ஶ்லோக:
த³த்³ருஶிரே கில தத்க்ஷணமக்ஷத-
ஸ்தனிதஜ்ரும்பி⁴தகம்பிததி³க்தடா: ।
ஸுஷமயா ப⁴வத³ங்க³துலாம் க³தா
வ்ரஜபதோ³பரி வாரித⁴ராஸ்த்வயா ॥1॥
Meaning
த³த்³ருஶிரே கில - were seen indeed; தத்-க்ஷணம்- - (at) that moment; அக்ஷத-ஸ்தனித- - continuously roaring; ஜ்ரும்பி⁴த-கம்பித- - (and) spreading (and) causing to tremble; தி³க்-தடா: - the quarters to their ends; ஸுஷமயா - in their brilliance; ப⁴வத்-அங்க-³துலாம் - Thy form in resemblance; க³தா: - attaining; வ்ரஜபத-³உபரி - above the land of Vraja; வாரித⁴ரா:-த்வயா - rain clouds by Thee (were seen);
Translation
At that moment, indeed, above the land of Vraja, were seen by Thee massive rain clouds continuously roaring and spreading. They caused all the quarters to tremble and they resembled Thy form in their brilliance.
ஶ்லோக:
விபுலகரகமிஶ்ரைஸ்தோயதா⁴ரானிபாதை-
ர்தி³ஶிதி³ஶி பஶுபானாம் மண்ட³லே த³ண்ட்³யமானே ।
குபிதஹரிக்ருதான்ன: பாஹி பாஹீதி தேஷாம்
வசனமஜித ஶ்ர்ருண்வன் மா பி³பீ⁴தேத்யபா⁴ணீ: ॥2॥
Meaning
விபுல-கரக்-மிஶ்ரை:- - huge hail stones accompanied by; தோய-தா⁴ரா-னிபாதை:- - torrential rain fall; தி³ஶி-தி³ஶி - in all directions; பஶுபானாம் மண்ட³லே - (when) the cowherds' groups; த³ண்ட்³மானே - were being tormented; குபித- - (from) angered; ஹரி-க்ருதாத்- - Indra's actions; ந: பாஹி பாஹி- - save, save us; இதி தேஷாம் வசனம்- - thus their words; அஜித ஶ்ர்ருணவன் - O Invincible One! Hearing; மா விபீ⁴த- - do not be afraid; இதி-அபா⁴ணீ: - thus (Thou) said;
Translation
There was torrential rain in all directions accompanied by huge enormous hail stones. The group of cowherds were tormented by the wrathful action of Indra. They all cried and prayed to be protected. O Invincible One! Hearing their laments , Thou asked them not to fear.
ஶ்லோக:
குல இஹ க²லு கோ³த்ரோ தை³வதம் கோ³த்ரஶத்ரோ-
ர்விஹதிமிஹ ஸ ருந்த்⁴யாத் கோ நு வ: ஸம்ஶயோஸ்மின் ।
இதி ஸஹஸிதவாதீ³ தே³வ கோ³வர்த்³த⁴னாத்³ரிம்
த்வரிதமுத³முமூலோ மூலதோ பா³லதோ³ர்ப்⁴யாம் ॥3॥
Meaning
குல இஹ - (for) the clan here; க²லு கோ³த்ர: தை³வதம் - indeed the mountain is the deity; கோ³த்ர-ஶத்ரோ:- - the mountain enemy's; விஹிதம்-இஹ் - attack here; ஸ ருந்த்⁴யாத் - he will resist; க: நு வ: ஸம்ஶய:- - what indeed is your doubt; அஸ்மின் இதி - in this, thus; ஸஹஸித-வாதீ³ - with a smile saying; தே³வ - O Lord!; கோ³வர்த்³த⁴ன-அத்³ரிம் - the Govardhana mountain; த்வரிதம்- - quickly; உத³முமூல: மூலத: - uprooted from the roots; பா³ல-தோ³ர்ப்⁴யாம் - with (Thy) two tender hands;
Translation
Here, for our clan, the mountain is the deity. Indra is the enemy of mountains. This mountain, Govardhan, will resist Indra's attack. Indeed what is your doubt in this?' Thou said so with a smile. O Lord! Assuring them, Thou quickly uprooted the Govardhana mountain with Thy two tender arms.
