ਵਿਸ਼ਮਾਰੁਤਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਿਤਪਰ੍ਣਚਯਮ੍ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਅਥ ਵਾਰਿਣਿ - then in the water; ਘੋਰਤਰਂ ਫਣਿਨਂ - very fierce that serpent; ਪ੍ਰਤਿਵਾਰਯਿਤੁਂ - to drive away; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਧੀਃ - having decided; ਭਗਵਨ੍ - O Lord; ਦ੍ਰੁਤਮ੍-ਆਰਿਥ - quickly (Thou) approached; ਤੀਰਗ-ਨੀਪ-ਤਰੁਂ - the bank situated Kadamba tree; ਵਿਸ਼-ਮਾਰੁਤ-ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਿਤ- - the poisoned breeze had dried up; ਪਰ੍ਣ-ਚਯਮ੍ - the cluster of leaves;
Translation
O Lord! Thou then made up Thy mind to drive away the fierce serpent from the waters. Thou quickly approached and got up on a Kadamba tree standing on the bank of the river, with its leaves withered due to the poisonous breeze.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਧਿਰੁਹ੍ਯ ਪਦਾਂਬੁਰੁਹੇਣ ਚ ਤਂ
ਨਵਪਲ੍ਲਵਤੁਲ੍ਯਮਨੋਜ੍ਞਰੁਚਾ ।
ਹ੍ਰਦਵਾਰਿਣਿ ਦੂਰਤਰਂ ਨ੍ਯਪਤਃ
ਪਰਿਘੂਰ੍ਣਿਤਘੋਰਤਰਂਗ੍ਗਣੇ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਅਧਿਰੁਹ੍ਯ - climbing with; ਪਦ-ਅਂਬੁ-ਰੁਹੇਣ - feet tender lotus like; ਚ ਤਂ - and that (tree); ਨਵ-ਪਲ੍ਲਵ-ਤੁਲ੍ਯ- - like tender new leaves; ਮਨੋਜ੍ਞ-ਰੁਚਾ - charming and splendorous; ਹ੍ਰਦ-ਵਾਰਿਣਿ - into the deep water; ਦੂਰਤਰਂ ਨ੍ਯਪਤਃ - far out (Thou) jumped; ਪਰਿਘੂਰ੍ਣਿਤ- - with swirling; ਘੋਰ-ਤਰਂਗ-ਗਣੇ - fierce waves of water;
Translation
Thou climbed that tree with Thy lotus like splendorous charming feet resembling tender leaves, and with a long leap jumped far out into the deep waters with swirling fierce waves.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਭੁਵਨਤ੍ਰਯਭਾਰਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੋ ਭਵਤੋ
ਗੁਰੁਭਾਰਵਿਕਂਪਿਵਿਜ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਭਿਜਲਾ ।
ਪਰਿਮਜ੍ਜਯਤਿ ਸ੍ਮ ਧਨੁਸ਼੍ਸ਼ਤਕਂ
ਤਟਿਨੀ ਝਟਿਤਿ ਸ੍ਫੁਟਘੋਸ਼ਵਤੀ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਭੁਵਨ-ਤ੍ਰਯ-ਭਾਰ-ਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਃ - of the three worlds the weight bearing; ਭਵਤਃ ਗੁਰੁ-ਭਾਰ- - of Thee the immense weight (causing); ਵਿਕਂਪਿ-ਵਿਜ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਭਿ-ਜਲਾ - swirling and swelling with its waters; ਪਰਿਮਜ੍ਜਯਤਿ ਸ੍ਮ - started to submerge; ਧਨੁਃ-ਸ਼ਤਕਂ - the area of a hundred bows (in measurement); ਤਟਿਨੀ ਝਟਿਤਿ - on the river bed, and suddenly; ਸ੍ਫੁਟ-ਘੋਸ਼ਵਤੀ - (the river) made an intense roar;
Translation
When, Thou the bearer of the weight of the three worlds, jumped, Thy immense weight caused the waters to swirl and swell. On the river bed an area of a hundred bows (yards) submerged, as a sudden roar arose from the river.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਥ ਦਿਕ੍ਸ਼ੁ ਵਿਦਿਕ੍ਸ਼ੁ ਪਰਿਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਭਿਤ-
ਭ੍ਰਮਿਤੋਦਰਵਾਰਿਨਿਨਾਦਭਰੈਃ ।
ਉਦਕਾਦੁਦਗਾਦੁਰਗਾਧਿਪਤਿ-
ਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਦੁਪਾਂਤਮਸ਼ਾਂਤਰੁਸ਼ਾਂਧਮਨਾਃ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਅਥ ਦਿਕ੍ਸ਼ੁ ਵਿਦਿਕ੍ਸ਼ੁ - then, in all the directions and the intermediary directions; ਪਰਿਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਭਿਤ-ਭ੍ਰਮਿਤ- - turbulent swirling; ਉਦਰ-ਵਾਰਿ-ਨਿਨਾਦ-ਭਰੈਃ - from the middle of the waters roaring aloud; ਉਦਕਾਤ੍-ਉਦਗਾਤ੍- - from (that) water came out; ਉਰਗਾਧਿਪਤਿਃ- - the king of serpents; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਉਪਾਂਤਮ੍- - near Thee; ਅਸ਼ਾਂਤ-ਰੁਸ਼ਾ- - disturbed and angered; ਅਂਧਮਨਾਃ - and so blinded (with rage);
Translation
The loud roar from the middle of the waters which extended to all the directions and the intermediary directions, disturbed and angered the serpent king Kaaliya. He came out of the water and rushed up to Thee in a fit of blinded anger.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਫਣਸ਼੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਗਸਹਸ੍ਰਵਿਨਿਸ੍ਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਮਰ-
ਜ੍ਵਲਦਗ੍ਨਿਕਣੋਗ੍ਰਵਿਸ਼ਾਂਬੁਧਰਮ੍ ।
ਪੁਰਤਃ ਫਣਿਨਂ ਸਮਲੋਕਯਥਾ
ਬਹੁਸ਼੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਗਿਣਮਂਜਨਸ਼ੈਲਮਿਵ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਫਣ-ਸ਼੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਗ- - (with) hoods , peak (like); ਸਹਸ੍ਰ-ਵਿਨਿਃਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਮਰ- - thousands of them emitting; ਜ੍ਵਲਤ੍-ਅਗ੍ਨਿ-ਕਣ- - burning like fire flakes; ਉਗ੍ਰ-ਵਿਸ਼-ਅਂਬੁਧਰਮ੍ - fierce poison fluid bearing; ਪੁਰਤਃ ਫਣਿਨਂ - in front the serpent; ਸਮਲੋਕਯਥਾਃ - (Thou) saw; ਬਹੁ-ਸ਼੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਗਿ-ਗਣਮ੍- - many peaked; ਅਂਜਨ-ਸ਼ੈਲਮ੍-ਇਵ - black mountain, as if;
Translation
Thou saw the serpent in front with his thousands of peak like hoods emitting burning fire flakes and fierce poison fluid, looking like a many peaked black mountain.

