ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਰੁਚਿਰਕਂਪਿਤਕੁਂਡਲਮਂਡਲਃ ਸੁਚਿਰਮੀਸ਼ ਨਨਰ੍ਤਿਥ ਪਨ੍ਨਗੇ ।
ਅਮਰਤਾਡਿਤਦੁਂਦੁਭਿਸੁਂਦਰਂ ਵਿਯਤਿ ਗਾਯਤਿ ਦੈਵਤਯੌਵਤੇ ॥1॥

Meaning
ਰੁਚਿਰ-ਕਂਪਿਤ- - beautifully quivering; ਕੁਂਡਲ-ਮਂਡਲਃ - the ear ornaments; ਸੁਚਿਰਮ੍-ਈਸ਼ - for long O Lord!; ਨਨਰ੍ਤਿਥ ਪਨ੍ਨਗੇ - (Thou) danced on the serpent's (hoods); ਅਮਰ-ਤਾਡਿਤ- - the gods beat; ਦੁਂਦੁਭਿਃ-ਸੁਂਦਰਮ੍ - the drums sweetly; ਵਿਯਤਿ ਗਾਯਤਿ - in the skies sang; ਦੈਵਤ-ਯੌਵਤੇ - the celestial damsels;

Translation
O Lord! With Thy ear ornaments quivering rhythmically, Thou danced for long on the hoods of the serpent. As the gods in the sky beat the drums, the heavenly damsels sang in accompaniment.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨਮਤਿ ਯਦ੍ਯਦਮੁਸ਼੍ਯ ਸ਼ਿਰੋ ਹਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਿਹਾਯ ਤਦੁਨ੍ਨਤਮੁਨ੍ਨਤਮ੍ ।
ਪਰਿਮਥਨ੍ ਪਦਪਂਕਰੁਹਾ ਚਿਰਂ ਵ੍ਯਹਰਥਾਃ ਕਰਤਾਲਮਨੋਹਰਮ੍ ॥2॥

Meaning
ਨਮਤਿ ਯਤ੍-ਯਤ੍- - drops down that which; ਅਮੁਸ਼੍ਯ ਸ਼ਿਰਃ - his (Kaaliya's) head (hoods); ਹਰੇ - O Hari!; ਪਰਿਵਿਹਾਯ ਤਤ੍- - leaving that; ਉਨ੍ਨਤਮ੍-ਉਨ੍ਨਤਮ੍ - the raised raised one; ਪਰਿਮਥਨ੍ ਪਦ੍-ਪਂਕਰੁਹਾ - trampling by Thy feet lotus like; ਚਿਰਂ ਵ੍ਯਹਰਥਾਃ - for long (Thou) played around; ਕਰਤਾਲ-ਮਨੋਹਰਮ੍ - clapping beautifully;

Translation
O Hari! Thou played around for long, leaving the drooped down head and jumping on the raised ones. Thus Thou trampled hood after hood with Thy lotus feet. Thou danced around in this manner keeping time with the clapping of hands beautifully.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਤ੍ਵਦਵਭਗ੍ਨਵਿਭੁਗ੍ਨਫਣਾਗਣੇ ਗਲਿਤਸ਼ੋਣਿਤਸ਼ੋਣਿਤਪਾਥਸਿ ।
ਫਣਿਪਤਾਵਵਸੀਦਤਿ ਸਨ੍ਨਤਾਸ੍ਤਦਬਲਾਸ੍ਤਵ ਮਾਧਵ ਪਾਦਯੋਃ ॥3॥

Meaning
ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਅਵਭਗ੍ਨ- - (when) by Thee crushed; ਵਿਭੁਗ੍ਨ-ਫਣਾਗਣੇ - and so drooping were the many hoods; ਗਲਿਤ-ਸ਼ੋਣਿਤ- - (when) the flowing blood; ਸ਼ੋਣਿਤ-ਪਾਥਸਿ - made red the waters; ਫਣਿਪਤੌ-ਅਵਸੀਦਤਿ - the serpent king got exhausted,; ਸਨ੍ਨਤਾਃ-ਤਤ੍-ਅਬਲਾਃ- - prostrated his wives; ਤਵ ਮਾਧਵ ਪਾਦਯੋਃ - (at) Thy, O Maadhava, two feet;

