ਕੇਸ਼-ਪਾਸ਼-ਧ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ- - the beautiful lock of hair fixed; ਪਿਂਛਿਕਾ-ਵਿਤਤਿ- - by a bunch of peacock feathers; ਸਂਚਲਨ੍- - dangling; ਮਕਰ-ਕੁਂਡਲਮ੍ - fish shaped earrings; ਹਾਰ-ਜਾਲ- - many beautiful necklaces and garlands; ਵਨ-ਮਾਲਿਕਾ-ਲਲਿਤਮ੍- - of flowers adorning (the neck); ਅਂਗ-ਰਾਗ-ਘਨ-ਸੌਰਭਮ੍ - the body smeared with sandal paste and other unguents emitting strong fragrance; ਪੀਤ-ਚੇਲ - the yellow silk garment; ਧ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਕਾਂਚਿਕਾ-ਅਂਚਿਤਮ੍- - fastened by the golden girdle adorning (the waist); ਉਦਂਚਤ੍-ਅਂਸ਼ੁ- - flashing forth rays; ਮਣਿ-ਨੂਪੁਰਮ੍ - gem studded anklets; ਰਾਸ-ਕੇਲਿ- - the Raas Dance; ਪਰਿਭੂਸ਼ਿਤਮ੍ - adornments; ਤਵ ਹਿ - Thy indeed; ਰੂਪਮ੍-ਈਸ਼ - the lustrous form, O Lord!; ਕਲਯਾਮਹੇ - (we) meditate upon;
Translation
A bunch of peacock feathers adorning the beautiful locks of hair; a pair of fish shaped earrings dangling from the ears; many necklaces intermingled with flower garlands adorning the neck; a golden girdle fastened to the yellow silk garment adorning the waist; sandal paste and other unguents smeared on the body emitting strong fragrance; gem studded anklets flashing forth a glow; on such a radiant form of Thee, with decorations appropriate for the Raasa, we meditate on.

ਤਾਵਤ੍-ਏਵ - then only; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਮਂਡਨੇ - having done the makeup; ਕਲਿਤ-ਕਂਚੁਲੀਕ- - and put on the bodice; ਕੁਚ-ਮਂਡਲੇ - on the breasts; ਗਂਡ-ਲੋਲ - dangling on the cheeks; ਮਣਿ-ਕੁਂਡਲੇ - the begemmed earrings; ਯੁਵਤਿ-ਮਂਡਲੇ- - the group of young women; ਅਥ ਪਰਿਮਂਡਲੇ - then forming a circle; ਅਂਤਰਾ - in between; ਸਕਲ-ਸੁਂਦਰੀ- - all the beautiful women; ਯੁਗਲਮ੍- - every two of them; ਇਂਦਿਰਾ-ਰਮਣ - O Thou Consort of Laxmi!; ਸਂਚਰਨ੍ - moving about; ਮਂਜੁਲਾਂ ਤਦਨੁ - the beautiful, then; ਰਾਸਕੇਲਿਮ੍-ਅਯਿ - the Raas Dance O Thou; ਕਂਜਨਾਭ - Padmanaabha; ਸਮੁਪਾਦਧਾਃ - performed;
Translation
Then only, having done the make up and putting on the bodice on the breasts, and begemmed earrings dangling on the cheeks, the group of young women formed a circle surrounding Thee. O Consort of Laxmi! O Padmanaabha! Thou moved about in between every two of the beautiful women and performed the very beautiful Raas Dance.

