ਗੂਢਂ ਵਸੁਦੇਵਗਿਰਾ ਕਰ੍ਤੁਂ ਤੇ ਨਿਸ਼੍ਕ੍ਰਿਯਸ੍ਯ ਸਂਸ੍ਕਾਰਾਨ੍ ।
ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍ਗਤਹੋਰਾਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵੋ ਗਰ੍ਗਮੁਨਿਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਤ੍ ਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਂ ਵਿਭੋ ਗਤਵਾਨ੍ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਗੂਢਮ੍ - secretly (said); ਵਸੁਦੇਵ-ਗਿਰਾ - the words of Vasudeva (directed by that); ਕਰ੍ਤੁਂ ਤੇ - to do (perform) Thy; ਨਿਸ਼੍ਕ੍ਰਿਯਸ੍ਯ - who are above all rites and rituals; ਸਂਸ੍ਕਾਰਾਨ੍ - (Thy) sacraments; ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍-ਗਤ-ਹੋਰਾ-ਤਤ੍ਵਃ - an expert in astrology; ਗਰ੍ਗ-ਮੁਨਿਃ - Garga Muni; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਮ੍ - to Thy house; ਵਿਭੋ - O Lord!; ਗਤਵਾਨ੍ - went;
Translation
O All pervading Lord! Thou are above and beyond all ceremonies and rites. Yet, Garga Muni an expert at astronomy and astrology, went to Thy house at the secret request of Vasudeva, to perform sacraments for Thee.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨਂਦੋਥ ਨਂਦਿਤਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਦਿਸ਼੍ਟਂ ਮਾਨਯਨ੍ਨਮੁਂ ਯਮਿਨਾਮ੍ ।
ਮਂਦਸ੍ਮਿਤਾਰ੍ਦ੍ਰਮੂਚੇ ਤ੍ਵਤ੍ਸਂਸ੍ਕਾਰਾਨ੍ ਵਿਧਾਤੁਮੁਤ੍ਸੁਕਧੀਃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਨਂਦਃ-ਅਥ - Nanda, then; ਨਂਦਿਤ-ਆਤ੍ਮਾ - delightfully; ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਦਿਸ਼੍ਟਮ੍ - the greatest of all; ਮਾਨਯਨ੍-ਅਮੁਮ੍ - honouring, this (Garga Muni); ਯਮਿਨਾਮ੍ - (greatest) of all the sages; ਮਂਦ੍-ਸ੍ਮਿਤ-ਆਰ੍ਦ੍ਰਮ੍-ਊਚੇ - with a gentle smile said (requested); ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਸਂਸ੍ਕਾਰਨ੍ - sacraments for Thee; ਵਿਧਾਤੁਮ੍-ਉਤ੍ਸੁਕ-ਧੀਃ - to perform (who) was eager;
Translation
Nanda was very delighted and he honoured the greatest of all the sages Garga Muni, who was eager to perform the sacraments for Thee. He then, with a gentle smile requested the sage to perform the rites.