Translation
The group of hoods were crushed by Thee and were drooping. The blood flowing from them rendered the waters of Yamunaa red. The serpent king was totally exhausted. Thereupon, O Maadhava! His wives prostrated at Thy two feet in all humility.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਯਿ ਪੁਰੈਵ ਚਿਰਾਯ ਪਰਿਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਤ੍ਵਦਨੁਭਾਵਵਿਲੀਨਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦੋ ਹਿ ਤਾਃ ।
ਮੁਨਿਭਿਰਪ੍ਯਨਵਾਪ੍ਯਪਥੈਃ ਸ੍ਤਵੈਰ੍ਨੁਨੁਵੁਰੀਸ਼ ਭਵਂਤਮਯਂਤ੍ਰਿਤਮ੍ ॥4॥

Meaning
ਅਯਿ ਪੁਰਾ-ਏਵ - O Lord! Even long ago; ਚਿਰਾਯ ਪਰਿਸ਼੍ਰੁਤ- - for a long time, having well heard of; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਅਨੁਭਾਵ- - Thy greatness; ਵਿਲੀਨ-ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦਃ ਹਿ - with their immersed hearts, indeed,; ਤਾਃ ਮੁਨਿਭਿਃ-ਅਪਿ- - they, by the sages even; ਅਨਵਾਪ੍ਯ-ਪਥੈਃ - unattained ways; ਸ੍ਤਵੈਃ-ਨੁਨੁਵੁਃ- - with (such) hymns praised; ਈਸ਼ - O Lord; ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਅਯਂਤ੍ਰਿਤਮ੍ - Thee, unrestricted;

Translation
O Lord! Long ago, and for a long time the serpent wives had well heard of Thy majestic greatness. And so their minds were absorbed in Thee. Without any restrain, they hailed Thee with hymns of praises of a kind which are beyond the powers of even great sages.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਫਣਿਵਧੂਗਣਭਕ੍ਤਿਵਿਲੋਕਨਪ੍ਰਵਿਕਸਤ੍ਕਰੁਣਾਕੁਲਚੇਤਸਾ ।
ਫਣਿਪਤਿਰ੍ਭਵਤਾ਽ਚ੍ਯੁਤ ਜੀਵਿਤਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਸਮਰ੍ਪਿਤਮੂਰ੍ਤਿਰਵਾਨਮਤ੍ ॥5॥

Meaning
ਫਣਿ-ਵਧੂ-ਗਣ- - the serpent wives'; ਭਕ੍ਤਿ-ਵਿਲੋਕਨ- - devotion seeing; ਪ੍ਰਵਿਕਸਤ੍-ਕਰੁਣਾ- - with overflowing compassion; ਆਕੁਲ-ਚੇਤਸਾ - filling Thy mind; ਫਣਿਪਤਿਃ-ਭਵਤਾ- - the serpent king by Thee; ਅਚ੍ਯੁਤ - O Achyuta!; ਜੀਵਿਤਃ-ਤ੍ਵਯਿ - let to live, unto Thee; ਸਮਰ੍ਪਿਤ-ਮੂਰ੍ਤਿਃ- - surrendering himself; ਅਵਾਨਮਤ੍ - prostrated;

Translation
O Achyuta! Thy heart was overflowing with compassion on seeing the devotion of the serpent wives. With Thy mind welled with such compassion Thou let the serpent king live, who then surrendering himself unto Thee, prostrated before Thee.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਰਮਣਕਂ ਵ੍ਰਜ ਵਾਰਿਧਿਮਧ੍ਯਗਂ ਫਣਿਰਿਪੁਰ੍ਨ ਕਰੋਤਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿਤਾਮ੍ ।
ਇਤਿ ਭਵਦ੍ਵਚਨਾਨ੍ਯਤਿਮਾਨਯਨ੍ ਫਣਿਪਤਿਰ੍ਨਿਰਗਾਦੁਰਗੈਃ ਸਮਮ੍ ॥6॥

