தரலமது⁴க்ருத் வ்ருந்தே³ வ்ருந்தா³வனேத² மனோஹரே
பஶுபஶிஶுபி⁴: ஸாகம் வத்ஸானுபாலனலோலுப: ।
ஹலத⁴ரஸகோ² தே³வ ஶ்ரீமன் விசேரித² தா⁴ரயன்
க³வலமுரலீவேத்ரம் நேத்ராபி⁴ராமதனுத்³யுதி: ॥1॥
Meaning
தரல-மது⁴க்ருத்-வ்ருந்தே³ - with fleeting honey bee swarms; வ்ருந்தா³வனே-அத² - in Vrindaavana, then; மனோஹரே - the beautiful one; பஶுப-ஶிஶுபி⁴: ஸாகம் - with the cowherd boys; வத்ஸ-அனுபாலன-லோலுப: - in tending the calves engrossed; ஹலத⁴ர-ஸக:² - accompanied by Haladhara; தே³வ ஶ்ரீமன் - O Lord! Consort of Laxmi!; விசேரித² தா⁴ரயன் - (Thou) moved about carrying; க³வல-முரலீ-வேத்ரம் - a horn flute and cane; நேத்ர-அபி⁴ராம-தனு-த்³யுதி: - pleasing to the eyes (with Thy) radiant form;
Translation
In the beautiful Vrindaavana swarms of honey bees would fleet around. There, O Auspicious Lord! Consort of Laxmi! Accompanied by Haladhara and other cowherd boys, Thou moved about with Thy radiant form pleasing to the eyes. Keen on tending the cows, Thou carried a horn, flute and a cane.
ஶ்லோக:
விஹிதஜக³தீரக்ஷம் லக்ஷ்மீகராம்பு³ஜலாலிதம்
த³த³தி சரணத்³வந்த்³வம் வ்ருந்தா³வனே த்வயி பாவனே ।
கிமிவ ந ப³பௌ⁴ ஸம்பத்ஸம்பூரிதம் தருவல்லரீ-
ஸலிலத⁴ரணீகோ³த்ரக்ஷேத்ராதி³கம் கமலாபதே ॥2॥
Meaning
விஹித-ஜக³தீ-ரக்ஷம் - infused with the protection of the world; லக்ஷ்மீ-கர-அம்பு³ஜ-லாலிதம் - by Laxmi's lotus like hands caressed; த³த³தி சரண-த்³வந்த்³வம் - (when Thou) places (Thy) two feet; வ்ருந்தா³வனே த்வயி பாவனே - in Vrindaavana, by Thee, in the holy (Vrindaavana); கிம்-இவ ந ப³பௌ⁴ - what all did not take place; ஸம்பத்-ஸம்பூரிதம் - with prosperity full of; தரு-வல்லரீ-ஸலில- - the trees, creepers, waters; த⁴ரணீ-கோ³த்ர-க்ஷேத்ர-ஆதி³கம் - land, hills, and fields etc; கமலாபதே - O Consort of Laxmi!;
Translation
O Consort of Laxmi! Thou set Thy two feet, which are caressed by Laxmi's lotus hands and which are infused with the protection of the world, in Vrindaavana. When Thou did so, the trees, creepers, waters, lands, hills and fields and what all was not full of prosperity!
