ਪ੍ਰਾਚੇਤਸਸ੍ਤੁ ਭਗਵਨ੍ਨਪਰੋ ਹਿ ਦਕ੍ਸ਼-
ਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਤ੍ਸੇਵਨਂ ਵ੍ਯਧਿਤ ਸਰ੍ਗਵਿਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍ਧਿਕਾਮਃ ।
ਆਵਿਰ੍ਬਭੂਵਿਥ ਤਦਾ ਲਸਦਸ਼੍ਟਬਾਹੁ-
ਸ੍ਤਸ੍ਮੈ ਵਰਂ ਦਦਿਥ ਤਾਂ ਚ ਵਧੂਮਸਿਕ੍ਨੀਮ੍ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਾਚੇਤਃ-ਤੁ - a son of Prachetas, indeed,; ਭਗਵਨ੍- - O Lord!; ਅਪਰੋ ਹਿ ਦਕ੍ਸ਼ਃ- - another Daksha (not Daksha Prajaapati); ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਸੇਵਨਂ ਵ੍ਯਧਿਤ - Thy worship performed; ਸਰ੍ਗ-ਵਿਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍ਧਿ-ਕਾਮਃ - the species to multiply desirous; ਆਵਿਰ੍ਬਭੂਵਿਥ ਤਦਾ - Thou appeared then; ਲਸਤ੍-ਅਸ਼੍ਟ-ਬਾਹੁਃ- - with eight resplendent arms; ਤਸ੍ਮੈ ਵਰਂ ਦਦਿਥ - (and) gave the boon; ਤਾਂ ਚ ਵਧੂਮ੍- - and also that bride; ਅਸਿਕ੍ਨੀਮ੍ - (named) Asikni;
Translation
The son of one of the Prachetas, another Daksha, indeed, desirous of multiplying the progeny, worshipped Thee. Then Thou appeared with eight resplendent arms and gave him a boon and also Asikni as wife.

ਤਸ੍ਯਾਤ੍ਮਜਾਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਯੁਤਮੀਸ਼ ਪੁਨਸ੍ਸਹਸ੍ਰਂ
ਸ਼੍ਰੀਨਾਰਦਸ੍ਯ ਵਚਸਾ ਤਵ ਮਾਰ੍ਗਮਾਪੁਃ ।

ਭਕ੍ਤੋਤ੍ਤਮਸ੍ਤ੍ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਰਨੁਗ੍ਰਹਮੇਵ ਮੇਨੇ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਤਸ੍ਯ-ਆਤ੍ਮਜਾਃ- - his sons; ਤੁ-ਅਯੁਤਮ੍- - indeed ten thousand; ਈਸ਼ - O Lord!; ਪੁਨਃ-ਸਹਸ੍ਰਂ - again (also) one thousand; ਸ਼੍ਰੀਨਾਰਦਸ੍ਯ ਵਚਸਾ - by the advice of Shree Naarada; ਤਵ ਮਾਰ੍ਗਮ੍-ਆਪੁਃ - took to Thy path (of meditation etc); ਨ-ਐਕਤ੍ਰ-ਵਾਸਮ੍- - (you) will not be residing in one place; ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਯੇ - to the sage (Naarada); ਸ ਮੁਮੋਚ ਸ਼ਾਪਂ - he (Daksha) gave the curse; ਭਕ੍ਤ-ਉਤ੍ਤਮਃ-ਤੁ-ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਃ- - highest of (Thy) devotees, the sage; ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹਮ੍-ਏਵ ਮੇਨੇ - took it for a blessing.;
Translation
His eleven thousand sons, on the advice of Shree Naarada took to the path of devotion to Thee, to attain liberation. Daksha was displeased with Naarada and so pronounced a curse on him that he would not have any fixed place of residence. Sage Naarada, the highest of devotees, considered it only as blessing.

