പൃഥോസ്തു നപ്താ പൃഥുധര്മകര്മഠഃ
പ്രാചീനബര്ഹിര്യുവതൌ ശതദ്രുതൌ ।
പ്രചേതസോ നാമ സുചേതസഃ സുതാ-
നജീജനത്ത്വത്കരുണാംകുരാനിവ ॥1॥
Meaning
പൃഥോഃ-തു നപ്താ - Prithu's great grand son; പൃഥു-ധര്മ-കര്മഠഃ - intensely performing righteous deeds; പ്രാചീനബര്ഹിഃ- - named Praacheenbarhi; യുവതൌ ശതദ്രുതൌ - through young Shatadruti; പ്രചേതസഃ നാമ - by the name of Prachetas; സുചേതസഃ സുതാന്- - pure minded sons (ten); അജീജനത്- - gave birth to; ത്വത്-കരുണാ-അംകുരാന്-ഇവ - like sprouts of Thy compassion embodied;
Translation
Prithu's great grand son Praacheenbarhis, who was reputed for his undertakings for the good of the world had the young lady Shatadruti for his wife. From her, as though sprouts of Thy compassion ,ten noble minded sons were born to him known by the group name of Prachetas.
ശ്ലോകഃ
പിതുഃ സിസൃക്ഷാനിരതസ്യ ശാസനാദ്-
ഭവത്തപസ്യാഭിരതാ ദശാപി തേ
പയോനിധിം പശ്ചിമമേത്യ തത്തടേ
സരോവരം സംദദൃശുര്മനോഹരമ് ॥2॥
Meaning
പിതുഃ സിസൃക്ഷാ-നിരതസ്യ - the father who was intent on creation; ശാസനാത്- - by his direction; ഭവത്-തപസ്യാ-അഭിരതാ ദശ-അപി തേ - those ten engrossed upon meditating on Thee; പയോനിധിം പശ്ചിമമ്-ഏത്യ - going to the western sea; തത്-തടേ സരോവരം സംദദൃശുഃ- - on its shore saw a lake; മനോഹരം - beautiful;
Translation
Commanded by their father to multiply the species, these ten brothers, being firm believers in the importance of Thy worship, went to the western sea to meditate. On the shore of that sea they saw a beautiful lake.
ശ്ലോകഃ
തദാ ഭവത്തീര്ഥമിദം സമാഗതോ
ഭവോ ഭവത്സേവകദര്ശനാദൃതഃ ।
പ്രകാശമാസാദ്യ പുരഃ പ്രചേതസാ-
മുപാദിശത് ഭക്തതമസ്തവ സ്തവമ് ॥3॥
Meaning
തദാ ഭവത്-തീര്ഥമ്-ഇദമ് - then this Thy holy lake; സമാഗതഃ ഭവഃ - frequented by Shiva; ഭവത്-സേവക-ദര്ശന-ആദൃതഃ - eager to see Thy devotees; പ്രകാശമ്-ആസാദ്യ - manifested himself; പുരഃ പ്രചേതസാമ്- - before the Prachetas; ഉപാദിശത് - and taught; ഭക്തതമഃ- - (himself) a great devotee to (Thee); തവ സ്തവം - Thy great hymn;
Translation
Then, Thy greatest devotee, Lord Shiva who is always eager to see Thy devotees, came to this holy lake of Thine and appearing before the Prachetaas, taught them a great hymn in praise of Thee.
