മദനാതുരചേതസോഽന്വഹം ഭവദംഘ്രിദ്വയദാസ്യകാമ്യയാ ।
യമുനാതടസീമ്നി സൈകതീം തരലാക്ഷ്യോ ഗിരിജാം സമാര്ചിചന് ॥1॥
Meaning
മദന-ആതുര-ചേതസഃ- - with minds overcome by the god of love; അന്വഹം - everyday; ഭവത്-അംഘ്രി-ദ്വയ- - Thy two feet; ദാസ്യ-കാമ്യയാ - to serve desiring; യമുനാ-തട-സീമ്നി - on the Yamunaa banks nearby; സൈകതീം - made of sand (an image); തരല-ആക്ഷ്യഃ - the beautiful eyed ones (girls); ഗിരിജാം - the goddess Kaatyaayini; സമാര്ചിചന് - worshipped;
Translation
The beautiful eyed girls of Vraja, overcome by Cupid and love for Thee were desirous of serving Thy two lotus feet. To achieve this, everyday, on the banks of Yamunaa, they made an image of sand of goddess Girijaa and worshipped it.
ശ്ലോകഃ
തവ നാമകഥാരതാഃ സമം സുദൃശഃ പ്രാതരുപാഗതാ നദീമ് ।
ഉപഹാരശതൈരപൂജയന് ദയിതോ നംദസുതോ ഭവേദിതി ॥2॥
Meaning
തവ - Thy; നാമ-കഥാ-രതാഃ - name and deeds always immersed in; സമം സുദൃശഃ - (they) all beautiful eyed (girls); പ്രാതഃ-ഉപാഗതാ - in the morning reaching; നദീമ് - the river; ഉപഹാര്-ശതൈഃ- - with hundreds of offerings; അപൂജയന് - worshipping (prayed); ദയിതഃ നംദസുതഃ - (that) husband, the son of Nanda; ഭവേത്-ഇതി - may become, thus;
Translation
All the beautiful girls were always immersed in chanting Thy name and narrating Thy deeds. In the morning they would go to the river and worship goddess Girijaa with hundreds of offerings and pray to her that Nanda's son, Krishna, may become their husband.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ഇതി മാസമുപാഹിതവ്രതാസ്തരലാക്ഷീരഭിവീക്ഷ്യ താ ഭവാന് ।
കരുണാമൃദുലോ നദീതടം സമയാസീത്തദനുഗ്രഹേച്ഛയാ ॥3॥
Meaning
ഇതി മാസമ്- - thus for one month; ഉപാഹിത-വ്രതാഃ- - having performed the vows; തരലാക്ഷീഃ- - the beautiful eyed (girls); അഭിവീക്ഷ്യ താഃ - seeing them; ഭവാന് - Thou; കരുണാ-മൃദുലഃ - by compassion moved; നദീതടം സമയാസീത്- - to the river bank went; തത്-അനുഗ്രഹ- - to bless them; ഇച്ഛയാ - desiring;
Translation
Thou were moved by compassion when Thou saw that the beautiful eyed girls had performed the vows for a month. With a desire to bless them Thou went to the river bank.
ശ്ലോകഃ
നിയമാവസിതൌ നിജാംബരം തടസീമന്യവമുച്യ താസ്തദാ ।
യമുനാജലഖേലനാകുലാഃ പുരതസ്ത്വാമവലോക്യ ലജ്ജിതാഃ ॥4॥
Meaning
നിയമ-അവസിതൌ - vows/observances being completed; നിജ-അംബരം - their clothes; തട-സീമനി- - on the river bank; അവമുച്യ താഃ- - leaving they; തദാ യമുനാ-ജല- - then in the Yamunaa waters; ഖേലന-ആകുലാഃ - to sport eager; പുരതഃ-ത്വാമ്- - in front Thee; അവലോക്യ - seeing; ലജ്ജിതാഃ - felt ashamed;
Translation
The observances of the vows being completed, they eagerly went to sport in the Yamunaa waters, leaving their robes behind, on the bank. Seeing Thee in front, they felt very ashamed.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ത്രപയാ നമിതാനനാസ്വഥോ വനിതാസ്വംബരജാലമംതികേ ।
നിഹിതം പരിഗൃഹ്യ ഭൂരുഹോ വിടപം ത്വം തരസാഽധിരൂഢവാന് ॥5॥
Meaning
ത്രപയാ - out of shame; നമിത-ആനനാസു- - with hung heads; അഥഃ വനിതാസു- - then (when) the girls; അംബര-ജാലമ്- - the heap of clothes; അംതികേ നിഹിതം - near by kept; പരിഗൃഹ്യ - taking away; ഭൂരുഹഃ വിടപമ് - a tree's branch; ത്വം തരസാ- - Thou quickly; അധിരൂഢവാന് - climbed up;
Translation
The girls stood with their heads hung in shame. Thou took away the heap of their clothes lying near by and quickly climbed up the branch of a tree.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ഇഹ താവദുപേത്യ നീയതാം വസനം വഃ സുദൃശോ യഥായഥമ് ।
ഇതി നര്മമൃദുസ്മിതേ ത്വയി ബ്രുവതി വ്യാമുമുഹേ വധൂജനൈഃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ഇഹ താവത്- - here then; ഉപേത്യ നീയതാം - coming take; വസനം വഃ - clothes you people; സുദൃശഃ - O beautiful eyed ones; യഥായഥം ഇതി - each her own, thus; നര്മ-മൃദു-സ്മിതേ - (with) a soft sweet smile; ത്വയി ബ്രുവതി - (when) Thou said; വ്യമുമുഹേ - they were confused; വധൂജനൈഃ - the girls;