ਜ੍ਵਲਦਕ੍ਸ਼ਿ ਪਰਿਕ੍ਸ਼ਰਦੁਗ੍ਰਵਿਸ਼-

ਸਮਵੇਸ਼੍ਟਯਦਸ੍ਫੁਟਚੇਸ਼੍ਟਮਹੋ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਜ੍ਵਲਤ੍-ਅਕ੍ਸ਼ਿ - with flaming eyes; ਪਰਿਕ੍ਸ਼ਰਤ੍-ਉਗ੍ਰ-ਵਿਸ਼- - emitting deadly poison; ਸ਼੍ਵਸਨ੍-ਊਸ਼੍ਮਭਰਃ - breathing out intense heat; ਸ ਮਹਾਭੁਜਗਃ - that huge serpent; ਪਰਿਦਸ਼੍ਯ - biting; ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਅਨਂਤਬਲਂ - Thee of limitless strength; ਸਮਵੇਸ਼੍ਟਯਤ੍- - coiled (around Thee); ਅਸ੍ਫੁਟ-ਚੇਸ਼੍ਟਮ੍- - making invisible Thy movements; ਅਹੋ - Alas;
Translation
Alas! That huge serpent emitting deadly poison and breathing out intense heat, bit Thee of limitless strength, all over Thy body. Then it coiled around Thee making Thy body and Thy movements invisible.