ശ്ലോകഃ
സ്തവം ജപംതസ്തമമീ ജലാംതരേ
ഭവംതമാസേവിഷതായുതം സമാഃ ।
ഭവത്സുഖാസ്വാദരസാദമീഷ്വിയാന്
ബഭൂവ കാലോ ധ്രുവവന്ന ശീഘ്രതാ ॥4॥
Meaning
സ്തവം ജപംതഃ-തമ്-അമീ - that hymn singing, these (Prachetaas); ജല-അംതരേ - in the water; ഭവംതമ്-ആസേവിഷത- - on Thee meditated; അയുതം സമാഃ - for ten thousand years; ഭവത്-സുഖ-ആസ്വാദ്-രസാത്- - because of the joy they were experiencing in meditating on Thee; അമീഷു- - for them; ഇയാന് ബഭൂവ കാലഃ - such a long time passed; ധ്രുവവത്-ന ശീഘ്രതാ - like Dhruva it did not happen quickly;
Translation
These devotees chanting the hymn, spent ten thousand years in water, in Thy worship and meditation on Thee. For the attainment of the bliss of Thy realisation, they had to spend this long period in austerities unlike Dhruva who got it very quickly.
ശ്ലോകഃ
തപോഭിരേഷാമതിമാത്രവര്ധിഭിഃ
സ യജ്ഞഹിംസാനിരതോഽപി പാവിതഃ ।
പിതാഽപി തേഷാം ഗൃഹയാതനാരദ-
പ്രദര്ശിതാത്മാ ഭവദാത്മതാം യയൌ ॥5॥
Meaning
തപോഭിഃ-ഏഷാമ്- - by their penance; അതി-മാത്ര-വര്ധിഭിഃ - which was increasing in intensity; സ യജ്ഞ-ഹിംസാ-നിരതഃ-അപി - he, though engaged in killing animals for the sacrifices; പാവിതഃ - became purified; പിതാ-അപി തേഷാം - (he) their father; ഗൃഹയാത-നാരദ- - (to whose) house Naarada went; പ്രദര്ശിത-ആത്മാ - (from Naarada) obtaining the knowledge of Aatman; ഭവത്-ആത്മതാം യയൌ - attained to Thee;
Translation
By the increasing strength of their penance, their father Praacheenbarhis also became purified who had slain many animals in the sacrificial fires. Naarada who had gone to his house, gave him the knowledge of Aatman by which he attained a form like Thine.
ശ്ലോകഃ
കൃപാബലേനൈവ പുരഃ പ്രചേതസാം
പ്രകാശമാഗാഃ പതഗേംദ്രവാഹനഃ ।
വിരാജി ചക്രാദിവരായുധാംശുഭി-
ര്ഭുജാഭിരഷ്ടാഭിരുദംചിതദ്യുതിഃ ॥6॥
Meaning
കൃപാ-ബലേന-ഏവ - by Thy compassion alone; പുരഃ പ്രചേതസാം - before the Prachetas; പ്രകാശമ്-ആഗാഃ - Thou manifested Thyself; പതഗേംദ്ര-വാഹനഃ - having Garuda as vehicle; വിരാജി ചക്ര-ആദി-വര-ആയുധ-അംശുഭിഃ- - lustrous by the resplendent discus and other divine weapons; ഭുജാഭിഃ-അഷ്ടാഭിഃ- - glorious with eight arms; ഉദംചിത-ദ്യുതിഃ - spreading lustre;
Translation
By virtue of Thy compassion alone, Thou appeared before the Prachetas. Thou were seated on Thy vehicle Garuda, having eight arms, holding the resplendent discus and other divine weapons and spreading lustre all around.
