કદાપિ જન્મર્ક્ષદિને તવ પ્રભો નિમંત્રિતજ્ઞાતિવધૂમહીસુરા ।
મહાનસસ્ત્વાં સવિધે નિધાય સા મહાનસાદૌ વવૃતે વ્રજેશ્વરી ॥1॥
Meaning
કદાપિ જન્મ-ઋક્ષ-દિને - once, on the birth star day; તવ પ્રભો - of Thee, O Lord!; નિમંત્રિત- - having invited; જ્ઞાતિ-વધૂ-મહીસુરાઃ - relatives, their wives and Braahmins; મહા-અનસઃ-ત્વાં સવિધે - a big cart, Thee near it; નિધાય સા - placing, she (Yashodaa); મહાન-સાદૌ - in the kitchen; વવૃતે વ્રજેશ્વરી - got busy Yashoda;
Translation
O Lord! Once on Thy birth star day, Yashoda, the queen of Vraja, who had invited the relatives and their wives and the Braahmins, for the occasion, placed Thee near a big cart and got busy in the kitchen organising the feast.
શ્લોકઃ
તતો ભવત્ત્રાણનિયુક્તબાલકપ્રભીતિસંક્રંદનસંકુલારવૈઃ ।
વિમિશ્રમશ્રાવિ ભવત્સમીપતઃ પરિસ્ફુટદ્દારુચટચ્ચટારવઃ ॥2॥
Meaning
તતઃ ભવત્- - then, for Thy; ત્રાણ-નિયુક્ત- - to protect appointed; બાલક-પ્રભીતિ- - the boys; સંક્રંદન- - fearfully crying; સંકુલા-રવૈઃ - the confused voices; વિમિશ્રમ્-અશ્રાવિ - which were mingled (with) , were heard; ભવત્-સમીપતઃ - from near Thee; પરિસ્ફુટત્-દારુ- - cracking and breaking of wood; ચટત્-ચટા-રવઃ - with the crackling sound;
Translation
Then from near Thee, was heard the fearful cries and confused voices of various boys who were appointed to protect Thee, which was mingled with the sound of the crackling and breaking sound of wood.
શ્લોકઃ
તતસ્તદાકર્ણનસંભ્રમશ્રમપ્રકંપિવક્ષોજભરા વ્રજાંગનાઃ ।
ભવંતમંતર્દદૃશુસ્સમંતતો વિનિષ્પતદ્દારુણદારુમધ્યગમ્ ॥3॥
Meaning
તતઃ-તત્-આકર્ણન- - then that hearing; સંભ્રમ-શ્રમ- - (with) the fear and the effort; પ્રકંપિ-વક્ષોજ-ભરાઃ - heaving with the heavy breasts; વ્રજાંગનાઃ - the Gopikas; ભવંતમ્-અંતઃ-દદૃશુઃ- - Thee saw amongst; સમંતતઃ વિનિષ્પતત્- - all around strewn; દારુણ-દારુ-મધ્યગમ્ - big pieces of wood, in the midst lying;
Translation
Then hearing the terrific sound, frightened, the Gopikas came running with their heavy breasts heaving because of the effort and anxiety. They saw Thee lying amongst the frightful big pieces of broken wood strewn all around.
શ્લોકઃ
શિશોરહો કિં કિમભૂદિતિ દ્રુતં પ્રધાવ્ય નંદઃ પશુપાશ્ચ ભૂસુરાઃ ।
ભવંતમાલોક્ય યશોદયા ધૃતં સમાશ્વસન્નશ્રુજલાર્દ્રલોચનાઃ ॥4॥
Meaning
શિશોઃ-અહો - to the child, Alas!; કિં કિમ્-અભૂત્- - what! What has happened; ઇતિ દ્રુતં પ્રધાવ્ય - thus (saying),swiftly running; નંદઃ પશુપાઃ-ચ - Nanda Gopa, the cowherds; ભૂસુરાઃ ભવંતમ્-આલોક્ય - and the Braahmins, Thee seeing; યશોદયા ધૃતં - (who was) by Yashoda held; સમાશ્વસન્- - felt relieved; અશ્રુ-જલ-આર્દ્ર-લોચનાઃ - (with) eyes wet with tears (of joy);
Translation
Alas! What! What has happened to the child!' thus crying, Nanda, the Gopas and the assembled Braahmins rushed to the spot. Finding Thee in Yashoda's arms, they felt relieved and shed tears of joy seeing that the child was safe.