Meaning
ਸ਼ਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਯਾ ਤਤਃ ਦੁਹਿਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਭਿਃ - then by ( his) sixty daughters; ਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਜਤਃ ਕੁਲ-ਔਘਾਨ੍ - (he) was multiplying the species; ਦੌਹਿਤ੍ਰ-ਸੂਨੁਃ-ਅਥ ਤਸ੍ਯ - then one of his daughter's son's son; ਸ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਰੂਪਃ - that (named) Vishwaroopa; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਸ੍ਤੋਤ੍ਰ-ਵਰ੍ਮਿਤਮ੍- - Thy protective hymn; ਅਜਾਪਯਤ੍-ਇਂਦ੍ਰਮ੍- - made Indra recite; ਆਜੌ - in a battle; ਦੇਵ - O Lord!; ਤ੍ਵਦੀਯ-ਮਹਿਮਾ - Thy glory; ਖਲੁ ਸਰ੍ਵਜੈਤ੍ਰਃ - indeed is victorious over all;
Translation
Then Daksha multiplied the species through his sixty daughters. His daughter's son's son named Vishwaroopa made Indra win the battle against the Asuras. Indra was provided protection and victory by learning from Vishwaroopa the hymn addressed to Thee (Naaraayana Kavacha). O Lord! Thy glory can indeed conquer all.

Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਾਕ੍- - once upon a time; ਸ਼ੂਰਸੇਨ-ਵਿਸ਼ਯੇ - in Shoorsena's kingdom; ਕਿਲ ਚਿਤ੍ਰਕੇਤੁਃ - indeed, Chitraketu; ਪੁਤ੍ਰ-ਆਗ੍ਰਹੀ ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪਤਿਃ - desirous of a son, the king; ਅਂਗਿਰਸਃ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਾਤ੍ - by sage Angirasa's blessings; ਲਬ੍ਧ੍ਵਾ-ਏਕ-ਪੁਤ੍ਰਮ੍- - getting one son; ਅਥ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਹਤੇ ਸਪਤ੍ਨੀਸਂਘੈਃ- - then, there (the son) was killed by the other wives; ਅਮੁਹ੍ਯਤ੍-ਅਵਸ਼ਃ- - and overcome by grief, he fainted; ਤਵ ਮਾਯਯਾ ਅਸੌ - owing to the power of Thy Maayaa;
Translation
Once upon a time, in the kingdom named Shoorsena the king Chitraketu was desirous of getting a son. By the blessings of sage Angirasa he got a son. The child was killed by his other wives out of jealousy. The king fainted with grief owing to the power of Thy Maayaa.

ਤਂ ਨਾਰਦਃ-ਤੁ - him, Naarada then; ਸਮਮ੍-ਅਂਗਿਰਸਾ - along with Angirasa; ਦਯਾਲੁਃ - merciful (Naarada); ਸਂਪ੍ਰਾਪ੍ਯ - approaching; ਤਾਵਤ੍-ਉਪਦਰ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ - then showed; ਸੁਤਸ੍ਯ ਜੀਵਮ੍ - the son's soul; ਕਸ੍ਯ-ਅਸ੍ਮਿ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ(ਃ) ਇਤਿ - whose son am I, thus; ਤਸ੍ਯ ਗਿਰਾ - by his speech; ਵਿਮੋਹਂ ਤ੍ਯਕ੍ਤ੍ਵਾ - giving up delusion; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਅਰ੍ਚਨ-ਵਿਧੌ - in the ways of Thy worship; ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪਤਿਂ ਨ੍ਯਯੁਂਕ੍ਤ - gave instructions to the king;
Translation
The merciful Naarada and sage Angirasa went to Chitraketu and showed him the soul of his dead son. The soul asked 'whose son am I?' These words dispelled the king's delusion. The sages then instructed him in the ways of Thy worship.

