ഇതി ത്വയി രസാകുലം രമിതവല്ലഭേ വല്ലവാഃ
കദാപി പുരമംബികാമിതുരംബികാകാനനേ ।
സമേത്യ ഭവതാ സമം നിശി നിഷേവ്യ ദിവ്യോത്സവം
സുഖം സുഷുപുരഗ്രസീദ്വ്രജപമുഗ്രനാഗസ്തദാ ॥1॥
Meaning
ഇതി ത്വയി - in this manner (when) Thou; രസ-ആകുലം - in bliss immersed; രമിത-വല്ലഭേ - were entertaining the Gopikaas; വല്ലവാഃ കദാപി - (at that time) the Gopas once; പുരമ്-അംബികാ-കമിതുഃ- - (to) the temple of Ambikaa's husband (Shiva); അംബികാ-കാനനേ - in the Ambika (named) forest; സമേത്യ ഭവതാ സമം - going along with Thee; നിശി നിഷേവ്യ - in the night having performed; ദിവ്യ-ഉത്സവം - the divine festival; സുഖം സുഷുപുഃ- - happily slept; അഗ്രസീത്-വ്രജപമ്- - swallowed Nanda Gopa; ഉഗ്രനാഗഃ-തദാ - a fierce snake then;
Translation
In this manner, as Thou were entertaining the Gopikaas and they were immersed in bliss, the Gopas went to the temple of Lord Shiva, Ambikaa's (Paarvati's) husband. Thou went along with them to the temple which was in the forest named Ambikaa. After the divine festival had been performed, they all slept happily in the night. Then a fierce snake swallowed Nanda Gopa.

സമുന്മുഖമഥോല്മുകൈരഭിഹതേഽപി തസ്മിന് ബലാ-
ദമുംചതി ഭവത്പദേ ന്യപതി പാഹി പാഹീതി തൈഃ ।
തദാ ഖലു പദാ ഭവാന് സമുപഗമ്യ പസ്പര്ശ തം
ബഭൌ സ ച നിജാം തനും സമുപസാദ്യ വൈദ്യധരീമ് ॥2॥
Meaning
സമുന്മുഖമ്- - who was looking up; അഥ-ഉല്മുകൈഃ- - then with burning logs of wood; അഭിഹതേ-അപി-തസ്മിന് - being thrashed even, he; ബലാത്-അമുംചതി - from his hold did not release; ഭവത്-പദേ ന്യപതി - on Thy feet fell (the Gopas); പാഹി പാഹി-ഇതി തൈഃ - save save, thus by them (was said); തദാ ഖലു - then indeed; പദാ ഭവാന് - by foot Thou; സമുപഗമ്യ - going near; പസ്പര്ശ തം - touched him; ബഭൌ സ ച - became he and; നിജാം തനും - his own body; സമുപസാദ്യ - attaining; വൈദ്യധരീമ് - Vidyaadharee (form);
Translation
The fierce snake was looking up. In spite of being thrashed with burning logs of wood, it did not loose hold of his prey. The Gopas fell on Thy feet and prayed for protection. Then indeed Thou went near and touched him with Thy foot, and he became his own body and attained the former form of Vidyaadharee.

സുദര്ശനധര പ്രഭോ നനു സുദര്ശനാഖ്യോഽസ്മ്യഹം
മുനീന് ക്വചിദപാഹസം ത ഇഹ മാം വ്യധുർവാഹസമ് ।
ഭവത്പദസമര്പണാദമലതാം ഗതോഽസ്മീത്യസൌ
സ്തുവന് നിജപദം യയൌ വ്രജപദം ച ഗോപാ മുദാ ॥3॥
Meaning
സുദര്ശനധര പ്രഭോ - Wielder of Sudarshana, O Lord!; നനു സുദര്ശന-ആഖ്യഃ- - indeed Sudarshana named; അസ്മി-അഹം - am I; മുനീന് ക്വചിത്- - the sages once; അപാഹസം - (I) ridiculed; തേ-ഇഹ മാം - they here me; വ്യധുഃ-വാഹസമ് - made a python; ഭവത്-പദ- - Thy feet; സമര്പണാത്- - by contact; അമലതാം ഗതഃ-അസ്മി - purification reached (have) I; ഇതി-അസൌ സ്തുവന് - thus he praising; നിജപദം യയൌ - (to) his own abode went; വ്രജപദം ച - and to Vraja; ഗോപാ മുദാ - the Gopas (went) happily;
Translation
O Lord! Wielder of Sudarshana! I am Sudarshana by name. Having sinned the sages for ridiculing them, they cursed me to remain here as a python. I have reached purification by the touch of Thy feet.' Thus praising Thee, he went back to his abode, while the Gopas also happily returned to Vraja.

