ਅਯਿ ਦੇਵ ਪੁਰਾ ਕਿਲ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਸ੍ਵਯਮੁਤ੍ਤਾਨਸ਼ਯੇ ਸ੍ਤਨਂਧਯੇ ।
ਪਰਿਜ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਭਣਤੋ ਵ੍ਯਪਾਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇ ਵਦਨੇ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਮਚਸ਼੍ਟ ਵਲ੍ਲਵੀ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਅਯਿ ਦੇਵ - O Lord!; ਪੁਰਾ ਕਿਲ - long ago indeed; ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਸ੍ਵਯਮ੍- - (when) Thou by Thyself; ਉਤ੍ਤਾਨਸ਼ਯੇ - while lying on the back; ਸ੍ਤਨਂਧਯੇ - and sucking at the breast (of Yashodaa); ਪਰਿਜ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਭਣਤਃ - by yawning; ਵ੍ਯਪਾਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇ ਵਦਨੇ - in Thy open mouth; ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਮ੍-ਅਚਸ਼੍ਟ - the universe, was seen; ਵਲ੍ਲਵੀ - by the cowherdess (Yashodaa);
Translation
O Lord! Once long ago, as Thou were lying flat on the back, in the lap of Yashodaa and sucking at her breast, Thou yawned. As Thou did so, in Thy open mouth, Thou revealed to her the whole universe.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਪੁਨਰਪ੍ਯਥ ਬਾਲਕੈਃ ਸਮਂ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਲੀਲਾਨਿਰਤੇ ਜਗਤ੍ਪਤੇ ।
ਫਲਸਂਚਯਵਂਚਨਕ੍ਰੁਧਾ ਤਵ ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍ਭੋਜਨਮੂਚੁਰਰ੍ਭਕਾਃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਪੁਨਃ-ਅਪਿ-ਅਥ - again also; ਬਾਲਕੈਃ ਸਮਂ - with the children; ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਲੀਲਾ-ਨਿਰਤੇ - (when) Thou were engrossed in play; ਜਗਤ੍ਪਤੇ - O Lord of the Universe!; ਫਲ-ਸਂਚਯ- - in collecting the fruits; ਵਂਚਨ-ਕ੍ਰੁਧਾ - being cheated and angered (the children); ਤਵ ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍-ਭੋਜਨਮ੍- - Thy eating of sand; ਊਚੁਃ-ਅਰ੍ਭਕਾਃ - reported the children;
Translation
O Lord of the Universe! Again once, as Thou were playing with other children, Thou cheated them in collecting fruits. Angered at this, they reported to Thy mother that Thou had eaten mud.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਯਿ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਲਯਾਵਧੌ ਵਿਭੋ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਿਤੋਯਾਦਿਸਮਸ੍ਤਭਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਣਃ ।
ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦੁਪਾਸ਼ਨਤੋ ਰੁਜਾ ਭਵੇਦਿਤਿ ਭੀਤਾ ਜਨਨੀ ਚੁਕੋਪ ਸਾ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਅਯਿ - O (Thou); ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਲਯ-ਅਵਧੌ - Thee at the time of deluge; ਵਿਭੋ - O Lord!; ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਿ-ਤੋਯ-ਆਦਿ- - earth water etc; ਸਮਸ੍ਤ-ਭਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਣਃ - everything consuming; ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍-ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਤਃ - by eating mud,; ਰੁਜਾ ਭਵੇਤ੍-ਇਤਿ - sickness may be, thus; ਭੀਤਾ ਜਨਨੀ - (Thy) frightened mother; ਚੁਕੋਪ ਸਾ - she became angry;
Translation
O Lord! At the time of the deluge Thou do consume everything earth water etc. Yet Thy mother was frightened that Thou may fall sick by eating mud and so she became angry.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਯਿ ਦੁਰ੍ਵਿਨਯਾਤ੍ਮਕ ਤ੍ਵਯਾ ਕਿਮੁ ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸਾ ਬਤ ਵਤ੍ਸ ਭਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਾ ।