Meaning
ਸ੍ਤੋਤ੍ਰਂ ਚ ਮਂਤ੍ਰਮ੍-ਅਪਿ - hymns and Mantras; ਨਾਰਦਤਃ-ਅਥ ਲਬ੍ਧ੍ਵਾ - from Naarada then receiving; ਤੋਸ਼ਾਯ ਸ਼ੇਸ਼-ਵਪੁਸ਼ਃ - for propitiation of (Thee) (who were) in the form of Aadishesha; ਨਨੁ ਤੇ ਤਪਸ੍ਯਨ੍ - practising austerities to Thee alone; ਵਿਦ੍ਯਾਧਰ-ਅਧਿਪਤਿਤਾਂ - the leadership of Vidyaadharas; ਸ ਹਿ ਸਪ੍ਤ-ਰਾਤ੍ਰੇ ਲਬ੍ਧ੍ਵਾ- - he obtained only in seven days; ਅਪਿ-ਅਕੁਂਠਮਤਿਃ- - still dissatisfied; ਅਨ੍ਵਭਜਤ੍-ਭਵਂਤਮ੍ - (he) continued to worship Thee;
Translation
Then receiving hymns and Mantras from Naarada, he practised austerities for propitiating Thee who were in the form of Aadishesha. Within seven days he obtained the leadership of the Vidyaadharas. Still dissatisfied, he continued to worship Thee with the same fervour.

Meaning
ਤਸ੍ਮੈ - to him (Chitraketu); ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਣਾਲ-ਧਵਲੇਨ - as white as a lotus stalk; ਸਹਸ੍ਰ-ਸ਼ੀਰ੍ਸ਼੍ਣਾ - with a thousand heads; ਰੂਪੇਣ - in (such a) form; ਬਦ੍ਧਨੁਤਿ-ਸਿਦ੍ਧਗਣ-ਆਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇਨ - singing hymns of praises,by Sidhdhas, surrounded; ਪ੍ਰਾਦੁਰ੍ਭਵਨ੍-ਅਚਿਰਤਃ - quickly manifested; ਨੁਤਿਭਿਃ ਪ੍ਰਸਨ੍ਨਃ - with the hymns pleased; ਦਤ੍ਵਾ-ਆਤ੍ਮ-ਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਮ੍- - imparting knowledge of self; ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਯ - and blessing (him); ਤਿਰੋਦਧਾਥ - Thou disappeared;
Translation
Presently Thou revealed Thyself to him in Thy form of Aadishesha, with a thousand hoods and white like a lotus stalk,surrounded by bands of Sidhdhaas singing hymns of praise. Pleased with the hymns, Thou blessed him and imparted to him the knowledge of the self and then Thou disappeared.

ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਭਕ੍ਤ-ਮੌਲਿਃ-ਅਥ ਸ- - the greatest of devotees ,he, then; ਅਪਿ ਚ - and also; ਲਕ੍ਸ਼-ਲਕ੍ਸ਼ਂ ਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਾਣਿ - for many many years; ਹਰ੍ਸ਼ੁਲ-ਮਨਾ - happily (blissfully); ਭੁਵਨੇਸ਼ੁ - in all the worlds; ਕਾਮਂ ਸਂਗਾਪਯਨ੍ - made to be sung; ਗੁਣਗਣਂ ਤਵ - Thy glories; ਸੁਂਦਰੀਭਿਃ - by beautiful Vidyaadharis; ਸਂਗ-ਅਤਿਰੇਕ-ਰਹਿਤਃ - without much sensuous attachment; ਲਲਿਤਂ ਚਚਾਰ - happily wandered about;
Translation
This great devotee Chitraketu for many many years wandered about happily in all the worlds without much attachment. He led the troupe of beautiful Vidyaadharis and also caused Thy glories and excellences to be sung, to his hearts content.

