அர்ஜுன உவாச
ஏவம் ஸததயுக்தா யே ப⁴க்தாஸ்த்வாம் பர்யுபாஸதே ।
யே சாப்யக்ஷரமவ்யக்தம் தேஷாம் கே யோக³வித்தமா: ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning
அர்ஜுன: உவாச — Arjuna said; ஏவம் — thus; ஸதத — always; யுக்தா: — engaged; யே — those who; ப⁴க்தா: — devotees; த்வாம் — You; பர்யுபாஸதே — properly worship; யே — those who; ச — also; அபி — again; அக்ஷரம் — beyond the senses; அவ்யக்தம் — the unmanifested; தேஷாம் — of them; கே — who; யோக-³வித்-தமா: — the most perfect in knowledge of yoga.
Translation
Arjuna inquired: Which are considered to be more perfect, those who are always properly engaged in Your devotional service or those who worship the impersonal Brahman, the unmanifested?
ஶ்லோக:
ஶ்ரீப⁴க³வானுவாச
மய்யாவேஶ்ய மனோ யே மாம் நித்யயுக்தா உபாஸதே ।
ஶ்ரத்³த⁴யா பரயோபேதாஸ்தே மே யுக்ததமா மதா: ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning
ஶ்ரீ-ப⁴க³வான் உவாச — the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; மயி — upon Me; ஆவேஶ்ய — fixing; மன: — the mind; யே — those who; மாம் — Me; நித்ய — always; யுக்தா: — engaged; உபாஸதே — worship; ஶ்ரத்³த⁴யா — with faith; பரயா — transcendental; உபேதா: — endowed; தே — they; மே — by Me; யுக்த-தமா: — most perfect in yoga; மதா: — are considered.
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Those who fix their minds on My personal form and are always engaged in worshiping Me with great and transcendental faith are considered by Me to be most perfect.
ஶ்லோக:
யே த்வக்ஷரமனிர்தே³ஶ்யமவ்யக்தம் பர்யுபாஸதே ।
ஸர்வத்ரக³மசிந்த்யம் ச கூடஸ்த²மசலம் த்⁴ருவம் ॥ 3 ॥
ஸன்னியம்யேந்த்³ரியக்³ராமம் ஸர்வத்ர ஸமபு³த்³த⁴ய: ।
தே ப்ராப்னுவந்தி மாமேவ ஸர்வபூ⁴தஹிதே ரதா: ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning
யே — those who; து — but; அக்ஷரம் — that which is beyond the perception of the senses; அனிர்தே³ஶ்யம் — indefinite; அவ்யக்தம் — unmanifested; பர்யுபாஸதே — completely engage in worshiping; ஸர்வத்ர-க³ம் — all-pervading; அசிந்த்யம் — inconceivable; ச — also; கூட-ஸ்த²ம் — unchanging; அசலம் — immovable; த்⁴ருவம் — fixed; ஸன்னியம்ய — controlling; இந்த்³ரிய-க்³ராமம் — all the senses; ஸர்வத்ர — everywhere; ஸம-பு³த்³த⁴ய: — equally disposed; தே — they; ப்ராப்னுவந்தி — achieve; மாம் — Me; ஏவ — certainly; ஸர்வ-பூ⁴த-ஹிதே — for the welfare of all living entities; ரதா: — engaged.
Translation
But those who fully worship the unmanifested, that which lies beyond the perception of the senses, the all-pervading, inconceivable, unchanging, fixed and immovable – the impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth – by controlling the various senses and being equally disposed to everyone, such persons, engaged in the welfare of all, at last achieve Me.
ஶ்லோக:
க்லஏஶோதி⁴கதரஸ்தேஷாமவ்யக்தாஸக்தசேதஸாம் ।
அவ்யக்தா ஹி க³திர்து³:க²ம் தே³ஹவத்³ப⁴இரவாப்யதே ॥ 5 ॥
Meaning
க்லேஶ: — trouble; அதி⁴க-தர: — very much; தேஷாம் — of them; அவ்யக்த — to the unmanifested; ஆஸக்த — attached; சேதஸாம் — of those whose minds; அவ்யக்தா — toward the unmanifested; ஹி — certainly; க³தி: — progress; து³:க²ம் — with trouble; தே³ஹ-வத்³பி⁴: — by the embodied; அவாப்யதே — is achieved.
Translation
For those whose minds are attached to the unmanifested, impersonal feature of the Supreme, advancement is very troublesome. To make progress in that discipline is always difficult for those who are embodied.
