அஜாமிலோ நாம மஹீஸுர: புரா
சரன் விபோ⁴ த⁴ர்மபதா²ன் க்³ருஹாஶ்ரமீ ।
கு³ரோர்கி³ரா கானநமேத்ய த்³ருஷ்டவான்
ஸுத்⁴ருஷ்டஶீலாம் குலடாம் மதா³குலாம் ॥1॥
Meaning
அஜாமில: நாம மஹீஸுர: - The Braahmin by the name Ajaamil; புரா - long ago; சரன் விபோ⁴ த⁴ர்மபதா²ன் - O Lord! Who was leading a righteous life; க்³ருஹாஶ்ரமீ - (and) who was a householder; கு³ரோ:-கி³ரா - at the request of his father; கானநம்-ஏத்ய - going to the forest; த்³ருஷ்டவான் - saw; ஸுத்⁴ருஷ்ட்ஶீலாம் - an immodest; குலடாம் - (and) immoral woman; மதா³குலாம் - given to drinking;
Translation
O Lord! Long ago there was a Braahmin householder named Ajaamil who led a virtuous life. He went to the forest (for collecting sacrificial fuel) at his father's request. There he met an immoral, immodest woman who was given to drinking.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ்வத: ப்ரஶாந்தோபி ததா³ஹ்ருதாஶய:
ஸ்வத⁴ர்மமுத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய தயா ஸமாரமன் ।
அத⁴ர்மகாரீ த³ஶமீ ப⁴வன் புன-
ர்த³தௌ⁴ ப⁴வன்னாமயுதே ஸுதே ரதிம் ॥2॥
Meaning
ஸ்வத: ப்ரஶாந்த:-அபி - self controlled, though; தத்-ஆஹ்ருத-ஆஶய: - his mind being attracted by her; ஸ்வ-த⁴ர்மம்-உத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய - all his duties, giving up; தயா ஸமாரமன் - her (company) enjoying; அத⁴ர்மகாரீ - unrighteous; த³ஶமீ ப⁴வன் புன:- - very old becoming, then; த³தௌ⁴ - gave; ப⁴வத்-னாம-யுதே ஸுதே - who bore Thy name, to his son; ரதிம் - attachment;
Translation
Though by nature a man of self control his mind was attracted to her. He gave up all his duties and revelling in her company led a sinful life. As he became old, he became very much attached to his son who bore Thy name - Naaraayana.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ ம்ருத்யுகாலே யமராஜகிங்கரான்
ப⁴யங்கராம்ஸ்த்ரீனபி⁴லக்ஷயன் பி⁴யா ।
புரா மனாக் த்வத்ஸ்ம்ருதிவாஸனாப³லாத்
ஜுஹாவ நாராயணனாமகம் ஸுதம் ॥3॥
Meaning
ஸ ம்ருத்யுகாலே - he, at death time; யமராஜ-கிங்கரான் - the death god's messengers; ப⁴யங்கரான்-த்ரீன்- - very fierce, three (of them); அபி⁴லக்ஷயன் - seeing (before him); பி⁴யா - in fear; புரா மனாக் - long ago, certainly; த்வத்-ஸ்ம்ருதி-வாஸனா-ப³லாத் - a (faint) memory of Thee, by its (Thy memory's) strength; ஜுஹாவ - called; நாராயண-னாமகம் ஸுதம் - Naaraayana named his son;
Translation
At the time of death, he saw before him three fierce looking emissaries of Yama - the god of death. He called out in fright the name of his son Naaraayana, induced by the strength of the memory of his past devotion to Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
து³ராஶயஸ்யாபி ததா³த்வனிர்க³த-
த்வதீ³யனாமாக்ஷரமாத்ரவைப⁴வாத் ।
புரோபி⁴பேதுர்ப⁴வதீ³யபார்ஷதா³:
சதுர்பு⁴ஜா: பீதபடா மனோரமா: ॥4॥
Meaning
து³ராஶயஸ்ய-அபி ததா³-து - then even though he was evil minded; அனிர்க³த த்வதீ³ய- - emerging, of Thy; நாம-அக்ஷர-மாத்ர-வைப⁴வாத் - name's letters,solely by, its glory; புர:-அபி⁴பேது:- - before him appeared; ப⁴வதீ³ய பார்ஷதா³: - Thy emissaries; சதுர்பு⁴ஜா: பீதபடா: மனோரமா: - having four arms, wearing yellow garments with lovely appearance;
Translation
In spite of his evil nature, by the glory of the letters of Thy name uttered by him, there appeared before him, Thy emissaries.They had four arms and were wearing yellow robes and were of enchanting appearance.