ਯਦੁਵਂਸ਼ਾਚਾਰ੍ਯਤ੍ਵਾਤ੍ ਸੁਨਿਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਮਿਦਮਾਰ੍ਯ ਕਾਰ੍ਯਮਿਤਿ ਕਥਯਨ੍ ।
ਗਰ੍ਗੋ ਨਿਰ੍ਗਤਪੁਲਕਸ਼੍ਚਕ੍ਰੇ ਤਵ ਸਾਗ੍ਰਜਸ੍ਯ ਨਾਮਾਨਿ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਯਦੁਵਂਸ਼- - of the Yadu clan; ਆਚਾਰ੍ਯਤ੍ਵਾਤ੍ - being the priest; ਸੁਨਿਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਮ੍-ਇਦਮ੍- - very secretly this; ਆਰ੍ਯ ਕਾਰ੍ਯਮ੍-ਇਤਿ - O Respected One (Nanda), should be done, thus; ਕਥਯਨ੍ ਗਰ੍ਗਃ - saying, sage Garga; ਨਿਰ੍ਗਤ-ਪੁਲਕਃ- - with horripilation; ਚਕ੍ਰੇ ਤਵ - performed, Thy with Thy elder brother's; ਸਾਗ੍ਰਜਸ੍ਯ ਨਾਮਾਨਿ - naming (ceremony);
Translation
Sage Garga said,'O Respected Nanda, since I am the priest of the Yadu clan, this ceremony must be performed in great secrecy'. Saying so, with horripilation over his body he performed the naming ceremony of Thee and Thy elder brother.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਕਥਮਸ੍ਯ ਨਾਮ ਕੁਰ੍ਵੇ ਸਹਸ੍ਰਨਾਮ੍ਨੋ ਹ੍ਯਨਂਤਨਾਮ੍ਨੋ ਵਾ ।
ਇਤਿ ਨੂਨਂ ਗਰ੍ਗਮੁਨਿਸ਼੍ਚਕ੍ਰੇ ਤਵ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰਹਸਿ ਵਿਭੋ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਕਥਮ੍-ਅਸ੍ਯ - how, for this (child); ਨਾਮ ਕੁਰ੍ਵੇ - naming should I do; ਸਹਸ੍ਰ-ਨਾਮ੍ਨਃ ਹਿ- - (who) having a thousand names indeed; ਅਨਂਤ-ਨਾਮ੍ਨਃ ਵਾ - or rather having endless names; ਇਤਿ ਨੂਨਂ - thus surely (thinking); ਗਰ੍ਗ-ਮੁਨਿਃ- - Garga Muni; ਚਕ੍ਰੇ ਤਵ ਨਾਮ - performed Thy naming; ਨਾਮ ਰਹਸਿ - in great secrecy; ਵਿਭੋ - O Lord!;
Translation
How should I do the naming of this child? He indeed has thousands of names or rather endless names. O Lord! May be that sage Garga thinking like this, performed Thy naming in great secrecy.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਧਾਤੁਣਕਾਰਾਭ੍ਯਾਂ ਸਤ੍ਤਾਨਂਦਾਤ੍ਮਤਾਂ ਕਿਲਾਭਿਲਪਤ੍ ।
ਜਗਦਘਕਰ੍ਸ਼ਿਤ੍ਵਂ ਵਾ ਕਥਯਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਃ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਣਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਵ੍ਯਤਨੋਤ੍ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿ-ਧਾਤੁ- - Krish, the root (verb); ਣ-ਕਾਰਾਭ੍ਯਾਮ੍ - and with N suffix (by putting the two together); ਸਤ੍ਤਾ-ਆਨਂਦ-ਆਤ੍ਮਤਾਮ੍ - Existence Bliss (being Thy) real nature; ਕਿਲ-ਅਭਿਲਪਤ੍ - indeed denoting; ਜਗਤ੍-ਅਘ-ਕਰ੍ਸ਼ਿਤ੍ਵਂ ਵਾ - or of (the people of) the world, the sins, drawing away; ਕਥਯਤ੍-ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਃ - declaring, the sage; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਣ-ਨਾਮ ਤੇ - the name Krishna to Thee; ਵ੍ਯਤਨੋਤ੍ - gave;
Translation
The putting together of the root of the verb Krish and the suffix N, denoting the combining of Existence and absolute Bliss, which is Thy real nature, declaring, the sage gave Thee the name Krishna. Also signifying the drawing away of the sins of the people of the world, the name Krishna was given to Thee.

ਅਨ੍ਯਾਂਸ਼੍ਚ ਨਾਮਭੇਦਾਨ੍ ਵ੍ਯਾਕੁਰ੍ਵਨ੍ਨਗ੍ਰਜੇ ਚ ਰਾਮਾਦੀਨ੍ ।
ਅਤਿਮਾਨੁਸ਼ਾਨੁਭਾਵਂ ਨ੍ਯਗਦਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਾਮਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਯਨ੍ ਪਿਤ੍ਰੇ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਅਨ੍ਯਾਨ੍-ਚ ਨਾਮ-ਭੇਦਾਨ੍ - and other different names; ਵ੍ਯਾਕੁਰ੍ਵਨ੍- - giving (like Vaasudeva); ਅਗ੍ਰਜੇ ਚ ਰਾਮ-ਆਦੀਨ੍ - and to Thy elder brother Raama etc (calling thus); ਅਤਿਮਾਨੁਸ਼-ਅਨੁਭਾਵਂ - (of a) superhuman disposition; ਨ੍ਯਗਦਤ੍- - told (indicated); ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍-ਅਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਯਨ੍ - Thee not revealing; ਪਿਤ੍ਰੇ - to (Thy) father;
Translation
The sage also gave Thee other different names like Vaasudeva. Then he gave the name Raama etc to Thy elder brother. Having done so, Garg Muni indicated to Thy having superhuman powers and disposition, to Thy father. Yet he did not fully reveal Thy real identity as Lord Himself.