ਵਾਸੁਦੇਵ ਤਵ - O Vaasudeva Thy; ਭਾਸਮਾਨਮ੍-ਇਹ - resplendent here; ਰਾਸ-ਕੇਲਿ-ਰਸਸੌਰਭਮ੍ - Raasa Leelaa's resplendent and fragrant beauty; ਦੂਰਤਃ-ਅਪਿ ਖਲੁ - from far also indeed; ਨਾਰਦ-ਆਗਦਿਤਮ੍- - as Naarada described; ਆਕਲਯ੍ਯ - having heard; ਕੁਤੁਕ-ਆਕੁਲਾ - (and so) filled with eagerness; ਵੇਸ਼-ਭੂਸ਼ਣ-ਵਿਲਾਸ-ਪੇਸ਼ਲ- - in dressing up with jewellery and in amorous display, experts; ਵਿਲਾਸਿਨੀ-ਸ਼ਤ-ਸਮਾਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾ - beautiful women in hundreds surrounded; ਨਾਕਤਃ - from the heaven; ਯੁਗਪਤ੍-ਆਗਤਾ - all together came; ਵਿਯਤਿ ਵੇਗਤਃ- - to the sky very fast; ਅਥ ਸੁਰ-ਮਂਡਲੀ - then the gods in groups;
Translation
O Vaasudeva! Naarada described Thy resplendent, fragrant and beautiful Raas Leelaa. Hearing about it from far, groups of gods, full of eagerness came from the heaven and quickly gathered in the sky. They were accompanied by hundreds of beautiful women who were experts in dressing up and in adorning themselves with jewellery and also in amorous display.

ਵੇਣੁ-ਨਾਦ- - the flute's key note; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਤਾਨ- - setting the tune; ਦਾਨ-ਕਲ- - giving the sweet; ਗਾਨ-ਰਾਗ- - song (and) raagas; ਗਤਿ-ਯੋਜਨਾ- - flow and rhythm; ਲੋਭਨੀਯ- - the enchanting; ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦੁ-ਪਾਦ-ਪਾਤ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ- - soft foot beat making; ਤਾਲ-ਮੇਲਨ- - (the keeping of) the beats; ਮਨੋਹਰਮ੍ - very pleasant; ਪਾਣਿ-ਸਂਕ੍ਵਣਿਤ- - hands clapping; ਕਂਕਣਂ ਚ - and (mingled with the) sound of bangles; ਮੁਹੁਃ-ਅਂਸ-ਲਂਬਿਤ- - again and again on the shoulders (of the Gopikaas) placed; ਕਰ-ਅਂਬੁਜਂ - hands like lotuses; ਸ਼੍ਰੋਣਿ-ਬਿਂਬ- - on the waist; ਚਲਤ੍-ਅਂਬਰਮ੍ - fluttering of clothing; ਭਜਤ ਰਾਸਕੇਲਿ- - meditate on the Raas Dance; ਰਸ-ਡਂਬਰਮ੍ - (with its) enthralling majesty;
Translation
The key notes of the flute set the tune giving the sweet song and the raagas a flow and rhythm. The soft beat of the feet of the dancers kept time with the very pleasant beats of the music. The clapping of the hands mingled with the tingling sound of the bangles. During the dance, time and again Thou placed Thy lotus hands on the shoulders of the Gopikaas. As they danced about, the clothings on their waists fluttered. On such enthralling majesty of the Raas Dance let us meditate.

ਸ੍ਪਰ੍ਧਯਾ ਵਿਰਚਿਤ- - (as if )in competition performing; ਅਨੁਗਾਨ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ- - the singing one after the other (and) producing; ਤਾਰ-ਤਾਰ- - very loud; ਮਧੁਰ-ਸ੍ਵਰੇ - beautiful strains; ਨਰ੍ਤਨੇ-ਅਥ - (and) while dancing, then; ਲਲਿਤ-ਅਂਗ-ਹਾਰ- - the beautiful limbs captivatingly (moving); ਲੁਲਿਤ-ਅਂਗ-ਹਾਰ- - displacing on the neck and body the necklaces; ਮਣਿ-ਭੂਸ਼ਣੇ - and begemmed ornaments; ਸਮ੍ਮਦੇਨ - with extreme joy; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਪੁਸ਼੍ਪ-ਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਮ੍- - doing flower showering; ਅਲਮ੍-ਉਨ੍ਮਿਸ਼ਤ੍- - not batting the eyes; ਦਿਵਿਸ਼ਦਾਂ ਕੁਲਂ - the gods in groups; ਚਿਨ੍ਮਯੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ - in the Pure Consciousness, i.e., in Thee; ਨਿਲੀਯਮਾਨਮ੍-ਇਵ - completely submerged as if; ਸਮ੍ਮੁਮੋਹ - and were entranced; ਸਵਧੂਕੁਲਮ੍ - along with their women-folk;
Translation
As though in competition, the singers raised their voices in successive strains as the musical notes reached higher in pitch. The beautiful limbs of the dancers moved delightfully displacing their necklaces and the begemmed ornaments on their body. The groups of gods watched with extreme joy and showered rains of flowers. Along with their women-folk they watched entranced completely submerged in the Pure Consciousness i.e. in Thee.

