ശ്ലോകഃ
തദനു നംദമമംദശുഭാസ്പദം നൃപപുരീം കരദാനകൃതേ ഗതമ്।
സമവലോക്യ ജഗാദ ഭവത്പിതാ വിദിതകംസസഹായജനോദ്യമഃ ॥1॥
Meaning
തദനു നംദമ്- - after that to Nanda; അമംദ-ശുഭ-ആസ്പദമ് - (who is) of non dimmed virtues the abode; നൃപ-പുരീമ് - to the king's city; കര-ദാന-കൃതേ ഗതമ് - to pay his tributes (taxes), who had gone; സമവലോക്യ - seeing (meeting); ജഗാദ ഭവത്-പിതാ - said (to Nanda), Thy father (Vasudeva); വിദിത-കംസ- - who knew of Kansa's; സഹായജന-ഉദ്യമഃ - and Kansa's supporters' activities;
Translation
Thereafter, Nanda (who is the abode of undiminished virtues), went to the king's city to pay his tributes (taxes). On meeting him, Thy father Vasudeva who knew of the activities of Kansa and his supporters, told him that.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അയി സഖേ തവ ബാലകജന്മ മാം സുഖയതേഽദ്യ നിജാത്മജജന്മവത് ।
ഇതി ഭവത്പിതൃതാം വ്രജനായകേ സമധിരോപ്യ ശശംസ തമാദരാത് ॥2॥
Meaning
അയി സഖേ - O friend!; തവ ബാലക ജന്മ - to you a son's birth; മാം-സുഖയതേ-അദ്യ - gives me pleasure now; നിജ-ആത്മജ-ജന്മവത് - my own son's birth like; ഇതി ഭവത്-പിതൃതാം - thus Thy fatherhood; വ്രജനായകേ സമധിരോപ്യ - to the cowherd chief, (he cleverly) attributed; ശശംസ തമ്-ആദരാത് - and praised him with affection;
Translation
"O Friend! The birth of a son to you gives me pleasure as if a son were born to myself." Thus he cleverly attributed Thy fatherhood on Nanda, and praised him with affection.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ഇഹ ച സംത്യനിമിത്തശതാനി തേ കടകസീമ്നി തതോ ലഘു ഗമ്യതാമ് ।
ഇതി ച തദ്വചസാ വ്രജനായകോ ഭവദപായഭിയാ ദ്രുതമായയൌ ॥3॥
Meaning
ഇഹ ച സംതി- - and here there are; അനിമിത്ത-ശതാനി - bad omens in hundreds; തേ കടക-സീമ്നി - at your residence; തതഃ ലഘു ഗമ്യതാമ് - therefore soon (you) should go; ഇതി ച തത്-വചസാ - and thus, by his (Vaudeva's) words; വ്രജനായകഃ - the cowherd chieftain (Nandagopa); ഭവത്-അപായ-ഭിയാ - to Thee danger apprehending; ദ്രുതമ്-ആയയൌ - quickly returned;
Translation
"Here there are bad omens in hundreds and soon at your residence also it will not be safe, so you should return soon". Thus by Vasudeva's words, apprehending danger to Thee, Nanda quickly returned.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അവസരേ ഖലു തത്ര ച കാചന വ്രജപദേ മധുരാകൃതിരംഗനാ ।
തരലഷട്പദലാലിതകുംതലാ കപടപോതക തേ നികടം ഗതാ ॥4॥
Meaning
അവസരേ ഖലു തത്ര ച - at that time, indeed, and there; കാചന വ്രജപദേ - some (female) in Gokula; മധുര-ആകൃതിഃ-അംഗനാ - beautiful looking woman; തരല-ഷട്പദ- - (with) hovering bees; ലാലിത-കുംതലാ - around (her) locks of hair (due to the sweet smell); കപട-പോതക - (O Thou) in the guise of a child!; തേ നികടം ഗതാ - went near Thee;
Translation
Just then there in Gokula, some beautiful looking woman with honey bees hovering around the sweet smelling flowers in her hair locks, entered. O Thou! In the guise of a child, she approached Thee.
