કદાચન વ્રજશિશુભિઃ સમં ભવાન્
વનાશને વિહિતમતિઃ પ્રગેતરામ્ ।
સમાવૃતો બહુતરવત્સમંડલૈઃ
સતેમનૈર્નિરગમદીશ જેમનૈઃ ॥1॥
Meaning
કદાચન - once; વ્રજશિશુભિઃ સમં - along with the children of Gokul; ભવાન્ વન-અશને - Thou, eating in the woods (picnic); વિહિત-મતિઃ - making up the mind; પ્રગેતરાં સમાવૃતઃ - early in the morning surrounded by; બહુતર-વત્સ-મંડલૈઃ - many herds of calves; સતેમનૈઃ-નિરગમત્- - with eatables set out; ઈશ જેમનૈઃ - O Lord! (also taking along) cooked rice;
Translation
Once Thou decided to have a picnic in the woods. Along with the children of Gokul and surrounded by a large herd of calves, Thou set out early in the morning. O Lord Thou also took along eatables, cooked rice and other delicacies.
શ્લોકઃ
વિનિર્યતસ્તવ ચરણાંબુજદ્વયા-
દુદંચિતં ત્રિભુવનપાવનં રજઃ ।
મહર્ષયઃ પુલકધરૈઃ કલેબરૈ-
રુદૂહિરે ધૃતભવદીક્ષણોત્સવાઃ ॥2॥
Meaning
વિનિર્યતઃ તવ - Thy having set out; ચરણ-અંબુજ-દ્વયાત્- - from Thy two lotus like feet; ઉદંચિતં - risen up; ત્રિભુવન-પાવનં રજઃ - (that which) sanctifies the three worlds, dust; મહર્ષયઃ પુલકધરૈઃ - the great sages with horripilation; કલેબરૈઃ-ઉદૂહિરે - on their bodies received; ધૃત-ભવત્-ઈક્ષણ- - holding Thy sight; ઉત્સવાઃ - as celebration;
Translation
When Thou set out for the woods, from Thy lotus like two feet the dust arose which sanctifies the three worlds. The great sages received that dust on their bodies with great joy and horripilation as they feasted their eyes on Thy sight.
શ્લોકઃ
પ્રચારયત્યવિરલશાદ્વલે તલે
પશૂન્ વિભો ભવતિ સમં કુમારકૈઃ ।
અઘાસુરો ન્યરુણદઘાય વર્તની
ભયાનકઃ સપદિ શયાનકાકૃતિઃ ॥3॥
Meaning
પ્રચારયતિ- - grazing; અવિરલ-શાદ્વલે તલે - on the thick grass land; પશૂન્ વિભો - the cattle, O Lord!; ભવતિ સમં કુમારકૈઃ - Thee with the lads; અઘાસુરઃ ન્યરુણત્- - Aghaasura blocked; અઘાય વર્તની - for an evil deed the path; ભયાનકઃ સપદિ - most terrifying, suddenly; શયાનક-આકૃતિઃ - in a python form;
Translation
Thou and the lads were grazing the cattle on the thick grass lands. Suddenly the most terrifying demon Aghaasura, in the form of a formidable python, with an evil intention blocked the way.
શ્લોકઃ
મહાચલપ્રતિમતનોર્ગુહાનિભ-
પ્રસારિતપ્રથિતમુખસ્ય કાનને ।
મુખોદરં વિહરણકૌતુકાદ્ગતાઃ
કુમારકાઃ કિમપિ વિદૂરગે ત્વયિ ॥4॥
Meaning
મહાચલ-પ્રતિમ-તનોઃ- - with a mountain like body; ગુહા-નિભ-પ્રસારિત- - cave like spread out; પ્રથિત-મુખસ્ય - extended mouth; કાનને - in the forest; મુખ-ઉદરં - in the mouth cavity; વિહરણ-કૌતુકાત્- - to explore in eagerness; ગતાઃ કુમારકાઃ - entered the lads; કિમ્-અપિ - (when) somewhat; વિદૂરગે ત્વયિ - ahead had gone, Thee;
Translation
Thou had gone a little ahead. The lads mistook the huge body of the Asura for a mountain and its large spread out mouth for a cave. In their eagerness to explore the woods, they entered the python's open mouth.
શ્લોકઃ
પ્રમાદતઃ પ્રવિશતિ પન્નગોદરં
ક્વથત્તનૌ પશુપકુલે સવાત્સકે ।
વિદન્નિદં ત્વમપિ વિવેશિથ પ્રભો
સુહૃજ્જનં વિશરણમાશુ રક્ષિતુમ્ ॥5॥
Meaning
પ્રમાદતઃ પ્રવિશતિ - by mistake, had entered; પન્નગ-ઉદરં - the snake's belly; ક્વથત્-તનૌ - (they) felt heat on their bodies; પશુપકુલે સવાત્સકે - the Gopa boys along with the calves; વિદન્-ઇદં ત્વમ્-અપિ - knowing this, Thou also; વિવેશિથ પ્રભો - entered O Lord!; સુહૃત્-જનં - the friend folk; વિશરણમ્- - who were helpless; આશુ રક્ષિતુમ્ - immediately to save;
Translation
The Gopa boys along with the calves had entered the belly of the snake by mistake and started to feel the heat therein. O Lord! Apprehending the situation, Thou also entered immediately to save the helpless friends.
શ્લોકઃ
ગલોદરે વિપુલિતવર્ષ્મણા ત્વયા
મહોરગે લુઠતિ નિરુદ્ધમારુતે ।
દ્રુતં ભવાન્ વિદલિતકંઠમંડલો
વિમોચયન્ પશુપપશૂન્ વિનિર્યયૌ ॥6॥
Meaning
ગલ-ઉદરે - in the throat's cavity; વિપુલિત-વર્ષ્મણા - with (Thy) increased body; ત્વયા - by Thee; મહોરગે લુઠતિ - (when) the python was wreathing; નિરુદ્ધ-મારુતે - because of the obstruction of the breath; દ્રુતં ભવાન્ - quickly Thou; વિદલિત-કંઠ-મંડલઃ - tearing asunder the neck portion; વિમોચયન્ પશુપ-પશૂન્ - released the Gopa boys and the calves; વિનિર્યયૌ - and came out;
Translation
In the cavity of the throat of the python, Thou increased Thy size of Thy body, thus obstructing its breath. It began to wreath in agony, then Thou tore open its neck portion and releasing the Gopa boys and the calves, Thou also came out.

