Meaning
ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਅਯਮ੍-ਉਦ੍ਵਹਨ੍ - Thee he carrying; ਯਦੁਕੁਲ-ਉਦ੍ਵਹਃ - this leader of the Yadu clan; ਨਿਸ੍ਸਰਨ੍ ਦਦਰ੍ਸ਼ - and setting out saw; ਗਗਨ-ਉਚ੍ਚਲਤ੍-ਜਲ-ਭਰਾਮ੍ - reaching to the skies the water overflowing; ਕਲਿਂਦ-ਆਤ੍ਮਜਾਮ੍ - Kalinda's daughter, Yamuna; ਅਹੋ ਸਲਿਲ-ਸਂਚਯਃ ਸਃ - Lo! water collection that; ਪੁਨਃ-ਐਂਦ੍ਰਜਾਲ-ਉਦਿਤਃ - as though caused by Indrajaala, magic; ਜਲੌਘਃ- ਇਵ - a flood like; ਤਤ੍-ਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਾਤ੍ - in that very moment; ਪ੍ਰਪਦ-ਮੇਯਤਾਮ੍-ਆਯਯੌ - to the ankles measuring became;
Translation
When the leader of the Yadu clan Vasudeva set out carrying Thee, he saw the waters of the Yamuna river flooded to the skies. Lo! As he crossed, the waters were reduced to the ankles of his feet as if the huge expanse of water was an illusory flood caused by magic.

ਪ੍ਰਸੁਪ੍ਤਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਲਿਕਾਂ ਨਿਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਮਾਰੁਦਦ੍ਬਾਲਿਕਾ-
ਮਪਾਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਕਵਾਟਿਕਾਂ ਪਸ਼ੁਪਵਾਟਿਕਾਮਾਵਿਸ਼ਨ੍ ।
ਭਵਂਤਮਯਮਰ੍ਪਯਨ੍ ਪ੍ਰਸਵਤਲ੍ਪਕੇ ਤਤ੍ਪਦਾ-
ਦ੍ਵਹਨ੍ ਕਪਟਕਨ੍ਯਕਾਂ ਸ੍ਵਪੁਰਮਾਗਤੋ ਵੇਗਤਃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਸੁਪ੍ਤ-ਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਲਿਕਾਂ - fast asleep, (in which) the cowherd women were; ਨਿਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਮ੍-ਆਰੁਦਦ੍-ਬਾਲਿਕਾਮ੍- - gently (where) was crying a girl child; ਅਪਾਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਕਵਾਟਿਕਾਮ੍ - open were whose doors; ਪਸ਼ੁਪ-ਵਾਟਿਕਾਮ੍-ਆਵਿਸ਼ਨ੍ - (that) cowherd's house entering; ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਅਯਮ੍-ਅਰ੍ਪਯਨ੍ - Thee, he (that Vasudeva) placing; ਪ੍ਰਸਵ-ਤਲ੍ਪਕੇ - on the labour cot; ਤਤ੍-ਪਦਾਤ੍-ਵਹਨ੍ - (and) from that place taking; ਕਪਟ-ਕਨ੍ਯਕਾਮ੍ - the seeming female infant; ਸ੍ਵਪੁਰਮ੍-ਆਗਤਃ ਵੇਗਤਃ - came back to his city quickly;
Translation
Vasudeva entered the cowherd chieftain's house, whose doors were open and the cowherd women were all fast asleep, and a baby girl was crying. He gently placed Thee on the labour cot and took the seeming female infant (Yoga Maayaa) in his hands and quickly proceeded to his house, in Mathura.

