ശ്ലോകഃ
ഉത്താനപാദനൃപതേര്മനുനംദനസ്യ
ജായാ ബഭൂവ സുരുചിര്നിതരാമഭീഷ്ടാ ।
അന്യാ സുനീതിരിതി ഭര്തുരനാദൃതാ സാ
ത്വാമേവ നിത്യമഗതിഃ ശരണം ഗതാഽഭൂത് ॥1॥

Meaning
ഉത്താനപാദ-നൃപതേഃ- - king Uttaanpaad's; മനു-നംദനസ്യ - who was the son of Manu; ജായാ ബഭൂവ സുരുചിഃ- - wife became Suruchi; നിതരാമ്-അഭീഷ്ടാ - extremely dear; അന്യാ സുനീതിഃ-ഇതി - the other (wife) named Suneeti; ഭര്തുഃ-അനാദൃതാ സാ - she was neglected by her husband; ത്വാമ്-ഏവ നിത്യമ്- - in Thee alone, who are eternal; അഗതിഃ-ശരണം - refuge of the helpless (she); ഗതാ-അഭൂത് - (in Thee) took refuge;

Translation
To the king Uttaanpaada, the son of Manu, his wife Suruchi was extremely dear. The other wife Suneeti being ignored by her husband, was helpless and took shelter in Thee alone who are eternal refuge of the helpless.

ശ്ലോകഃ
അംകേ പിതുഃ സുരുചിപുത്രകമുത്തമം തം
ദൃഷ്ട്വാ ധ്രുവഃ കില സുനീതിസുതോഽധിരോക്ഷ്യന് ।
ആചിക്ഷിപേ കില ശിശുഃ സുതരാം സുരുച്യാ
ദുസ്സംത്യജാ ഖലു ഭവദ്വിമുഖൈരസൂയാ ॥2॥

Meaning
അംകേ പിതുഃ - on (his) father's lap; സുരുചി-പുത്രകമ്-ഉത്തമം തം - Suruchi's son, that Uttama,; ദൃഷ്ട്വാ ധ്രുവഃ കില - seeing Dhruva indeed; സുനീതി-സുതഃ-അധിരോക്ഷ്യന് - the son of Suneeti (who was) about to get up,; ആചിക്ഷിപേ കില ശിശുഃ - the child was severely scolded; സുതരാം സുരുച്യാ - as a result by Suruchi; ദുസ്സംത്യജാ ഖലു - indeed (jealousy) cannot be given up; ഭവത്-വിമുഖൈഃ- - by those who are not devoted to Thee; അസൂയാ - jealousy;

Translation
Seeing Uttama, Suruchi's son, seated on his father's lap, Suneeti's son Dhruva also tried to get up. But as a result, the child was severely scolded by Suruchi. Indeed, jealousy cannot be given up, by those who are not devoted to Thee.

ശ്ലോകഃ
ത്വന്മോഹിതേ പിതരി പശ്യതി ദാരവശ്യേ
ദൂരം ദുരുക്തിനിഹതഃ സ ഗതോ നിജാംബാമ് ।
സാഽപി സ്വകര്മഗതിസംതരണായ പുംസാം
ത്വത്പാദമേവ ശരണം ശിശവേ ശശംസ ॥3॥

Meaning
ത്വത്-മോഹിതേ പിതരി - being under the influence of Thy Maayaa, the father; പശ്യതി ദാര്-വശ്യേ - seeing hen-pecked; ദൂരം ദുരുക്തി-നിഹതഃ സഃ - he (Dhruva) was taken aback and hurt by the cruel words; ഗതഃ നിജ-അംബാമ് - (he) went to his own mother; സാ-അപി - she also; സ്വ-കര്മ-ഗതി-സംതരണായ - for getting over the effects of ones own actions; പുംസാം - for human beings; ത്വത്-പാദമ്-ഏവ ശരണം - Thy feet are the only refuge; ശിശവേ ശശംസ - (thus) she advised the child;

Translation
The hen-pecked king who was under the influence of Thy Maayaa, silently looked on as Dhruva was scolded by Suruchi. Hurt for being scolded, Dhruva then went to his own mother Suneeti who advised him that the only way to overcome the evils of ones own past actions is to seek shelter at Thy feet.

ശ്ലോകഃ
ആകര്ണ്യ സോഽപി ഭവദര്ചനനിശ്ചിതാത്മാ
മാനീ നിരേത്യ നഗരാത് കില പംചവര്ഷഃ ।
സംദൃഷ്ടനാരദനിവേദിതമംത്രമാര്ഗ-
സ്ത്വാമാരരാധ തപസാ മധുകാനനാംതേ ॥4॥

Meaning
ആകര്ണ്യ സഃ-അപി - hearing, he also; ഭവത്-അര്ചന-നിശ്ചിത-ആത്മാ - determined to devote himself to Thy worship; മാനീ നിരേത്യ നഗരാത് - he who had self respect, leaving the town; കില പംച-വര്ഷഃ - (though) indeed five years of age; സംദൃഷ്ട-നാരദ - meeting Naarada,; നിവേദിത-മംത്ര-മാര്ഗഃ- - and receiving instructions in the path of Mantra (japa); ത്വാമ്-ആരരാധ തപസാ - propitiated Thee by penance; മധു-കാനന-അംതേ - at the end of the forest named Madhu;

Translation
The self respecting Dhruva, who was only five years of age, hearing his mother's words, became determined to worship Thee, and so left the town. In the forest of Madhuvana, he propitiated Thee by penance, following the method of Mantra japa and the Mantra given to him by Naarada, whom he had met on the way.

