ਸਤੇਮਨੈਰ੍ਨਿਰਗਮਦੀਸ਼ ਜੇਮਨੈਃ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਕਦਾਚਨ - once; ਵ੍ਰਜਸ਼ਿਸ਼ੁਭਿਃ ਸਮਂ - along with the children of Gokul; ਭਵਾਨ੍ ਵਨ-ਅਸ਼ਨੇ - Thou, eating in the woods (picnic); ਵਿਹਿਤ-ਮਤਿਃ - making up the mind; ਪ੍ਰਗੇਤਰਾਂ ਸਮਾਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਃ - early in the morning surrounded by; ਬਹੁਤਰ-ਵਤ੍ਸ-ਮਂਡਲੈਃ - many herds of calves; ਸਤੇਮਨੈਃ-ਨਿਰਗਮਤ੍- - with eatables set out; ਈਸ਼ ਜੇਮਨੈਃ - O Lord! (also taking along) cooked rice;
Translation
Once Thou decided to have a picnic in the woods. Along with the children of Gokul and surrounded by a large herd of calves, Thou set out early in the morning. O Lord Thou also took along eatables, cooked rice and other delicacies.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵਿਨਿਰ੍ਯਤਸ੍ਤਵ ਚਰਣਾਂਬੁਜਦ੍ਵਯਾ-
ਦੁਦਂਚਿਤਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਭੁਵਨਪਾਵਨਂ ਰਜਃ ।
ਮਹਰ੍ਸ਼ਯਃ ਪੁਲਕਧਰੈਃ ਕਲੇਬਰੈ-
ਰੁਦੂਹਿਰੇ ਧ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਭਵਦੀਕ੍ਸ਼ਣੋਤ੍ਸਵਾਃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਵਿਨਿਰ੍ਯਤਃ ਤਵ - Thy having set out; ਚਰਣ-ਅਂਬੁਜ-ਦ੍ਵਯਾਤ੍- - from Thy two lotus like feet; ਉਦਂਚਿਤਂ - risen up; ਤ੍ਰਿਭੁਵਨ-ਪਾਵਨਂ ਰਜਃ - (that which) sanctifies the three worlds, dust; ਮਹਰ੍ਸ਼ਯਃ ਪੁਲਕਧਰੈਃ - the great sages with horripilation; ਕਲੇਬਰੈਃ-ਉਦੂਹਿਰੇ - on their bodies received; ਧ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਭਵਤ੍-ਈਕ੍ਸ਼ਣ- - holding Thy sight; ਉਤ੍ਸਵਾਃ - as celebration;
Translation
When Thou set out for the woods, from Thy lotus like two feet the dust arose which sanctifies the three worlds. The great sages received that dust on their bodies with great joy and horripilation as they feasted their eyes on Thy sight.

ਅਘਾਸੁਰੋ ਨ੍ਯਰੁਣਦਘਾਯ ਵਰ੍ਤਨੀ
ਭਯਾਨਕਃ ਸਪਦਿ ਸ਼ਯਾਨਕਾਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਃ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਯਤਿ- - grazing; ਅਵਿਰਲ-ਸ਼ਾਦ੍ਵਲੇ ਤਲੇ - on the thick grass land; ਪਸ਼ੂਨ੍ ਵਿਭੋ - the cattle, O Lord!; ਭਵਤਿ ਸਮਂ ਕੁਮਾਰਕੈਃ - Thee with the lads; ਅਘਾਸੁਰਃ ਨ੍ਯਰੁਣਤ੍- - Aghaasura blocked; ਅਘਾਯ ਵਰ੍ਤਨੀ - for an evil deed the path; ਭਯਾਨਕਃ ਸਪਦਿ - most terrifying, suddenly; ਸ਼ਯਾਨਕ-ਆਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਃ - in a python form;
Translation
Thou and the lads were grazing the cattle on the thick grass lands. Suddenly the most terrifying demon Aghaasura, in the form of a formidable python, with an evil intention blocked the way.

ਮਹਾਚਲਪ੍ਰਤਿਮਤਨੋਰ੍ਗੁਹਾਨਿਭ-
ਪ੍ਰਸਾਰਿਤਪ੍ਰਥਿਤਮੁਖਸ੍ਯ ਕਾਨਨੇ ।
ਮੁਖੋਦਰਂ ਵਿਹਰਣਕੌਤੁਕਾਦ੍ਗਤਾਃ
ਕੁਮਾਰਕਾਃ ਕਿਮਪਿ ਵਿਦੂਰਗੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਮਹਾਚਲ-ਪ੍ਰਤਿਮ-ਤਨੋਃ- - with a mountain like body; ਗੁਹਾ-ਨਿਭ-ਪ੍ਰਸਾਰਿਤ- - cave like spread out; ਪ੍ਰਥਿਤ-ਮੁਖਸ੍ਯ - extended mouth; ਕਾਨਨੇ - in the forest; ਮੁਖ-ਉਦਰਂ - in the mouth cavity; ਵਿਹਰਣ-ਕੌਤੁਕਾਤ੍- - to explore in eagerness; ਗਤਾਃ ਕੁਮਾਰਕਾਃ - entered the lads; ਕਿਮ੍-ਅਪਿ - (when) somewhat; ਵਿਦੂਰਗੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ - ahead had gone, Thee;
Translation
Thou had gone a little ahead. The lads mistook the huge body of the Asura for a mountain and its large spread out mouth for a cave. In their eagerness to explore the woods, they entered the python's open mouth.