શ્લોકઃ
કસ્કો નુ કૌતસ્કુત એષ વિસ્મયો વિશંકટં યચ્છકટં વિપાટિતમ્ ।
ન કારણં કિંચિદિહેતિ તે સ્થિતાઃ સ્વનાસિકાદત્તકરાસ્ત્વદીક્ષકાઃ ॥5॥
Meaning
કઃ-કઃ નુ કૌતઃ-કુતઃ - what! What, indeed how? Where? (did it happen); એષ વિસ્મયઃ વિશંકટમ્ - this is a wonder, this huge; યત્-શકટં વિપાટિતમ્ - that (this) cart is shattered to pieces; ન કારણમ્ - no reason; કિંચિત્-ઇહ-ઇતિ - at all is here, thus; તે સ્થિતાઃ - they stood; સ્વ-નાસિકા-દત્ત-કરાઃ- - on their noses placing their hands; ત્વત્-ઈક્ષકાઃ - at Thee looking;
Translation
What ! What happened and how! This is a wonder! This huge cart is shattered! There seems to be no explanation for this', thus exclaiming, they looked at Thee, awestricken, with their fingers placed on their noses.
શ્લોકઃ
કુમારકસ્યાસ્ય પયોધરાર્થિનઃ પ્રરોદને લોલપદાંબુજાહતમ્ ।
મયા મયા દૃષ્ટમનો વિપર્યગાદિતીશ તે પાલકબાલકા જગુઃ ॥6॥
Meaning
કુમારકસ્ય-અસ્ય - of this child; પયોધર-અર્થિનઃ - of being breast fed desirous; પ્રરોદને - while crying; લોલ-પદ-અંબુજ- - by the movement of the lotus like legs; આહતમ્ - was hit (the cart); મયા મયા દૃષ્ટમ્- - I saw, I saw; અનઃ વિપર્યગાત્- - the cart overturned; ઇતિ-ઈશ - thus O Lord; તે પાલક-બાલકાઃ - the children who were guarding Thee; જગુઃ - said;
Translation
O Lord! The children who were guarding Thee, declared 'This child who was desirous of being breast fed, moved his lotus like legs, and hit the cart which overturned. I saw, even I saw.'
શ્લોકઃ
ભિયા તદા કિંચિદજાનતામિદં કુમારકાણામતિદુર્ઘટં વચઃ ।
ભવત્પ્રભાવાવિદુરૈરિતીરિતં મનાગિવાશંક્યત દૃષ્ટપૂતનૈઃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ભિયા તદા - out of fright , then; કિંચિત્-અજાનતામ્- - anything those who did not know (to them); ઇદં કુમારકાણામ્- - the children's; અતિ-દુર્ઘટં વચઃ - (this was) a very improbable statement; ભવત્-પ્રભાવ-અવિદુરૈઃ- - Thy prowess' those not knowing; ઇતિ-ઈરિતં મનાક્-ઇવ- - this statement, a little bit; અશંક્યત દૃષ્ટ-પૂતનૈઃ - was feared (to be true), who had witnessed (the incident of) Pootanaa;
Translation
Then to the people who knew nothing of Thy prowess, the words of the frightened children were entirely baseless. But to those who knew of even a bit of Thy prowess and had witnessed the incident of Pootanaa, could not reject their statement altogether.

