ਪ੍ਰਿਯਵ੍ਰਤਸ੍ਯ ਪ੍ਰਿਯਪੁਤ੍ਰਭੂਤਾ-
ਦਾਗ੍ਨੀਧ੍ਰਰਾਜਾਦੁਦਿਤੋ ਹਿ ਨਾਭਿਃ ।
ਤ੍ਵਾਂ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਵਾਨਿਸ਼੍ਟਦਮਿਸ਼੍ਟਿਮਧ੍ਯੇ
ਤਵੈਵ ਤੁਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਯੈ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਯਜ੍ਞਕਰ੍ਮਾ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਿਯਵ੍ਰਤਸ੍ਯ - of Priyavrata; ਪ੍ਰਿਯਪੁਤ੍ਰਭੂਤਾਤ੍-ਆਗ੍ਨੀਧ੍ਰ-ਰਾਜਾਤ੍- - from the dear son king Aagnidhra; ਉਦਿਤਃ ਹਿ ਨਾਭਿਃ - was born Naabhi, indeed,; ਤ੍ਵਾਂ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਵਾਨ੍-ਇਸ਼੍ਟਦਮ੍- - (he) saw Thee the fulfiller of desire; ਇਸ਼੍ਟਿ-ਮਧ੍ਯੇ - during the Yanjya; ਤਵ-ਏਵ ਤੁਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਯੈ - for propitiating Thee alone; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਯਜ੍ਞ-ਕਰ੍ਮਾ - (who) had performed a Yanjya;
Translation
King Priyavrata had a dear son named Asgnidhra king, of whom Naabhi was born. While Naabhi was performing a Yanjya, for propitiating Thee, he had a vision of Thee, the bestower of desired boons to devotees.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਭਿਸ਼੍ਟੁਤਸ੍ਤਤ੍ਰ ਮੁਨੀਸ਼੍ਵਰੈਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਂ
ਰਾਜ੍ਞਃ ਸ੍ਵਤੁਲ੍ਯਂ ਸੁਤਮਰ੍ਥ੍ਯਮਾਨਃ ।
ਸ੍ਵਯਂ ਜਨਿਸ਼੍ਯੇਹਮਿਤਿ ਬ੍ਰੁਵਾਣ-
ਸ੍ਤਿਰੋਦਧਾ ਬਰ੍ਹਿਸ਼ਿ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਮੂਰ੍ਤੇ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਅਭਿਸ਼੍ਟੁਤਃ-ਤਤ੍ਰ - being praised there (in the yanjya); ਮੁਨੀਸ਼੍ਵਰੈਃ-ਤ੍ਵਂ - by the great sages Thou; ਰਾਜ੍ਞਃ ਸ੍ਵਤੁਲ੍ਯਂ ਸੁਤਮ੍- - for the king a son like Thee; ਅਰ੍ਥ੍ਯਮਾਨਃ - being prayed for; ਸ੍ਵਯਂ ਜਨਿਸ਼੍ਯੇ-ਅਹਮ੍- - I shall Myself be born; ਇਤਿ ਬ੍ਰੁਵਾਣਃ- - saying thus; ਤਿਰੋਦਧਾ ਬਰ੍ਹਿਸ਼ਿ - (Thou) disappeared in the sacrificial fire; ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਮੂਰ੍ਤੇ - O Lord! With the cosmos as Thy form;
Translation
O Lord of the whole universe! The sages sang Thy praises and the king prayed to Thee for a son like Thyself. Thou then declared that Thou would Thyself be born as his son and then Thou disappeared in the sacrificial fire.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨਾਭਿਪ੍ਰਿਯਾਯਾਮਥ ਮੇਰੁਦੇਵ੍ਯਾਂ
ਤ੍ਵਮਂਸ਼ਤੋਭੂਃ ਰੁਰੁਈਸ਼ਭਾਭਿਧਾਨਃ ।
ਅਲੋਕਸਾਮਾਨ੍ਯਗੁਣਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ-
ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤਾਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਜਨਪ੍ਰਮੋਦਃ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਨਾਭਿ-ਪ੍ਰਿਯਾਯਾਮ੍-ਅਥ - to Naabhi's dear wife, then; ਮੇਰੁਦੇਵ੍ਯਾਂ - named Merudevi; ਤ੍ਵਮ੍-ਅਂਸ਼ਤਃ-ਅਭੂਃ - Thou as a part incarnation were born; ਰੁਰੁਈਸ਼ਭ-ਅਭਿਧਾਨਃ - with the name Rishabha; ਅਲੋਕ-ਸਾਮਾਨ੍ਯ-ਗੁਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ - endowed with sublime and rare virtues; ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ-ਅਸ਼ੇਸ਼-ਜਨ-ਪ੍ਰਮੋਦਃ - causing to countless people great delight (with Thy glory);
Translation
Then Thou were born as a part incarnation with the name Rishabha to Merudevi the wife of Naabhi. Thou delighted everyone with sublime virtues and glory not commonly seen in the world.

ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਕੀਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿ ਰਾਜ੍ਯਭਾਰਂ

ਗਤਃ ਕਿਲਾਨਂਦਪਦਂ ਪਦਂ ਤੇ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਕੀਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿ - On Thee, the ruler of the three worlds; ਰਾਜ੍ਯ-ਭਾਰਂ ਨਿਧਾਯ - transferring the responsibility of governance; ਨਾਭਿਃ ਸਹ ਮੇਰੁਦੇਵ੍ਯਾ - Naabhi along with Merudevi; ਤਪੋਵਨਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪ੍ਯ - reaching the forest; ਭਵਤ੍-ਨਿਸ਼ੇਵੀ - and worshipping Thee; ਗਤਃ ਕਿਲ-ਆਨਂਦਪਦਂ - indeed attained the state of bliss; ਪਦਂ ਤੇ - abode of Thine;
Translation
Naabhi entrusted the administration of the kingdom to Thee, who are the ruler of the three worlds and went away to the forest with his wife Merudevi to lead an ascetic life. Worshipping Thee there, he attained to Thy state of Supreme Bliss.

ਯਦਾ ਤਦਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਨਿਜਯੋਗਸ਼ਕ੍ਤ੍ਯਾ
ਸ੍ਵਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਮੇਨਦ੍ਵ੍ਯਦਧਾਃ ਸੁਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਮ੍ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਇਂਦ੍ਰਃ-ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਉਤ੍ਕਰ੍ਸ਼ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਤ੍- - Indra by Thy achievements; ਅਮਰ੍ਸ਼ਾਤ੍ - out of jealousy; ਵਵਰ੍ਸ਼ ਨ-ਅਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍- - did not shower rain on this; ਅਜਨਾਭਵਰ੍ਸ਼ੇ - (land) Ajanaabh-varsha; ਯਦਾ ਤਦਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ - when (this happened) then Thou; ਨਿਜ-ਯੋਗ-ਸ਼ਕ੍ਤ੍ਯਾ - by Thy yogic power; ਸ੍ਵ-ਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਮ੍-ਏਨਤ੍- - on Thy own kingdom brought; ਵ੍ਯਦਧਾਃ ਸੁਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਮ੍ - abundant rainfall;
Translation
Owing to jealousy at the prosperity of the world generated by Thy (Rishabha's) greatness, Indra withheld rain from the continent Ajanaabha. Thereupon Thou by Thy yogic power brought enough rain on this Thy continent.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਜਿਤੇਂਦ੍ਰਦਤ੍ਤਾਂ ਕਮਨੀਂ ਜਯਂਤੀ-
ਮਥੋਦ੍ਵਹਨ੍ਨਾਤ੍ਮਰਤਾਸ਼ਯੋਪਿ ।
ਅਜੀਜਨਸ੍ਤਤ੍ਰ ਸ਼ਤਂ ਤਨੂਜਾ-
ਨੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤੀਸ਼ੋ ਭਰਤੋਗ੍ਰਜਨ੍ਮਾ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਜਿਤੇਂਦ੍ਰ-ਦਤ੍ਤਾਂ - given by Indra; ਕਮਨੀਂ ਜਯਂਤੀਮ੍- - beautiful Jayanti; ਅਥ-ਉਦ੍ਵਹਨ੍- - then marrying; ਆਤ੍ਮਰਤ-ਆਸ਼ਯਃ-ਅਪਿ - even though ever absorbed in Brahman; ਅਜੀਜਨਃ-ਤਤ੍ਰ ਸ਼ਤਂ ਤਨੂਜਾਨ੍- - (he) begot hundred sons; ਏਸ਼ਾਂ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤੀਸ਼ਃ ਭਰਤਃ- - among them, king Bharat; ਅਗ੍ਰ-ਜਨ੍ਮਾ - was the eldest;
Translation
Thus defeated, Indra bestowed beautiful Jayanti on Thee as Thy wife. Though Thou were ever absorbed in the Aatman, Thou begot in her one hundred sons, the eldest of whom was king Bharat.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨਵਾਭਵਨ੍ ਯੋਗਿਵਰਾ ਨਵਾਨ੍ਯੇ
ਤ੍ਵਪਾਲਯਨ੍ ਭਾਰਤਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਖਂਡਾਨ੍ ।
ਸੈਕਾ ਤ੍ਵਸ਼ੀਤਿਸ੍ਤਵ ਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਪੁਤ੍ਰ-
ਸ੍ਤਪੋਬਲਾਤ੍ ਭੂਸੁਰਭੂਯਮੀਯੁਃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ਨਵ-ਅਭਵਨ੍ ਯੋਗਿਵਰਾਃ - nine of them became great yogis; ਨਵ-ਅਨ੍ਯੇ-ਤੁ- - another nine indeed; ਅਪਾਲਯਨ੍ ਭਾਰਤਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਖਂਡਾਨ੍ - ruled over the various regions of Bharatavarsha; ਸੈਕਾ ਤੁ-ਅਸ਼ੀਤਿਃ- - one and eighty however; ਤਵ ਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਃ- - Thy remaining sons; ਤਪੋਬਲਾਤ੍ - by the power of their austerities; ਭੂਸੁਰਭੂਯਮ੍-ਈਯੁਃ - attained Braahminhood;
Translation
Nine of them became great yogis, and another nine ruled over the various regions of Bhaaaratavarsha. Thy remaining eighty-one sons attained Braahminhood by the power of their austerities.

