സ്തംഭേ ഘട്ടയതോ ഹിരണ്യകശിപോഃ കര്ണൌ സമാചൂര്ണയ-
ന്നാഘൂര്ണജ്ജഗദംഡകുംഡകുഹരോ ഘോരസ്തവാഭൂദ്രവഃ ।
ശ്രുത്വാ യം കില ദൈത്യരാജഹൃദയേ പൂർവം കദാപ്യശ്രുതം
കംപഃ കശ്ചന സംപപാത ചലിതോഽപ്യംഭോജഭൂർവിഷ്ടരാത് ॥1॥
Meaning
സ്തംഭേ ഘട്ടയതഃ - (as he) was striking at the pillar; ഹിരണ്യകശിപോഃ - of Hiranyakashipu; കര്ണൌ സമാചൂര്ണയന്- - splitting the ears; ആഘൂര്ണത്-ജഗത്-അംഡ-കുംഡ-കുഹരഃ - making everything inside the vessel of Brahmaanda tremble; ഘോരഃ-തവ-അഭൂത്-രവഃ - (so) frightening was Thy roar; ശ്രുത്വാ യം കില - hearing which indeed; ദൈത്യരാജ ഹൃദയേ - in the heart of the Asura king; പൂർവം കദാപി-അശ്രുതം - (the roar) which had never been heard before; കംപഃ കശ്ചന സംപപാത - an indescribable trembling arose; ചലിതഃ-അപി-അംഭോജഭൂഃ- - shaken even was Brahmaa; വിഷ്ടരാത് - on his throne (in Satyaloka);
Translation
As Hiranyakashipu struck at the pillar, he heard a terrific sound which split his ears.Thy roar was so fierce that it made everything inside the vessel of Brahmaanda tremble. Hearing this sound which was never heard before, the Asura king felt an awesome and incredible shiver within. Even the lotus born Brahmaa was shaken from his throne.

ദൈത്യേ ദിക്ഷു വിസൃഷ്ടചക്ഷുഷി മഹാസംരംഭിണി സ്തംഭതഃ

Meaning
ദൈത്യേ ദിക്ഷു വിസൃഷ്ട-ചക്ഷുഷി - as the Asura with his eyes rolling all around; മഹാസംരംഭിണി - in great excitement; സ്തംഭതഃ സംഭൂതം - emerging from the pillar; ന മൃഗാത്മകം - (a form) neither of beast; ന മനുജാകാരം - nor of a human being; വപുഃ-തേ വിഭോ - Thy form O Lord! (seeing); കിം കിം ഭീഷണമ്-ഏതത്- - What o what this terrifying; അദ്ഭുതമ്-ഇതി - and wondrous (being) is, thus; വ്യുദ്ഭ്രാംത-ചിത്തേ-അസുരേ - when the Asura was in an agitated state of mind; വിസ്ഫൂര്ജത്- - expanding with; ധവല-ഉഗ്ര-രോമ- - white sharp hair; വികസത്-വര്ഷ്മാ - shining body; സമാജൃംഭഥാഃ - Thou grew up into;
Translation
As the Asura cast his eyes all around in great confused excitement, from the pillar emerged, O Lord! Thy form which was neither of a beast nor of a human being. While the Asura in an agitated state of mind wondered as to what this terrific wondrous being might be, Thou expanded into a form with a shining body on which sharp hair was bristling.

