શ્લોકઃ
દદૃશિરે કિલ તત્ક્ષણમક્ષત-
સ્તનિતજૃંભિતકંપિતદિક્તટાઃ ।
સુષમયા ભવદંગતુલાં ગતા
વ્રજપદોપરિ વારિધરાસ્ત્વયા ॥1॥
Meaning
દદૃશિરે કિલ - were seen indeed; તત્-ક્ષણમ્- - (at) that moment; અક્ષત-સ્તનિત- - continuously roaring; જૃંભિત-કંપિત- - (and) spreading (and) causing to tremble; દિક્-તટાઃ - the quarters to their ends; સુષમયા - in their brilliance; ભવત્-અંગ-તુલાં - Thy form in resemblance; ગતાઃ - attaining; વ્રજપદ-ઉપરિ - above the land of Vraja; વારિધરાઃ-ત્વયા - rain clouds by Thee (were seen);
Translation
At that moment, indeed, above the land of Vraja, were seen by Thee massive rain clouds continuously roaring and spreading. They caused all the quarters to tremble and they resembled Thy form in their brilliance.
શ્લોકઃ
વિપુલકરકમિશ્રૈસ્તોયધારાનિપાતૈ-
ર્દિશિદિશિ પશુપાનાં મંડલે દંડ્યમાને ।
કુપિતહરિકૃતાન્નઃ પાહિ પાહીતિ તેષાં
વચનમજિત શ્રૃણ્વન્ મા બિભીતેત્યભાણીઃ ॥2॥
Meaning
વિપુલ-કરક્-મિશ્રૈઃ- - huge hail stones accompanied by; તોય-ધારા-નિપાતૈઃ- - torrential rain fall; દિશિ-દિશિ - in all directions; પશુપાનાં મંડલે - (when) the cowherds' groups; દંડ્માને - were being tormented; કુપિત- - (from) angered; હરિ-કૃતાત્- - Indra's actions; નઃ પાહિ પાહિ- - save, save us; ઇતિ તેષાં વચનમ્- - thus their words; અજિત શ્રૃણવન્ - O Invincible One! Hearing; મા વિભીત- - do not be afraid; ઇતિ-અભાણીઃ - thus (Thou) said;
Translation
There was torrential rain in all directions accompanied by huge enormous hail stones. The group of cowherds were tormented by the wrathful action of Indra. They all cried and prayed to be protected. O Invincible One! Hearing their laments , Thou asked them not to fear.
શ્લોકઃ
કુલ ઇહ ખલુ ગોત્રો દૈવતં ગોત્રશત્રો-
ર્વિહતિમિહ સ રુંધ્યાત્ કો નુ વઃ સંશયોઽસ્મિન્ ।
ઇતિ સહસિતવાદી દેવ ગોવર્દ્ધનાદ્રિં
ત્વરિતમુદમુમૂલો મૂલતો બાલદોર્ભ્યામ્ ॥3॥
Meaning
કુલ ઇહ - (for) the clan here; ખલુ ગોત્રઃ દૈવતં - indeed the mountain is the deity; ગોત્ર-શત્રોઃ- - the mountain enemy's; વિહિતમ્-ઇહ્ - attack here; સ રુંધ્યાત્ - he will resist; કઃ નુ વઃ સંશયઃ- - what indeed is your doubt; અસ્મિન્ ઇતિ - in this, thus; સહસિત-વાદી - with a smile saying; દેવ - O Lord!; ગોવર્દ્ધન-અદ્રિમ્ - the Govardhana mountain; ત્વરિતમ્- - quickly; ઉદમુમૂલઃ મૂલતઃ - uprooted from the roots; બાલ-દોર્ભ્યામ્ - with (Thy) two tender hands;
Translation
Here, for our clan, the mountain is the deity. Indra is the enemy of mountains. This mountain, Govardhan, will resist Indra's attack. Indeed what is your doubt in this?' Thou said so with a smile. O Lord! Assuring them, Thou quickly uprooted the Govardhana mountain with Thy two tender arms.