Meaning
ਤਤਃ-ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਅਨੁਜਾ-ਰਵ- - then by Thy younger sister's the sound (of crying); ਕ੍ਸ਼ਪਿਤ-ਨਿਦ੍ਰ-ਵੇਗ-ਦ੍ਰਵਤ੍- - awakened and running fast; ਭਟ-ਉਤ੍ਕਰ-ਨਿਵੇਦਿਤ- - the host of attendants informed; ਪ੍ਰਸਵ-ਵਾਰ੍ਤਯਾ- - (about) the delivery news; ਏਵ-ਆਰ੍ਤਿਮਾਨ੍ - (by which) only agitated; ਵਿਮੁਕ੍ਤ-ਚਿਕੁਰ-ਉਤ੍ਕਰਃ- - (and with) dishevelled locks of hair; ਤ੍ਵਰਿਤਮ੍-ਆਪਤਨ੍ - hastily reaching; ਭੋਜ-ਰਾਜ-ਅਤੁਸ਼੍ਟ - Bhojaraaja (Kansa) dissatisfied; ਇਵ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਵਾਨ੍ - as if saw; ਭਗਿਨਿਕਾ-ਕਰੇ ਕਨ੍ਯਕਾਮ੍ - in his sister's hands the baby girl;
Translation
Then awakened by the sound of crying of Thy younger sister, the host of attendants ran fast to inform Kansa of the child's birth. Stricken with fear, Kansa, with dishevelled hair, hastily reached the spot and was surprised and confused to see a baby girl in his sister's arms.

ਦ੍ਵਿਪੋ ਨਲਿਨਿਕਾਂਤਰਾਦਿਵ ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਣਾਲਿਕਾਮਾਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਪ-
ਨ੍ਨਯਂ ਤ੍ਵਦਨੁਜਾਮਜਾਮੁਪਲਪਟ੍ਟਕੇ ਪਿਸ਼੍ਟਵਾਨ੍ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਧ੍ਰੁਵਂ ਕਪਟਸ਼ਾਲਿਨਃ - certainly of the deceitful; ਮਧੁਹਰਸ੍ਯ ਮਾਯਾ ਭਵੇਤ੍- - Vishnu's trick this must be; ਅਸੌ-ਇਤਿ ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰਿਕਾਮ੍ - this (girl) thus (deciding), the girl; ਭਗਿਨਿਕਾ-ਕਰ-ਆਲਿਂਗਿਤਾਮ੍ - in his sister in her arms held close; ਦ੍ਵਿਪਃ ਨਲਿਨਿ-ਕਾਂਤਰਾਤ੍-ਇਵ - (like) an elephant from the lotus pond; ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਣਾਲਿਕਾਮ੍-ਆਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਪਨ੍- - a tender lotus stalk plucking out; ਅਯਂ ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਅਨੁਜਾਮ੍-ਅਜਾਮ੍- - this (Kansa), Thy younger sister , the birth less one; ਉਪਲ-ਪਟ੍ਟਕੇ ਪਿਸ਼੍ਟਵਾਨ੍ - on a block of stone dashed;
Translation
Kansa decided that certainly this was a trick of the deceitful Vishnu that this girl was born. He pulled the infant away from his sister who had held her close in her arms, just as an elephant would pluck out a tender lotus stalk from a pond of lotus, and dashed her, Thy younger sister, the birth less one, on a block of stone.

ਅਧਸ੍ਤਲਮਜਗ੍ਮੁਸ਼ੀ ਵਿਕਸਦਸ਼੍ਟਬਾਹੁਸ੍ਫੁਰ-
ਨ੍ਮਹਾਯੁਧਮਹੋ ਗਤਾ ਕਿਲ ਵਿਹਾਯਸਾ ਦਿਦ੍ਯੁਤੇ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਤਤਃ ਭਵਤ੍-ਉਪਾਸਕਃ - then (as) Thy devotee; ਝਟਿਤਿ ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਯੁਪਾਸ਼ਾਤ੍-ਇਵ - quickly from the clutches of death, like that; ਪ੍ਰਮੁਚ੍ਯ ਤਰਸਾ-ਏਵ - slipping out (of Kansa's clutches) immediately; ਸਾ ਸਮਧਿਰੂਢ-ਰੂਪਾਂਤਰਾ - she (Yoga Maayaa) assumed another form; ਅਧਃ-ਤਲਮ੍-ਅਜਗ੍ਮੁਸ਼ੀ - below the earth not going (rising above the earth); ਵਿਕਸਤ੍-ਅਸ਼੍ਟ-ਬਾਹੁਃ- - (the form in which) she developed eight arms; ਸ੍ਫੁਰਨ੍-ਮਹਾ-ਆਯੁਧਮ੍- - shining with divine weapons; ਅਹੋ ਗਤਾ ਕਿਲ - what a wonder went away indeed; ਵਿਹਾਯਸਾ ਦਿਦ੍ਯੁਤੇ - in the sky shining;
Translation
Then, just as Thy devotee would quickly free himself from the clutches of death, she, Yoga Maayaa freed herself from the clutches of Kamsa immediately. Not hitting the earth, she rose above the earth in the sky and assumed another form with eight arms shining with divine weapons.

ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਂਸਤਰ ਕਂਸ ਤੇ ਕਿਮੁ ਮਯਾ ਵਿਨਿਸ਼੍ਪਿਸ਼੍ਟਯਾ
ਬਭੂਵ ਭਵਦਂਤਕਃ ਕ੍ਵਚਨ ਚਿਂਤ੍ਯਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਹਿਤਮ੍ ।
ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਦਨੁਜਾ ਵਿਭੋ ਖਲਮੁਦੀਰ੍ਯ ਤਂ ਜਗ੍ਮੁਸ਼ੀ
ਮਰੁਦ੍ਗਣਪਣਾਯਿਤਾ ਭੁਵਿ ਚ ਮਂਦਿਰਾਣ੍ਯੇਯੁਸ਼ੀ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਂਸਤਰ ਕਂਸ - O cruel Kansa!; ਤੇ ਕਿਮੁ - what is your (gain); ਮਯਾ ਵਿਨਿਸ਼੍ਪਿਸ਼੍ਟਯਾ - by my killing; ਬਭੂਵ ਭਵਤ੍-ਅਂਤਕਃ - has been (born) your destroyer; ਕ੍ਵਚਨ - elsewhere; ਚਿਂਤ੍ਯਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਹਿਤਮ੍ - think of your welfare; ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਅਨੁਜਾ - thus Thy sister; ਵਿਭੋ ਖਲਮ੍-ਉਦੀਰ੍ਯ ਤਂ - O Lord! to the wicked one saying; ਜਗ੍ਮੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਰੁਦ੍ਗਣ-ਪਣਾਯਿਤਾ - went away (disappeared), being praised by the Devas; ਭੁਵਿ ਚ ਮਂਦਿਰਾਣਿ-ਏਯੁਸ਼ੀ - and on the earth, in the temples, entered;
Translation
"O cruel most Kansa! What is your gain by smashing me? Your destroyer has been born elsewhere. Think of your welfare." Thus saying to the wicked one, Thy sister disappeared. The Devas praised her also as she entered the temples on the earth and was worshipped.

ਕੁਮਾਰਕਵਿਮਾਰਕਾਃ ਕਿਮਿਵ ਦੁਸ਼੍ਕਰਂ ਨਿਸ਼੍ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪੈਃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਗੇ ਪੁਨਃ- - the next morning, again; ਅਗਾਤ੍ਮਜਾ- - by the daughter of the mountain (Paarvati-Yoga Maayaa); ਵਚਨਮ੍-ਈਰਿਤਾ - the words spoken (which were); ਭੂਭੁਜਾ - by the king (being told to); ਪ੍ਰਲਂਬ-ਬਕ-ਪੂਤਨਾ- - Pralamba, Baka, Pootanaa,; ਪ੍ਰਮੁਖ-ਦਾਨਵਾਃ - the main demons; ਮਾਨਿਨਃ - haughty; ਭਵਤ੍-ਨਿਧਨ-ਕਾਮ੍ਯਯਾ - with the desire to kill Thee; ਜਗਤਿ ਬਭ੍ਰਮੁਃ-ਨਿਰ੍ਭਯਾਃ - all over the land, roamed about fearlessly; ਕੁਮਾਰਕ-ਵਿਮਾਰਕਾਃ - killing children; ਕਿਮਿਵ ਦੁਸ਼੍ਕਰਂ ਨਿਸ਼੍ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪੈਃ - what is not possible by the merciless people;
Translation
Thereafter, the next morning, the king told the main haughty demons, Pralamba, Baka and Pootana, what the daughter of the mountain, Paarvati-Yoga Maayaa had said. They then roamed all over the land fearlessly killing the children. Merciless people are capable of doing merciless deeds.

