த்வாமேகதா³ கு³ருமருத்புரனாத² வோடு⁴ம்
கா³டா⁴தி⁴ரூட⁴க³ரிமாணமபாரயந்தீ ।
மாதா நிதா⁴ய ஶயனே கிமித³ம் ப³தேதி
த்⁴யாயந்த்யசேஷ்டத க்³ருஹேஷு நிவிஷ்டஶங்கா ॥1॥
Meaning
த்வாம்-ஏகதா³ - Thee, once,; கு³ருமருத்புரனாத² - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; வோடு⁴ம் - to carry (Thee, who); கா³ட-⁴அதி⁴ரூட-⁴க³ரிமாணம்- - had very much increased in weight; அபாரயந்தீ மாதா - not being able (to carry), Thy mother (Yashoda); நிதா⁴ய ஶயனே - placing (Thee) on the bed; கிம்-இத³ம் ப³த-இதி - what is it indeed thus; த்⁴யாயந்தீ - thinking (of Thee); அசேஷ்டத க்³ருஹேஷு - performed (her duties) in the house; நிவிஷ்ட-ஶங்கா - overcome with doubt;
Translation
Once, O Lord of Guruvaayur! Thou who had very much increased in weight, Thy mother not being able to carry Thee, placed Thee on the bed. What indeed was the cause of this, thus overcome with misgivings, she kept busy carrying out her duties in the house. As she did so, she was constantly thinking of Thee and praying for Thy welfare.
ஶ்லோக:
தாவத்³விதூ³ரமுபகர்ணிதகோ⁴ரகோ⁴ஷ-
வ்யாஜ்ரும்பி⁴பாம்ஸுபடலீபரிபூரிதாஶ: ।
வாத்யாவபுஸ்ஸ கில தை³த்யவரஸ்த்ருணாவ-
ர்தாக்²யோ ஜஹார ஜனமானஸஹாரிணம் த்வாம் ॥2॥
Meaning
தாவத்-விதூ³ரம்- - then at a distance; உபகர்ணித-கோ⁴ர-கோ⁴ஷ- - was heard a terrific sound; வ்யாஜ்ரும்பி⁴-பாம்ஸுபடலீ- - (with the) rising and spreading of a thick dust; பரிபூரித-ஆஶ: - filling the quarters; வாத்யா-வபு:-ஸ - in the form of a whirl wind, he; கில தை³த்யவர:- - indeed, the famous Asura; த்ருணாவர்த-ஆக்²ய: - Trinaavarta by name; ஜஹார - carried away (Thee); ஜனமானஸ-ஹாரிணம் - of the peoples' mind carries away (the one who); த்வாம் - Thee;
Translation
Then the well known Asura Trinaavarta, came disguised as a whirl wind. All the quarters were filled with thick dust and a terrific sound arose and spread all around by the impact of his arrival. He carried Thee away, who carries away the minds of people.
ஶ்லோக:
உத்³தா³மபாம்ஸுதிமிராஹதத்³ருஷ்டிபாதே
த்³ரஷ்டும் கிமப்யகுஶலே பஶுபாலலோகே ।
ஹா பா³லகஸ்ய கிமிதி த்வது³பாந்தமாப்தா
மாதா ப⁴வந்தமவிலோக்ய ப்⁴ருஶம் ருரோத³ ॥3॥
Meaning
உத்³தா³ம-பாம்ஸு- - intense dust (causing); திமிர-ஆஹத- - darkness and so obstructing; த்³ருஷ்டி-பாதே - the vision (when it was so); த்³ரஷ்டும் கிம்-அபி- - to see anything at all; அகுஶலே - unable; பஶுபால-லோகே - (when) the cowherds were; ஹா பா³லகஸ்ய கிம்- - O what has happened to the child; இதி - thus (worrying); த்வத்-உபாந்தம்-ஆப்தா - near Thee approaching; மாதா ப⁴வந்தம்- - Thy mother, Thee; அவிலோக்ய - not seeing; ப்⁴ருஶம் ருரோத³ - loudly cried;
Translation
The immense dust caused intense darkness due to which the vision was obstructed. All the cowherds and everyone were unable to see anything. Thy mother was full of worry as to what had happened to Thee. She ran in distress towards Thee and not finding Thee at the spot, she began to wail and cry loudly.
