ശ്ലോകഃ
അയി ദേവ പുരാ കില ത്വയി സ്വയമുത്താനശയേ സ്തനംധയേ ।
പരിജൃംഭണതോ വ്യപാവൃതേ വദനേ വിശ്വമചഷ്ട വല്ലവീ ॥1॥
Meaning
അയി ദേവ - O Lord!; പുരാ കില - long ago indeed; ത്വയി സ്വയമ്- - (when) Thou by Thyself; ഉത്താനശയേ - while lying on the back; സ്തനംധയേ - and sucking at the breast (of Yashodaa); പരിജൃംഭണതഃ - by yawning; വ്യപാവൃതേ വദനേ - in Thy open mouth; വിശ്വമ്-അചഷ്ട - the universe, was seen; വല്ലവീ - by the cowherdess (Yashodaa);
Translation
O Lord! Once long ago, as Thou were lying flat on the back, in the lap of Yashodaa and sucking at her breast, Thou yawned. As Thou did so, in Thy open mouth, Thou revealed to her the whole universe.
ശ്ലോകഃ
പുനരപ്യഥ ബാലകൈഃ സമം ത്വയി ലീലാനിരതേ ജഗത്പതേ ।
ഫലസംചയവംചനക്രുധാ തവ മൃദ്ഭോജനമൂചുരര്ഭകാഃ ॥2॥
Meaning
പുനഃ-അപി-അഥ - again also; ബാലകൈഃ സമം - with the children; ത്വയി ലീലാ-നിരതേ - (when) Thou were engrossed in play; ജഗത്പതേ - O Lord of the Universe!; ഫല-സംചയ- - in collecting the fruits; വംചന-ക്രുധാ - being cheated and angered (the children); തവ മൃദ്-ഭോജനമ്- - Thy eating of sand; ഊചുഃ-അര്ഭകാഃ - reported the children;
Translation
O Lord of the Universe! Again once, as Thou were playing with other children, Thou cheated them in collecting fruits. Angered at this, they reported to Thy mother that Thou had eaten mud.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അയി തേ പ്രലയാവധൌ വിഭോ ക്ഷിതിതോയാദിസമസ്തഭക്ഷിണഃ ।
മൃദുപാശനതോ രുജാ ഭവേദിതി ഭീതാ ജനനീ ചുകോപ സാ ॥3॥
Meaning
അയി - O (Thou); തേ പ്രലയ-അവധൌ - Thee at the time of deluge; വിഭോ - O Lord!; ക്ഷിതി-തോയ-ആദി- - earth water etc; സമസ്ത-ഭക്ഷിണഃ - everything consuming; മൃദ്-ഉപാശനതഃ - by eating mud,; രുജാ ഭവേത്-ഇതി - sickness may be, thus; ഭീതാ ജനനീ - (Thy) frightened mother; ചുകോപ സാ - she became angry;
Translation
O Lord! At the time of the deluge Thou do consume everything earth water etc. Yet Thy mother was frightened that Thou may fall sick by eating mud and so she became angry.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അയി ദുർവിനയാത്മക ത്വയാ കിമു മൃത്സാ ബത വത്സ ഭക്ഷിതാ ।
ഇതി മാതൃഗിരം ചിരം വിഭോ വിതഥാം ത്വം പ്രതിജജ്ഞിഷേ ഹസന് ॥4॥
Meaning
അയി ദുർവിനയാത്മക - O naughty (one); ത്വയാ കിമു - by you was it; മൃത്സാ ബത - that mud indeed; വത്സ ഭക്ഷിതാ - O son, was eaten; ഇതി മാതൃഗിരം - such the words of Thy mother; ചിരം വിഭോ - for a long time O Lord; വിതഥാം ത്വം - as false, Thee; പ്രതിജജ്ഞിഷേ ഹസന് - asserted laughingly;
Translation
O you naughty one! Is it that you have eaten mud O son!' O Lord! These words of Thy mother, for a long time, Thou kept on denying and laughingly asserted that Thou had not done so.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അയി തേ സകലൈർവിനിശ്ചിതേ വിമതിശ്ചേദ്വദനം വിദാര്യതാമ് ।
ഇതി മാതൃവിഭര്ത്സിതോ മുഖം വികസത്പദ്മനിഭം വ്യദാരയഃ ॥5॥
Meaning
അയി തേ - O Boy! Of you; സകലൈഃ-വിനിശ്ചിതേ - by every one asserted; വിമതിഃ-ചേത്- - is, if disagreed; വദനം വിദാര്യതാമ് - mouth (please) open; ഇതി മാതൃ-വിഭര്ത്സിതഃ - thus by mother reprimanded; മുഖം വികസത്-പദ്മ-നിഭമ് - the mouth opening, lotus like; വ്യദാരയഃ - (Thou) opened;
Translation
O Boy! If you deny what all the others are saying, please open your mouth.' Thus reprimanded by Thy mother, Thou opened Thy mouth as a lotus in full bloom.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അപി മൃല്ലവദര്ശനോത്സുകാം ജനനീം താം ബഹു തര്പയന്നിവ ।
പൃഥിവീം നിഖിലാം ന കേവലം ഭുവനാന്യപ്യഖിലാന്യദീദൃശഃ ॥6॥
Meaning
അപി മൃല്-ലവ - even a mud trace; ദര്ശന-ഉത്സുകാം - eager to see; ജനനീം താം - to mother that; ബഹു തര്പയന്-ഇവ - very much trying to please as though,; പൃഥിവീം നിഖിലാം - the earth whole; ന കേവലം - not only; ഭുവനാന്-അപി- - the other worlds also; അഖിലാന്-അദീദൃശഃ - entirely showed;
Translation
Thy mother was eager to see just a trace of mud in Thy mouth. As though to please her, and to give her abundant satisfaction Thou showed her in Thy mouth not only this whole earth but the entire universe.
