நாராயணீயம் த³ஶக 17

ஶ்லோக:
உத்தானபாத³ன்ருபதேர்மனுனந்த³னஸ்ய
ஜாயா ப³பூ⁴வ ஸுருசிர்னிதராமபீ⁴ஷ்டா ।
அன்யா ஸுனீதிரிதி ப⁴ர்துரனாத்³ருதா ஸா
த்வாமேவ நித்யமக³தி: ஶரணம் க³தாபூ⁴த் ॥1॥

Meaning
உத்தானபாத-³ன்ருபதே:- - king Uttaanpaad's; மனு-னந்த³னஸ்ய - who was the son of Manu; ஜாயா ப³பூ⁴வ ஸுருசி:- - wife became Suruchi; நிதராம்-அபீ⁴ஷ்டா - extremely dear; அன்யா ஸுனீதி:-இதி - the other (wife) named Suneeti; ப⁴ர்து:-அனாத்³ருதா ஸா - she was neglected by her husband; த்வாம்-ஏவ நித்யம்- - in Thee alone, who are eternal; அக³தி:-ஶரணம் - refuge of the helpless (she); க³தா-அபூ⁴த் - (in Thee) took refuge;

Translation
To the king Uttaanpaada, the son of Manu, his wife Suruchi was extremely dear. The other wife Suneeti being ignored by her husband, was helpless and took shelter in Thee alone who are eternal refuge of the helpless.

ஶ்லோக:
அங்கே பிது: ஸுருசிபுத்ரகமுத்தமம் தம்
த்³ருஷ்ட்வா த்⁴ருவ: கில ஸுனீதிஸுதோதி⁴ரோக்ஷ்யன் ।
ஆசிக்ஷிபே கில ஶிஶு: ஸுதராம் ஸுருச்யா
து³ஸ்ஸந்த்யஜா க²லு ப⁴வத்³விமுகை²ரஸூயா ॥2॥

Meaning
அங்கே பிது: - on (his) father's lap; ஸுருசி-புத்ரகம்-உத்தமம் தம் - Suruchi's son, that Uttama,; த்³ருஷ்ட்வா த்⁴ருவ: கில - seeing Dhruva indeed; ஸுனீதி-ஸுத:-அதி⁴ரோக்ஷ்யன் - the son of Suneeti (who was) about to get up,; ஆசிக்ஷிபே கில ஶிஶு: - the child was severely scolded; ஸுதராம் ஸுருச்யா - as a result by Suruchi; து³ஸ்ஸந்த்யஜா க²லு - indeed (jealousy) cannot be given up; ப⁴வத்-விமுகை²:- - by those who are not devoted to Thee; அஸூயா - jealousy;

Translation
Seeing Uttama, Suruchi's son, seated on his father's lap, Suneeti's son Dhruva also tried to get up. But as a result, the child was severely scolded by Suruchi. Indeed, jealousy cannot be given up, by those who are not devoted to Thee.

ஶ்லோக:
த்வன்மோஹிதே பிதரி பஶ்யதி தா³ரவஶ்யே
தூ³ரம் து³ருக்தினிஹத: ஸ க³தோ நிஜாம்பா³ம் ।
ஸாபி ஸ்வகர்மக³திஸந்தரணாய பும்ஸாம்
த்வத்பாத³மேவ ஶரணம் ஶிஶவே ஶஶம்ஸ ॥3॥

Meaning
த்வத்-மோஹிதே பிதரி - being under the influence of Thy Maayaa, the father; பஶ்யதி தா³ர்-வஶ்யே - seeing hen-pecked; தூ³ரம் து³ருக்தி-னிஹத: ஸ: - he (Dhruva) was taken aback and hurt by the cruel words; க³த: நிஜ-அம்பா³ம் - (he) went to his own mother; ஸா-அபி - she also; ஸ்வ-கர்ம-க³தி-ஸந்தரணாய - for getting over the effects of ones own actions; பும்ஸாம் - for human beings; த்வத்-பாத³ம்-ஏவ ஶரணம் - Thy feet are the only refuge; ஶிஶவே ஶஶம்ஸ - (thus) she advised the child;

Translation
The hen-pecked king who was under the influence of Thy Maayaa, silently looked on as Dhruva was scolded by Suruchi. Hurt for being scolded, Dhruva then went to his own mother Suneeti who advised him that the only way to overcome the evils of ones own past actions is to seek shelter at Thy feet.