ശ്ലോകഃ
സപദി സാ ഹൃതബാലകചേതനാ നിശിചരാന്വയജാ കില പൂതനാ ।
വ്രജവധൂഷ്വിഹ കേയമിതി ക്ഷണം വിമൃശതീഷു ഭവംതമുപാദദേ ॥5॥
Meaning
സപദി സാ - quickly she; ഹൃത-ബാലക-ചേതനാ - who had taken the children' lives; നിശിചര-അന്വയ-ജാ - of demon clan born; കില പൂതനാ - indeed Pootanaa; വ്രജ-വധൂഷു-ഇഹ - among the Vraja women here; കാ-ഇയമ്-ഇതി - who is this, thus; ക്ഷണം വിമൃശതീഷു - for a moment wondering; ഭവംതമ്-ഉപാദദേ - Thee lifted up (in her arms);
Translation
Quickly she, Pootanaa, born in the clan of demons, who had taken the lives of many children, lifted Thee up, even as the Vraja women were for a second wondering as to who she was.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ലലിതഭാവവിലാസഹൃതാത്മഭിര്യുവതിഭിഃ പ്രതിരോദ്ധുമപാരിതാ ।
സ്തനമസൌ ഭവനാംതനിഷേദുഷീ പ്രദദുഷീ ഭവതേ കപടാത്മനേ ॥5॥
Meaning
ലലിത-ഭാവ-വിലാസ- - by her charming appearance and graceful movements; ഹൃത-ആത്മഭിഃ-യുവതിഭിഃ - with captivated minds, the young women; പ്രതിരോദ്ധുമ്-അപാരിതാ - to deter (stop) not being able; സ്തനമ്-അസൌ - her breasts this (Pootanaa); ഭവന-അംത-നിഷേദുഷീ - inside the house sitting; പ്രദദുഷീ ഭവതേ - gave (her breasts) to Thee; കപട-ആത്മനേ - the illusive child;
Translation
Her charming appearance and graceful movements captivated the minds of the Gopis who were unable to stop her from making advances. So this Pootanaa took her seat inside the house as she applied Thee, the illusive child, to her breasts.
ശ്ലോകഃ
സമധിരുഹ്യ തദംകമശംകിതസ്ത്വമഥ ബാലകലോപനരോഷിതഃ ।
മഹദിവാമ്രഫലം കുചമംഡലം പ്രതിചുചൂഷിഥ ദുർവിഷദൂഷിതമ് ॥7॥
Meaning
സമധിരുഹ്യ തത്-അംകമ്- - climbing in her lap; അശംകിതഃ-ത്വമ്-അഥ - unhesitatingly Thou then; ബാലക-ലോപന-രോഷിതഃ - by the children' killing angered; മഹത്-ഇവ-ആമ്ര-ഫലമ് - huge, as if it were a mango fruit; കുച-മംഡലം പ്രതി-ചുചൂഷിഥ - the breast, sucked well; ദുർവിഷ-ദൂഷിതമ് - with strong poison smeared;
Translation
Thou who were angered by her killing of the children, unhesitatingly climbed in her lap and sucked well her poison smeared breasts as if it were a huge mango fruit.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അസുഭിരേവ സമം ധയതി ത്വയി സ്തനമസൌ സ്തനിതോപമനിസ്വനാ ।
നിരപതദ്ഭയദായി നിജം വപുഃ പ്രതിഗതാ പ്രവിസാര്യ ഭുജാവുഭൌ ॥8॥
Meaning
അസുഭിഃ-ഏവ സമമ് - her life breath along with; ധയതി ത്വയി സ്തനമ്- - sucking (when) Thou were the breast; അസൌ സ്തനിത-ഉപമ-നിസ്വനാ - this Pootanaa, with thunder like noise; നിരപതത്- - fell down; ഭയദായി നിജം വപുഃ - ferocious her own body; പ്രതിഗതാ - reverting to; പ്രവിസാര്യ ഭുജൌ-ഉഭൌ - out stretching both the hands;
Translation
Thou sucked the breast along with her life force. This Pootanaa fell down with a thunder like noise reverting to her natural ferocious body with both hands stretching out.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ഭയദഘോഷണഭീഷണവിഗ്രഹശ്രവണദര്ശനമോഹിതവല്ലവേ ।
വ്രജപദേ തദുരഃസ്ഥലഖേലനം നനു ഭവംതമഗൃഹ്ണത ഗോപികാഃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ഭയദ-ഘോഷണ- - the terrifying sound; ഭീഷണ-വിഗ്രഹ- - and the frightful form; ശ്രവണ-ദര്ശന- - hearing and seeing; മോഹിത-വല്ലവേ - (which) stunned the gopas; വ്രജപദേ - and (the whole of) Gokul; തത്-ഉദരഃ-സ്ഥല- - on her chest; ഖേലനം നനു - playing indeed; ഭവംതമ്-അഗൃഹ്ണത - Thee picked up; ഗോപികാഃ - the Gopis;
Translation
The whole of Gokul stood stunned hearing the terrifying sound and seeing the frightful form. The Gopis picked Thee up even as Thou were playing on the chest of the dead demoness.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ഭുവനമംഗലനാമഭിരേവ തേ യുവതിഭിര്ബഹുധാ കൃതരക്ഷണഃ ।
ത്വമയി വാതനികേതനനാഥ മാമഗദയന് കുരു താവകസേവകമ് ॥10॥
Meaning
ഭുവന-മംഗല- - O Thou who confers auspiciousness on the world!; നാമഭിഃ-ഏവ തേ - by Thy name alone; യുവതിഭിഃ-ബഹുധാ - by the young women, in various ways; കൃതരക്ഷണഃ ത്വമ്-അയി - Thou were protected, O Thou!; വാതനികേതനനാഥ - Lord of Guruvaayur!; മാമ്-അഗദയന് - making me devoid of ailments; കുരു താവക-സേവകമ് - make me Thy devotee;
Translation
O Thou! Who confers auspiciousness on to the world, the young women protected Thee in various ways with chanting Thy names alone. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Making me devoid of my ailments, make me Thy devotee.