Meaning
ਰਮਣਕਂ ਵ੍ਰਜ - to Ramanaka (island) go; ਵਾਰਿਧਿ-ਮਧ੍ਯਗਂ - (situated) in the ocean's centre; ਫਣਿ-ਰਿਪੁਃ-ਨ ਕਰੋਤਿ - the enemy of the snakes (Garuda) will not do; ਵਿਰੋਧਿਤਾਂ ਇਤਿ - enmity', thus; ਭਵਤ੍-ਵਚਨਾਨਿ- - Thy words; ਅਤਿਮਾਨਯਨ੍- - respectfully obeying; ਫਣਪਤਿਃ-ਨਿਰਗਾਤ੍- - the serpent king departed; ਉਰਗੈਃ ਸਮਮ੍ - the other serpents along with;

Translation
Thou then told him to go to the Ramanaka island situated in the centre of the ocean. There the enemy of the snakes, Garuda would not do him any harm. Respectfully obeying these words of Thine, the serpent king departed along with the other snakes.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਫਣਿਵਧੂਜਨਦਤ੍ਤਮਣਿਵ੍ਰਜਜ੍ਵਲਿਤਹਾਰਦੁਕੂਲਵਿਭੂਸ਼ਿਤਃ ।
ਤਟਗਤੈਃ ਪ੍ਰਮਦਾਸ਼੍ਰੁਵਿਮਿਸ਼੍ਰਿਤੈਃ ਸਮਗਥਾਃ ਸ੍ਵਜਨੈਰ੍ਦਿਵਸਾਵਧੌ ॥7॥

Meaning
ਫਣਿਵਧੂਜਨ- - the serpent wives; ਦਤ੍ਤ-ਮਣਿਵ੍ਰਜ- - gave (Thee) many gems; ਜ੍ਵਲਿਤ-ਹਾਰ- - making resplendent the necklaces; ਦੁਕੂਲ-ਵਿਭੂਸ਼ਿਤਃ - and by silk garments adorned; ਤਟ-ਗਤੈਃ - on the banks who were (waiting); ਪ੍ਰਮਦਾਸ਼੍ਰੁ-ਵਿਮਿਸ਼੍ਰਿਤੈਃ - with joyful tears mingling (sight); ਸਮਗਥਾਃ ਸ੍ਵਜਨੈਃ- - Thou went with Thy folk; ਦਿਵਸ-ਅਵਧੌ - at the day's end (evening);

Translation
The serpent wives gifted Thee many gems, resplendent necklaces and silk garments. Adorned with these, towards evening, Thou joined Thy folk, who were waiting for Thee on the banks with their sights mingled with joyful tears, and went with them.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨਿਸ਼ਿ ਪੁਨਸ੍ਤਮਸਾ ਵ੍ਰਜਮਂਦਿਰਂ ਵ੍ਰਜਿਤੁਮਕ੍ਸ਼ਮ ਏਵ ਜਨੋਤ੍ਕਰੇ ।
ਸ੍ਵਪਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਭਵਚ੍ਚਰਣਾਸ਼੍ਰਯੇ ਦਵਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਾਨੁਰਰੁਂਧ ਸਮਂਤਤਃ ॥8॥