ਪ੍ਰਮਾਦਤਃ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਸ਼ਤਿ ਪਨ੍ਨਗੋਦਰਂ
ਕ੍ਵਥਤ੍ਤਨੌ ਪਸ਼ੁਪਕੁਲੇ ਸਵਾਤ੍ਸਕੇ ।
ਵਿਦਨ੍ਨਿਦਂ ਤ੍ਵਮਪਿ ਵਿਵੇਸ਼ਿਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੋ

Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਮਾਦਤਃ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਸ਼ਤਿ - by mistake, had entered; ਪਨ੍ਨਗ-ਉਦਰਂ - the snake's belly; ਕ੍ਵਥਤ੍-ਤਨੌ - (they) felt heat on their bodies; ਪਸ਼ੁਪਕੁਲੇ ਸਵਾਤ੍ਸਕੇ - the Gopa boys along with the calves; ਵਿਦਨ੍-ਇਦਂ ਤ੍ਵਮ੍-ਅਪਿ - knowing this, Thou also; ਵਿਵੇਸ਼ਿਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੋ - entered O Lord!; ਸੁਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍-ਜਨਂ - the friend folk; ਵਿਸ਼ਰਣਮ੍- - who were helpless; ਆਸ਼ੁ ਰਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤੁਮ੍ - immediately to save;
Translation
The Gopa boys along with the calves had entered the belly of the snake by mistake and started to feel the heat therein. O Lord! Apprehending the situation, Thou also entered immediately to save the helpless friends.

ਗਲੋਦਰੇ ਵਿਪੁਲਿਤਵਰ੍ਸ਼੍ਮਣਾ ਤ੍ਵਯਾ
ਮਹੋਰਗੇ ਲੁਠਤਿ ਨਿਰੁਦ੍ਧਮਾਰੁਤੇ ।
ਦ੍ਰੁਤਂ ਭਵਾਨ੍ ਵਿਦਲਿਤਕਂਠਮਂਡਲੋ
ਵਿਮੋਚਯਨ੍ ਪਸ਼ੁਪਪਸ਼ੂਨ੍ ਵਿਨਿਰ੍ਯਯੌ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਗਲ-ਉਦਰੇ - in the throat's cavity; ਵਿਪੁਲਿਤ-ਵਰ੍ਸ਼੍ਮਣਾ - with (Thy) increased body; ਤ੍ਵਯਾ - by Thee; ਮਹੋਰਗੇ ਲੁਠਤਿ - (when) the python was wreathing; ਨਿਰੁਦ੍ਧ-ਮਾਰੁਤੇ - because of the obstruction of the breath; ਦ੍ਰੁਤਂ ਭਵਾਨ੍ - quickly Thou; ਵਿਦਲਿਤ-ਕਂਠ-ਮਂਡਲਃ - tearing asunder the neck portion; ਵਿਮੋਚਯਨ੍ ਪਸ਼ੁਪ-ਪਸ਼ੂਨ੍ - released the Gopa boys and the calves; ਵਿਨਿਰ੍ਯਯੌ - and came out;
Translation
In the cavity of the throat of the python, Thou increased Thy size of Thy body, thus obstructing its breath. It began to wreath in agony, then Thou tore open its neck portion and releasing the Gopa boys and the calves, Thou also came out.

Meaning
ਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਂ ਦਿਵਿ - for an instant, in the sky; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਉਪਗਮ-ਅਰ੍ਥਮ੍-ਆਸ੍ਥਿਤਂ - Thy emergence awaiting; ਮਹਾ-ਅਸੁਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭਵਮ੍- - from the great Asura emerging; ਅਹੋ ਮਹਃ ਮਹਤ੍ - Oh! A brilliance great; ਵਿਨਿਰ੍ਗਤੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਤੁ - came out as Thou; ਨਿਲੀਨਮ੍-ਅਂਜਸਾ - merged immediately (into Thee only); ਨਭਃ-ਸ੍ਥਲੇ - in the skies; ਨਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੁਃ-ਅਥਃ - danced and then; ਜਗੁਃ ਸੁਰਾਃ - sang the gods;
Translation
A great brilliance emerged from the Asura and rose, in the sky and awaited Thy emerging from the body of the python. Oh! What a wonder, as soon as Thou came out the brilliance merged into Thee, while the gods danced and sang.