ஶ்லோக:
அமும் ச ஸம்பாஶ்ய விகர்ஷதோ ப⁴டான்
விமுஞ்சதேத்யாருருது⁴ர்ப³லாத³மீ ।
நிவாரிதாஸ்தே ச ப⁴வஜ்ஜனைஸ்ததா³
ததீ³யபாபம் நிகி²லம் ந்யவேத³யன் ॥5॥
Meaning
அமும் ச ஸம்பாஶ்ய - him (Ajaamila) tying up with ropes; விகர்ஷத: ப⁴டான் - (and) dragging, to the messengers (of Yama); விமுஞ்சத-இதி- - "Release him" thus (saying); ஆருருது⁴:-ப³லாத்-அமீ - (were) stopped by force, they; நிவாரிதா:-தே ச ப⁴வத்-ஜனை:- - and were obstructed by Thy emissaries; ததா³ ததீ³ய-பாபம் நிகி²லம் - then, all his sins; ந்யவேத³யன் - (they) narrated;
Translation
Seeing Ajaamil tied up with ropes and being dragged by the messengers of Yama, they were obstructed by Thy emissaries by force and were stopped to do so. Then the emissaries of Yama narrate all his sins.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴வந்து பாபானி கத²ம் து நிஷ்க்ருதே
க்ருதேபி போ⁴ த³ண்ட³னமஸ்தி பண்டி³தா: ।
ந நிஷ்க்ருதி: கிம் விதி³தா ப⁴வாத்³ருஶா-
மிதி ப்ரபோ⁴ த்வத்புருஷா ப³பா⁴ஷிரே ॥6॥
Meaning
ப⁴வந்து பாபானி - let there be sins; கத²ம் து - how is it; நிஷ்க்ருதே க்ருதே-அபி - atonements have been made एवेन्; போ⁴ த³ண்ட³னம்-அஸ்தி பண்டி³தா: - are there punishments, O Learned Ones!; ந நிஷ்க்ருதி கிம் விதி³தா - is atonement not known; ப⁴வத்³ருஶாம்-இதி - to persons like you? Thus; ப்ரபோ⁴ - O Lord; த்வத்-புருஷா ப³பா⁴ஷிரே - Thy emissaries spoke;
Translation
O Lord! Thy emissaries told them that even if there were sins, how was it that there was punishment when atonement had been made. Did people like them who were learned, not know what atonement was?
ஶ்லோக:
ஶ்ருதிஸ்ம்ருதிப்⁴யாம் விஹிதா வ்ரதாத³ய:
புனந்தி பாபம் ந லுனந்தி வாஸனாம் ।
அனந்தஸேவா து நிக்ருந்ததி த்³வயீ-
மிதி ப்ரபோ⁴ த்வத்புருஷா ப³பா⁴ஷிரே ॥7॥
Meaning
ஶ்ருதி-ஸ்ம்ருதிப்⁴யாம் - in the Srutis and Smritis; விஹிதா: வ்ரதாத³ய: - are laid down, the vows etc.,; புனந்தி பாபம் - cleanse one of sins; ந லுனந்தி வாஸனாம் - but do not destroy the tendency; அனந்த-ஸேவா து - service to the Lord however,; நிக்ருந்ததி த்³வயீம்-இதி - destroys both, thus; ப்ரபோ⁴ - O Lord!; த்வத்-புருஷா ப³பா⁴ஷிரே - Thy emissaries did speak;
Translation
O Lord! Thy emissaries told them that in the Srutis and Smritis as per the vows which are laid down, they absolve a person from sins, but do not curb the sinful tendency. Whereas, the service of the Lord! Destroys both - the sins and the sinful tendencies.