Meaning
ਨਿਸ਼ਿ ਪੁਨਃ-ਤਮਸਾ - (when) in the night, again because of darkness; ਵ੍ਰਜ-ਮਂਦਿਰਂ - to the Vraja houses; ਵ੍ਰਜਿਤੁਮ੍-ਅਕ੍ਸ਼ਮ - to go were unable; ਏਵ ਜਨੋਤ੍ਕਰੇ - certainly, the group of people; ਸ੍ਵਪਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਰ - (they) were sleeping there; ਭਵਤ੍-ਚਰਣ-ਆਸ਼੍ਰਯੇ - in Thy feets' shelter; ਦਵਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਾਨੁਃ- - a forest fire; ਅਰੁਂਧ ਸਮਂਤਤਃ - surrounded all around;

Translation
In the darkness of the night the group of people were unable to go back to their houses in Vraja. So they were sleeping there on the banks in the shelter of Thy feet. Just then they were engulfed by a forest fire.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਪ੍ਰਬੁਧਿਤਾਨਥ ਪਾਲਯ ਪਾਲਯੇਤ੍ਯੁਦਯਦਾਰ੍ਤਰਵਾਨ੍ ਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਲਕਾਨ੍ ।
ਅਵਿਤੁਮਾਸ਼ੁ ਪਪਾਥ ਮਹਾਨਲਂ ਕਿਮਿਹ ਚਿਤ੍ਰਮਯਂ ਖਲੁ ਤੇ ਮੁਖਮ੍ ॥9॥

Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਬੁਧਿਤਾਨ੍-ਅਥ - who were awakened then; ਪਾਲਯ ਪਾਲਯ-ਇਤਿ- - save, save us thus; ਉਦਯਤ੍-ਆਰ੍ਤ-ਰਵਾਨ੍ - raising piteous tones; ਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਲਕਾਨ੍ - the cowherds; ਅਵਿਤੁਮ੍-ਆਸ਼ੁ - to protect, quickly; ਪਪਾਥ ਮਹਾਨਲਮ੍ - (Thou) drank the great fire; ਕਿਮ੍-ਇਹ ਚਿਤ੍ਰਮ੍- - what here is surprising; ਅਯਂ ਖਲੁ - this (fire) is indeed; ਤੇ ਮੁਖਮ੍ - Thy mouth;

Translation
The Gopas were awakened and raised piteous tones of 'save us, save us', in alarm. To quickly protect them, Thou drank in that great fire. What is so surprising in this? Thy mouth, indeed, is fire itself.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸ਼ਿਖਿਨਿ ਵਰ੍ਣਤ ਏਵ ਹਿ ਪੀਤਤਾ ਪਰਿਲਸਤ੍ਯਧੁਨਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਯਯਾ਽ਪ੍ਯਸੌ ।
ਇਤਿ ਨੁਤਃ ਪਸ਼ੁਪੈਰ੍ਮੁਦਿਤੈਰ੍ਵਿਭੋ ਹਰ ਹਰੇ ਦੁਰਿਤੈਃਸਹ ਮੇ ਗਦਾਨ੍ ॥10॥

Meaning
ਸ਼ਿਖਿਨਿ ਵਰ੍ਣਤਃ ਏਵ - in the fire by colour only; ਹਿ ਪੀਤਤਾ - indeed is yellowness (Peetataa); ਪਰਿਲਸਤਿ-ਅਧੁਨਾ - it exists now; ਕ੍ਰਿਯਯਾ-ਅਪਿ-ਅਸੌ - as an action (Peetataa) also in this (fire); ਇਤਿ ਨੁਤਃ - thus praised; ਪਸ਼ੁਪੈਃ-ਮੁਦਿਤੈਃ- - by the cowherds (who were) delighted; ਵਿਭੋ - O All pervading Lord!; ਹਰ ਹਰੇ - eradicate, O Hari!; ਦੁਰਿਤੈਃ ਸਹ - along with the sins; ਮੇ ਗਦਾਨ੍ - my ailments;

Translation
The yellowness 'Peetataa' was only an adjective of fire. By Thy having drunk it, it has also acquired the verb adjective of Peetataa, to be drunk. O All pervading Lord! The delighted cowherds thus praised Thee. O Hari! Deign to eradicate my ailments along with my sins.