ശ്ലോകഃ
പ്രചേതസാം താവദയാചതാമപി
ത്വമേവ കാരുണ്യഭരാദ്വരാനദാഃ ।
ഭവദ്വിചിംതാഽപി ശിവായ ദേഹിനാം
ഭവത്വസൌ രുദ്രനുതിശ്ച കാമദാ ॥7॥
Meaning
പ്രചേതസാം താവത്- - to the Prachetas, then; അയാചതാമ്-അപി - though unsought for; ത്വമ്-ഏവ കാരുണ്യ-ഭരാത്- - Thou Thyself out of infinite compassion; വരാന്-അദാഃ - gave boons; ഭവത്-വിചിംതാ-അപി - even the thought of Thee; ശിവായ ദേഹിനാം ഭവതു- - may be for the benefit of the humans; അസൌ രുദ്രനുതിഃ-ച - this Rudra hymn also; കാമദാ (ഭവതു) - may be a fulfiller of desires;
Translation
Out of Thy infinite compassion, Thou gave the Prachetas boons,even without their asking. May even Thy thought be for the benefit of the humans and confer welfare on them, and may the Rudra hymn be the fulfiller of all desires.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അവാപ്യ കാംതാം തനയാം മഹീരുഹാം
തയാ രമധ്വം ദശലക്ഷവത്സരീമ് ।
സുതോഽസ്തു ദക്ഷോ നനു തത്ക്ഷണാച്ച മാം
പ്രയാസ്യഥേതി ന്യഗദോ മുദൈവ താന് ॥8॥
Meaning
അവാപ്യ കാംതാം - getting as wife; തനയാം മഹീരുഹാം - the daughter of the trees; തയാ രമധ്വം - with her enjoy; ദശലക്ഷ-വത്സരീമ് - for ten lakhs of years; സുതഃ-അസ്തു ദക്ഷഃ - may you have a son named Daksha; നനു തത്-ക്ഷണാത്- - immediately then; ച മാം പ്രയാസ്യഥ-ഇതി - attain me also, thus; ന്യഗദഃ - saying so; മുദാ-ഏവ താന് - pleasingly to them;
Translation
Being highly pleased with the Prachetas Thou blessed them that they would get the daughter of the trees as their wife. They would lead a happy life with her for ten lakh of years. Also that they would have a son named Daksha and soon thereafter they would attain Thee.
ശ്ലോകഃ
തതശ്ച തേ ഭൂതലരോധിനസ്തരൂന്
ക്രുധാ ദഹംതോ ദ്രുഹിണേന വാരിതാഃ ।
ദ്രുമൈശ്ച ദത്താം തനയാമവാപ്യ താം
ത്വദുക്തകാലം സുഖിനോഽഭിരേമിരേ ॥9॥
Meaning
തതഃ-ച തേ - then they (the trees); ഭൂ-തല-രോധിനഃ-തരൂന് - which were covering the whole surface of the earth, the trees,; ക്രുധാ ദഹംതഃ - burning (the trees) in anger; ദ്രുഹിണേന വാരിതാഃ - were stopped by Brahmaa; ദ്രുമൈഃ-ച ദത്താം തനയാമ്- - the trees gave their daughter; അവാപ്യ താം - (they) getting her; ത്വത്-ഉക്ത-കാലം - for the duration mentioned by Thee; സുഖിനഃ-അഭിരേമിരേ - they lived happily;
Translation
Then the Prachetas who were angered by the dense growth of the trees which were covering the surface of the whole earth and causing obstruction, started to burn them. They were dissuaded by Brahmaa to do so. Obligingly the trees gave them their daughter in marriage and they lived with her happily for the time specified by Thee.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അവാപ്യ ദക്ഷം ച സുതം കൃതാധ്വരാഃ
പ്രചേതസോ നാരദലബ്ധയാ ധിയാ ।
അവാപുരാനംദപദം തഥാവിധ-
സ്ത്വമീശ വാതാലയനാഥ പാഹി മാമ് ॥10॥
Meaning
അവാപ്യ ദക്ഷം ച സുതം - and getting the son named Daksha; കൃത-അധ്വരാഃ - (and) having performed Brahma Satra; പ്രചേതസഃ - the Prachetas; നാരദ-ലബ്ധയാ ധിയാ - with the knowledge received from Naarada; അവാപുഃ-ആനംദ-പദം - attained the state of bliss; തഥാ-ബിധഃ-ത്വമ്- - Thou who are thus; ഈശ - O Lord!; വാതാലയനാഥ - Lord of Guruvaayur!; പാഹി മാമ് - protect me.;
Translation
After begetting the son Daksha and performing several sacrificial rites and having received the highest knowledge from Naarada they attained liberation. O Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are of such merciful nature, grant protection to me.