તદનુ ગિરિવરસ્ય પ્રોદ્ધૃતસ્યાસ્ય તાવત્
સિકતિલમૃદુદેશે દૂરતો વારિતાપે ।
પરિકરપરિમિશ્રાન્ ધેનુગોપાનધસ્તા-
દુપનિદધદધત્થા હસ્તપદ્મેન શૈલમ્ ॥4॥
Meaning
તદનુ ગિરિવરસ્ય - thereafter of (this) mountain; પ્રોદ્ધૃતસ્ય- - (which) was lifted up; અસ્ય તાવત્ - this then; સિકતિલ-મૃદુ-દેશે - on the soft sand bed; દૂરતઃ વારિત-આપે - which till far away was protected from water; પરિકર-પરિમિશ્રાન્ - household articles, along with; ધેનુ-ગોપાન્- - cows and cowherds; અધસ્તાત્- - underneath; ઉપનિદધત્- - keeping; અધત્થાઃ - (Thou) held aloft; હસ્ત-પદ્મેન - with one lotus like arm; શૈલમ્ - the mountain;
Translation
Then Thou held aloft the lifted up mountain with Thy lotus like arm. The soft sand bed of the mountain was well protected from the rain water. The cows and cowherds all gathered under the uplifted mountain along with their belongings and were also well protected.
શ્લોકઃ
ભવતિ વિધૃતશૈલે બાલિકાભિર્વયસ્યૈ-
રપિ વિહિતવિલાસં કેલિલાપાદિલોલે ।
સવિધમિલિતધેનૂરેકહસ્તેન કંડૂ-
યતિ સતિ પશુપાલાસ્તોષમૈષંત સર્વે ॥5॥
Meaning
ભવતિ - (when) Thou; વિધૃત-શૈલે - were holding the mountain; બાલિકાભિઃ - with the girls and; વયસ્યૈઃ-અપિ - with the boys of Thy age group also; વિહિત-વિલાસં - with enthusiasm; કેલિ-લાપ-આદિ-લોલે - in playful conversation etc engaging; સવિધ-મિલિત-ધેનૂઃ- - near Thee gathered cows; એક-હસ્તેન - with one hand; કંડૂયતિ સતિ - caressing; પશુપાલાઃ- - the cowherds; તોષમ્-ઐષંત - satisfaction achieved; સર્વે - all of them;
Translation
As Thou were holding the mountain, Thou enthusiastically engaged the girls and boys of Thy age group in playful conversation. The cows gathered around Thee and Thou caressed them with one hand. The cowherds were all very satisfied and delighted.
શ્લોકઃ
અતિમહાન્ ગિરિરેષ તુ વામકે
કરસરોરુહિ તં ધરતે ચિરમ્ ।
કિમિદમદ્ભુતમદ્રિબલં ન્વિતિ
ત્વદવલોકિભિરાકથિ ગોપકૈઃ ॥6॥
Meaning
અતિમહાન્ - very big; ગિરિઃ-એષ - mountain this (is); તુ વામકે - however in the left; કર-સરોરુહિ - hand, lotus like; તં ધરતે ચિરમ્ - this (mountain) (he) is holding for long; કિમ્-ઇદમ્- - what this; અદ્ભુતમ્- - wonder; અદ્રિ-બલં - (or) mountain's power; નુ-ઇતિ - indeed (is it) thus; ત્વત્-અવલોકિભિઃ- - by Thy onlookers; આકથિ ગોપકૈઃ - was said by the cowherds;
Translation
This mountain is so huge. Yet he is holding it in his left hand which is tender like a lotus stalk, for long. What a marvel! Is it that it is the power of the mountain to have lifted itself up?' The Gopas who were Thy onlookers commented thus.