ਇਤਿ ਮਾਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਗਿਰਂ ਚਿਰਂ ਵਿਭੋ ਵਿਤਥਾਂ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਜਜ੍ਞਿਸ਼ੇ ਹਸਨ੍ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਅਯਿ ਦੁਰ੍ਵਿਨਯਾਤ੍ਮਕ - O naughty (one); ਤ੍ਵਯਾ ਕਿਮੁ - by you was it; ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸਾ ਬਤ - that mud indeed; ਵਤ੍ਸ ਭਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਾ - O son, was eaten; ਇਤਿ ਮਾਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਗਿਰਂ - such the words of Thy mother; ਚਿਰਂ ਵਿਭੋ - for a long time O Lord; ਵਿਤਥਾਂ ਤ੍ਵਂ - as false, Thee; ਪ੍ਰਤਿਜਜ੍ਞਿਸ਼ੇ ਹਸਨ੍ - asserted laughingly;
Translation
O you naughty one! Is it that you have eaten mud O son!' O Lord! These words of Thy mother, for a long time, Thou kept on denying and laughingly asserted that Thou had not done so.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਯਿ ਤੇ ਸਕਲੈਰ੍ਵਿਨਿਸ਼੍ਚਿਤੇ ਵਿਮਤਿਸ਼੍ਚੇਦ੍ਵਦਨਂ ਵਿਦਾਰ੍ਯਤਾਮ੍ ।
ਇਤਿ ਮਾਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਵਿਭਰ੍ਤ੍ਸਿਤੋ ਮੁਖਂ ਵਿਕਸਤ੍ਪਦ੍ਮਨਿਭਂ ਵ੍ਯਦਾਰਯਃ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਅਯਿ ਤੇ - O Boy! Of you; ਸਕਲੈਃ-ਵਿਨਿਸ਼੍ਚਿਤੇ - by every one asserted; ਵਿਮਤਿਃ-ਚੇਤ੍- - is, if disagreed; ਵਦਨਂ ਵਿਦਾਰ੍ਯਤਾਮ੍ - mouth (please) open; ਇਤਿ ਮਾਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇ-ਵਿਭਰ੍ਤ੍ਸਿਤਃ - thus by mother reprimanded; ਮੁਖਂ ਵਿਕਸਤ੍-ਪਦ੍ਮ-ਨਿਭਮ੍ - the mouth opening, lotus like; ਵ੍ਯਦਾਰਯਃ - (Thou) opened;
Translation
O Boy! If you deny what all the others are saying, please open your mouth.' Thus reprimanded by Thy mother, Thou opened Thy mouth as a lotus in full bloom.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਪਿ ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਲ੍ਲਵਦਰ੍ਸ਼ਨੋਤ੍ਸੁਕਾਂ ਜਨਨੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁ ਤਰ੍ਪਯਨ੍ਨਿਵ ।
ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਥਿਵੀਂ ਨਿਖਿਲਾਂ ਨ ਕੇਵਲਂ ਭੁਵਨਾਨ੍ਯਪ੍ਯਖਿਲਾਨ੍ਯਦੀਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਅਪਿ ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਲ੍-ਲਵ - even a mud trace; ਦਰ੍ਸ਼ਨ-ਉਤ੍ਸੁਕਾਂ - eager to see; ਜਨਨੀਂ ਤਾਂ - to mother that; ਬਹੁ ਤਰ੍ਪਯਨ੍-ਇਵ - very much trying to please as though,; ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਥਿਵੀਂ ਨਿਖਿਲਾਂ - the earth whole; ਨ ਕੇਵਲਂ - not only; ਭੁਵਨਾਨ੍-ਅਪਿ- - the other worlds also; ਅਖਿਲਾਨ੍-ਅਦੀਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਃ - entirely showed;
Translation
Thy mother was eager to see just a trace of mud in Thy mouth. As though to please her, and to give her abundant satisfaction Thou showed her in Thy mouth not only this whole earth but the entire universe.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਕੁਹਚਿਦ੍ਵਨਮਂਬੁਧਿਃ ਕ੍ਵਚਿਤ੍ ਕ੍ਵਚਿਦਭ੍ਰਂ ਕੁਹਚਿਦ੍ਰਸਾਤਲਮ੍ ।
ਮਨੁਜਾ ਦਨੁਜਾਃ ਕ੍ਵਚਿਤ੍ ਸੁਰਾ ਦਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ੇ ਕਿਂ ਨ ਤਦਾ ਤ੍ਵਦਾਨਨੇ ॥7॥
Meaning
ਕੁਹਚਿਤ੍-ਵਨਮ੍- - somewhere the forests; ਅਂਬੁਧਿਃ ਕ੍ਵਚਿਤ੍ - the oceans somewhere; ਕ੍ਵਚਿਤ੍-ਅਭ੍ਰਂ - somewhere the sky; ਕੁਹਚਿਤ੍-ਰਸਾਤਲਮ੍ - somewhere the Rasaatala; ਮਨੁਜਾਃ ਦਨੁਜਾਃ - human beings, demons; ਕ੍ਵਚਿਤ੍ ਸੁਰਾਃ - somewhere the devas; ਦਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ੇ ਕਿਂ ਨ - seen what not was; ਤਦਾ ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਆਨਨੇ - at that time in Thy mouth;
Translation
At that time, in Thy mouth what not was seen by Yashodaa? Somewhere the forests and oceans, somewhere the skies and Rasaatala, human beings and demons, gods and devas!