ஶ்லோக:
யே து ஸர்வாணி கர்மாணி மயி ஸன்ன்யஸ்ய மத்பரா: ।
அனந்யேனைவ யோகே³ன மாம் த்⁴யாயந்த உபாஸதே ॥ 6 ॥
தேஷாமஹம் ஸமுத்³த⁴ர்தா ம்ருத்யுஸம்ஸாரஸாக³ராத் ।
ப⁴வாமி ந சிராத்பார்த² மய்யாவேஶிதசேதஸாம் ॥ 7 ॥
Meaning
யே — those who; து — but; ஸர்வாணி — all; கர்மாணி — activities; மயி — unto Me; ஸன்ன்யஸ்ய — giving up; மத்-பரா: — being attached to Me; அனந்யேன — without division; ஏவ — certainly; யோகே³ன — by practice of such bhakti-yoga; மாம் — upon Me; த்⁴யாயந்த: — meditating; உபாஸதே — worship; தேஷாம் — of them; அஹம் — I; ஸமுத்³த⁴ர்தா — the deliverer; ம்ருத்யு — of death; ஸம்ஸார — in material existence; ஸாக³ராத் — from the ocean; ப⁴வாமி — I become; ந — not; சிராத் — after a long time; பார்த² — O son of Prithā; மயி — upon Me; ஆவேஶித — fixed; சேதஸாம் — of those whose minds.
Translation
But those who worship Me, giving up all their activities unto Me and being devoted to Me without deviation, engaged in devotional service and always meditating upon Me, having fixed their minds upon Me, O son of Prithā – for them I am the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death.
ஶ்லோக:
மய்யேவ மன ஆத⁴த்ஸ்வ மயி பு³த்³தி⁴ம் நிவேஶய ।
நிவஸிஷ்யஸி மய்யேவ அத ஊர்த்⁴வம் ந ஸம்ஶய: ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning
மயி — upon Me; ஏவ — certainly; மன: — mind; ஆத⁴த்ஸ்வ — fix; மயி — upon Me; பு³த்³தி⁴ம் — intelligence; நிவேஶய — apply; நிவஸிஷ்யஸி — you will live; மயி — in Me; ஏவ — certainly; அத: ஊர்த்⁴வம் — thereafter; ந — never; ஸம்ஶய: — doubt.
Translation
Just fix your mind upon Me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and engage all your intelligence in Me. Thus you will live in Me always, without a doubt.
ஶ்லோக:
அத² சித்தம் ஸமாதா⁴தும் ந ஶக்னோஷி மயி ஸ்தி²ரம் ।
அப்⁴யாஸயோகே³ன ததோ மாமிச்சா²ப்தும் த⁴னஞ்ஜய ॥ 9 ॥
Meaning
அத² — if, therefore; சித்தம் — mind; ஸமாதா⁴தும் — to fix; ந — not; ஶக்னோஷி — you are able; மயி — upon Me; ஸ்தி²ரம் — steadily; அப்⁴யாஸ-யோகே³ன — by the practice of devotional service; தத: — then; மாம் — Me; இச்சா — desire; ஆப்தும் — to get; த⁴னம்-ஜய — O winner of wealth, Arjuna.
Translation
My dear Arjuna, O winner of wealth, if you cannot fix your mind upon Me without deviation, then follow the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga. In this way develop a desire to attain Me.
ஶ்லோக:
அப்⁴யாஸேப்யஸமர்தோ²ஸி மத்கர்மபரமோ ப⁴வ ।
மத³ர்த²மபி கர்மாணி குர்வன்ஸித்³தி⁴மவாப்ஸ்யஸி ॥ 1௦ ॥
Meaning
அப்⁴யாஸே — in practice; அபி — even if; அஸமர்த:² — unable; அஸி — you are; மத்-கர்ம — My work; பரம: — dedicated to; பவ⁴ — become; மத்-அர்த²ம் — for My sake; அபி — even; கர்மாணி — work; குர்வன் — performing; ஸித்³தி⁴ம் — perfection; அவாப்ஸ்யஸி — you will achieve.
Translation
If you cannot practice the regulations of bhakti-yoga, then just try to work for Me, because by working for Me you will come to the perfect stage.
ஶ்லோக:
அதை²தத³ப்யஶக்தோஸி கர்தும் மத்³யோக³மாஶ்ரித: ।
ஸர்வகர்மப²லத்யாக³ம் தத: குரு யதாத்மவான் ॥ 11 ॥
Meaning
அத² — even though; ஏதத் — this; அபி — also; அஶக்த: — unable; அஸி — you are; கர்தும் — to perform; மத் — unto Me; யோக³ம் — in devotional service; ஆஶ்ரித: — taking refuge; ஸர்வ-கர்ம — of all activities; பல² — of the results; த்யாக³ம் — renunciation; தத: — then; குரு — do; யத-ஆத்ம-வான் — self-situated.
Translation
If, however, you are unable to work in this consciousness of Me, then try to act giving up all results of your work and try to be self-situated.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶ்ரேயோ ஹி ஜ்ஞானமப்⁴யாஸாஜ்ஜ்ஞானாத்³த்⁴யானம் விஶிஷ்யதே ।
த்⁴யானாத்கர்மப²லத்யாக³ஸ்த்யாகா³ச்சா²ந்திரனந்தரம் ॥ 12 ॥
Meaning
ஶ்ரேய: — better; ஹி — certainly; ஜ்ஞானம் — knowledge; அப்⁴யாஸாத் — than practice; ஜ்ஞானாத் — than knowledge; த்⁴யானம் — meditation; விஶிஷ்யதே — is considered better; த்⁴யானாத் — than meditation; கர்ம-ப²ல-த்யாக:³ — renunciation of the results of fruitive action; த்யாகா³த் — by such renunciation; ஶாந்தி: — peace; அனந்தரம் — thereafter.