ஶ்லோக:
தாவத் ஸ தா³னவவரோபி ச தீ³னமூர்தி-
ர்பா⁴வத்கபா⁴ரபரிதா⁴ரணலூனவேக:³ ।
ஸங்கோசமாப தத³னு க்ஷதபாம்ஸுகோ⁴ஷே
கோ⁴ஷே வ்யதாயத ப⁴வஜ்ஜனநீனினாத:³ ॥4॥
Meaning
தாவத் ஸ தா³னவவர:- - then the great demon; அபி ச தீ³னமூர்தி:- - also and weakened by; பா⁴வத்க-பா⁴ர-பரிதா⁴ரண- - Thy weight (which he was) carrying; லூன-வேக:³ - (because of which his) speed diminished; ஸங்கோசம்-ஆப - (and he) got shrunk; தத்-அனு - thereafter; க்ஷத-பாம்ஸு-கோ⁴ஷே - subsided the dust and the noise; கோ⁴ஷே வ்யதாயத - in the cowherd village (Gokula) spread (was heard); ப⁴வத்-ஜனநீ-னினாத்³ - Thy mother's cries;
Translation
Then that great demon weakened in power, shrank in size and his speed was diminished because of carrying Thy weight. So the dust storm and the fierce whirling sound had also subsided, and so in the cowherd village Gokula, Thy mother's cries were clearly heard everywhere.
ஶ்லோக:
ரோதோ³பகர்ணனவஶாது³பக³ம்ய கே³ஹம்
க்ரந்த³த்ஸு நந்த³முக²கோ³பகுலேஷு தீ³ன: ।
த்வாம் தா³னவஸ்த்வகி²லமுக்திகரம் முமுக்ஷு-
ஸ்த்வய்யப்ரமுஞ்சதி பபாத வியத்ப்ரதே³ஶாத் ॥5॥
Meaning
ரோத-³உபகர்ணன-வஶாத்- - hearing the wailing and prompted by it; உபக³ம்ய கே³ஹம் - reaching the house; க்ரந்த³த்ஸு - crying; நந்த-³முக-²கோ³பகுலேஷு - (when) Nanda and other gopas and gopis; தீ³ன: - weakened (the Asura); த்வாம் தா³னவ:-து - Thee, the Asura; அகி²ல-முக்திகரம் - (Thee) who releases all from bondage; முமுக்ஷு:- - wanting to release; த்வயி-அப்ரமுஞ்சதி - (when) Thou did not let go Thy hold; பபாத் - fell down; வியத்-ப்ரதே³ஶாத் - from the skies;
Translation
On hearing the wailings of Yashoda, Nanda and the other gopas rushed inside the house crying. Meanwhile, the Asura who had become weak by carrying Thy weight, wanted to release Thee, who releases everyone's bondages. But when Thou did no let go of Thy hold of him, he fell down from the skies.
ஶ்லோக:
ரோதா³குலாஸ்தத³னு கோ³பக³ணா ப³ஹிஷ்ட-²
பாஷாணப்ருஷ்ட²பு⁴வி தே³ஹமதிஸ்த²விஷ்ட²ம் ।
ப்ரைக்ஷந்த ஹந்த நிபதந்தமமுஷ்ய வக்ஷ-
ஸ்யக்ஷீணமேவ ச ப⁴வந்தமலம் ஹஸந்தம் ॥6॥
Meaning
ரோதா³குலா:-தத்-அனு - wailing and exhausted, thereafter; கோ³பக³ணா ப³ஹிஷ்ட-² - the gopas and gopikas, outside (the house); பாஷாண-ப்ருஷ்ட-²பு⁴வி - on the rocky land's back (upon it); தே³ஹம்-அதிஸ்த²விஷ்ட²ம் - the body, very huge and heavy; ப்ரைக்ஷந்த ஹந்த - saw, what a wonder; நிபதந்தம்- - falling down; அமுஷ்ய வக்ஷஸி- - on this (body's) chest; அக்ஷீணம்-ஏவ - absolutely unscathed; ச ப⁴வந்தம் - and Thee; அலம் ஹஸந்தம் - slightly smiling (saw);
Translation
The gopas were exhausted by their crying and wailing. Then outside the house, they saw a huge and heavy body falling on the rock. What a wonder! On the chest of the dead body, they found Thee with a soft smile lying unscathed.
ஶ்லோக:
க்³ராவப்ரபாதபரிபிஷ்டக³ரிஷ்ட²தே³ஹ-
ப்⁴ரஷ்டாஸுது³ஷ்டத³னுஜோபரி த்⁴ருஷ்டஹாஸம் ।
ஆக்⁴னானமம்பு³ஜகரேண ப⁴வந்தமேத்ய
கோ³பா த³து⁴ர்கி³ரிவராதி³வ நீலரத்னம் ॥7॥
Meaning
க்³ராவ-ப்ரபாத - (on) the rock (by) falling; பரிபிஷ்ட-க³ரிஷ்ட-²தே³ஹ- - (being) smashed the huge bodied (Asura); ப்⁴ரஷ்டாஸு-து³ஷ்ட-த³னுஜ- - (having) died the wicked demon,; உபரி த்⁴ருஷ்ட-ஹாஸம் - on it, wearing a smile (Thee); ஆக்⁴னானம்- - beating (about, with); அம்பு³கரேண - (Thy) lotus like hands; ப⁴வந்தம்-ஏத்ய - Thee approaching; கோ³பா: த³து⁴:- - the gopas picked up (Thee); கி³ரிவராத்-இவ - like from a big mountain; நீலரத்னம் - a blue gem (is picked up);
Translation
The wicked demon had died by falling on the rock and his huge body was smashed. Wearing a smile Thou played on that dead body beating about with Thy lotus like hands. The gopas picked Thee up from there as one would pick a blue gem from a big mountain.