തപ്ത-സ്വര്ണ-സവര്ണ- - of molten gold in colour; ഘൂര്ണത്- - rolling; അതി-രുക്ഷ-ആക്ഷം - and very fierce eyes; സടാകേസര പ്രോത്കംപ- - the mane trembling; പ്രനികുംബിത്-അംബരമ്- - covering the skies; അഹോ ജീയത്- - O Hail! To it; തവ-ഇദം വപുഃ - Thy this form; വ്യാത്ത-വ്യാപ്ത-മഹാദരീ-സഖ-മുഖം - (with an) open wide cave like mouth; ഖഡ്ഗ-ഉഗ്ര-വല്ഗന്-മഹാ-ജിഹ്വാ-നിര്ഗമ - like the pointed end of a sword, huge and lolling out tongue; അദൃശ്യമാന-സുമഹാ-ദംഷ്ട്രായുഗ-ഉഡ്ഡാമരമ് - revealing a pair of huge molars extremely frightening;
Translation
O Hail unto that form of Thine with fierce rolling eyes shining like molten gold, with quivering mane overcastting the skies, with a wide open cave like mouth, with a sword like huge tongue lolling out, revealing a pair of huge extremely fierce molars.

Meaning
ഉത്സര്പത്-വലിഭംഗ- - the folds of the skin drawn upwards; ഭീഷണ-ഹനു - rendering the look of the chin fierce; ഹ്രസ്വ-സ്ഥവീയഃ-തര-ഗ്രീവം - short and very stout neck; പീവര-ദോശ്ശത-ഉദ്ഗത-നഖ- - of the stout hundred hands' nails, emitting; ക്രൂരാംശു-ദൂരോല്ബണം - most terrifying sharp rays; വ്യോമ-ഉല്ലംഘി - the skies outreaching; ഘനാഘന-ഉപമ-ഘന-പ്രധ്വാന- - the fierce roar like the thunder of a thick cloud; നിര്ധാവിത-സ്പര്ധാലു-പ്രകരം - driving away the host of rivals; നമാമി - I salute; ഭവതഃ-തത്-നാരസിംഹം വപുഃ - that form of Thine as Narasihma;
Translation
I salute Thy Man-Lion form with chin rendered forbidding due to the folds of the skin drawn upwards (while roaring), with a short stout neck, with a hundred powerful arms projecting ferocious lustrous claws, with a terrific burst of roaring voice, resounding the skies and driving away the hosts of rivals in fright.

Meaning
നൂനം വിഷ്ണുഃ-അയം - He must indeed be Vishnu!; നിഹന്മി-അമുമ്-ഇതി - I will kill him saying so; ഭ്രാമ്യത്-ഗദാ-ഭീഷണം - whirling a formidable mace; ദൈത്യേംദ്രം സമുപാദ്രവംതമ്- - the Asura king running towards Thee; അധൃഥാ ദോര്ഭ്യാം പൃഥുഭ്യാം-അമുമ് - (Thou) caught hold of him with two stout arms; വീരഃ നിര്ഗലിതഃ-അഥ - that clever (Asura) slipped out and then; ഖഡ്ഗ-ഫലകൌ ഗൃഹ്ണന്- - holding a sword and shield; വിചിത്ര-ശ്രമാന് വ്യാവൃണ്വന് - all kinds of astonishing feats displaying; പുനഃ-ആപപാത - again rushed; ഭുവന-ഗ്രാസ-ഉദ്യതം ത്വാമ്- - in a mood to swallow the whole universe, towards Thee; അഹോ - o what wonder;
Translation
The Asura king rushed towards Thee, whirling a formidable mace and saying that this must be Vishnu and that he would kill him. He was caught hold of by Thy two stout arms. The mighty Asura slipped out from Thy clutches. Then grabbing a sword and shield, he displayed astonishing feats of swordsmanship and rushed towards Thee, who were in a mood to swallow all the worlds. O what a wonder!