પ્રવાલતામ્રં કિમિદં પદં ક્ષતં સરોજરમ્યૌ નુ કરૌ વિરોજિતૌ।
ઇતિ પ્રસર્પત્કરુણાતરંગિતાસ્ત્વદંગમાપસ્પૃશુરંગનાજનાઃ ॥8॥
Meaning
પ્રવાલ-તામ્રં - tender leaves like pink; કિમ્-ઇદં પદં ક્ષતં - is this (little) foot hurt; સરોજ-રમ્યૌ નુ - lotuses like charming indeed; કરૌ વિરોજિતૌ - (these) hands, have (they) been hurt; ઇતિ પ્રસર્પત્-કરુણા- - thus with overflowing sympathy; તરંગિતાઃ-ત્વત્-અંગમ્- - moved by (such concern), Thy body; આપસ્પૃશુઃ-અંગનાજનાઃ - stroked gently, the women folk;
Translation
Pink like tender leaves, these legs, have they been hurt? These hands, charming like the lotuses, have they been injured?' Thus with overflowing sympathy and moved with such concern, the women folk stroked Thy body gently.
શ્લોકઃ
અયે સુતં દેહિ જગત્પતેઃ કૃપાતરંગપાતાત્પરિપાતમદ્ય મે ।
ઇતિ સ્મ સંગૃહ્ય પિતા ત્વદંગકં મુહુર્મુહુઃ શ્લિષ્યતિ જાતકંટકઃ ॥9॥
Meaning
અયે સુતં દેહિ - O (Yashoda) give (me) my son; જગત્પતેઃ કૃપાતરંગ-પાતાત્- - by the Lord's showers of mercy; પરિપાતમ્-અદ્ય મે - (was) saved , today, my son; ઇતિ સ્મ સંગૃહ્ય - thus collecting; પિતા ત્વત્-અંગકમ્ - (Thy) father , Thy body; મુહુઃ-મુહુઃ શ્લિષ્યતિ - again and again embraces; જાત-કંટકઃ - with his body full of horripilation;
Translation
O Yashoda! Give me my son. By the Lord's showers of mercy today my son was saved!' Thus saying and collecting Thee in his arms, Thy father embraced Thee again and again, whose body was full of horripilation.
શ્લોકઃ
અનોનિલીનઃ કિલ હંતુમાગતઃ સુરારિરેવં ભવતા વિહિંસિતઃ ।
રજોઽપિ નો દૃષ્ટમમુષ્ય તત્કથં સ શુદ્ધસત્ત્વે ત્વયિ લીનવાન્ ધ્રુવમ્ ॥10॥
Meaning
અનઃ-નિલીનઃ - as a cart, disguised; કિલ હંતુમ્-આગતઃ - indeed, to kill, had come; સુરારિઃ-એવં - the Asura, was thus; ભવતા વિહિંસિતઃ - by Thee was killed; રજઃ-અપિ નઃ દૃષ્ટમ્-અમુષ્ય - even a speck of him (of Rajo Guna) was not seen; તત્-કથં સ - how can it be that he; શુદ્ધ-સત્વે ત્વયિ - who are pure Sattva, in Thee; લીનવાન્ ધ્રુવમ્ - merged certainly;
Translation
The Asura who had come to kill Thee, disguised as a cart, was destroyed by Thee. But even a trace of his body or evil nature (Rajas) was not seen. How can that be? Certainly, he became pure (by coming in contact with Thee) and merged in Thy pure Sattvic Self.
શ્લોકઃ
પ્રપૂજિતૈસ્તત્ર તતો દ્વિજાતિભિર્વિશેષતો લંભિતમંગલાશિષઃ ।
વ્રજં નિજૈર્બાલ્યરસૈર્વિમોહયન્ મરુત્પુરાધીશ રુજાં જહીહિ મે ॥11॥
Meaning
પ્રપૂજિતૈઃ-તત્ર - well honoured there; તતઃ દ્વિજાતિભિઃ- - then by the Braahamins; વિશેષતઃ - specially; લંભિત-મંગલ-આશિષઃ - conferred with auspicious blessings; વ્રજં - Gokul; નિજૈઃ-બાલ્ય-રસૈઃ- - with Thy childish sweet ways; વિમોહયન્ - captivating (delighting); મરુત્પુરાધીશ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; રુજાં જહીહિ મે - suffering, sheer away, mine;
Translation
The Braahmins who were invited and were well honoured specially conferred their auspicious blessings on Thee. With Thy captivating childish sweet ways, Thou delighted the whole of Vraja. O Lord of Guruvaayur! May Thou sheer away my sufferings.