ਉਕ੍ਤ੍ਵਾ ਸੁਤੇਭ੍ਯੋਥ ਮੁਨੀਂਦ੍ਰਮਧ੍ਯੇ
ਵਿਰਕ੍ਤਿਭਕ੍ਤ੍ਯਨ੍ਵਿਤਮੁਕ੍ਤਿਮਾਰ੍ਗਮ੍ ।
ਸ੍ਵਯਂ ਗਤਃ ਪਾਰਮਹਂਸ੍ਯਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਤਿ-
ਮਧਾ ਜਡੋਨ੍ਮਤ੍ਤਪਿਸ਼ਾਚਚਰ੍ਯਾਮ੍ ॥8॥
Meaning
ਉਕ੍ਤ੍ਵਾ ਸੁਤੇਭ੍ਯਃ-ਅਥ - instructing the sons then; ਮੁਨੀਂਦ੍ਰ-ਮਧ੍ਯੇ - in the midst of great sages; ਵਿਰਕ੍ਤਿ-ਭਕ੍ਤਿ-ਅਨ੍ਵਿਤ- - comprising of renunciation and devotion; ਮੁਕ੍ਤਿ-ਮਾਰ੍ਗਮ੍ - the path of liberation; ਸ੍ਵਯਂ ਗਤਃ - Thyself went (took to); ਪਾਰਮਹਂਸ੍ਯਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਤਿਮ੍- - the way of the life of Paramahansas; ਅਧਾਃ - adopting; ਜਡ-ਉਨ੍ਮਤ੍ਤ-ਪਿਸ਼ਾਚ-ਚਰ੍ਯਾਮ੍ - the behaviour of idiots lunatics and ghosts;
Translation
Afterwards Thou instructed Thy sons along with the great ascetics in the path of salvation through renunciation and devotion. Then adopting the life of a total renunciate Thou moved about behaving like an idiot, a mad man or a ghost.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਪਰਾਤ੍ਮਭੂਤੋਪਿ ਪਰੋਪਦੇਸ਼ਂ
ਕੁਰ੍ਵਨ੍ ਭਵਾਨ੍ ਸਰ੍ਵਨਿਰਸ੍ਯਮਾਨਃ ।
ਵਿਕਾਰਹੀਨੋ ਵਿਚਚਾਰ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸ੍ਨਾਂ
ਮਹੀਮਹੀਨਾਤ੍ਮਰਸਾਭਿਲੀਨਃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਪਰਾਤ੍ਮਭੂਤਃ-ਅਪਿ - though one with the Supreme Aatman; ਪਰ-ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਂ ਕੁਰ੍ਵਨ੍ - giving instructions to others; ਭਵਾਨ੍ ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਨਿਰਸ੍ਯ-ਮਾਨਃ - Thou being insulted by others; ਵਿਕਾਰ-ਹੀਨਃ - free from attachment (or aversion); ਵਿਚਚਾਰ - wondered; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸ੍ਨਾਂ ਮਹੀਮ੍- - all over the earth; ਅਹੀਨ-ਆਤ੍ਮਰਸ-ਅਭਿਲੀਨਃ - completely absorbed in the bliss of the Supreme Self;
Translation
Though Thou had attained complete identity with the Brahman, Thou continued to impart knowledge to others. Thou were free from attachment and aversion, though Thou were treated with indifference.Thou wandered all over the earth completely absorbed in the bliss of the Supreme self.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸ਼ਯੁਵ੍ਰਤਂ ਗੋਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਗਕਾਕਚਰ੍ਯਾਂ
ਚਿਰਂ ਚਰਨ੍ਨਾਪ੍ਯ ਪਰਂ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪਮ੍ ।
ਦਵਾਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਂਗਃ ਕੁਟਕਾਚਲੇ ਤ੍ਵਂ
ਤਾਪਾਨ੍ ਮਮਾਪਾਕੁਰੁ ਵਾਤਨਾਥ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਸ਼ਯੁ-ਵ੍ਰਤਮ੍ - the way of the life of the python; ਗੋ-ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਗ-ਕਾਕ-ਚਰ੍ਯਾਮ੍ - and the ways of the cow, dear and crow; ਚਿਰਂ ਚਰਨ੍- - practising for a long time; ਆਪ੍ਯ ਪਰਂ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪਂ - attaining oneness with the Supreme Brahman; ਦਵਾ-ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਅਂਗਃ - with body perishing in the forest fire; ਕੁਟਕਾਚਲੇ ਤ੍ਵਂ - in the Coorg mountains, Thou; ਤਾਪਾਨ੍ ਮਮ-ਅਪਾਕੁਰੁ - ailments of mine do destroy; ਵਾਤਨਾਥ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Observing the ways of the life of a python, a cow, a deer, and a crow, Thou wandered about for long, attaining identity with the Supreme Brahman. Thy body then perished in the forest fire in the Coorg mountains. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Deign to eradicate my afflictions.