ஶ்லோக:
ஏகைகமாஶு பரிக்³ருஹ்ய நிகாமனந்த-³
ந்னந்தா³தி³கோ³பபரிரப்³த⁴விசும்பி³தாங்க³ம் ।
ஆதா³துகாமபரிஶங்கிதகோ³பனாரீ-
ஹஸ்தாம்பு³ஜப்ரபதிதம் ப்ரணுமோ ப⁴வந்தம் ॥8॥
Meaning
ஏக-ஏகம்-ஆஶு - one by one quickly; பரிக்³ருஹ்ய - taking hold of; நிகாம-னந்த³ன் - very much rejoicing; நந்த-³ஆதி³-கோ³ப- - Nanda and other Gopaas; பரிரப்³த-⁴விசும்பி³த- - embracing (and) kissing; அங்க³ம் - the limbs; ஆதா³து-காம- - desiring to take (but); பரிஶங்கித-கோ³பனாரீ- - hesitating (due to shyness) the Gopikaas; ஹஸ்த-அம்பு³ஜ- - (in) the lotus like hands (of the Gopikaas); ப்ரபதிதம் - (Thou) jumped into; ப்ரணும: ப⁴வந்தம் - (we) praise Thee;
Translation
One by one, Nanda and the other Gopaas with great joy took hold of Thee quickly and embraced and kissed Thy limbs.The Gopikaas were also desirous of taking Thee, but did not do so out of shyness. We praise Thee, who then, as a honey beetle jumped into their lotus like hands.
ஶ்லோக:
பூ⁴யோபி கின்னு க்ருணும: ப்ரணதார்திஹாரீ
கோ³விந்த³ ஏவ பரிபாலயதாத் ஸுதம் ந: ।
இத்யாதி³ மாதரபித்ருப்ரமுகை²ஸ்ததா³னீம்
ஸம்ப்ரார்தி²தஸ்த்வத³வனாய விபோ⁴ த்வமேவ ॥9॥
Meaning
பூ⁴ய:-அபி - again and again; கிம்-னு க்ருணும: - what should we do'; ப்ரணதார்திஹாரீ - The redeemer of the devotees; கோ³விந்த³ ஏவ - Govinda only; பரிபாலயதாத் - may protect; ஸுதம் ந: - our son; இதி-ஆதி³ - thus etc.,; மாத:-பித்ரு- - by mother father; ப்ரமுகை²:-ததா³னீம் - and by others at that time; ஸம்ப்ரார்தி²த:- - prayed; த்வத்-அவனாய - (for) Thy protection; விபோ⁴ த்வம்-ஏவ - O Lord! To Thee only;
Translation
Thy mother and father and the others wondered as to what could they do for Thy protection. Again and again, at that time, they said that only Govinda could protect their son. O Lord! The redeemer of Devotees! So they prayed to Thee alone for Thy welfare.
ஶ்லோக:
வாதாத்மகம் த³னுஜமேவமயி ப்ரதூ⁴ன்வன்
வாதோத்³ப⁴வான் மம க³தா³ன் கிமு நோ து⁴னோஷி ।
கிம் வா கரோமி புனரப்யனிலாலயேஶ
நிஶ்ஶேஷரோக³ஶமனம் முஹுரர்த²யே த்வாம் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
வாதாத்மகம் த³னுஜம்- - in the form of wind, the Asura; ஏவம்-அயி - thus O Thou!; ப்ரதூ⁴ன்வன் - having killed; வாத-உத்³ப⁴வான் - arising from the winds; மம க³தா³ன் - my ailments; கிமு நோ து⁴னோஷி - why do you not kill (eradicate); கிம் வா கரோமி - what else can I do; புன:-அபி- - yet again; அனிலாலயேஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; நிஶ்ஶேஷ-ரோக-³ஶமனம் - for the eradication of all my ailments (internal and external); முஹு:-அர்த²யே த்வாம் - (I) again and again beseech Thee;
Translation
Thus Thou killed the Asura who was in the form of the wind. Why do not Thou kill and remove my ailments which also arise from the wind. What else can I do? O Lord of Guruvaayur! I again and again beseech Thee for the eradication of all my internal and external ailments.