Meaning
ਅਤ੍ਯਂਤ-ਸਂਗ-ਵਿਲਯਾਯ - to rid (himself) of all sensuous hankerings; ਭਵਤ੍-ਪ੍ਰਣੁਨ੍ਨਃ ਨੂਨਂ - prompted by Thee, it seems,; ਸ ਰੂਪ੍ਯਗਿਰਿਮ੍-ਆਪ੍ਯ - he, reaching the Silver mountain (Kailaash); ਮਹਤ੍-ਸਮਾਜੇ - in the assembly of sages; ਨਿਸ਼੍ਸ਼ਂਕਮ੍- - without any inhibition; ਅਂਕ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਵਲ੍ਲਭਮ੍- - who had seated his consort on his lap; ਅਂਗਜਾਰਿਂ ਤਂ ਸ਼ਂਕਰਂ - the destroyer of Kaamdeva, that Shankara; ਪਰਿਹਸਨ੍- - ridiculing (him); ਉਮਯਾ-ਅਭਿਸ਼ੇਪੇ - was cursed by Umaa;
Translation
To rid himself completely of all sensuous hankerings, prompted by Thee, he once went to Mount Kailaash. There he saw the destroyer of Kaamadeva , Shankara, sitting in the assembly of sages with his consort Umaa seated on his lap without any concern. Chitraketu mocked at him and in turn was cursed by Umaa.

ਨਿਸ੍ਸਂਭ੍ਰਮਃ- - unperturbed; ਤੁ-ਅਯਮ੍- - however, he (Chitraketu); ਅਯਾਚਿਤ-ਸ਼ਾਪ-ਮੋਕ੍ਸ਼ਃ - did not ask for relief from the curse; ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਰਾਸੁਰਤ੍ਵਮ੍-ਉਪਗਮ੍ਯ - as vritraasura being born; ਸੁਰੇਂਦ੍ਰ-ਯੋਧੀ - against Indra fighting; ਭਕ੍ਤ੍ਯਾ- - by his devotion; ਆਤ੍ਮਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵ-ਕਥਨੈਃ - and by imparting knowledge of the self; ਸਮਰੇ - in the battle,; ਵਿਚਿਤ੍ਰਂ - surprisingly,; ਸ਼ਤ੍ਰੋਃ-ਅਪਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਮ੍- - the delusion of the enemy also; ਅਪਾਸ੍ਯ - removing; ਗਤਃ ਪਦਂ ਤੇ - reached Thy abode;
Translation
Unperturbed, Chitraketu did not ask for relief from the curse, and was born as Vritraasura. By his devotion, while fighting in the battle against Indra, he imparted the knowledge of the self to Indra and he removed the delusion of even his enemy. Thereby he reached Thy abode. What a wonder!

ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਸੇਵਨੇਨ - by worshipping Thee; ਦਿਤਿਃ- - Diti; ਇਂਦ੍ਰ-ਵਧ-ਉਦ੍ਯਤਾ-ਅਪਿ - though wanting to kill Indra; ਤਾਨ੍-ਪ੍ਰਤ੍ਯੁਤ- - them, instead,; ਇਂਦ੍ਰ-ਸੁਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦਃ ਮਰੁਤਃ- - Indra's friends Maruts; ਅਭਿਲੇਭੇ - begot; ਦੁਸ਼੍ਟ-ਆਸ਼ਯੇ-ਅਪਿ - even for evil mind persons; ਸ਼ੁਭਦਾ-ਏਵ - Thy worship; ਭਵਤ੍-ਨਿਸ਼ੇਵਾ - gives good only; ਤਤ੍-ਤਾਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਃ-ਤ੍ਵਮ੍- - Thou who are thus; ਅਵ ਮਾਂ - protect me; ਪਵਨ-ਆਲਯ-ਈਸ਼ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Diti, the mother of the Asuras, worshipped Thee in order to have a son who would kill Indra, but instead gave birth to Maruts who became friends of Indra. By worshipping Thee, even an evil minded person receives good only. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are like that, deign to protect me.