ശ്ലോകഃ
താതേ വിഷണ്ണഹൃദയേ നഗരീം ഗതേന
ശ്രീനാരദേന പരിസാംത്വിതചിത്തവൃത്തൌ ।
ബാലസ്ത്വദര്പിതമനാഃ ക്രമവര്ധിതേന
നിന്യേ കഠോരതപസാ കില പംചമാസാന് ॥5॥

Meaning
താതേ വിഷണ്ണ-ഹൃദയേ - while the father was full of remorse,; നഗരീം ഗതേന ശ്രീനാരദേന - by Shri Naarada, who had gone to the town; പരിസാംത്വിത-ചിത്ത-വൃതൌ - (his) upset mind was consoled; ബാലഃ-ത്വത്-അര്പിത-മനാഃ - (meanwhile) the boy with his mind fixed on Thee; ക്രമ-വര്ധിതേന - with increasing; നിന്യേ കഠോര-തപസാ - intensity carried out severe penance; കില പംച-മാസാന് - indeed for five months;

Translation
The king who was full of remorse, was pacified and consoled by Naarada who had gone to the town. Dhruva, the boy with his mind fixed on Thee, spent five months in severe penance, with increasing intensity.

ശ്ലോകഃ
താവത്തപോബലനിരുച്ഛ്-വസിതേ ദിഗംതേ
ദേവാര്ഥിതസ്ത്വമുദയത്കരുണാര്ദ്രചേതാഃ ।
ത്വദ്രൂപചിദ്രസനിലീനമതേഃ പുരസ്താ-
ദാവിര്ബഭൂവിഥ വിഭോ ഗരുഡാധിരൂഢഃ ॥6॥

Meaning
താവത്-തപോ-ബല-നിരുച്ഛ്-വസിതേ - then,suffocated by the power of penance (of Dhruva); ദിഗംതേ - all the directions; ദേവ-അര്ഥിതഃ-ത്വമ്- - to the devas who were seeking relief, (to them) Thou; ഉദയത്-കരുണാ-ആര്ദ്ര-ചേതാഃ - with a mind surging with compassion; ത്വത്-രൂപ-ചിത്-രസ-നിലീന-മതേഃ - (Dhruva) whose mind was absorbed with the Supreme Consciousness Bliss, which had assumed Thy form; പുരസ്താത്- - in front ( of Dhruva); ആവിര്ബഭൂവിഥ - (Thou) appeared; വിഭോ - O Lord!; ഗരുഡ-അധിരൂഢഃ - mounted on Garuda;

Translation
Then, when all around in all the directions there was suffocation by the power of Dhruva's penance, the devas were seeking relief. Then, Thou surging with compassion, appeared seated on Garuda, in front of Dhruva, whose mind was absorbed in contemplation of the Supreme Consciousness Bliss which had assumed Thy form.

ശ്ലോകഃ
ത്വദ്ദര്ശനപ്രമദഭാരതരംഗിതം തം
ദൃഗ്ഭ്യാം നിമഗ്നമിവ രൂപരസായനേ തേ ।
തുഷ്ടൂഷമാണമവഗമ്യ കപോലദേശേ
സംസ്പൃഷ്ടവാനസി ദരേണ തഥാഽഽദരേണ ॥7॥

Meaning
ത്വത്-ദര്ശന - at the sight of Thee; പ്രമദ-ഭാര-തരംഗിതം തം - which completely overwhelmed him with waves of Bliss and ecstasy; ദൃഗ്ഭ്യാം നിമഗ്നമ്-ഇവ - as if his eyes were submerged; രൂപ-രസായനേ തേ - in the nectar of Thy entrancing form; തുഷ്ടൂഷമാണമ്- - desirous of singing Thy praise; അവഗമ്യ - understanding (Thou); കപോല-ദേശേ - on the cheek; സംസ്പൃഷ്ടവാന്-അസി - Thou did touch (him); ദരേണ - by the conch; തഥാ-ആദരേണ - and with great affection;

Translation
At Thy divine sight, Dhruva was completely overwhelmed and was full of the the waves of Bliss and ecstasy. As his eyes were submerged in the nectar of Thy entrancing form he was desirous of singing Thy praise. Realising his incapability of finding words, Thou with great affection touched his cheek with the conch.