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਕਲਸ਼ਾਂਬੁਧਿਸ਼ਾਯਿਨਂ ਪੁਨਃ ਪਰਵੈਕੁਂਠਪਦਾਧਿਵਾਸਿਨਮ੍ ।
ਸ੍ਵਪੁਰਸ਼੍ਚ ਨਿਜਾਰ੍ਭਕਾਤ੍ਮਕਂ ਕਤਿਧਾ ਤ੍ਵਾਂ ਨ ਦਦਰ੍ਸ਼ ਸਾ ਮੁਖੇ ॥8॥
Meaning
ਕਲਸ਼-ਅਂਬੁਧਿ-ਸ਼ਾਯਿਨਂ - in the milk ocean, the recliner; ਪੁਨਃ ਪਰ-ਵੈਕੁਂਠਪਦ- - as the Paramaatamaa, in the Vaikuntha abode; ਅਧਿਵਾਸਿਨਮ੍ - the resident; ਸ੍ਵ-ਪੁਰਃ-ਚ - in front of herself; ਨਿਜ-ਅਰ੍ਭਕ-ਆਤ੍ਮਕਂ - as her own son; ਕਤਿਧਾ - in how many ways; ਤ੍ਵਾਂ ਨ ਦਦਰ੍ਸ਼ - Thee did not see; ਸਾ ਮੁਖੇ - she in (Thy) mouth;
Translation
Yashodaa saw in Thy mouth the recliner in the milk ocean. Again she saw Paramaatamaa, the resident of the Vaikunth abode. Then she saw Thee as her son in front of her. In how many different ways did she not see Thee.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵਿਕਸਦ੍ਭੁਵਨੇ ਮੁਖੋਦਰੇ ਨਨੁ ਭੂਯੋਪਿ ਤਥਾਵਿਧਾਨਨਃ ।
ਅਨਯਾ ਸ੍ਫੁਟਮੀਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤੋ ਭਵਾਨਨਵਸ੍ਥਾਂ ਜਗਤਾਂ ਬਤਾਤਨੋਤ੍ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਵਿਕਸਤ੍-ਭੁਵਨੇ - revealing the worlds; ਮੁਖ-ਉਦਰੇ - in the inside of the mouth; ਨਨੁ ਭੂਯਃ-ਅਪਿ - indeed then again also; ਤਥਾ-ਵਿਧ-ਆਨਨਃ - that same type of face; ਅਨਯਾ ਸ੍ਫੁਟਮ੍-ਈਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਃ - by her was clearly seen; ਭਵਾਨ੍-ਅਨਵਸ੍ਥਾਂ - Thou as the infinitude; ਜਗਤਾਂ - of the universe; ਬਤ੍-ਆਤਨੋਤ੍ - definitely expounded;
Translation
In the cavity of Thy mouth she saw all the worlds, where even Thou were present with Thy mouth open, once again, in which again all the worlds were seen; and so on endlessly. This definitely expounded Thou as the infinitude of the universe.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਧ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਧਿਯਂ ਤਦਾ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਂ ਜਨਨੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਣਯੇਨ ਮੋਹਯਨ੍ ।
ਸ੍ਤਨਮਂਬ ਦਿਸ਼ੇਤ੍ਯੁਪਾਸਜਨ੍ ਭਗਵਨ੍ਨਦ੍ਭੁਤਬਾਲ ਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਧ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵ-ਧਿਯਂ - holding the reality in the mind; ਤਦਾ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਂ - at that time for a moment; ਜਨਨੀਂ ਤਾਂ - to the mother; ਪ੍ਰਣਯੇਨ ਮੋਹਯਨ੍ - by affection enchanting (deluding); ਸ੍ਤਨਮ੍-ਅਂਬ ਦਿਸ਼- - breast milk O Mother give'; ਇਤਿ-ਉਪਾਸਜਨ੍ - thus embracing; ਭਗਵਨ੍- - O Lord!; ਅਦ੍ਭੁਤ-ਬਾਲ - O Wonderful Child!; ਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍ - protect me;
Translation
At that time for a moment, Yashodaa had a flash of illumination. Thou with affection deluded her and clung to her, calling her 'Mother' and demanded to be suckled. O Lord! Thou the Wondrous Child! Deign to protect me.
