த்வத்³வபுர்னவகலாயகோமலம் ப்ரேமதோ³ஹனமஶேஷமோஹனம் ।
ப்³ரஹ்ம தத்த்வபரசின்முதா³த்மகம் வீக்ஷ்ய ஸம்முமுஹுரன்வஹம் ஸ்த்ரிய: ॥1॥
Meaning
த்வத்-வபு:- - Thy form; நவ-கலாய-கோமலம் - fresh Kalaaya flower like soft; ப்ரேம-தோ³ஹனம்- - evoking love; அஶேஷ-மோஹனம் - (and) to everyone charming; ப்³ரஹ்ம தத்த்வ- - Brahman in essence; பரசித்-முத்³-ஆத்மகம் - Supreme Consciousness, Bliss personifying; வீக்ஷ்ய ஸம்முமுஹு:- - seeing, were captivated; அன்வஹம் ஸ்த்ரிய: - day by day, the Gopikas;
Translation
Day after day the Gopikas saw Thy form and were captivated. Thy form beautiful and fresh and soft like the Kalaaya flower, evoking the sentiment of love. Thy form charmingly enchanting everyone. Thy form, Brahman indeed, the personification of Existence, Reality, Supreme Consciousness and Bliss (Sat-Chit-Aananda).
ஶ்லோக:
மன்மதோ²ன்மதி²தமானஸா: க்ரமாத்த்வத்³விலோகனரதாஸ்ததஸ்தத: ।
கோ³பிகாஸ்தவ ந ஸேஹிரே ஹரே கானநோபக³திமப்யஹர்முகே² ॥2॥
Meaning
மன்மத-²உன்மதி²த- - (by) Cupid churned; மானஸா: க்ரமாத்- - minds, by and by; த்வத்-விலோகன-ரதா:- - Thee to see eager; தத:-தத: - again and again; கோ³பிகா:- - the Gopikaas; தவ - Thy; ந ஸேஹிரே - did not bear; ஹரே - O Lord; கானந-உபக³திம்- - the proceeding to the forest; அபி-அஹ:-முகே² - also at the beginning of the day;
Translation
O Lord! The minds of these Gopikaas were oppressed by Cupid and because of their love for Thee, they were always eager to see Thee. O Hari! By and by they were unable to bear the separation caused by Thy going to the forest early in the morning to tend the cows.
ஶ்லோக:
நிர்க³தே ப⁴வதி த³த்தத்³ருஷ்டயஸ்த்வத்³க³தேன மனஸா ம்ருகே³க்ஷணா: ।
வேணுனாத³முபகர்ண்ய தூ³ரதஸ்த்வத்³விலாஸகத²யாபி⁴ரேமிரே ॥3॥
Meaning
நிர்க³தே ப⁴வதி - (when) Thou had set out; த³த்த-த்³ருஷ்டய:- - with fixed gaze (on Thee); த்வத்-க³தேன - Thou unto; மனஸா - with (such) minds; ம்ருகே³க்ஷணா: - the gazelle-eyed (women); வேணு-னாத³ம்- - the flute sound; உபகர்ண்ய தூ³ரத:- - hearing from far; த்வத்- - Thy; விலாஸ-கத²யா- - sportive activities (narrating); அபி⁴ரேமிரே - experienced great joy;
Translation
When Thou set out, the gazelle-eyed Gopikaas had their eyes fixed on Thee with their minds centred on Thee. They would listen to the sound of Thy flute from afar and revel in narrating and recounting Thy various sportive activities.
ஶ்லோக:
கானநாந்தமிதவான் ப⁴வானபி ஸ்னிக்³த⁴பாத³பதலே மனோரமே ।
வ்யத்யயாகலிதபாத³மாஸ்தி²த: ப்ரத்யபூரயத வேணுனாலிகாம் ॥4॥
Meaning
கானந-அந்தம்- - into the forest; இதவான் ப⁴வான்-அபி - having gone, Thou also; ஸ்னிக்³த-⁴பாத³ப-தலே - under the cool tree; மனோரமே - (which was also) beautiful; வ்யத்யய-ஆகலித- - by crossing placed; பாத³ம்-ஆஸ்தி²த: - legs standing; ப்ரத்யபூரயத - kept filling; வேணுனாலிகாம் - the flute pipe;
Translation
Having gone to the forest, Thou would stand cross-legged under a shady beautiful tree and kept playing the flute and filling its pipe with life-breath.
ஶ்லோக:
மாரபா³ணது⁴தகே²சரீகுலம் நிர்விகாரபஶுபக்ஷிமண்ட³லம் ।
த்³ராவணம் ச த்³ருஷதா³மபி ப்ரபோ⁴ தாவகம் வ்யஜனி வேணுகூஜிதம் ॥5॥
Meaning
மார-பா³ண-து⁴த- - by Cupid's arrows shaken; கே²சரீ-குலம் - the celestial damsels; நிர்விகார- - motionless,; பஶு-பக்ஷி-மண்ட³லம் - animals and birds multitudes; த்³ராவணம் ச - melting and; த்³ருஷதா³ம்-அபி - stones even; ப்ரபோ⁴ தாவகம் - O Lord! Thy; வ்யஜனி - was born; வேணு-கூஜிதம் - flute music;
Translation
O Lord! The music born out of Thy flute shook the celestial damsels with Cupid's arrows. It made the multitudes of animals and birds motionless, and even melted the stones and rocks.