ശ്ലോകഃ
താവദ്വിബോധവിമലം പ്രണുവംതമേന-
മാഭാഷഥാസ്ത്വമവഗമ്യ തദീയഭാവമ് ।
രാജ്യം ചിരം സമനുഭൂയ ഭജസ്വ ഭൂയഃ
സർവോത്തരം ധ്രുവ പദം വിനിവൃത്തിഹീനമ് ॥8॥

Meaning
താവത്- - then; വിബോധ-വിമലം - who had been cleansed of all taint by knowledge; പ്രണുവംതമ്-ഏനമ്- - who was profusely praising Thee; അഭാഷഥാഃ-ത്വമ്- - Thou did tell (him); അവഗമ്യ തദീയ-ഭാവമ് - knowing what he had in mind; രാജ്യം ചിരം സമനുഭൂയ - (that) after enjoying kingship for long; ഭജസ്വ ഭൂയഃ - attain, thereafter,; സർവോത്തരം ധ്രുവ പദം - the loftiest of status of Dhruva; വിനിവൃത്തി-ഹീനം - from which there is no return;

Translation
He then sang Thy praise profusely, having been purified and enlightened by pure knowledge. Knowing what he had in mind, Thou blessed him to enjoy the kingdom for long and then attain the loftiest of states, that of Dhruva, from where there is no return to lower states.

ശ്ലോകഃ
ഇത്യൂചിഷി ത്വയി ഗതേ നൃപനംദനോഽസാ-
വാനംദിതാഖിലജനോ നഗരീമുപേതഃ ।
രേമേ ചിരം ഭവദനുഗ്രഹപൂര്ണകാമ-
സ്താതേ ഗതേ ച വനമാദൃതരാജ്യഭാരഃ ॥9॥

Meaning
ഇതി-ഊചിഷി - having said so; ത്വയി ഗതേ - when Thou had gone away; നൃപനംദനഃ-അസൌ- - this prince; ആനംദിത-അഖില-ജനഃ - pleasing all the people; നഗരീമ്-ഉപേതഃ - reached the town; രേമേ ചിരം - enjoyed for a long time; ഭവത്-അനുഗ്രഹ-പൂര്ണ-കാമഃ- - with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace; താതേ ഗതേ ച വനമ്- - and when his father had gone to the forest; ആദൃത-രാജ്യ-ഭാരഃ - taking over the administration of the kingdom;

Translation
When Thou disappeared after having said so, this prince Dhruva came back to town delighting all people. When his father had gone to the forest, taking over the administration of the kingdom, with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace, he lived happily for a long time.

ശ്ലോകഃ
യക്ഷേണ ദേവ നിഹതേ പുനരുത്തമേഽസ്മിന്
യക്ഷൈഃ സ യുദ്ധനിരതോ വിരതോ മനൂക്ത്യാ ।
ശാംത്യാ പ്രസന്നഹൃദയാദ്ധനദാദുപേതാ-
ത്ത്വദ്ഭക്തിമേവ സുദൃഢാമവൃണോന്മഹാത്മാ ॥10॥

Meaning
യക്ഷേണ - by Yaksha; ദേവ - O Lord!; നിഹതേ പുനഃ- - being killed, then; ഉത്തമേ-അസ്മിന് - this Uttama (Dhruva's brother); യക്ഷൈഃ സ യുദ്ധ-നിരതഃ - he engaged in a fight with the Yakshas; വിരതഃ മനു-ഉക്ത്യാ - and withdrew on Manu's advice; ശാംത്യാ പ്രസന്ന-ഹൃദയാത്- - who was happy at the peaceful nature (of Dhruva); ധനദാത്-ഉപേതാത് - from Kuber who had approached him (Dhruva); ത്വത്-ഭക്തിമ്-ഏവ സുദൃഢാമ്- - Thy firm devotion alone; അവൃണോത്- - asked for as a boon; മഹാത്മാ - the great souled one (Dhruva);

Translation
When Uttama, Dhruva's brother was killed by Yaksha, Dhruva battled with Yaksha, but withdrew on Manu's advice. Pleased with Dhruva's peaceful nature, Kuber came and offered him a boon, but the great soul asked only for firm devotion to Thee.

ശ്ലോകഃ
അംതേ ഭവത്പുരുഷനീതവിമാനയാതോ
മാത്രാ സമം ധ്രുവപദേ മുദിതോഽയമാസ്തേ ।
ഏവം സ്വഭൃത്യജനപാലനലോലധീസ്ത്വം
വാതാലയാധിപ നിരുംധി മമാമയൌഘാന് ॥11॥

Meaning
അംതേ - finally; ഭവത്-പുരുഷ-നീത-വിമാന-യാതഃ - going in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants; മാത്രാ സമം - along with his mother; ധ്രുവപദേ മുദിതഃ-അയമ്-ആസ്തേ - (he) is living happily even now in Dhruvaloka; ഏവം - in this manner; സ്വ-ഭൃത്യ-ജന-പാലന-ലോല-ധീഃ-ത്വം - Thou who are ever eager minded to protect Thy devotees; വാതാലയാധിപ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; നിരുംധി - cure; മമ-ആമയ-ഔഘാന് - my hoards of ailments;

Translation
Finally, leaving along with his mother in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants, he is even now living happily in Dhruvaloka. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are ever intent on protecting Thy devotees, cure my hoards of ailments.