ਸ੍ਨਿਹ੍ਯਤਿ ਯਸ੍ਤਵ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੇ ਮੁਹ੍ਯਤਿ ਸ ਨ ਮਾਯਿਕੈਃ ਪੁਨਃ ਸ਼ੋਕੈਃ ।
ਦ੍ਰੁਹ੍ਯਤਿ ਯਃ ਸ ਤੁ ਨਸ਼੍ਯੇਦਿਤ੍ਯਵਦਤ੍ਤੇ ਮਹਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਵਰ੍ਯਃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ਸ੍ਨਿਹ੍ਯਤਿ ਯਃ-ਤਵ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੇ - whoever loves your son; ਮੁਹ੍ਯਤਿ ਸ ਨ ਮਾਯਿਕੈਃ - he will not be deluded by Maayaa; ਪੁਨਃ ਸ਼ੋਕੈਃ - (and) again by sorrows; ਦ੍ਰੁਹ੍ਯਤਿ ਯਃ - he who goes against him; ਸ ਤੁ ਨਸ਼੍ਯੇਤ੍- - he certainly will be destroyed; ਇਤਿ-ਅਵਦਤ੍- - thus said; ਤੇ ਮਹਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਮ੍- - Thy glory; ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਵਰ੍ਯਃ - the great sage;
Translation
Who so ever loves your son will not be deluded by Maayaa and so will not be overcome by sorrows thereafter. And who so ever assails him will certainly perish.' Thus the great sage described Thy glory and greatness.

ਜੇਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਬਹੁਤਰਦੈਤ੍ਯਾਨ੍ ਨੇਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਨਿਜਬਂਧੁਲੋਕਮਮਲਪਦਮ੍ ।
ਸ਼੍ਰੋਸ਼੍ਯਸਿ ਸੁਵਿਮਲਕੀਰ੍ਤੀਰਸ੍ਯੇਤਿ ਭਵਦ੍ਵਿਭੂਤਿਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਰੂਚੇ ॥8॥
Meaning
ਜੇਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਬਹੁਤਰ-ਦੈਤ੍ਯਾਨ੍ - will conquer many Asuras; ਨੇਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਨਿਜਬਂਧੁ-ਲੋਕਮ੍- - will take his own people; ਅਮਲ-ਪਦਮ੍ - to the pure realm; ਸ਼੍ਰੋਸ਼੍ਯਸਿ - will make you hear; ਸੁਵਿਮਲ-ਕੀਰ੍ਤੀਃ-ਅਸ੍ਯ- - very pure fame, his; ਇਤਿ ਭਵਤ੍-ਵਿਭੂਤਿਮ੍- - thus Thy greatness; ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਃ-ਊਚੇ - the sage spoke;
Translation
He will conquer many Asuras and will take his own people to the realms of purity. You will have occasions to hear of his untainted pure fame.' Thus the sage spoke of Thy greatness.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਮੁਨੈਵ ਸਰ੍ਵਦੁਰ੍ਗਂ ਤਰਿਤਾਸ੍ਥ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਸ੍ਥਮਤ੍ਰ ਤਿਸ਼੍ਠਧ੍ਵਮ੍ ।
ਹਰਿਰੇਵੇਤ੍ਯਨਭਿਲਪਨ੍ਨਿਤ੍ਯਾਦਿ ਤ੍ਵਾਮਵਰ੍ਣਯਤ੍ ਸ ਮੁਨਿਃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਅਮੁਨਾ-ਏਵ - by him alone; ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਦੁਰ੍ਗਂ ਤਰਿਤਾਸ੍ਥ - all obstacles (you) will cross; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਆਸ੍ਥਮ੍-ਅਤ੍ਰ - placing your faith here; ਤਿਸ਼੍ਠਧ੍ਵਮ੍ - remain; ਹਰਿਃ-ਏਵ-ਇਤਿ- - Hari only is this; ਅਨਭਿਲਪਨ੍- - not saying; ਇਤ੍ਯਾਦਿ - in this manner; ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍-ਅਵਰ੍ਣਯਤ੍ - Thee described; ਸ ਮੁਨਿਃ - that sage;
Translation
By his help alone you will be able to overcome all obstacles. Remain with your full faith placed in him.' Thus without saying that Thou were Hari, the sage thus described Thee.

ਗਰ੍ਗੇਥ ਨਿਰ੍ਗਤੇਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ ਨਂਦਿਤਨਂਦਾਦਿਨਂਦ੍ਯਮਾਨਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ ।
ਮਦ੍ਗਦਮੁਦ੍ਗਤਕਰੁਣੋ ਨਿਰ੍ਗਮਯ ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਰੁਤ੍ਪੁਰਾਧੀਸ਼ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਗਰ੍ਗੇ-ਅਥ - then Garg Muni; ਨਿਰ੍ਗਤੇ-ਅਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ - having left, he,; ਨਂਦਿਤ-ਨਂਦ-ਆਦਿ- - delighted Nanda and others; ਨਂਦ੍ਯਮਾਨਃ-ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ - endeared Thou; ਮਤ੍-ਗਦਮ੍- - my ailments; ਉਦ੍ਗਤ-ਕਰੁਣਃ - (Thou) full of compassion; ਨਿਰ੍ਗਮਯ - remove; ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਰੁਤ੍ਪੁਰਾਧੀਸ਼ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Then Garga Muni went away. Nanda and the others were very delighted and looked after Thee endearingly. O Lord of Guruvaayur! who are full of compassion, remove my ailments.