ક્ષણં દિવિ ત્વદુપગમાર્થમાસ્થિતં
મહાસુરપ્રભવમહો મહો મહત્ ।
વિનિર્ગતે ત્વયિ તુ નિલીનમંજસા
નભઃસ્થલે નનૃતુરથો જગુઃ સુરાઃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ક્ષણં દિવિ - for an instant, in the sky; ત્વત્-ઉપગમ-અર્થમ્-આસ્થિતં - Thy emergence awaiting; મહા-અસુર-પ્રભવમ્- - from the great Asura emerging; અહો મહઃ મહત્ - Oh! A brilliance great; વિનિર્ગતે ત્વયિ તુ - came out as Thou; નિલીનમ્-અંજસા - merged immediately (into Thee only); નભઃ-સ્થલે - in the skies; નનૃતુઃ-અથઃ - danced and then; જગુઃ સુરાઃ - sang the gods;
Translation
A great brilliance emerged from the Asura and rose, in the sky and awaited Thy emerging from the body of the python. Oh! What a wonder, as soon as Thou came out the brilliance merged into Thee, while the gods danced and sang.

સવિસ્મયૈઃ કમલભવાદિભિઃ સુરૈ-
રનુદ્રુતસ્તદનુ ગતઃ કુમારકૈઃ ।
દિને પુનસ્તરુણદશામુપેયુષિ
સ્વકૈર્ભવાનતનુત ભોજનોત્સવમ્ ॥8॥
Meaning
સવિસ્મયૈઃ - wonderstruck; કમલભવ-આદિભિઃ - Brahamaa and other; સુરૈઃ-અનુદ્રુતઃ - gods (watching and) following (Thee); તદનુ ગતઃ - after that (Thou) went; કુમારકૈઃ દિને પુનઃ- - with the Gopa boys (when) the day again; તરુણ-દશામ્-ઉપેયુષિ - youthful state attained (it became noon); સ્વકૈઃ ભવાન્- - with (Thy) own people Thou; અતનુત ભોજન-ઉત્સવમ્ - carried out the food celebration (picnic lunch);
Translation
Brahmaa and other gods were wonderstruck and watched Thee and followed Thee in the skies. After that Thou went with the Gopa boys when the day had reached noontime and with Thy own people Thou celebrated the food festival, the picnic lunch.

વિષાણિકામપિ મુરલીં નિતંબકે
નિવેશયન્ કબલધરઃ કરાંબુજે ।
પ્રહાસયન્ કલવચનૈઃ કુમારકાન્
બુભોજિથ ત્રિદશગણૈર્મુદા નુતઃ ॥9॥
Meaning
વિષાણિકામ્-અપિ - the horn and also; મુરલીં નિતંબકે - the flute, in the waist band; નિવેશયન્ - tucking; કબલધરઃ કરાંબુજે - a ball of rice holding in the lotus like hand; પ્રહાસયન્ - making (them) laugh; કલવચનૈઃ - by humorous talks; કુમારકાન્ બુભોજિથ - the boys, (Thou) ate; ત્રિદશગણૈઃ - by the gods; મુદા નુતઃ - joyfully praised;
Translation
The horn and the flute were tucked in Thy waist band. Thou were holding a ball of rice in Thy lotus like hand and provoked peals of laughter among the boys by Thy humorous talks. As Thou took Thy meal the gods joyfully sang Thy praises.
શ્લોકઃ
સુખાશનં ત્વિહ તવ ગોપમંડલે
મખાશનાત્ પ્રિયમિવ દેવમંડલે ।
ઇતિ સ્તુતસ્ત્રિદશવરૈર્જગત્પતે
મરુત્પુરીનિલય ગદાત્ પ્રપાહિ મામ્ ॥10॥
Meaning
સુખ-અશનં તુ -ઇહ - the happy meal indeed here; તવ ગોપ-મંડલે - to Thee amidst the Gopas; મખ-અશનાત્ - than the offerings of the sacrifices; પ્રિયમ્-ઇવ - is more pleasing; દેવ-મંડલે - amidst the gods; ઇતિ સ્તુતઃ-ત્રિદશવરૈઃ- - thus praised by the great gods; જગત્પતે - O Lord of the universe!; મરુત્પુરીનિલય - residing in Guruvaayur; ગદાત્ પ્રપાહિ મામ્ - from ailments save me;
Translation
O Lord of the Universe! The great gods praised Thee saying that the meal taken happily with the Gopa boys gave Thee more pleasure than the sacrificial offerings which Thou had received with the gods. O Thou Residing in Guruvaayur! Save me from my ailments.