ஶ்லோக:
தத³னு கி³ரிவரஸ்ய ப்ரோத்³த்⁴ருதஸ்யாஸ்ய தாவத்
ஸிகதிலம்ருது³தே³ஶே தூ³ரதோ வாரிதாபே ।
பரிகரபரிமிஶ்ரான் தே⁴னுகோ³பானத⁴ஸ்தா-
து³பனித³த⁴த³த⁴த்தா² ஹஸ்தபத்³மேன ஶைலம் ॥4॥
Meaning
தத³னு கி³ரிவரஸ்ய - thereafter of (this) mountain; ப்ரோத்³த்⁴ருதஸ்ய- - (which) was lifted up; அஸ்ய தாவத் - this then; ஸிகதில-ம்ருது³-தே³ஶே - on the soft sand bed; தூ³ரத: வாரித-ஆபே - which till far away was protected from water; பரிகர-பரிமிஶ்ரான் - household articles, along with; தே⁴னு-கோ³பான்- - cows and cowherds; அத⁴ஸ்தாத்- - underneath; உபனித³த⁴த்- - keeping; அத⁴த்தா²: - (Thou) held aloft; ஹஸ்த-பத்³மேன - with one lotus like arm; ஶைலம் - the mountain;
Translation
Then Thou held aloft the lifted up mountain with Thy lotus like arm. The soft sand bed of the mountain was well protected from the rain water. The cows and cowherds all gathered under the uplifted mountain along with their belongings and were also well protected.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴வதி வித்⁴ருதஶைலே பா³லிகாபி⁴ர்வயஸ்யை-
ரபி விஹிதவிலாஸம் கேலிலாபாதி³லோலே ।
ஸவித⁴மிலிததே⁴னூரேகஹஸ்தேன கண்டூ³-
யதி ஸதி பஶுபாலாஸ்தோஷமைஷந்த ஸர்வே ॥5॥
Meaning
ப⁴வதி - (when) Thou; வித்⁴ருத-ஶைலே - were holding the mountain; பா³லிகாபி⁴: - with the girls and; வயஸ்யை:-அபி - with the boys of Thy age group also; விஹித-விலாஸம் - with enthusiasm; கேலி-லாப-ஆதி³-லோலே - in playful conversation etc engaging; ஸவித-⁴மிலித-தே⁴னூ:- - near Thee gathered cows; ஏக-ஹஸ்தேன - with one hand; கண்டூ³யதி ஸதி - caressing; பஶுபாலா:- - the cowherds; தோஷம்-ஐஷந்த - satisfaction achieved; ஸர்வே - all of them;
Translation
As Thou were holding the mountain, Thou enthusiastically engaged the girls and boys of Thy age group in playful conversation. The cows gathered around Thee and Thou caressed them with one hand. The cowherds were all very satisfied and delighted.
ஶ்லோக:
அதிமஹான் கி³ரிரேஷ து வாமகே
கரஸரோருஹி தம் த⁴ரதே சிரம் ।
கிமித³மத்³பு⁴தமத்³ரிப³லம் ந்விதி
த்வத³வலோகிபி⁴ராகதி² கோ³பகை: ॥6॥
Meaning
அதிமஹான் - very big; கி³ரி:-ஏஷ - mountain this (is); து வாமகே - however in the left; கர-ஸரோருஹி - hand, lotus like; தம் த⁴ரதே சிரம் - this (mountain) (he) is holding for long; கிம்-இத³ம்- - what this; அத்³பு⁴தம்- - wonder; அத்³ரி-ப³லம் - (or) mountain's power; நு-இதி - indeed (is it) thus; த்வத்-அவலோகிபி⁴:- - by Thy onlookers; ஆகதி² கோ³பகை: - was said by the cowherds;
Translation
This mountain is so huge. Yet he is holding it in his left hand which is tender like a lotus stalk, for long. What a marvel! Is it that it is the power of the mountain to have lifted itself up?' The Gopas who were Thy onlookers commented thus.