ਅਵਿਲੋਕ੍ਯ ਭਵਂਤਮਥਾਕੁਲਿਤੇ
ਤਟਗਾਮਿਨਿ ਬਾਲਕਧੇਨੁਗਣੇ ।
ਵ੍ਰਜਗੇਹਤਲੇਪ੍ਯਨਿਮਿਤ੍ਤਸ਼ਤਂ
ਸਮੁਦੀਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ ਗਤਾ ਯਮੁਨਾਂ ਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ਅਵਿਲੋਕ੍ਯ ਭਵਂਤਮ੍- - not seeing Thee; ਅਥ-ਆਕੁਲਿਤੇ - then distressed; ਤਟ-ਗਾਮਿਨਿ - (who) to the bank (of river Yamunaa) had come; ਬਾਲਕ-ਧੇਨੁ-ਗਣੇ - the children and the cows all; ਵ੍ਰਜ-ਗੇਹ-ਤਲੇ-ਅਪਿ- - in Gokula houses also; ਅਨਿਮਿਤ੍ਤ-ਸ਼ਤਂ - evil omens innumerable; ਸਮੁਦੀਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ ਗਤਾ - seeing went; ਯਮੁਨਾਂ ਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਃ - towards Yamunaa the Gopas;
Translation
The Gopa boys and the cows were distressed when they did not see Thee, and went to the bank of the river Yamunaa. In the houses in Gokula also the Gopas saw hundreds of evil omens and they also rushed towards Yamunaa.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਖਿਲੇਸ਼ੁ ਵਿਭੋ ਭਵਦੀਯ ਦਸ਼ਾ-
ਮਵਲੋਕ੍ਯ ਜਿਹਾਸੁਸ਼ੁ ਜੀਵਭਰਮ੍ ।
ਫਣਿਬਂਧਨਮਾਸ਼ੁ ਵਿਮੁਚ੍ਯ ਜਵਾ-
ਦੁਦਗਮ੍ਯਤ ਹਾਸਜੁਸ਼ਾ ਭਵਤਾ ॥8॥
Meaning
ਅਖਿਲੇਸ਼ੁ - (as) all of them; ਵਿਭੋ - O Lord; ਭਵਦੀਯ-ਦਸ਼ਾਮ੍ - Thy plight; ਅਵਲੋਕ੍ਯ - seeing; ਜਿਹਾਸੁਸ਼ੁ - ready to give up their; ਜੀਵਭਰਮ੍ - lives; ਫਣਿ-ਬਂਧਨਮ੍- - the coils of the snake; ਆਸ਼ੁ ਵਿਮੁਚ੍ਯ - quickly shedding; ਜਵਾਤ੍-ਉਦਗਮ੍ਯਤ - hastily emerged; ਹਾਸਜੁਸ਼ਾ ਭਵਤਾ - with a smile, Thou;
Translation
O Lord! All of them were overwhelmed with grief on seeing Thy plight and were ready to give up their lives in order to save Thee. Just then, Thou quickly shed the coils of the snake and hastily emerged with a smile.

ਤ੍ਕਰਕਂਕਣਸਂਕੁਲਸਂਕ੍ਵਣਿਤਮ੍ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਅਧਿਰੁਹ੍ਯ ਤਤਃ - climbing upon then; ਫਣਿ-ਰਾਜ-ਫਣਾਨ੍ - the serpent king,s hoods; ਨਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇ ਭਵਤਾ - dance was performed by Thee; ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦੁ-ਪਾਦ-ਰੁਚਾ - with delicate feet beautiful; ਕਲਸ਼ਿਂਜਿਤ-ਨੂਪੁਰ- - the gentle sound of the anklets; ਮਂਜੁ-ਮਿਲਤ੍- - beautifully mingling with; ਕਰ-ਕਂਕਣ-ਸਂਕੁਲ- - the bangles on the wrists'; ਸਂਕ੍ਵਣਿਤਮ੍ - tinkling;
Translation
Then Thou mounted on the hoods of the serpent king and danced with Thy delicate beautiful feet. The gentle sound of the anklets mingled beautifully and rhythmically with the tinkling of the bangles on Thy wrists.

ਪਰਿਪਾਹਿ ਸ ਮਾਂ ਤ੍ਵਮਦਾਂਤਗਦਾਤ੍ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਜਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ੁਃ ਪਸ਼ੁਪਾਃ- - rejoiced the Gopas; ਤੁਤੁਸ਼ੁਃ-ਮੁਨਯਃ - sang hymns the sages; ਵਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ੁਃ ਕੁਸੁਮਾਨਿ - showered flowers; ਸੁਰੇਂਦ੍ਰ-ਗਣਾਃ - the gods' groups; ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਯਤਿ - when Thou danced; ਮਾਰੁਤਗੇਹਪਤੇ - O Lord of Guruvaayur; ਪਰਿਪਾਹਿ - save; ਸ - That (Thou); ਮਾਂ - me; ਤ੍ਵਮ੍- - Thou; ਅਦਾਂਤ-ਗਦਾਤ੍ - (from) severe illness;
Translation
As Thou performed the dance, the Gopas rejoiced, the sages sang hymns, and the gods showered flowers. O Lord of the Guruvaayur temple! Such that Thou are, save me from the severe illness.