ਸ੍ਵਿਨ੍ਨ-ਸਨ੍ਨ- - sweating (and) tired; ਤਨੁ-ਵਲ੍ਲਰੀ - with a body like a creeper; ਤਦਨੁ ਕਾਪਿ ਨਾਮ - there after some(one) indeed; ਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਂਗਨਾ - Gopikaa; ਕਾਂਤਮ੍-ਅਂਸਮ੍- - on the beautiful shoulders (of Thee); ਅਵਲਂਬਤੇ ਸ੍ਮ - supported herself; ਤਵ ਤਾਂਤਿ-ਭਾਰ- - of Thee, (because of) the exhaustion weight; ਮੁਕੁਲ-ਈਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਾ - (making) half closed (her) eyes; ਕਾਚਿਤ੍- - another woman; ਆਚਲਿਤ-ਕੁਂਤਲਾ - with dishevelled hair; ਨਵ-ਪਟੀਰ-ਸਾਰ-ਘਨ-ਸੌਰਭਮ੍ - the fresh sandal paste's intense fragrance; ਵਂਚਨੇਨ ਤਵ - slyly ( to smell) on Thy (arm); ਸਂਚੁਚੁਂਬ ਭੁਜਮ੍- - kissed the arm; ਅਂਚਿਤ-ਉਰੁ- - sprouting big; ਪੁਲਕ-ਅਂਕੁਰਾ - ecstatic horripilation;
Translation
One Gopikaa, slender and delicate like a creeper, tired and sweating, with drooping eyes out of fatigue, supported herself on Thy beautiful shoulder. Another woman with dishevelled hair, to smell the fragrance of the fresh sandal paste on Thy arm, slyly kissed Thy arm, having horripilation over her body in the process.

ਕਾਪਿ ਗਂਡਭੁਵਿ - another one on the cheek area (of Thee); ਸਨ੍ਨਿਧਾਯ ਨਿਜ ਗਂਡਮ੍- - placing her own cheek; ਆਕੁਲਿਤ-ਕੁਂਡਲਮ੍- - (with) dangling earrings; ਪੁਣ੍ਯ-ਪੂਰ ਨਿਧਿਃ- - (she who was) of merits a full repository; ਅਨ੍ਵਵਾਪ - intook; ਤਵ-ਪੂਗ-ਚਰ੍ਵਿਤ- - Thy betel chewed; ਰਸ-ਅਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਮ੍ - juice nectar like; ਇਂਦਿਰਾ-ਵਿਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿ-ਮਂਦਿਰਮ੍ - Laxmi's sporting field; ਭੁਵਨ-ਸੁਂਦਰਮ੍ - the most beautiful in all the worlds; ਹਿ ਨਟਨ-ਅਂਤਰੇ - indeed during the dance; ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍-ਅਵਾਪ੍ਯ - Thee achieving; ਦਧੁਃ-ਅਂਗਨਾਃ - attained the Gopikaas; ਕਿਮੁ ਨ ਸਮ੍ਮਦ- - what not joyous; ਉਨ੍ਮਦ-ਦਸ਼ਾਂਤਰਮ੍ - intoxication states;
Translation
Another one, who was a repository of merits, placed her own cheek on Thy cheek, with earrings dangling on them. She enjoyed the thrill as she intook the nectar like juice from the betel chewed by Thee. The Gopikaas, during the dance, having achieved Laxmi's sport field, Thee, the most beautiful in all the worlds, what states of joyous intoxication did they not attain?