ਸਵਿਸ੍ਮਯੈਃ ਕਮਲਭਵਾਦਿਭਿਃ ਸੁਰੈ-
ਰਨੁਦ੍ਰੁਤਸ੍ਤਦਨੁ ਗਤਃ ਕੁਮਾਰਕੈਃ ।
ਦਿਨੇ ਪੁਨਸ੍ਤਰੁਣਦਸ਼ਾਮੁਪੇਯੁਸ਼ਿ
ਸ੍ਵਕੈਰ੍ਭਵਾਨਤਨੁਤ ਭੋਜਨੋਤ੍ਸਵਮ੍ ॥8॥
Meaning
ਸਵਿਸ੍ਮਯੈਃ - wonderstruck; ਕਮਲਭਵ-ਆਦਿਭਿਃ - Brahamaa and other; ਸੁਰੈਃ-ਅਨੁਦ੍ਰੁਤਃ - gods (watching and) following (Thee); ਤਦਨੁ ਗਤਃ - after that (Thou) went; ਕੁਮਾਰਕੈਃ ਦਿਨੇ ਪੁਨਃ- - with the Gopa boys (when) the day again; ਤਰੁਣ-ਦਸ਼ਾਮ੍-ਉਪੇਯੁਸ਼ਿ - youthful state attained (it became noon); ਸ੍ਵਕੈਃ ਭਵਾਨ੍- - with (Thy) own people Thou; ਅਤਨੁਤ ਭੋਜਨ-ਉਤ੍ਸਵਮ੍ - carried out the food celebration (picnic lunch);
Translation
Brahmaa and other gods were wonderstruck and watched Thee and followed Thee in the skies. After that Thou went with the Gopa boys when the day had reached noontime and with Thy own people Thou celebrated the food festival, the picnic lunch.

ਵਿਸ਼ਾਣਿਕਾਮਪਿ ਮੁਰਲੀਂ ਨਿਤਂਬਕੇ
ਨਿਵੇਸ਼ਯਨ੍ ਕਬਲਧਰਃ ਕਰਾਂਬੁਜੇ ।
ਪ੍ਰਹਾਸਯਨ੍ ਕਲਵਚਨੈਃ ਕੁਮਾਰਕਾਨ੍
ਬੁਭੋਜਿਥ ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ਼ਗਣੈਰ੍ਮੁਦਾ ਨੁਤਃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਵਿਸ਼ਾਣਿਕਾਮ੍-ਅਪਿ - the horn and also; ਮੁਰਲੀਂ ਨਿਤਂਬਕੇ - the flute, in the waist band; ਨਿਵੇਸ਼ਯਨ੍ - tucking; ਕਬਲਧਰਃ ਕਰਾਂਬੁਜੇ - a ball of rice holding in the lotus like hand; ਪ੍ਰਹਾਸਯਨ੍ - making (them) laugh; ਕਲਵਚਨੈਃ - by humorous talks; ਕੁਮਾਰਕਾਨ੍ ਬੁਭੋਜਿਥ - the boys, (Thou) ate; ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ਼ਗਣੈਃ - by the gods; ਮੁਦਾ ਨੁਤਃ - joyfully praised;
Translation
The horn and the flute were tucked in Thy waist band. Thou were holding a ball of rice in Thy lotus like hand and provoked peals of laughter among the boys by Thy humorous talks. As Thou took Thy meal the gods joyfully sang Thy praises.

ਸੁਖਾਸ਼ਨਂ ਤ੍ਵਿਹ ਤਵ ਗੋਪਮਂਡਲੇ

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਤੁਤਸ੍ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ਼ਵਰੈਰ੍ਜਗਤ੍ਪਤੇ
ਮਰੁਤ੍ਪੁਰੀਨਿਲਯ ਗਦਾਤ੍ ਪ੍ਰਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਸੁਖ-ਅਸ਼ਨਂ ਤੁ -ਇਹ - the happy meal indeed here; ਤਵ ਗੋਪ-ਮਂਡਲੇ - to Thee amidst the Gopas; ਮਖ-ਅਸ਼ਨਾਤ੍ - than the offerings of the sacrifices; ਪ੍ਰਿਯਮ੍-ਇਵ - is more pleasing; ਦੇਵ-ਮਂਡਲੇ - amidst the gods; ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਤੁਤਃ-ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ਼ਵਰੈਃ- - thus praised by the great gods; ਜਗਤ੍ਪਤੇ - O Lord of the universe!; ਮਰੁਤ੍ਪੁਰੀਨਿਲਯ - residing in Guruvaayur; ਗਦਾਤ੍ ਪ੍ਰਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍ - from ailments save me;
Translation
O Lord of the Universe! The great gods praised Thee saying that the meal taken happily with the Gopa boys gave Thee more pleasure than the sacrificial offerings which Thou had received with the gods. O Thou Residing in Guruvaayur! Save me from my ailments.