Meaning
ਤਤਃ ਪਸ਼ੁਪ-ਮਂਦਿਰੇ - then in the cowherd's (Nanda's) house; ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਮੁਕੁਂਦ - (when) Thou were O Lord! (Bestower of Liberation); ਨਂਦ ਪ੍ਰਿਯਾ-ਪ੍ਰਸੂਤਿ-ਸ਼ਯਨੇ- - on wife of Nanda (Yashoda's) labour-bed; ਸ਼ਯੇ ਰੁਦਤਿ - lying and crying; ਕਿਂਚਿਤ੍-ਅਂਚਤ੍-ਪਦੇ - and slightly kicking the legs; ਵਿਬੁਧ੍ਯ ਵਨਿਤਾ-ਜਨੈਃ- - waking up, by the women folk; ਤਨਯ-ਸਂਭਵੇ ਘੋਸ਼ਿਤੇ - the birth of a boy was announced; ਮੁਦਾ ਕਿਮੁ ਵਦਾਮਿ-ਅਹੋ - overjoyed, O What can I say; ਸਕਲਮ੍-ਆਕੁਲਂ ਗੋਕੁਲਂ - all brimming (with joy), Gokula was;
Translation
Then, Bestower of Liberation! O Lord! Lying on the labour bed of Yashoda, the cowherd chieftain's wife, Thou raised infant cries as Thou slightly kicked Thy legs. All the women folk were aroused from sleep, and they announced the birth of a boy. O! How can I describe the joy with which the whole of Gokula was brimming.

ਮਨੋਹਰਤਨੁਸ੍ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਾ ਜਗਤਿ ਪੁਣ੍ਯਵਂਤੋ ਜਿਤਾਃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਅਹੋ ਖਲੁ ਯਸ਼ੋਦਯਾ - what a wonder indeed, by Yashoda; ਨਵ-ਕਲਾਯ-ਚੇਤੋਹਰਂ - like a fresh Kalaya flower enchanting the mind; ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਅਲਮ੍-ਅਂਤਿਕੇ - Thee, very near to herself; ਪ੍ਰਥਮਮ੍-ਆਪਿਬਂਤ੍ਯਾ - at first drinking thoroughly; ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਾ ਪੁਨਃ - with the eyes, then; ਸ੍ਤਨਭਰਂ ਨਿਜਂ ਸਪਦਿ - her own breasts immediately; ਪਾਯਯਂਤ੍ਯਾ ਮੁਦਾ - feeding joyfully; ਮਨੋਹਰ-ਤਨੁ-ਸ੍ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਾ - (Thy) charming body caressing; ਜਗਤਿ ਪੁਣ੍ਯਵਂਤਃ - in the world, the most meritorious ones; ਜਿਤਾਃ - were surpassed;
Translation
What a wonder indeed that the most meritorious and holy persons were surpassed by Yashoda by her good fortune as she imbibed with her eyes Thy beautiful form fresh as a Kalaya flower lying by her side. Then she joyfully applied Thee to her breasts feeding Thee, as she also caressed Thy charming body again and again.

ਜਗਤ੍ਤ੍ਰਿਤਯਮਂਗਲ ਤ੍ਵਮਿਹ ਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮਾਮਯਾਤ੍ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਭਵਤ੍-ਕੁਸ਼ਲ-ਕਾਮ੍ਯਯਾ - Thy wellbeing desiring; ਸ ਖਲੁ ਨਂਦਗੋਪਃ-ਤਦਾ - that, Nanadagopa indeed, then; ਪ੍ਰਮੋਦ-ਭਰ-ਸਂਕੁਲਃ - with extreme joy overwhelmed; ਦ੍ਵਿਜ-ਕੁਲਾਯ - to the Braahmin clan (holy men); ਕਿਮ੍-ਨ-ਅਦਦਾਤ੍ - what did not give; ਤਥਾ-ਏਵ ਪਸ਼ੁ-ਪਾਲਕਾਃ - in the same way the cowherds; ਕਿਮੁ ਨ ਮਂਗਲਂ ਤੇਨਿਰੇ - what auspicious act did not perform; ਜਗਤ੍-ਤ੍ਰਿਤਯ-ਮਂਗਲ ਤ੍ਵਮ੍- - O Lord! The beneficiary of the world! Thou; ਇਹ ਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍-ਆਮਯਾਤ੍ - here save me from ailments;
Translation
Nandagopa, overwhelmed with joy,and out of the desire for Thy wellbeing gave away limitless gifts to holy men of the Braahmin clan. In the same manner innumerable auspicious rites and observances were performed by the gopas for Thy sake. Thou the harbinger of auspiciousness of the three worlds, deign to save me from my ailments.