શ્લોકઃ
અહહ ધાર્ષ્ટ્યમમુષ્ય વટોર્ગિરિં
વ્યથિતબાહુરસાવવરોપયેત્ ।
ઇતિ હરિસ્ત્વયિ બદ્ધવિગર્હણો
દિવસસપ્તકમુગ્રમવર્ષયત્ ॥7॥
Meaning
અહહ ધાર્ષ્ટ્યમ્- - Oh! Arrogance; અમુષ્ય વટોઃ- - of this small boy; ગિરિં વ્યથિત-બાહુઃ- - the mountain (with) pained hands; અસૌ-અવરોપયેત્ - this (mountain) will place back; ઇતિ હરિઃ-ત્વયિ - thus Indra in Thee; બદ્ધ-વિગર્હણઃ - full of contempt; દિવસ-સપ્તકમ્- - for seven days; ઉગ્રમ્-અવર્ષયત્ - heavily rained;
Translation
Oh! The arrogance of this small boy! When his hands pain by the weight of the mountain, he will put it back in place.' Saying so Indra who was full of contempt for Thee poured rain heavily for seven days.
શ્લોકઃ
અચલતિ ત્વયિ દેવ પદાત્ પદં
ગલિતસર્વજલે ચ ઘનોત્કરે ।
અપહૃતે મરુતા મરુતાં પતિ-
સ્ત્વદભિશંકિતધીઃ સમુપાદ્રવત્ ॥8॥
Meaning
અચલતિ ત્વયિ - (when) did not move Thou; દેવ - O Lord!; પદાત્ પદં - from Thy place, (even) one step; ગલિત-સર્વ-જલે - (and when) were exhausted all the waters; ચ ઘનોત્કરે - and the clouds; અપહૃતે મરુતા - (and when they) were dispersed by the winds; મરુતાં પતિઃ - the head of the gods Indra; ત્વત્-અભિશંકિત-ધીઃ - (about) Thee (having) a doubtful mind; સમુપાદ્રવત્ - fled;
Translation
Thou had not stirred one step from Thy place. All the clouds were drained and exhausted of their waters. They were drifted away and scattered by the winds. Noticing all this, the head of the gods, Indra was scared of Thy might and fled.
શ્લોકઃ
શમમુપેયુષિ વર્ષભરે તદા
પશુપધેનુકુલે ચ વિનિર્ગતે ।
ભુવિ વિભો સમુપાહિતભૂધરઃ
પ્રમુદિતૈઃ પશુપૈઃ પરિરેભિષે ॥9॥
Meaning
શમમ્-ઉપેયુષિ - subsiding (having) reached; વર્ષભરે તદા - the heavy rain then; પશુપ-ધેનુ-કુલે - the cowherds and the cows; ચ વિનિર્ગતે - had come out (from under the mountain); ભુવિ વિભો - on the ground O Lord!; સમુપાહિત-ભૂધરઃ - (Thee who) had placed the mountain; પ્રમુદિતૈઃ પશુપૈઃ - by the overjoyed cowherds; પરિરેભિષે - were embraced;
Translation
The heavy rain had then subsided and the cows and cowherds had come out from under the mountain. O Lord! Thou then replaced the mountain on the earth and were embraced by the overjoyed cowherds.
શ્લોકઃ
ધરણિમેવ પુરા ધૃતવાનસિ
ક્ષિતિધરોદ્ધરણે તવ કઃ શ્રમઃ ।
ઇતિ નુતસ્ત્રિદશૈઃ કમલાપતે
ગુરુપુરાલય પાલય માં ગદાત્ ॥10॥
Meaning
ધરણિમ્-એવ પુરા - earth also itself, long ago; ધૃતવાનસિ - had lifted up (Thou); ક્ષિતિધર-ઉદ્ધરણે - in mountain lifting up; તવ કઃ શ્રમઃ - Thy what effort; ઇતિ નુતઃ-ત્રિદશૈઃ - thus praised by the gods; કમલાપતે - O Consort of Laxmi!; ગુરુપુરાલય - O Resident of Guruvaayur!; પાલય માં ગદાત્ - save me from ailments;
Translation
O Consort of Laxmi! The gods praised Thee saying that long ago (in the incarnation of a Boar) Thou had lifted up the whole earth itself. Lifting up the mountain was not much of an effort for Thee. O Resident of Guruvaayur! Save me from ailments.
