અથ વારિણિ ઘોરતરં ફણિનં
પ્રતિવારયિતું કૃતધીર્ભગવન્ ।
દ્રુતમારિથ તીરગનીપતરું
વિષમારુતશોષિતપર્ણચયમ્ ॥1॥
Meaning
અથ વારિણિ - then in the water; ઘોરતરં ફણિનં - very fierce that serpent; પ્રતિવારયિતું - to drive away; કૃતધીઃ - having decided; ભગવન્ - O Lord; દ્રુતમ્-આરિથ - quickly (Thou) approached; તીરગ-નીપ-તરું - the bank situated Kadamba tree; વિષ-મારુત-શોષિત- - the poisoned breeze had dried up; પર્ણ-ચયમ્ - the cluster of leaves;
Translation
O Lord! Thou then made up Thy mind to drive away the fierce serpent from the waters. Thou quickly approached and got up on a Kadamba tree standing on the bank of the river, with its leaves withered due to the poisonous breeze.
શ્લોકઃ
અધિરુહ્ય પદાંબુરુહેણ ચ તં
નવપલ્લવતુલ્યમનોજ્ઞરુચા ।
હ્રદવારિણિ દૂરતરં ન્યપતઃ
પરિઘૂર્ણિતઘોરતરંગ્ગણે ॥2॥
Meaning
અધિરુહ્ય - climbing with; પદ-અંબુ-રુહેણ - feet tender lotus like; ચ તં - and that (tree); નવ-પલ્લવ-તુલ્ય- - like tender new leaves; મનોજ્ઞ-રુચા - charming and splendorous; હ્રદ-વારિણિ - into the deep water; દૂરતરં ન્યપતઃ - far out (Thou) jumped; પરિઘૂર્ણિત- - with swirling; ઘોર-તરંગ-ગણે - fierce waves of water;
Translation
Thou climbed that tree with Thy lotus like splendorous charming feet resembling tender leaves, and with a long leap jumped far out into the deep waters with swirling fierce waves.
શ્લોકઃ
ભુવનત્રયભારભૃતો ભવતો
ગુરુભારવિકંપિવિજૃંભિજલા ।
પરિમજ્જયતિ સ્મ ધનુશ્શતકં
તટિની ઝટિતિ સ્ફુટઘોષવતી ॥3॥
Meaning
ભુવન-ત્રય-ભાર-ભૃતઃ - of the three worlds the weight bearing; ભવતઃ ગુરુ-ભાર- - of Thee the immense weight (causing); વિકંપિ-વિજૃંભિ-જલા - swirling and swelling with its waters; પરિમજ્જયતિ સ્મ - started to submerge; ધનુઃ-શતકં - the area of a hundred bows (in measurement); તટિની ઝટિતિ - on the river bed, and suddenly; સ્ફુટ-ઘોષવતી - (the river) made an intense roar;
Translation
When, Thou the bearer of the weight of the three worlds, jumped, Thy immense weight caused the waters to swirl and swell. On the river bed an area of a hundred bows (yards) submerged, as a sudden roar arose from the river.
શ્લોકઃ
અથ દિક્ષુ વિદિક્ષુ પરિક્ષુભિત-
ભ્રમિતોદરવારિનિનાદભરૈઃ ।
ઉદકાદુદગાદુરગાધિપતિ-
સ્ત્વદુપાંતમશાંતરુષાઽંધમનાઃ ॥4॥
Meaning
અથ દિક્ષુ વિદિક્ષુ - then, in all the directions and the intermediary directions; પરિક્ષુભિત-ભ્રમિત- - turbulent swirling; ઉદર-વારિ-નિનાદ-ભરૈઃ - from the middle of the waters roaring aloud; ઉદકાત્-ઉદગાત્- - from (that) water came out; ઉરગાધિપતિઃ- - the king of serpents; ત્વત્-ઉપાંતમ્- - near Thee; અશાંત-રુષા- - disturbed and angered; અંધમનાઃ - and so blinded (with rage);
Translation
The loud roar from the middle of the waters which extended to all the directions and the intermediary directions, disturbed and angered the serpent king Kaaliya. He came out of the water and rushed up to Thee in a fit of blinded anger.
શ્લોકઃ
ફણશૃંગસહસ્રવિનિસ્સૃમર-
જ્વલદગ્નિકણોગ્રવિષાંબુધરમ્ ।
પુરતઃ ફણિનં સમલોકયથા
બહુશૃંગિણમંજનશૈલમિવ ॥5॥
Meaning
ફણ-શૃંગ- - (with) hoods , peak (like); સહસ્ર-વિનિઃસૃમર- - thousands of them emitting; જ્વલત્-અગ્નિ-કણ- - burning like fire flakes; ઉગ્ર-વિષ-અંબુધરમ્ - fierce poison fluid bearing; પુરતઃ ફણિનં - in front the serpent; સમલોકયથાઃ - (Thou) saw; બહુ-શૃંગિ-ગણમ્- - many peaked; અંજન-શૈલમ્-ઇવ - black mountain, as if;
Translation
Thou saw the serpent in front with his thousands of peak like hoods emitting burning fire flakes and fierce poison fluid, looking like a many peaked black mountain.