ஶ்லோக:
அஹஹ தா⁴ர்ஷ்ட்யமமுஷ்ய வடோர்கி³ரிம்
வ்யதி²தபா³ஹுரஸாவவரோபயேத் ।
இதி ஹரிஸ்த்வயி ப³த்³த⁴விக³ர்ஹணோ
தி³வஸஸப்தகமுக்³ரமவர்ஷயத் ॥7॥
Meaning
அஹஹ தா⁴ர்ஷ்ட்யம்- - Oh! Arrogance; அமுஷ்ய வடோ:- - of this small boy; கி³ரிம் வ்யதி²த-பா³ஹு:- - the mountain (with) pained hands; அஸௌ-அவரோபயேத் - this (mountain) will place back; இதி ஹரி:-த்வயி - thus Indra in Thee; ப³த்³த-⁴விக³ர்ஹண: - full of contempt; தி³வஸ-ஸப்தகம்- - for seven days; உக்³ரம்-அவர்ஷயத் - heavily rained;
Translation
Oh! The arrogance of this small boy! When his hands pain by the weight of the mountain, he will put it back in place.' Saying so Indra who was full of contempt for Thee poured rain heavily for seven days.
ஶ்லோக:
அசலதி த்வயி தே³வ பதா³த் பத³ம்
க³லிதஸர்வஜலே ச க⁴னோத்கரே ।
அபஹ்ருதே மருதா மருதாம் பதி-
ஸ்த்வத³பி⁴ஶங்கிததீ⁴: ஸமுபாத்³ரவத் ॥8॥
Meaning
அசலதி த்வயி - (when) did not move Thou; தே³வ - O Lord!; பதா³த் பத³ம் - from Thy place, (even) one step; க³லித-ஸர்வ-ஜலே - (and when) were exhausted all the waters; ச க⁴னோத்கரே - and the clouds; அபஹ்ருதே மருதா - (and when they) were dispersed by the winds; மருதாம் பதி: - the head of the gods Indra; த்வத்-அபி⁴ஶங்கித-தீ⁴: - (about) Thee (having) a doubtful mind; ஸமுபாத்³ரவத் - fled;
Translation
Thou had not stirred one step from Thy place. All the clouds were drained and exhausted of their waters. They were drifted away and scattered by the winds. Noticing all this, the head of the gods, Indra was scared of Thy might and fled.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶமமுபேயுஷி வர்ஷப⁴ரே ததா³
பஶுபதே⁴னுகுலே ச வினிர்க³தே ।
பு⁴வி விபோ⁴ ஸமுபாஹிதபூ⁴த⁴ர:
ப்ரமுதி³தை: பஶுபை: பரிரேபி⁴ஷே ॥9॥
Meaning
ஶமம்-உபேயுஷி - subsiding (having) reached; வர்ஷப⁴ரே ததா³ - the heavy rain then; பஶுப-தே⁴னு-குலே - the cowherds and the cows; ச வினிர்க³தே - had come out (from under the mountain); பு⁴வி விபோ⁴ - on the ground O Lord!; ஸமுபாஹித-பூ⁴த⁴ர: - (Thee who) had placed the mountain; ப்ரமுதி³தை: பஶுபை: - by the overjoyed cowherds; பரிரேபி⁴ஷே - were embraced;
Translation
The heavy rain had then subsided and the cows and cowherds had come out from under the mountain. O Lord! Thou then replaced the mountain on the earth and were embraced by the overjoyed cowherds.
ஶ்லோக:
த⁴ரணிமேவ புரா த்⁴ருதவானஸி
க்ஷிதித⁴ரோத்³த⁴ரணே தவ க: ஶ்ரம: ।
இதி நுதஸ்த்ரித³ஶை: கமலாபதே
கு³ருபுராலய பாலய மாம் க³தா³த் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
த⁴ரணிம்-ஏவ புரா - earth also itself, long ago; த்⁴ருதவானஸி - had lifted up (Thou); க்ஷிதித⁴ர-உத்³த⁴ரணே - in mountain lifting up; தவ க: ஶ்ரம: - Thy what effort; இதி நுத:-த்ரித³ஶை: - thus praised by the gods; கமலாபதே - O Consort of Laxmi!; கு³ருபுராலய - O Resident of Guruvaayur!; பாலய மாம் க³தா³த் - save me from ailments;
Translation
O Consort of Laxmi! The gods praised Thee saying that long ago (in the incarnation of a Boar) Thou had lifted up the whole earth itself. Lifting up the mountain was not much of an effort for Thee. O Resident of Guruvaayur! Save me from ailments.