Translation
If you cannot take to this practice, then engage yourself in the cultivation of knowledge. Better than knowledge, however, is meditation, and better than meditation is renunciation of the fruits of action, for by such renunciation one can attain peace of mind.
ஶ்லோக:
அத்³வேஷ்டா ஸர்வபூ⁴தானாம் மைத்ர: கருண ஏவ ச ।
நிர்மமோ நிரஹங்கார: ஸமது³:க²ஸுக:² க்ஷமீ ॥ 13 ॥
ஸந்துஷ்ட: ஸததம் யோகீ³ யதாத்மா த்³ருட⁴னிஶ்சய: ।
மய்யர்பிதமனோபு³த்³தி⁴ர்யோ மத்³ப⁴க்த: ஸ மே ப்ரிய: ॥ 14 ॥
Meaning
அத்³வேஷ்டா — nonenvious; ஸர்வ-பூ⁴தானாம் — toward all living entities; மைத்ர: — friendly; கருண: — kindly; ஏவ — certainly; ச — also; நிர்மம: — with no sense of proprietorship; நிரஹங்கார: — without false ego; ஸம — equal; து³:க² — in distress; ஸுக:² — and happiness; க்ஷமீ — forgiving; ஸந்துஷ்ட: — satisfied; ஸததம் — always; யோகீ³ — one engaged in devotion; யத-ஆத்மா — self-controlled; த்³ருட-⁴னிஶ்சய: — with determination; மயி — upon Me; அர்பித — engaged; மன: — mind; பு³த்³தி⁴: — and intelligence; ய: — one who; மத்-ப⁴க்த: — My devotee; ஸ: — he; மே — to Me; ப்ரிய: — dear.
Translation
One who is not envious but is a kind friend to all living entities, who does not think himself a proprietor and is free from false ego, who is equal in both happiness and distress, who is tolerant, always satisfied, self-controlled, and engaged in devotional service with determination, his mind and intelligence fixed on Me – such a devotee of Mine is very dear to Me.
ஶ்லோக:
யஸ்மான்னோத்³விஜதே லோகோ லோகான்னோத்³விஜதே ச ய: ।
ஹர்ஷாமர்ஷப⁴யோத்³வேகை³ர்முக்தோ ய: ஸ ச மே ப்ரிய: ॥ 15 ॥
Meaning
யஸ்மாத் — from whom; ந — never; உத்³விஜதே — are agitated; லோக: — people; லோகாத் — from people; ந — never; உத்³விஜதே — is disturbed; ச — also; ய: — anyone who; ஹர்ஷ — from happiness; அமர்ஷ — distress; பய⁴ — fear; உத்³வேகை³: — and anxiety; முக்த: — freed; ய: — who; ஸ: — anyone; ச — also; மே — to Me; ப்ரிய: — very dear.
Translation
He by whom no one is put into difficulty and who is not disturbed by anyone, who is equipoised in happiness and distress, fear and anxiety, is very dear to Me.
ஶ்லோக:
அனபேக்ஷ: ஶஉசிர்த³க்ஷ உதா³ஸீனோ க³தவ்யத:² ।
ஸர்வாரம்ப⁴பரித்யாகீ³ யோ மத்³ப⁴க்த: ஸ மே ப்ரிய: ॥ 16 ॥
Meaning
அனபேக்ஷ: — neutral; ஶுசி: — pure; த³க்ஷ: — expert; உதா³ஸீன: — free from care; க³த-வ்யத:² — freed from all distress; ஸர்வ-ஆரம்ப⁴ — of all endeavors; பரித்யாகீ³ — renouncer; ய: — anyone who; மத்-ப⁴க்த: — My devotee; ஸ: — he; மே — to Me; ப்ரிய: — very dear.
Translation
My devotee who is not dependent on the ordinary course of activities, who is pure, expert, without cares, free from all pains, and not striving for some result, is very dear to Me.

Translation
One who is equal to friends and enemies, who is equipoised in honor and dishonor, heat and cold, happiness and distress, fame and infamy, who is always free from contaminating association, always silent and satisfied with anything, who doesn’t care for any residence, who is fixed in knowledge and who is engaged in devotional service – such a person is very dear to Me.
ஶ்லோக:
யே து த⁴ர்மாம்ருதமித³ம் யதோ²க்தம் பர்யுபாஸதே ।
ஶ்ரத்³த³தா⁴னா மத்பரமா ப⁴க்தாஸ்தேதீவ மே ப்ரியா: ॥ 2௦ ॥

Translation
Those who follow this imperishable path of devotional service and who completely engage themselves with faith, making Me the supreme goal, are very, very dear to Me.