ਗਾਨਮ੍-ਈਸ਼ - the song O Lord; ਵਿਰਤਂ ਕ੍ਰਮੇਣ - stopped gradually; ਕਿਲ ਵਾਦ੍ਯ-ਮੇਲਨਮ੍- - indeed the musical instruments; ਉਪਾਰਤਂ - ceased; ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮ-ਸਮ੍ਮਦ- - (in) the Brahmic bliss; ਰਸ-ਆਕੁਲਾਃ - (and) joy deeply immersed; ਸਦਸਿ ਕੇਵਲਂ - in a circle only; ਨਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੁਃ-ਅਂਗਨਾਃ - kept dancing the women; ਨ-ਅਵਿਦਨ੍-ਅਪਿ ਚ - and not knowing also; ਨੀਵਿਕਾਂ ਕਿਮਪਿ - of the knot of the string (loosening) anything also; ਕੁਂਤਲੀਮ੍-ਅਪਿ - of the hair (dishevelled); ਚ ਕਂਚੁਲੀਮ੍ - and of the bodice; ਜ੍ਯੋਤਿਸ਼ਾਮ੍-ਅਪਿ - of the stars also; ਕਦਂਬਕਂ - in their courses; ਦਿਵਿ ਵਿਲਂਬਿਤਂ - in the sky stood still; ਕਿਮ੍-ਅਪਰਂ ਬ੍ਰੁਵੇ - what more than this should I say;
Translation
O Lord! The singing stopped gradually and the musical instruments also ceased. But immersed deeply in the joy of Brahmic Bliss the women kept dancing in a circle. They were not even aware of the knot of clothing strings loosening or of their bodice having slipped or of their hair being dishevelled. The stars in the sky stood still in their courses, to enjoy all this. What more can I say?

ਮੋਦਸੀਮ੍ਨਿ - in the highest bliss; ਭੁਵਨਂ ਵਿਲਾਪ੍ਯ - the world engulfing; ਵਿਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਂ ਸਮਾਪ੍ਯ ਚ - and the sport (dance) ending; ਤਤਃ ਵਿਭੋ - then O Lord!; ਕੇਲਿ-ਸਮ੍ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦਿਤ- - the sport pressing (exerting); ਨਿਰ੍ਮਲ-ਅਂਗ- - the clean limbs; ਨਵ-ਘਰ੍ਮ-ਲੇਸ਼- - fresh perspiration drops; ਸੁਭਗ-ਆਤ੍ਮਨਾਮ੍ - on the beautiful bodied women; ਮਨ੍ਮਥ-ਅਸਹਨ- - the Cupid's shafts not being able to bear; ਚੇਤਸਾਂ - (with) such minds; ਪਸ਼ੁਪ-ਯੋਸ਼ਿਤਾਂ - of the cowherd women; ਸੁਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਚੋਦਿਤਃ- - prompted by their meritorious deeds; ਤਾਵਤ੍-ਆਕਲਿਤ-ਮੂਰ੍ਤਿਃ- - then assuming forms; ਅਦਧਿਥ - (Thou) performed; ਮਾਰਵੀਰ-ਪਰਮ- - an amorously great; ਉਤ੍ਸਵਾਨ੍ - festivity;
Translation
The world was engulfed in the highest bliss as the Raas Dance ended. The pure bodies of these women glowed with fresh perspiration drops caused by the dance, and who were unable to bear the shafts of Cupid any longer. O Lord! Prompted by the meritorious deeds of the Gopikaas, Thou assumed as many forms as they were in number and performed an amorously great festivity.