Translation
Come here, O beautiful eyed ones! Take each one of you your clothes,' Thou said with a soft sweet smile. The girls were confused when they were asked to do so.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അയി ജീവ ചിരം കിശോര നസ്തവ ദാസീരവശീകരോഷി കിമ് ।
പ്രദിശാംബരമംബുജേക്ഷണേത്യുദിതസ്ത്വം സ്മിതമേവ ദത്തവാന് ॥7॥
Meaning
അയി ജീവ ചിരം - O may you live long; കിശോര - dear boy; നഃ-തവ ദാസീഃ- - we (are) Thy servants; അവശീ-കരോഷി കിമ് - teasing us why; പ്രദിശ-അംബരമ്- - give the clothes; അംബുജേക്ഷണ- - O Lotus eyed one!; ഇതി-ഉദിതഃ- - thus being told; ത്വം സ്മിതമ്-ഏവ - Thou smile only; ദത്തവാന് - gave;
Translation
O dear boy! May you live long. We are your hand maids. Why do you tease us thus? O Lotus eyed one! Give us our clothes.' Thus being told, Thou merely gave a smile.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അധിരുഹ്യ തടം കൃതാംജലീഃ പരിശുദ്ധാഃ സ്വഗതീര്നിരീക്ഷ്യ താഃ ।
വസനാന്യഖിലാന്യനുഗ്രഹം പുനരേവം ഗിരമപ്യദാ മുദാ ॥8॥
Meaning
അധിരുഹ്യ തടം - climbing up the bank; കൃതാംജലീഃ - with joined palms; പരിശുദ്ധാഃ - purified (at heart); സ്വഗതീഃ- - (in Thee) as the sole resort; നിരീക്ഷ്യ താഃ - seeing, them (as such); വസനാനി- - clothes; അഖിലാനി- - all; അനുഗ്രഹം - blessings; പുനഃ-ഏവം - again also; ഗിരമ്-അപി- - words (promise) also; അദാ മുദാ - gave (to them) with joy;
Translation
Thou saw that the girls had come up the bank with joined palms, that they were purified at heart and that they had surrendered to Thee as their sole resort.Thou with joy gave them back all their clothes and also words of promise as blessings.
ശ്ലോകഃ
വിദിതം നനു വോ മനീഷിതം വദിതാരസ്ത്വിഹ യോഗ്യമുത്തരമ് ।
യമുനാപുലിനേ സചംദ്രികാഃ ക്ഷണദാ ഇത്യബലാസ്ത്വമൂചിവാന് ॥9॥
Meaning
വിദിതം നനു - known indeed; വഃ മനീഷിതം - (is) your desire; വദിതാരഃ- - (I) will respond; തു-ഇഹ - surely here; യോഗ്യമ്-ഉത്തരമ് - proper (befitting) answer; യമുനാ-പുലിനേ - on the Yamunaa banks; സചംദ്രികാഃ - (in) moon lit; ക്ഷണദാഃ ഇതി- - nights, thus; അബലാഃ- - to the girls; ത്വമ്-ഊചിവാന് - Thou said;
Translation
Known indeed is your desire to me. I will surely give a proper response, in the moon lit nights on the sand banks of Yamunaa.' Thus Thou said to the girls.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ഉപകര്ണ്യ ഭവന്മുഖച്യുതം മധുനിഷ്യംദി വചോ മൃഗീദൃശഃ ।
പ്രണയാദയി വീക്ഷ്യ വീക്ഷ്യ തേ വദനാബ്ജം ശനകൈര്ഗൃഹം ഗതാഃ ॥10॥
Meaning
ഉപകര്ണ്യ - hearing; ഭവത്-മുഖ-ച്യുതം - from Thy mouth flowing; മധു-നിഷ്യംദി വചഃ - honey dripping words; മൃഗീദൃശഃ - the doe-eyed (girls); പ്രണയാത്-അയി - with love, O Lord!; വീക്ഷ്യ വീക്ഷ്യ - seeing again and again; തേ വദന്-ആബ്ജം - Thy lotus face; ശനകൈഃ-ഗൃഹം ഗതാഃ - slowly home went;
Translation
O Lord! The doe eyed girls heard Thy honey dripping words flowing from Thy mouth. Looking with love at Thy lotus face again and again they slowly went home.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ഇതി നന്വനുഗൃഹ്യ വല്ലവീർവിപിനാംതേഷു പുരേവ സംചരന് ।
കരുണാശിശിരോ ഹരേ ഹര ത്വരയാ മേ സകലാമയാവലിമ് ॥11॥
Meaning
ഇതി നനു- - thus indeed; അനുഗൃഹ്യ - blessing; വല്ലവീഃ- - the Gopikaas; വിപിന-അംതേഷു - in the forests; പുരാ-ഇവ സംചരന് - before like moving about; കരുണാശിശിരഃ - O Compassionate and cool; ഹരേ - O Hari!; ഹര ത്വരയാ - put an end to, soon; മേ സകല- - my all; ആമയാവലിമ് - host of ailments;
Translation
Thus Thou blessed the Gopikaas and continued to roam the woods as before. O Hari! With Thy such cooling compassion, quickly put an end to all my hosts of ailments.