ஶ்லோக:
ஆகர்ண்ய ஸோபி ப⁴வத³ர்சனநிஶ்சிதாத்மா
மானீ நிரேத்ய நக³ராத் கில பஞ்சவர்ஷ: ।
ஸந்த்³ருஷ்டனாரத³னிவேதி³தமந்த்ரமார்க-³
ஸ்த்வாமாரராத⁴ தபஸா மது⁴கானநாந்தே ॥4॥

Meaning
ஆகர்ண்ய ஸ:-அபி - hearing, he also; ப⁴வத்-அர்சன-னிஶ்சித-ஆத்மா - determined to devote himself to Thy worship; மானீ நிரேத்ய நக³ராத் - he who had self respect, leaving the town; கில பஞ்ச-வர்ஷ: - (though) indeed five years of age; ஸந்த்³ருஷ்ட-னாரத³ - meeting Naarada,; நிவேதி³த-மந்த்ர-மார்க:³- - and receiving instructions in the path of Mantra (japa); த்வாம்-ஆரராத⁴ தபஸா - propitiated Thee by penance; மது⁴-கானந-அந்தே - at the end of the forest named Madhu;

Translation
The self respecting Dhruva, who was only five years of age, hearing his mother's words, became determined to worship Thee, and so left the town. In the forest of Madhuvana, he propitiated Thee by penance, following the method of Mantra japa and the Mantra given to him by Naarada, whom he had met on the way.

ஶ்லோக:
தாதே விஷண்ணஹ்ருத³யே நக³ரீம் க³தேன
ஶ்ரீனாரதே³ன பரிஸாந்த்விதசித்தவ்ருத்தௌ ।
பா³லஸ்த்வத³ர்பிதமனா: க்ரமவர்தி⁴தேன
நின்யே கடோ²ரதபஸா கில பஞ்சமாஸான் ॥5॥

Meaning
தாதே விஷண்ண-ஹ்ருத³யே - while the father was full of remorse,; நக³ரீம் க³தேன ஶ்ரீனாரதே³ன - by Shri Naarada, who had gone to the town; பரிஸாந்த்வித-சித்த-வ்ருதௌ - (his) upset mind was consoled; பா³ல:-த்வத்-அர்பித-மனா: - (meanwhile) the boy with his mind fixed on Thee; க்ரம-வர்தி⁴தேன - with increasing; நின்யே கடோ²ர-தபஸா - intensity carried out severe penance; கில பஞ்ச-மாஸான் - indeed for five months;

Translation
The king who was full of remorse, was pacified and consoled by Naarada who had gone to the town. Dhruva, the boy with his mind fixed on Thee, spent five months in severe penance, with increasing intensity.

ஶ்லோக:
தாவத்தபோப³லனிருச்ச்²-வஸிதே தி³க³ந்தே
தே³வார்தி²தஸ்த்வமுத³யத்கருணார்த்³ரசேதா: ।
த்வத்³ரூபசித்³ரஸனிலீனமதே: புரஸ்தா-
தா³விர்ப³பூ⁴வித² விபோ⁴ க³ருடா³தி⁴ரூட:⁴ ॥6॥

Meaning
தாவத்-தபோ-ப³ல-னிருச்ச்²-வஸிதே - then,suffocated by the power of penance (of Dhruva); தி³க³ந்தே - all the directions; தே³வ-அர்தி²த:-த்வம்- - to the devas who were seeking relief, (to them) Thou; உத³யத்-கருணா-ஆர்த்³ர-சேதா: - with a mind surging with compassion; த்வத்-ரூப-சித்-ரஸ-னிலீன-மதே: - (Dhruva) whose mind was absorbed with the Supreme Consciousness Bliss, which had assumed Thy form; புரஸ்தாத்- - in front ( of Dhruva); ஆவிர்ப³பூ⁴வித² - (Thou) appeared; விபோ⁴ - O Lord!; க³ருட-³அதி⁴ரூட:⁴ - mounted on Garuda;

Translation
Then, when all around in all the directions there was suffocation by the power of Dhruva's penance, the devas were seeking relief. Then, Thou surging with compassion, appeared seated on Garuda, in front of Dhruva, whose mind was absorbed in contemplation of the Supreme Consciousness Bliss which had assumed Thy form.