શ્લોકઃ
જ્વલદક્ષિ પરિક્ષરદુગ્રવિષ-
શ્વસનોષ્મભરઃ સ મહાભુજગઃ ।
પરિદશ્ય ભવંતમનંતબલં
સમવેષ્ટયદસ્ફુટચેષ્ટમહો ॥6॥
Meaning
જ્વલત્-અક્ષિ - with flaming eyes; પરિક્ષરત્-ઉગ્ર-વિષ- - emitting deadly poison; શ્વસન્-ઊષ્મભરઃ - breathing out intense heat; સ મહાભુજગઃ - that huge serpent; પરિદશ્ય - biting; ભવંતમ્-અનંતબલં - Thee of limitless strength; સમવેષ્ટયત્- - coiled (around Thee); અસ્ફુટ-ચેષ્ટમ્- - making invisible Thy movements; અહો - Alas;
Translation
Alas! That huge serpent emitting deadly poison and breathing out intense heat, bit Thee of limitless strength, all over Thy body. Then it coiled around Thee making Thy body and Thy movements invisible.
શ્લોકઃ
અવિલોક્ય ભવંતમથાકુલિતે
તટગામિનિ બાલકધેનુગણે ।
વ્રજગેહતલેઽપ્યનિમિત્તશતં
સમુદીક્ષ્ય ગતા યમુનાં પશુપાઃ ॥7॥
Meaning
અવિલોક્ય ભવંતમ્- - not seeing Thee; અથ-આકુલિતે - then distressed; તટ-ગામિનિ - (who) to the bank (of river Yamunaa) had come; બાલક-ધેનુ-ગણે - the children and the cows all; વ્રજ-ગેહ-તલે-અપિ- - in Gokula houses also; અનિમિત્ત-શતં - evil omens innumerable; સમુદીક્ષ્ય ગતા - seeing went; યમુનાં પશુપાઃ - towards Yamunaa the Gopas;
Translation
The Gopa boys and the cows were distressed when they did not see Thee, and went to the bank of the river Yamunaa. In the houses in Gokula also the Gopas saw hundreds of evil omens and they also rushed towards Yamunaa.
શ્લોકઃ
અખિલેષુ વિભો ભવદીય દશા-
મવલોક્ય જિહાસુષુ જીવભરમ્ ।
ફણિબંધનમાશુ વિમુચ્ય જવા-
દુદગમ્યત હાસજુષા ભવતા ॥8॥
Meaning
અખિલેષુ - (as) all of them; વિભો - O Lord; ભવદીય-દશામ્ - Thy plight; અવલોક્ય - seeing; જિહાસુષુ - ready to give up their; જીવભરમ્ - lives; ફણિ-બંધનમ્- - the coils of the snake; આશુ વિમુચ્ય - quickly shedding; જવાત્-ઉદગમ્યત - hastily emerged; હાસજુષા ભવતા - with a smile, Thou;
Translation
O Lord! All of them were overwhelmed with grief on seeing Thy plight and were ready to give up their lives in order to save Thee. Just then, Thou quickly shed the coils of the snake and hastily emerged with a smile.
શ્લોકઃ
અધિરુહ્ય તતઃ ફણિરાજફણાન્
નનૃતે ભવતા મૃદુપાદરુચા ।
કલશિંજિતનૂપુરમંજુમિલ-
ત્કરકંકણસંકુલસંક્વણિતમ્ ॥9॥
Meaning
અધિરુહ્ય તતઃ - climbing upon then; ફણિ-રાજ-ફણાન્ - the serpent king,s hoods; નનૃતે ભવતા - dance was performed by Thee; મૃદુ-પાદ-રુચા - with delicate feet beautiful; કલશિંજિત-નૂપુર- - the gentle sound of the anklets; મંજુ-મિલત્- - beautifully mingling with; કર-કંકણ-સંકુલ- - the bangles on the wrists'; સંક્વણિતમ્ - tinkling;
Translation
Then Thou mounted on the hoods of the serpent king and danced with Thy delicate beautiful feet. The gentle sound of the anklets mingled beautifully and rhythmically with the tinkling of the bangles on Thy wrists.
શ્લોકઃ
જહૃષુઃ પશુપાસ્તુતુષુર્મુનયો
વવૃષુઃ કુસુમાનિ સુરેંદ્રગણાઃ ।
ત્વયિ નૃત્યતિ મારુતગેહપતે
પરિપાહિ સ માં ત્વમદાંતગદાત્ ॥10॥
Meaning
જહૃષુઃ પશુપાઃ- - rejoiced the Gopas; તુતુષુઃ-મુનયઃ - sang hymns the sages; વવૃષુઃ કુસુમાનિ - showered flowers; સુરેંદ્ર-ગણાઃ - the gods' groups; ત્વયિ નૃત્યતિ - when Thou danced; મારુતગેહપતે - O Lord of Guruvaayur; પરિપાહિ - save; સ - That (Thou); માં - me; ત્વમ્- - Thou; અદાંત-ગદાત્ - (from) severe illness;
Translation
As Thou performed the dance, the Gopas rejoiced, the sages sang hymns, and the gods showered flowers. O Lord of the Guruvaayur temple! Such that Thou are, save me from the severe illness.
