋਦ੍ਧਵ੍ਯਂ ਬੋਦ੍ਧਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਵਿਕਰ੍ਮਣਃ ।
ਅਕਰ੍ਮਣਸ਼੍ਚ ਬੋਦ੍ਧਵ੍ਯਂ ਗਹਨਾ ਕਰ੍ਮਣੋ ਗਤਿਃ ॥ 17 ॥

ਕਰ੍ਮਣਃ — of work; ਹਿ — certainly; ਅਪਿ — also; ਬੋਦ੍ਧਵ੍ਯਮ੍ — should be understood; ਬੋਦ੍ਧਵ੍ਯਮ੍ — should be understood; ਚ — also; ਵਿਕਰ੍ਮਣਃ — of forbidden work; ਅਕਰ੍ਮਣਃ — of inaction; ਚ — also; ਬੋਦ੍ਧਵ੍ਯਮ੍ — should be understood; ਗਹਨਾ — very difficult; ਕਰ੍ਮਣਃ — of work; ਗਤਿਃ — entrance.
Translation
The intricacies of action are very hard to understand. Therefore one should know properly what action is, what forbidden action is and what inaction is.

ਕਰ੍ਮਣ੍ਯਕਰ੍ਮ ਯਃ ਪਸ਼੍ਯੇਦਕਰ੍ਮਣਿ ਚ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਯਃ ।
ਸ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਮਾਨ੍ਮਨੁਸ਼੍ਯੇਸ਼ੁ ਸ ਯੁਕ੍ਤਃ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸ੍ਨਕਰ੍ਮਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ ॥ 18 ॥

Translation
One is understood to be in full knowledge whose every endeavor is devoid of desire for sense gratification. He is said by sages to be a worker for whom the reactions of work have been burned up by the fire of perfect knowledge.

Such a man of understanding acts with mind and intelligence perfectly controlled, gives up all sense of proprietorship over his possessions and acts only for the bare necessities of life. Thus working, he is not affected by sinful reactions.

Still others, who are inclined to the process of breath restraint to remain in trance, practice by offering the movement of the outgoing breath into the incoming, and the incoming breath into the outgoing, and thus at last remain in trance, stopping all breathing. Others, curtailing the eating process, offer the outgoing breath into itself as a sacrifice.

All these different types of sacrifice are approved by the Vedas, and all of them are born of different types of work. Knowing them as such, you will become liberated.

Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.

Translation
Having obtained real knowledge from a self-realized soul, you will never fall again into such illusion, for by this knowledge you will see that all living beings are but part of the Supreme, or, in other words, that they are Mine.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਪਿ ਚੇਦਸਿ ਪਾਪੇਭ੍ਯਃ ਸਰ੍ਵੇਭ੍ਯਃ ਪਾਪਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਤਮਃ ।
ਸਰ੍ਵਂ ਜ੍ਞਾਨਪ੍ਲਵੇਨੈਵ ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਜਿਨਂ ਸਂਤਰਿਸ਼੍ਯਸਿ ॥ 36 ॥
Meaning
ਅਪਿ — even; ਚੇਤ੍ — if; ਅਸਿ — you are; ਪਾਪੇਭ੍ਯਃ — of sinners; ਸਰ੍ਵੇਭ੍ਯਃ — of all; ਪਾਪ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍-ਤਮਃ — the greatest sinner; ਸਰ੍ਵਮ੍ — all such sinful reactions; ਜ੍ਞਾਨ-ਪ੍ਲਵੇਨ — by the boat of transcendental knowledge; ਏਵ — certainly; ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਜਿਨਮ੍ — the ocean of miseries; ਸਂਤਰਿਸ਼੍ਯਸਿ — you will cross completely.
Translation
Even if you are considered to be the most sinful of all sinners, when you are situated in the boat of transcendental knowledge you will be able to cross over the ocean of miseries.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਯਥੈਧਾਂਸਿ ਸਮਿਦ੍ਧੋਗ੍ਨਇਰ੍ਭਸ੍ਮਸਾਤ੍ਕੁਰੁਤੇਰ੍ਜੁਨ ।
ਜ੍ਞਾਨਾਗ੍ਨਇਃ ਸਰ੍ਵਕਰ੍ਮਾਣਿ ਭਸ੍ਮਸਾਤ੍ਕੁਰੁਤੇ ਤਥਾ ॥ 37 ॥