ഭ്രാമ്യംതം ദിതിജാധമം പുനരപി പ്രോദ്ഗൃഹ്യ ദോര്ഭ്യാം ജവാത്

Meaning
ഭ്രാമ്യംതം ദിതിജ-അധമമ് - the wicked Asura who was circling around; പുനഃ-അപി - once again; പ്രോദ്ഗൃഹ്യ ദോര്ഭ്യാം ജവാത് - catching with two hands quickly; ദ്വാരേ-അഥ-ഉരുയുഗേ നിപാത്യ - at the doorway, then,on the two thighs throwing; നഖരാന് വ്യുത്ഖായ വക്ഷോഭുവി - thrusting (Thy) nails on his chest and tearing; നിര്ഭിംദന്- - and tearing; അധി-ഗര്ഭ-നിര്ഭര-ഗലത്-രക്ത-അംബു - gushing out from within the blood fluid; ബദ്ധോത്സവം പായം പായമ്- - drinking and drinking with glee; ഉദൈരയഃ ബഹു - many times emitted; ജഗത്-സംഹാരി-സിംഹ-ആരവാന് - the universe destroying lion roars;
Translation
Catching hold of the wicked Asura quickly with two hands, who was circling around, Thou threw him flat on Thy lap in the doorway, deeply embedded Thy nails in his chest and tore it open. Thou then with great glee drank again and again the blood that gushed out of the Asura's body,fiercely roaring with lion roars which were powerful enough to shatter the whole universe.

Meaning
ത്യക്ത്വാ തം ഹതമ്- - leaving him who had been killed; ആശു - quickly; രക്ത-ലഹരീ-സിക്ത-ഉന്നമത്-വര്ഷ്മണി - bathed in blood with (Thy) gigantic body; പ്രത്യുത്പത്യ - leaping (and); സമസ്ത-ദൈത്യ-പടലീമ് - the entire host of Asuras; ച-ആഖാദ്യമാനേ ത്വയി - when being eaten by thee; ഭ്രാമ്യദ്-ഭൂമി - all the worlds whirled; വികംപിത-അംബുധികുലമ് - the oceans got turbulent; വ്യാലോല-ശൈല-ഉത്കരമ് - all the mountain ranges shook; പ്രോത്സ്രര്പത്-ഖചരമ് - scattered the stars and heavenly bodies; ചരാചരമ്- - (as well) all the animate and inanimate; അഹോ - O what a wonder!; ദുഃസ്ഥാമ്-അവസ്ഥാം ദധൌ - unbearable (chaotic state) overtook (prevailed);
Translation
Abandoning the dead Asura, Thou sprang up hastily with Thy gigantic body bathed in blood and started eating up the entire host of Asuras. O What a wonder! All the worlds whirled, the oceans got turbulent, the mountains trembled, the stars and celestial luminaries and all animate and inanimate things got scattered. A state of total and unbearable chaos took over.

താവന്മാംസവപാകരാലവപുഷം ഘോരാംത്രമാലാധരം
ത്വാം മധ്യേസഭമിദ്ധകോപമുഷിതം ദുർവാരഗുർവാരവമ് ।

Meaning
താവത്- - then; മാംസ-വപാ-കരാല-വപുഷമ് - (with Thy) body terrific being smeared with flesh and fat; ഘോര-അംത്ര-മാലാ-ധരമ് - a frightening garland of intestines wearing; ത്വാം മധ്യേ-സഭമ്- - Thee in the midst of the assembly; ഇദ്ധ-കോപമ്-ഉഷിതമ് - sitting in great anger; ദുർവാര-ഗുർവാ-രവമ് - (emitting) unbearable fierce roars; അഭ്യേതും ന ശശാക - could not approach (Thee); കഃ-അപി ഭുവനേ - anyone in the world; ദൂരേ സ്ഥിതാ ഭീരവഃ സർവേ - standing far away everyone was afraid; ശർവ-വിരിംച-വസവമുഖാഃ - Shiva, Brahmaan Indra, and others; പ്രത്യേകമ്-അസ്തോഷത - each one praised (and tried to pacify) Thee;
Translation
Thou sat in the assemblage roaring again and again in great wrath with Thy body forbiddingly terrific being smeared with flesh and fat and garlanded by the intestines (of Hiranyakashipu). Overwhelmed with awe no one dared to approach Thee, and stood far away. Even Shiva, Brahmaa, Indra and others kept at a distance, singing Thy praises individually (and tried to pacify Thee).