ஶ்லோக:
விலஸது³லபே காந்தாராந்தே ஸமீரணஶீதலே
விபுலயமுனாதீரே கோ³வர்த⁴னாசலமூர்த⁴ஸு ।
லலிதமுரலீனாத:³ ஸஞ்சாரயன் க²லு வாத்ஸகம்
க்வசன தி³வஸே தை³த்யம் வத்ஸாக்ருதிம் த்வமுதை³க்ஷதா²: ॥3॥
Meaning
விலஸத்-உலபே - in the lavish grass meadows; காந்தார-அந்தே - at the forests' end; ஸமீரண-ஶீதலே - with cool breeze (blowing); விபுல-யமுனா-தீரே - on the vast banks of Yamunaa; கோ³வர்த⁴ன-அசல-மூர்த⁴ஸு - on the Govardhana mountain peaks; லலித-முரலீ-னாத:³ - with the gentle flute sound; ஸஞ்சாரயன் க²லு வாத்ஸகம் - (leading) to graze the calves, indeed; க்வசன தி³வஸே - one day; தை³த்யம் வத்ஸ-ஆக்ருதிம் - an Asura in the form of a calf; த்வம்-உதை³க்ஷதா²: - Thou saw;
Translation
In the lavish grass meadows at the end of the forests, the cool breeze was blowing on the vast banks of the Yamunaa river, on the peaks of the Govardhana mountain, Thou were playing the flute softly as Thou lead the calves to graze. One day, Thou saw an Asura in the form of a calf.
ஶ்லோக:
ரப⁴ஸவிலஸத்புச்ச²ம் விச்சா²யதோஸ்ய விலோகயன்
கிமபி வலிதஸ்கந்த⁴ம் ரந்த்⁴ரப்ரதீக்ஷமுதீ³க்ஷிதம் ।
தமத² சரணே பி³ப்⁴ரத்³விப்⁴ராமயன் முஹுருச்சகை:
குஹசன மஹாவ்ருக்ஷே சிக்ஷேபித² க்ஷதஜீவிதம் ॥4॥
Meaning
ரப⁴ஸ-விலஸத்-புச்ச²ம் - with force wagging the tail; விச்சா²யத:- - while walking; அஸ்ய விலோகயன் - his (calf's) gaze; கிம்-அபி வலித-ஸ்கந்த⁴ம் - with somewhat turning his neck; ரந்த்⁴ர-ப்ரதீக்ஷம்-உதீ³க்ஷிதம் - for a loop hole waiting to see; தம்-அத² சரணே - him, then with two legs; விப்⁴ரத்-விப்⁴ராமயன் - catching hold of and swirling; முஹு:-உச்சகை: - again and again very fast; குஹசன மஹாவ்ருக்ஷே - on a big tree; சிக்ஷேபித² க்ஷத-ஜீவிதம் - (Thou) threw, as he lost his life;
Translation
As the Asura walked about, wagging its tail briskly and forcefully, it turned its head in a strange way looking for a loop hole (an opportunity) to strike. Thou caught him by his two legs and swirling him very fast again and again, threw him on a big tree just as he lost his life.
ஶ்லோக:
நிபததி மஹாதை³த்யே ஜாத்யா து³ராத்மனி தத்க்ஷணம்
நிபதனஜவக்ஷுண்ணக்ஷோணீருஹக்ஷதகானநே ।
தி³வி பரிமிலத் வ்ருந்தா³ வ்ருந்தா³ரகா: குஸுமோத்கரை:
ஶிரஸி ப⁴வதோ ஹர்ஷாத்³வர்ஷந்தி நாம ததா³ ஹரே ॥5॥
Meaning
நிபததி மஹா-தை³த்யே - (when) killed was the mighty Asura; ஜாத்யா து³ராத்மனி - (who) by birth was evil minded; தத்-க்ஷணம் - then at that time; நிபதன-ஜவ- - (because of) the falling force; க்ஷுண்ண-க்ஷோணீ:- - by breaking of the top of; உஹ-க்ஷத-கானநே - the trees (and so) destroyed the forests; தி³வி பரிமிலத் வ்ருந்தா³ - in the skies, the assembled groups; வ்ருந்தா³ரகா: - of gods; குஸும-உத்கரை: - with flowers' heaps; ஶிரஸி ப⁴வத: - on Thy head; ஹர்ஷாத்-வர்ஷந்தி - with joy, showering; நாம ததா³ ஹரே - indeed, then, O God!;