ശ്ലോകഃ
കുഹചിദ്വനമംബുധിഃ ക്വചിത് ക്വചിദഭ്രം കുഹചിദ്രസാതലമ് ।
മനുജാ ദനുജാഃ ക്വചിത് സുരാ ദദൃശേ കിം ന തദാ ത്വദാനനേ ॥7॥
Meaning
കുഹചിത്-വനമ്- - somewhere the forests; അംബുധിഃ ക്വചിത് - the oceans somewhere; ക്വചിത്-അഭ്രം - somewhere the sky; കുഹചിത്-രസാതലമ് - somewhere the Rasaatala; മനുജാഃ ദനുജാഃ - human beings, demons; ക്വചിത് സുരാഃ - somewhere the devas; ദദൃശേ കിം ന - seen what not was; തദാ ത്വത്-ആനനേ - at that time in Thy mouth;
Translation
At that time, in Thy mouth what not was seen by Yashodaa? Somewhere the forests and oceans, somewhere the skies and Rasaatala, human beings and demons, gods and devas!
ശ്ലോകഃ
കലശാംബുധിശായിനം പുനഃ പരവൈകുംഠപദാധിവാസിനമ് ।
സ്വപുരശ്ച നിജാര്ഭകാത്മകം കതിധാ ത്വാം ന ദദര്ശ സാ മുഖേ ॥8॥
Meaning
കലശ-അംബുധി-ശായിനം - in the milk ocean, the recliner; പുനഃ പര-വൈകുംഠപദ- - as the Paramaatamaa, in the Vaikuntha abode; അധിവാസിനമ് - the resident; സ്വ-പുരഃ-ച - in front of herself; നിജ-അര്ഭക-ആത്മകം - as her own son; കതിധാ - in how many ways; ത്വാം ന ദദര്ശ - Thee did not see; സാ മുഖേ - she in (Thy) mouth;
Translation
Yashodaa saw in Thy mouth the recliner in the milk ocean. Again she saw Paramaatamaa, the resident of the Vaikunth abode. Then she saw Thee as her son in front of her. In how many different ways did she not see Thee.
ശ്ലോകഃ
വികസദ്ഭുവനേ മുഖോദരേ നനു ഭൂയോഽപി തഥാവിധാനനഃ ।
അനയാ സ്ഫുടമീക്ഷിതോ ഭവാനനവസ്ഥാം ജഗതാം ബതാതനോത് ॥9॥
Meaning
വികസത്-ഭുവനേ - revealing the worlds; മുഖ-ഉദരേ - in the inside of the mouth; നനു ഭൂയഃ-അപി - indeed then again also; തഥാ-വിധ-ആനനഃ - that same type of face; അനയാ സ്ഫുടമ്-ഈക്ഷിതഃ - by her was clearly seen; ഭവാന്-അനവസ്ഥാം - Thou as the infinitude; ജഗതാം - of the universe; ബത്-ആതനോത് - definitely expounded;
Translation
In the cavity of Thy mouth she saw all the worlds, where even Thou were present with Thy mouth open, once again, in which again all the worlds were seen; and so on endlessly. This definitely expounded Thou as the infinitude of the universe.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ധൃതതത്ത്വധിയം തദാ ക്ഷണം ജനനീം താം പ്രണയേന മോഹയന് ।
സ്തനമംബ ദിശേത്യുപാസജന് ഭഗവന്നദ്ഭുതബാല പാഹി മാമ് ॥10॥
Meaning
ധൃത-തത്ത്വ-ധിയം - holding the reality in the mind; തദാ ക്ഷണം - at that time for a moment; ജനനീം താം - to the mother; പ്രണയേന മോഹയന് - by affection enchanting (deluding); സ്തനമ്-അംബ ദിശ- - breast milk O Mother give'; ഇതി-ഉപാസജന് - thus embracing; ഭഗവന്- - O Lord!; അദ്ഭുത-ബാല - O Wonderful Child!; പാഹി മാമ് - protect me;
Translation
At that time for a moment, Yashodaa had a flash of illumination. Thou with affection deluded her and clung to her, calling her 'Mother' and demanded to be suckled. O Lord! Thou the Wondrous Child! Deign to protect me.