ഭൂയോഽപ്യക്ഷതരോഷധാമ്നി ഭവതി ബ്രഹ്മാജ്ഞയാ ബാലകേ
പ്രഹ്ലാദേ പദയോര്നമത്യപഭയേ കാരുണ്യഭാരാകുലഃ ।
ശാംതസ്ത്വം കരമസ്യ മൂര്ധ്നി സമധാഃ സ്തോത്രൈരഥോദ്ഗായത-
സ്തസ്യാകാമധിയോഽപി തേനിഥ വരം ലോകായ ചാനുഗ്രഹമ് ॥9॥
Meaning
ഭൂയഃ-അപി- - even then; അക്ഷത-രോഷ-ധാമ്നി - still in an abode of unabated rage; ഭവതി - (when) Thou were; ബ്രഹ്മാ-ആജ്ഞയാ - by Brahmaa's instruction; ബാലകേ പ്രഹ്ലാദേ പദയോഃ-നമതി - when the boy Prahlaada prostrated at Thy feet; അപഭയേ - without any fear; കാരുണ്യ-ഭാര-ആകുലഃ - overwhelmed with extreme compassion; ശാംതഃ-ത്വം - calmed Thou; കരമ-അസ്യ മൂര്ധ്നി സമധാഃ - Thy hand on his head, placed; സ്തോത്രൈഃ-അഥ-ഉദ്ഗായതഃ-തസ്യ - who was loudly singing Thy praise, then, to him; അകാമമ്-ധിയഃ-അപി - though he did not have any desire; തേനിഥ വരം - (Thou) gave a boon; ലോകായ ച-അനുഗ്രഹമ് - (which was) also for the good of the world;
Translation
Even then, when Thou were still in a state of unabated rage, by Brahmaa's instruction the boy Prahlaad free of fear prostrated at Thy feet. Thou calmed down being overcome by love and compassion and placed Thy hand on Prahlaad's head. He burst into a hymn in praise of Thee and unasked for received a boon from Thee which was for the benefit of the whole world.

ഏവം നാടിതരൌദ്രചേഷ്ടിത വിഭോ ശ്രീതാപനീയാഭിധ-
ശ്രുത്യംതസ്൞ഉടഗീതസർവമഹിമന്നത്യംതശുദ്ധാകൃതേ ।

Meaning
ഏവം - in this way; നാടിത-രൌദ്ര-ചേഷ്ടിത - Thou enacted a drama of ferocity; വിഭോ - O All Pervading Lord!; ശ്രീതാപനീയ-അഭിധ-ശ്രുതി-അംതസ്൞ഉട- - as described in the Shruti named Shri Taapaneeya; ഗീത-സർവ-മഹിമന്- - and all the hymns singing Thy excellences; അത്യംത-ശുദ്ധ-ആകൃതേ - O Thee! Who are absolutely pure (free from anger); തത്-താദൃക്-നിഖില-ഉത്തരമ് - Thee who are superseding everything else; പുനഃ-അഹോ - again, O Lord!; കഃ-ത്വാം പരഃ ലംഘയേത് - Who can overcome (outshine) Thee; പ്രഹ്ലാദപ്രിയേ - O Beloved of Prahlaad!; ഹേ മരുത്പുരപതേ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; സർവ-ആമയാത്-പാഹി മാമ് - be pleased to cure me of all my ailments;
Translation
In this way Thou enacted a drama of ferocity. O All Pervading Lord! As described in the Shruti named Taapaneeya, as per the hymns of Thy excellences sung therein,Thou are absolutely pure and free from anger. Thou who are thus, superseding everything else, O Lord! who can overcome Thee? O Thou who are fond of Prahlaad! O Lord of Guruvaayur! be pleased to cure me of all my ailments.