Translation
By the impact of the fall of the Asura who was evil minded by birth, the tops of the trees were broken and the forests were destroyed. O God! The gods then assembling in the skies showered heaps of flowers on Thy head, in joy.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸுரபி⁴லதமா மூர்த⁴ன்யூர்த்⁴வம் குத: குஸுமாவலீ
நிபததி தவேத்யுக்தோ பா³லை: ஸஹேலமுதை³ரய: ।
ஜ²டிதி த³னுஜக்ஷேபேணோர்த்⁴வம் க³தஸ்தருமண்ட³லாத்
குஸுமனிகர: ஸோயம் நூனம் ஸமேதி ஶனைரிதி ॥6॥
Meaning
ஸுரபி⁴லதமா - most fragrant; மூர்த⁴னி-ஊர்த்⁴வம் - on top of (Thy) head; குத: குஸுமாவலீ - from where cluster of flowers; நிபததி தவ- - is falling (on) Thy (head); இதி-உக்த: பா³லை: - thus was said by the children; ஸஹேலம்-உதை³ரய: - jokingly (Thou) said; ஜ²டிதி - suddenly; த³னுஜ-க்ஷேபேண- - by the Asura's throwing; ஊர்த்⁴வம் க³த:- - rising upward; தரு-மண்ட³லாத் - from the clusters of the trees; குஸும-னிகர: - the heaps of flowers; ஸ:-அயம் நூனம் - that this indeed; ஸமேதி ஶனை:-இதி - is coming down slowly, thus;
Translation
The cowherd children asked Thee as to from where the extremely fragrant heap of flowers were falling on the top of Thy head. Thou jokingly told them that when the Asura was thrown , the flowers blooming on the clusters of the trees rose up and indeed those flowers were coming down slowly now.
ஶ்லோக:
க்வசன தி³வஸே பூ⁴யோ பூ⁴யஸ்தரே பருஷாதபே
தபனதனயாபாத:² பாதும் க³தா ப⁴வதா³த³ய: ।
சலிதக³ருதம் ப்ரேக்ஷாமாஸுர்ப³கம் க²லு விஸ்ம்ர்ருதம்
க்ஷிதித⁴ரக³ருச்சே²தே³ கைலாஸஶைலமிவாபரம் ॥7॥
Meaning
க்வசன தி³வஸே - on another day; பூ⁴ய: பூ⁴யஸ்தரே - again, again very much; பருஷ-ஆதபே - (when) it was very hot; தபன-தனயா-பாத:² - the sun daughter's waters (waters of Yamunaa); பாதும் க³தா - to drink went; ப⁴வத்-ஆத³ய: - Thou and others; சலித-க³ருதம் - moving very quickly (the wings); ப்ரேக்ஷாமாஸு:-ப³கம் - (Thou) saw a crane; க²லு விஸ்ம்ருதம் - indeed forgotten; க்ஷிதித⁴ர-க³ருத்-சே²தே³ - (when) the mountains' wings were cut (by Indra); கைலாஸ-ஶைலம்-இவ-அபரம் - Kailaash mountain like another;
Translation
Again on another day, when it was extremely hot, Thou and the others went to drink the water of river Yamunaa who is the daughter of the Sun. Thou saw a crane flapping its wings very quickly, which looked like the mountain Kailaash whose wings Indra forgot to cut when he was cutting off the wings of the mountains.