ஶ்லோக:
அனேன போ⁴ ஜன்மஸஹஸ்ரகோடிபி⁴:
க்ருதேஷு பாபேஷ்வபி நிஷ்க்ருதி: க்ருதா ।
யத³க்³ரஹீன்னாம ப⁴யாகுலோ ஹரே-
ரிதி ப்ரபோ⁴ த்வத்புருஷா ப³பா⁴ஷிரே ॥8॥
Meaning
அனேன போ⁴ - by him (Ajaamil) O! You (messengers of Yama); ஜன்ம-ஸஹஸ்ர-கோடிபி⁴: - in innumerable lives; க்ருதேஷு பாபேஷு-அபி - if he has committed sins also; நிஷ்க்ருதி: க்ருதா - atonement has been made; யத்-அக்³ரஹீத்-னாம - because he took (uttered) the name; ப⁴ய-ஆகுல: ஹரே:-இதி - overcome by fear, of Hari, thus; ப்ரபோ⁴ - O Lord!; த்வத்-புருஷா ப³பா⁴ஷிரே - Thy emissaries did speak;
Translation
O Lord! Thy emissaries told the messengers of Yama that though overcome by fear, Ajaamil had uttered the Name of Hari. By that alone he had atoned for all the sins committed by him in innumerable lives.
ஶ்லோக:
ந்ருணாமபு³த்³த்⁴யாபி முகுந்த³கீர்தனம்
த³ஹத்யகௌ⁴கா⁴ன் மஹிமாஸ்ய தாத்³ருஶ: ।
யதா²க்³னிரேதா⁴ம்ஸி யதௌ²ஷத⁴ம் க³தா³ -
நிதி ப்ரபோ⁴ த்வத்புருஷா ப³பா⁴ஷிரே ॥9॥
Meaning
ந்ருணாம்-அபு³த்³த்⁴யா-அபி - of human beings, unknowingly even,; முகுந்த்³-கீர்தனம் - the name of Mukund is chanted; த³ஹதி-அக-⁴ஔகா⁴ன் - burns up all sins; மஹிமா-அஸ்ய தாத்³ருஶ: - its glory is such; யதா²-அக்³னி:-ஏதா⁴ம்ஸி - like fire (burning) fuel; யதா²-ஔஷத⁴ம் க³தா³ன் இதி - like medicine (curing) disease; ப்ரபோ⁴ - O Lord! Thus; த்வத்-புருஷா ப³பா⁴ஷிரே - Thy emissaries did speak;
Translation
O Lord! Thy emissaries told them that even if the chanting of The Name of Mukund is done unknowingly, by the human beings, it burns up all their sins. Its glory is like that of fire burning the fuel and like the medicine curing the disease.
ஶ்லோக:
இதீரிதைர்யாம்யப⁴டைரபாஸ்ருதே
ப⁴வத்³ப⁴டானாம் ச க³ணே திரோஹிதே ।
ப⁴வத்ஸ்ம்ருதிம் கஞ்சன காலமாசரன்
ப⁴வத்பத³ம் ப்ராபி ப⁴வத்³ப⁴டைரஸௌ ॥1௦॥
Meaning
இதி-ஈரிதை:- - thus being told; யாம்ய-ப⁴டை:- - the messengers of Yama; அபாஸ்ருதே - having left; ப⁴வத்-ப⁴டானாம் ச - and Thy emissaries; க³ணே திரோஹிதே - in a group having disappeared; ப⁴வத்-ஸ்ம்ருதிம் - having Thy remembrance; கஞ்சன காலம்- - for some time; ஆசரன் - and worshipping Thee; ப⁴வத்-பத³ம் ப்ராபி - Thy abode attaining; ப⁴வத்-ப⁴டை:-அஸௌ - this (Ajaamil) (led by) Thy emissaries;
Translation
The messengers of Yama left when they were told thus. The group of Thy emissaries also disappeared. Ajaamil remembered and worshipped Thee for some time and then attained Thy abode led by Thy emissaries.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ்வகிங்கராவேத³னஶங்கிதோ யம-
ஸ்த்வத³ங்க்⁴ரிப⁴க்தேஷு ந க³ம்யதாமிதி ।
ஸ்வகீயப்⁴ருத்யானஶிஶிக்ஷது³ச்சகை:
ஸ தே³வ வாதாலயனாத² பாஹி மாம் ॥11॥
Meaning
ஸ்வ-கிங்கர-ஆவேத³ன- - his messengers reprting1`; ஶங்கித: யம:- - the much concerned Yama; த்வத்-அங்க்⁴ரி-ப⁴க்தேஷு - to the devotees of Thy feet; ந க³ம்யதாம்-இதி - do not go, thus; ஸ்வகீய-ப்⁴ருத்யான்- - his own messengers; அஶிஶிக்ஷத்-உச்சகை: - instructed strictly; ஸ தே³வ வாதாலயனாத² - Thou (who are such) Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur!; பாஹி மாம் - protect me;
Translation
Yama was very much concerned at the report of his messengers. He strictly instructed them not to go to the devotees of Thy feet. O Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are such, protect me.