ਸ੍ਵੈਰਮੀਸ਼ ਨਨੁ ਸੂਰਜਾਪਯਸਿ ਚਾਰੁਨਾਮ ਵਿਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਂ ਵ੍ਯਧਾਃ ।
ਕਾਨਨੇਪਿ ਚ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਸ਼ੀਤਲਕਿਸ਼ੋਰਮਾਰੁਤਮਨੋਹਰੇ
ਸੂਨਸੌਰਭਮਯੇ ਵਿਲੇਸਿਥ ਵਿਲਾਸਿਨੀਸ਼ਤਵਿਮੋਹਨਮ੍ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਕੇਲਿ-ਭੇਦ- - by sports varied; ਪਰਿਲੋਲਿਤਾਭਿਃ- - (who were) exhausted; ਅਤਿ-ਲਾਲਿਤਾਭਿਃ- - (and were) fondly caressed; ਅਬਲਾਲਿਭਿਃ - with those women; ਸ੍ਵੈਰਮ੍-ਈਸ਼ - at will O Lord!; ਨਨੁ ਸੂਰਜਾ-ਪਯਸਿ - indeed (Thou) in the Yamunaa waters; ਚਾਰੁ-ਨਾਮ੍ - beautifully indeed; ਵਿਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਂ ਵ੍ਯਧਾਃ - sports performed; ਕਾਨਨੇ-ਅਪਿ ਚ - (and) in the forests also and; ਵਿਸਾਰਿ-ਸ਼ੀਤਲ- - (where) spreading cool,; ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰ-ਮਾਰੁਤ- - gentle breeze; ਮਨੋਹਰੇ - (was) enchanting; ਸੂਨ-ਸੌਰਭਮਯੇ - (filled with) the flower fragrance; ਵਿਲੇਸਿਥ - (Thou) went around; ਵਿਲਾਸਿਨੀ-ਸ਼ਤ- - (with) the women in large numbers; ਵਿਮੋਹਨਮ੍ - dazing them;
Translation
O Lord! The women were exhausted by the varied sports and were fondly caressed. Thou performed sports with them at will in the waters of Yamunaa.Thou also went around in the forests where a cool gentle breeze was blowing filled with the fragrance of flowers, which dazed the large number of women with ecstatic joy.

ਕਾਮਿਨੀਰਿਤਿ ਹਿ ਯਾਮਿਨੀਸ਼ੁ ਖਲੁ ਕਾਮਨੀਯਕਨਿਧੇ ਭਵਾਨ੍
ਪੂਰ੍ਣਸਮ੍ਮਦਰਸਾਰ੍ਣਵਂ ਕਮਪਿ ਯੋਗਿਗਮ੍ਯਮਨੁਭਾਵਯਨ੍ ।
ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਸ਼ਂਕਰਮੁਖਾਨਪੀਹ ਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਂਗਨਾਸੁ ਬਹੁਮਾਨਯਨ੍
ਭਕ੍ਤਲੋਕਗਮਨੀਯਰੂਪ ਕਮਨੀਯ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਣ ਪਰਿਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍ ॥11॥
Meaning
ਕਾਮਿਨੀਃ-ਇਤਿ ਹਿ - the women in this manner; ਯਾਮਿਨੀਸ਼ੁ ਖਲੁ - in the nights indeed; ਕਾਮਨੀਯਕਨਿਧੇ - O repository of all virtues!; ਭਵਾਨ੍ - Thou; ਪੂਰ੍ਣ-ਸਮ੍ਮਦ- - the immense bliss; ਰਸ-ਅਰ੍ਣਵਂ - nectar ocean; ਕਮਪਿ - who so ever; ਯੋਗਿ-ਗਮ੍ਯਮ੍- - yogi (may) attain; ਅਨੁਭਾਵਯਨ੍ - making (them, the women) experience; ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮ-ਸ਼ਂਕਰ-ਮੁਖਾਨ੍- - in Brahmaa Shiva and other gods; ਅਪਿ-ਇਹ੍ - even, here; ਪਸ਼ੁਪ-ਅਂਗਨਾਸੁ - in (these) Gopikaas; ਬਹੁਮਾਨਯਨ੍ - placing respect; ਭਕ੍ਤ-ਲੋਕ- - to the devout people; ਗਮਨੀਯ-ਰੂਪ - attainable, of such nature; ਕਮਨੀਯ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਣ - O Attractive One! O Krishna!; ਪਰਿਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍ - protect me;
Translation
O Repository of all virtues! In this manner, Thou made the women experience the immense bliss of the nectar ocean in the nights. Such an experience only yogis may attain. This created in Brahma Shiva and other gods a feeling of respect for the Gopikaas. O Thou attainable to the devout people, of such a nature, O Attractive One! O Krishna! protect me.