ਯਥਾ — just as; ਏਧਾਂਸਿ — firewood; ਸਮਿਦ੍ਧਃ — blazing; ਅਗ੍ਨਿਃ — fire; ਭਸ੍ਮ-ਸਾਤ੍ — ashes; ਕੁਰੁਤੇ — turns; ਅਰ੍ਜੁਨ — O Arjuna; ਜ੍ਞਾਨ-ਅਗ੍ਨਿਃ — the fire of knowledge; ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਕਰ੍ਮਾਣਿ — all reactions to material activities; ਭਸ੍ਮ-ਸਾਤ੍ — to ashes; ਕੁਰੁਤੇ — it turns; ਤਥਾ — similarly.
Translation
As a blazing fire turns firewood to ashes, O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge burn to ashes all reactions to material activities.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨ ਹਿ ਜ੍ਞਾਨੇਨ ਸਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਮਿਹ ਵਿਦ੍ਯਤੇ ।
ਤਤ੍ਸ੍ਵਯਂ ਯੋਗਸਂਸਿਦ੍ਧਃ ਕਾਲੇਨਾਤ੍ਮਨਿ ਵਿਂਦਤਿ ॥ 38 ॥
Meaning
ਨ — nothing; ਹਿ — certainly; ਜ੍ਞਾਨੇਨ — with knowledge; ਸਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਮ੍ — in comparison; ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਮ੍ — sanctified; ਇਹ — in this world; ਵਿਦ੍ਯਤੇ — exists; ਤਤ੍ — that; ਸ੍ਵਯਮ੍ — himself; ਯੋਗ — in devotion; ਸਂਸਿਦ੍ਧਃ — he who is mature; ਕਾਲੇਨ — in course of time; ਆਤ੍ਮਨਿ — in himself; ਵਿਂਦਤਿ — enjoys.
Translation
In this world, there is nothing so sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has become accomplished in the practice of devotional service enjoys this knowledge within himself in due course of time.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਾਵਾఁਲ੍ਲਭਤੇ ਜ੍ਞਾਨਂ ਤਤ੍ਪਰਃ ਸਂਯਤੇਂਦ੍ਰਿਯਃ ।
ਜ੍ਞਾਨਂ ਲਬ੍ਧ੍ਵਾ ਪਰਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿਮਚਿਰੇਣਾਧਿਗਚ੍ਛਤਿ ॥ 39 ॥
Meaning
ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਾ-ਵਾਨ੍ — a faithful man; ਲਭਤੇ — achieves; ਜ੍ਞਾਨਮ੍ — knowledge; ਤਤ੍-ਪਰਃ — very much attached to it; ਸਂਯਤ — controlled; ਇਂਦ੍ਰਿਯਃ — senses; ਜ੍ਞਾਨਮ੍ — knowledge; ਲਬ੍ਧ੍ਵਾ — having achieved; ਪਰਾਮ੍ — transcendental; ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿਮ੍ — peace; ਅਚਿਰੇਣ — very soon; ਅਧਿਗਚ੍ਚਤਿ — attains.
Translation
A faithful man who is dedicated to transcendental knowledge and who subdues his senses is eligible to achieve such knowledge, and having achieved it he quickly attains the supreme spiritual peace.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਜ੍ਞਸ਼੍ਚਾਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਦਧਾਨਸ਼੍ਚ ਸਂਸ਼ਯਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਵਿਨਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ।
ਨਾਯਂ ਲੋਕੋਸ੍ਤਿ ਨ ਪਰੋ ਨ ਸੁਖਂ ਸਂਸ਼ਯਾਤ੍ਮਨਃ ॥ 40 ॥
Meaning
ਅਜ੍ਞਃ — a fool who has no knowledge in standard scriptures; ਚ — and; ਅਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਦਧਾਨਃ — without faith in revealed scriptures; ਚ — also; ਸਂਸ਼ਯ — of doubts; ਆਤ੍ਮਾ — a person; ਵਿਨਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ — falls back; ਨ — never; ਅਯਮ੍ — in this; ਲੋਕਃ — world; ਅਸ੍ਤਿ — there is; ਨ — nor; ਪਰਃ — in the next life; ਨ — not; ਸੁਖਮ੍ — happiness; ਸਂਸ਼ਯ — doubtful; ਆਤ੍ਮਨਃ — of the person.
Translation
But ignorant and faithless persons who doubt the revealed scriptures do not attain God consciousness; they fall down. For the doubting soul there is happiness neither in this world nor in the next.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਯੋਗਸਨ੍ਨ੍ਯਸ੍ਤਕਰ੍ਮਾਣਂ ਜ੍ਞਾਨਸਂਛਿਨ੍ਨਸਂਸ਼ਯਮ੍ ।
ਆਤ੍ਮਵਂਤਂ ਨ ਕਰ੍ਮਾਣਿ ਨਿਬਧ੍ਨਂਤਿ ਧਨਂਜਯ ॥ 41 ॥
Meaning
ਯੋਗ — by devotional service in karma-yoga; ਸਨ੍ਨ੍ਯਸ੍ਤ — one who has renounced; ਕਰ੍ਮਾਣਮ੍ — the fruits of actions; ਜ੍ਞਾਨ — by knowledge; ਸਂਚਿਨ੍ਨ — cut; ਸਂਸ਼ਯਮ੍ — doubts; ਆਤ੍ਮ-ਵਂਤਮ੍ — situated in the self; ਨ — never; ਕਰ੍ਮਾਣਿ — works; ਨਿਬਧ੍ਨਂਤਿ — do bind; ਧਨਮ੍-ਜਯ — O conqueror of riches.
Translation
One who acts in devotional service, renouncing the fruits of his actions, and whose doubts have been destroyed by transcendental knowledge, is situated factually in the self. Thus he is not bound by the reactions of work, O conqueror of riches.