பிப³தி ஸலிலம் கோ³பவ்ராதே ப⁴வந்தமபி⁴த்³ருத:
ஸ கில நிகி³லன்னக்³னிப்ரக்²யம் புனர்த்³ருதமுத்³வமன் ।
த³லயிதுமகா³த்த்ரோட்யா: கோட்யா ததா³ஶு ப⁴வான் விபோ⁴
க²லஜனபி⁴தா³சுஞ்சுஶ்சஞ்சூ ப்ரக்³ருஹ்ய த³தா³ர தம் ॥8॥
Meaning
பிப³தி ஸலிலம் - drinking the water (when); கோ³பவ்ராதே - the cowherd boys were,; ப⁴வந்தம்-அபி⁴த்³ருத: - towards Thee charging; ஸ கில நிகி³லன்- - he indeed swallowing Thee; அக்³னி-ப்ரக்²யம் - fire-like (Thee); புன:-த்³ருதம்-உத்³வமன் - again hastily spitting out; த³லயிதும்-அகா³த்- - to tear (Thee) came; த்ரோட்யா: கோட்யா - by the beaks point; ததா³-ஆஶு - then quickly; ப⁴வான் விபோ⁴ - Thou O Lord!; க²ல-ஜன-பி⁴தா³-சுஞ்சு:- - in the evil people destroying expert; சஞ்சூ ப்ரக்³ருஹ்ய - (his Asura's) beak, catching hold of; த³தா³ர தம் - tore him apart;
Translation
When the cowherd boys were drinking water, he charged towards Thee and swallowed Thee and again hastily spit Thee out like a ball of fire. He then came to tear Thee by the point of its beak. O Lord! Thou who are adapt at destroying the evil people, catching hold of his beak, tore him apart.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸபதி³ ஸஹஜாம் ஸந்த்³ரஷ்டும் வா ம்ருதாம் க²லு பூதனா-
மனுஜமக⁴மப்யக்³ரே க³த்வா ப்ரதீக்ஷிதுமேவ வா ।
ஶமனநிலயம் யாதே தஸ்மின் ப³கே ஸுமனோக³ணே
கிரதி ஸுமனோவ்ருந்த³ம் வ்ருந்தா³வனாத் க்³ருஹமையதா²: ॥9॥
Meaning
ஸபதி³ ஸஹஜாம் - hastily, (his) sister; ஸந்த்³ரஷ்டும் வா ம்ருதாம் - to see or the dead; க²லு பூதனாம்- - indeed Pootanaa; அனுஜம்-அக⁴ம்-அபி- - (Or) the younger brother Agha also; அக்³ரே க³த்வா - ahead going; ப்ரதீக்ஷிதும்-ஏவ வா - or awaiting him only; ஶமன-னிலயம் - to the abode of death; யாதே தஸ்மின் ப³கே - his having gone, the crane's; ஸுமனோக³ணே - (when) the host of gods; கிரதி ஸுமன-வ்ருந்த³ம் - was showering heaps of flowers; வ்ருந்தா³வனாத் - from Vrindaavana; க்³ருஹம்-ஐயதா²: - to home (Thou) went;
Translation
In no time the crane demon reached the abode of death as if to see his dead sister Pootanaa or as if to welcome his younger brother Aghaasura who was to follow him. As the host of gods were showering heaps of flowers, Thou went home from the woods of Vrindaavana.

லலிதமுரலீனாத³ம் தூ³ரான்னிஶம்ய வதூ⁴ஜனை-
ஸ்த்வரிதமுபக³ம்யாராதா³ரூட⁴மோத³முதீ³க்ஷித: ।
ஜனிதஜனநீனந்தா³னந்த:³ ஸமீரணமந்தி³ர-
ப்ரதி²தவஸதே ஶௌரே தூ³ரீகுருஷ்வ மமாமயான் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
லலித-முரலீ-னாத³ம் - the sweet sound of the flute; தூ³ராத்-னிஶம்ய - from far hearing; வதூ⁴ஜனை:- - by the Gopikas; த்வரிதம்-உபக³ம்ய-ஆராத்- - hastily approaching near; ஆரூட-⁴மோத³ம்-உதீ³க்ஷித: - in extreme joy (they) saw (Thee); ஜனித-ஜனநீ-னந்த-³ஆனந்த:³ - causing joy to (Thy) mother and Nanda; ஸமீரண-மந்தி³ர-ப்ரதி²த-வஸதே - in the Guruvaayur temple, famous, living; ஶௌரே - O Shauri! (Vaasudeva); தூ³ரீ குருஷ்வ - expel; மம-ஆமயான் - my ailments;
Translation
The Gopikaas heard the sweet sound of Thy flute and rushed with great joy to have a glimpse of Thee. Thy parents Yashoda and Nanda were also very delighted to see Thee. O Thou Shauri! (Vaasudeva) Who are well known to be residing in the famous temple of Guruvaayur, be pleased to expel my ailments.