കദാപി ഖലു സീരിണാ വിഹരതി ത്വയി സ്ത്രീജനൈ-
ര്ജഹാര ധനദാനുഗഃ സ കില ശംഖചൂഡോഽബലാഃ ।
അതിദ്രുതമനുദ്രുതസ്തമഥ മുക്തനാരീജനം
രുരോജിഥ ശിരോമണിം ഹലഭൃതേ ച തസ്യാദദാഃ ॥4॥
Meaning
കദാപി ഖലു - once indeed; സീരിണാ വിഹരതി - with Balaraam strolling about; ത്വയി സ്ത്രീജനൈഃ- - when Thou were (and) with the women folk; ജഹാര ധനദ-അനുഗഃ - kidnapped, Kuber's emissary; സ കില - he indeed; ശംഖചൂഡഃ- - Shankhachooda; അബലാഃ - the women; അതിദ്രുതമ്- - very hastily; അനുദ്രുതഃ-തമ്-അഥ - (Thou) pursuing him, then; മുക്ത-നാരീ-ജനമ് - releasing the women folk; രുരോജിഥ - (Thou) killed him; ശിരോമണിമ് - (and) the crest pearl; ഹലഭൃതേ ച - to Balaraam and; തസ്യ-അദദാഃ - his (Shankhacooda's) gave;
Translation
Once indeed in Balaraam's company and with the women folk Thou were strolling about. Shankhachooda, an emissary of Kubera, kidnapped the women. Thou hastily pursued him and killed him and liberated the women. Thou gave the crest pearl of Shankhachooda to Thy brother Balaraam.

ദിനേഷു ച സുഹൃജ്ജനൈസ്സഹ വനേഷു ലീലാപരം
മനോഭവമനോഹരം രസിതവേണുനാദാമൃതമ് ।
ഭവംതമമരീദൃശാമമൃതപാരണാദായിനം
വിചിംത്യ കിമു നാലപന് വിരഹതാപിതാ ഗോപികാഃ ॥5॥
Meaning
ദിനേഷു ച - and all during the day; സുഹൃത്-ജനൈഃ-സഹ - with the friends; വനേഷു ലീലാപരം - in the forest engaged in play; മനോഭവ-മനോഹരം - enchanting Cupid; രസിത-വേണു- - lusciously, the flute's; നാദ-അമൃതമ് - notes flowing like nectar; ഭവംതമ്- - Thee; അമരീ-ദൃശാമ്- - to the celestial damsels' sight; അമൃത-പാരണാ-ദായിനം - nectar drink giving; വിചിംത്യ - thinking about (all this); കിമു ന-ആലപന് - what all did not lament; വിരഹ-താപിതാ - separation pangs suffering; ഗോപികാഃ - the Gopikaas;
Translation
During the day Thou were engaged in play with friends in the forest. Enchanting even Cupid, Thou played the flute with luscious notes flowing like nectar. Thy sight was like a drink of nectar to the eyes of the celestial damsels. Thinking about all this the Gopikaas suffered pangs of separation and what all lamentations did they not give in to.