ਤਸ੍ਮਾਦਜ੍ਞਾਨਸਂਭੂਤਂ ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸ੍ਥਂ ਜ੍ਞਾਨਾਸਿਨਾਤ੍ਮਨਃ ।
ਛਿਤ੍ਤ੍ਵੈਨਂ ਸਂਸ਼ਯਂ ਯੋਗਮਾਤਿਸ਼੍ਠੋਤ੍ਤਿਸ਼੍ਠ ਭਾਰਤ ॥ 42 ॥
Meaning
ਤਸ੍ਮਾਤ੍ — therefore; ਅਜ੍ਞਾਨ-ਸਂਭੂਤਮ੍ — born of ignorance; ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍-ਸ੍ਥਮ੍ — situated in the heart; ਜ੍ਞਾਨ — of knowledge; ਅਸਿਨਾ — by the weapon; ਆਤ੍ਮਨਃ — of the self; ਚਿਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਾ — cutting off; ਏਨਮ੍ — this; ਸਂਸ਼ਯਮ੍ — doubt; ਯੋਗਮ੍ — in yoga; ਆਤਿਸ਼੍ਠ — be situated; ਉਤ੍ਤਿਸ਼੍ਠ — stand up to fight; ਭਾਰਤ — O descendant of Bharata.
Translation
Therefore the doubts which have arisen in your heart out of ignorance should be slashed by the weapon of knowledge. Armed with yoga, O Bhārata, stand and fight.