ஶ்லோக:
வேணுரந்த்⁴ரதரலாங்கு³லீத³லம் தாலஸஞ்சலிதபாத³பல்லவம் ।
தத் ஸ்தி²தம் தவ பரோக்ஷமப்யஹோ ஸம்விசிந்த்ய முமுஹுர்வ்ரஜாங்க³னா: ॥6॥
Meaning
வேணு-ரந்த்⁴ர- - (on) the stops of the flute; தரல-அங்கு³லீ-த³லம் - moving of the tender finger (tips); தால-ஸஞ்சலித- - to keep time tapping; பாத-³பல்லவம் - the tender feet; தத் ஸ்தி²தம் தவ - that pose of Thee; பரோக்ஷம்-அபி- - not directly seen, even though; அஹோ - what a wonder; ஸம்விசிந்த்ய - thinking about again and again; முமுஹு:- - fell into a state of ecstasy; வ்ரஜாங்க³னா: - the women of Vraja;
Translation
Thy tender finger tips moved deftly on the stops of the flute, as Thou kept time tapping Thy tender feet. This pose of Thine the Vraja women visualised in their minds again and again and got into a state of ecstasy. Oh how wonderful!
ஶ்லோக:
நிர்விஶங்கப⁴வத³ங்க³த³ர்ஶினீ: கே²சரீ: க²க³ம்ருகா³ன் பஶூனபி ।
த்வத்பத³ப்ரணயி கானநம் ச தா: த⁴ன்யத⁴ன்யமிதி நன்வமானயன் ॥7॥
Meaning
நிர்விஶங்க- - without any restrictions; ப⁴வத்-அங்க-³ - Thy form; த³ர்ஶினீ: கே²சரீ: - being able to see, the celestial damsels; க²க-³ம்ருகா³ன் - birds; பஶூன்-அபி - and animals also; த்வத்-பத-³ப்ரணயி - (with) Thy feet having contact; கானநம் ச தா: - and the forest, they (the Gopikaas); த⁴ன்ய-த⁴ன்யம்-இதி - blessed blessed (they are) thus; நனு-அமானயன் - indeed regarded (them to be);
Translation
The celestial damsels were able to see Thy form without restrictions or hindrance. The birds and animals and cows also could see Thy form directly. Even the forest/earth was always having contact with Thy feet and saw Thy form as Thou roamed about. The Gopikaas of Vraja regarded all of them very fortunate and blessed.
ஶ்லோக:
ஆபிபே³யமத⁴ராம்ருதம் கதா³ வேணுபு⁴க்தரஸஶேஷமேகதா³ ।
தூ³ரதோ ப³த க்ருதம் து³ராஶயேத்யாகுலா முஹுரிமா: ஸமாமுஹன் ॥8॥
Meaning
ஆபிபே³யம்- - (will) imbibe; அத⁴ர-அம்ருதம் கதா³ - the nectar of the lips, when; வேணு-முக்த- - by the flute left over; ரஸ-ஶேஷம்- - the last of the nectar; ஏகதா³ - even once; தூ³ரத: பத³ - far fetched indeed; க்ருதம் து³ராஶய- - is made this greed; இதி-ஆகுலா - thus lamenting; முஹு:-இமா: - again and again, these (Gopikaas); ஸமாமுஹன் - were in great distress;
Translation
O when for once, we will imbibe the nectar of Thy lips, the last of it left over by the flute? Far fetched indeed is this greed.' Thus the Gopikaas lamented again and again and were in great distress and despair.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரத்யஹம் ச புனரித்த²மங்க³னாஶ்சித்தயோனிஜனிதாத³னுக்³ரஹாத் ।
ப³த்³த⁴ராக³விவஶாஸ்த்வயி ப்ரபோ⁴ நித்யமாபுரிஹ க்ருத்யமூட⁴தாம் ॥9॥
Meaning
ப்ரத்யஹம் ச புன:- - every day and again; இத்த²ம்-அங்க³னா:- - thus the women; சித்தயோனி-ஜனிதாத்- - the Cupid's caused; அனுக்³ரஹாத் - blessings; ப³த்³த-⁴ராக-³விவஶா:- - bonding into attachment and so helpless; த்வயி ப்ரபோ⁴ - towards Thee O Lord!; நித்யம்-ஆபு:- - always attained; இஹ க்ருத்ய-மூட⁴தாம் - here (in the worldly) concerns, indifference;
Translation
Day after day and again and again, in this manner, the Cupid caused promptings to the Gopikaas. This was, in a way, a blessing to them. As it made them so bonded in attachment towards Thee, that they became helpless and so always attained indifference in the worldly concerns.
ஶ்லோக:
ராக³ஸ்தாவஜ்ஜாயதே ஹி ஸ்வபா⁴வா-
ந்மோக்ஷோபாயோ யத்னத: ஸ்யான்ன வா ஸ்யாத் ।
தாஸாம் த்வேகம் தத்³த்³வயம் லப்³த⁴மாஸீத்
பா⁴க்³யம் பா⁴க்³யம் பாஹி மாம் மாருதேஶ ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ராக:³-தாவத்- - attachment indeed; ஜாயதே ஹி - comes; ஸ்வபா⁴வாத்- - in the natural course; மோக்ஷ-உபாய: - the means of liberation; யத்னத: ஸ்யாத்- - even with effort may be; ந வா ஸ்யாத் - or may not be; தாஸாம் து- - for them (the Gopikaas) indeed; ஏகம் தத்-த்³வயம் - one that (served as) both; லப்³த⁴ம்-ஆஸீத் - were attained; பா⁴க்³யம் பா⁴க்³யம் - fortunate, fortunate, indeed; பாஹி மாம் - save me; மாருதேஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur;
Translation
Indeed, attachment comes in the natural course. In spite of much effort the means of liberation may or may not be achieved. For the Gopikaas attachment to Thee served as both, as they attained liberation as a result. Oh fortunate indeed they were. O Lord of Guruvaayur! save me.