ഭോജരാജഭൃതകസ്ത്വഥ കശ്ചിത് കഷ്ടദുഷ്ടപഥദൃഷ്ടിരരിഷ്ടഃ ।
നിഷ്ഠുരാകൃതിരപഷ്ഠുനിനാദസ്തിഷ്ഠതേ സ്മ ഭവതേ വൃഷരൂപീ ॥6॥
Meaning
ഭോജരാജ-ഭൃതകഃ- - Kamsaa's emissary; തു-അഥ കശ്ചിത് - then some one; കഷ്ട-ദുഷ്ട- - cruel and evil; പഥ-ദൃഷ്ടിഃ-അരിഷ്ടഃ - ways looking for, (named) Arishta; നിഷ്ഠുര-ആകൃതിഃ- - terrific in appearance; അപഷ്ഠു-നിനാദഃ- - (and) horrible bellowings; തിഷ്ഠതേ സ്മ ഭവതേ - stood before Thee; വൃഷരൂപീ - in the form of a bull;
Translation
Once, some emissary of Kansa, always looking for ways to do cruel and evil deeds, Arishta by name, terrific in appearance, bellowing horribly, in the form of a bull stood before Thee.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ശാക്വരോഽഥ ജഗതീധൃതിഹാരീ മൂര്തിമേഷ ബൃഹതീം പ്രദധാനഃ ।
പംക്തിമാശു പരിഘൂര്ണ്യ പശൂനാം ഛംദസാം നിധിമവാപ ഭവംതമ് ॥7॥
Meaning
ശാക്വരഃ-അഥ - (this) bull then; ജഗതീ-ധൃതി-ഹാരീ - (who was) the world's peace plunderer; മൂര്തിമ്-ഏഷ - in a form, he; ബൃഹതീം പ്രദധാനഃ - (which was) huge assumed; പംക്തിമ്-ആശു - the herd soon; പരിഘൂര്ണ്യ - driving away; പശൂനാം - of the cows; ഛംദസാം നിധിമ്- - of the Veda's repository (Thee); അവാപ ഭവംതമ് - approached Thee;
Translation
Then this bull who was the plunderer of the peace of the world, he assumed a form which was huge and driving away the herds of cows, soon approached Thee who are repository of Vedas.
ശ്ലോകഃ
തുംഗശൃംഗമുഖമാശ്വഭിയംതം സംഗൃഹയ്യ രഭസാദഭിയം തമ് ।
ഭദ്രരൂപമപി ദൈത്യമഭദ്രം മര്ദയന്നമദയഃ സുരലോകമ് ॥8॥
Meaning
തുംഗ-ശൃംഗ-മുഖമ്- - raising the horns and head; ആശു-അഭിയംതം - hastily rushing; സംഗൃഹയ്യ രഭസാത്- - catching swiftly; അഭിയം തമ് - fearlessly, him; ഭദ്ര-രൂപമ്-അപി - (who was) in an auspicious form, though; ദൈത്യമ്-അഭദ്രമ് - (he was) an Asura inauspicious; മര്ദയന്-അമദയഃ - killing, (Thou) delighted; സുരലോകമ് - the gods;
Translation
Raising his horns and head he was rushing hastily towards Thee. Thou caught hold of him swiftly and fearlessly who was an inauspicious Asura, though he was in an auspicious form of a bull. Thou then crushed him to death and so delighted the gods.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ചിത്രമദ്യ ഭഗവന് വൃഷഘാതാത് സുസ്ഥിരാഽജനി വൃഷസ്ഥിതിരുർവ്യാമ് ।
വര്ധതേ ച വൃഷചേതസി ഭൂയാന് മോദ ഇത്യഭിനുതോഽസി സുരൈസ്ത്വമ് ॥9॥
Meaning
ചിത്രമ്-അദ്യ - surprisingly now (today); ഭഗവന് - O Lord!; വൃഷ-ഘാതാത് - by the bull's killing; സുസ്ഥിരാ-അജനി - very firm has become; വൃഷ-സ്ഥിതിഃ- - the righteousness (Dharma's) status; ഉർവ്യാമ് - on the earth; വര്ധതേ ച - and is increasing; വൃഷ-ചേതസി - in Indra's mind; ഭൂയാന് മോദ - great joy; ഇതി-അഭിനുതഃ-അസി - thus praised were; സുരൈഃ-ത്വമ് - by the gods Thou;
Translation
"O Lord! It is amazing that today by the killing of the bull, the status of righteousness (Dharma) is strengthened on the earth. The great joy in Indra's mind is also enhanced." Thus Thou were praised by the gods.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ഔക്ഷകാണി പരിധാവത ദൂരം വീക്ഷ്യതാമയമിഹോക്ഷവിഭേദീ ।
ഇത്ഥമാത്തഹസിതൈഃ സഹ ഗോപൈര്ഗേഹഗസ്ത്വമവ വാതപുരേശ ॥10॥
Meaning
ഔക്ഷകാണി - O bulls; പരിധാവത ദൂരം - run away far; വീക്ഷ്യതാമ്- - see; അയമ്-ഇഹ- - this here; ഉക്ഷവിഭേദീ - the bull slayer; ഇത്ഥമ്-ആത്ത-ഹസിതൈഃ - thus making jokes; സഹ ഗോപൈഃ- - with the Gopas; ഗേഹഗഃ-ത്വമ്- - went home Thou; അവ വാതപുരേശ - save me O Lord of Guruvaayur;
Translation
O bulls! Run far away. See here is this slayer of bulls.' Thou went home with the Gopas who were joking in this manner. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Save me.