ஶ்லோக:
த்வத்³த³ர்ஶனப்ரமத³பா⁴ரதரங்கி³தம் தம்
த்³ருக்³ப்⁴யாம் நிமக்³னமிவ ரூபரஸாயனே தே ।
துஷ்டூஷமாணமவக³ம்ய கபோலதே³ஶே
ஸம்ஸ்ப்ருஷ்டவானஸி த³ரேண ததா²த³ரேண ॥7॥

Meaning
த்வத்-த³ர்ஶன - at the sight of Thee; ப்ரமத-³பா⁴ர-தரங்கி³தம் தம் - which completely overwhelmed him with waves of Bliss and ecstasy; த்³ருக்³ப்⁴யாம் நிமக்³னம்-இவ - as if his eyes were submerged; ரூப-ரஸாயனே தே - in the nectar of Thy entrancing form; துஷ்டூஷமாணம்- - desirous of singing Thy praise; அவக³ம்ய - understanding (Thou); கபோல-தே³ஶே - on the cheek; ஸம்ஸ்ப்ருஷ்டவான்-அஸி - Thou did touch (him); த³ரேண - by the conch; ததா²-ஆத³ரேண - and with great affection;

Translation
At Thy divine sight, Dhruva was completely overwhelmed and was full of the the waves of Bliss and ecstasy. As his eyes were submerged in the nectar of Thy entrancing form he was desirous of singing Thy praise. Realising his incapability of finding words, Thou with great affection touched his cheek with the conch.

ஶ்லோக:
தாவத்³விபோ³த⁴விமலம் ப்ரணுவந்தமேன-
மாபா⁴ஷதா²ஸ்த்வமவக³ம்ய ததீ³யபா⁴வம் ।
ராஜ்யம் சிரம் ஸமனுபூ⁴ய பஜ⁴ஸ்வ பூ⁴ய:
ஸர்வோத்தரம் த்⁴ருவ பத³ம் வினிவ்ருத்திஹீனம் ॥8॥

Meaning
தாவத்- - then; விபோ³த-⁴விமலம் - who had been cleansed of all taint by knowledge; ப்ரணுவந்தம்-ஏனம்- - who was profusely praising Thee; அபா⁴ஷதா²:-த்வம்- - Thou did tell (him); அவக³ம்ய ததீ³ய-பா⁴வம் - knowing what he had in mind; ராஜ்யம் சிரம் ஸமனுபூ⁴ய - (that) after enjoying kingship for long; பஜ⁴ஸ்வ பூ⁴ய: - attain, thereafter,; ஸர்வோத்தரம் த்⁴ருவ பத³ம் - the loftiest of status of Dhruva; வினிவ்ருத்தி-ஹீனம் - from which there is no return;

Translation
He then sang Thy praise profusely, having been purified and enlightened by pure knowledge. Knowing what he had in mind, Thou blessed him to enjoy the kingdom for long and then attain the loftiest of states, that of Dhruva, from where there is no return to lower states.

ஶ்லோக:
இத்யூசிஷி த்வயி க³தே ந்ருபனந்த³னோஸா-
வானந்தி³தாகி²லஜனோ நக³ரீமுபேத: ।
ரேமே சிரம் ப⁴வத³னுக்³ரஹபூர்ணகாம-
ஸ்தாதே க³தே ச வனமாத்³ருதராஜ்யபா⁴ர: ॥9॥

Meaning
இதி-ஊசிஷி - having said so; த்வயி க³தே - when Thou had gone away; ந்ருபனந்த³ன:-அஸௌ- - this prince; ஆனந்தி³த-அகி²ல-ஜன: - pleasing all the people; நக³ரீம்-உபேத: - reached the town; ரேமே சிரம் - enjoyed for a long time; ப⁴வத்-அனுக்³ரஹ-பூர்ண-காம:- - with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace; தாதே க³தே ச வனம்- - and when his father had gone to the forest; ஆத்³ருத-ராஜ்ய-பா⁴ர: - taking over the administration of the kingdom;

Translation
When Thou disappeared after having said so, this prince Dhruva came back to town delighting all people. When his father had gone to the forest, taking over the administration of the kingdom, with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace, he lived happily for a long time.

ஶ்லோக:
யக்ஷேண தே³வ நிஹதே புனருத்தமேஸ்மின்
யக்ஷை: ஸ யுத்³த⁴னிரதோ விரதோ மனூக்த்யா ।
ஶாந்த்யா ப்ரஸன்னஹ்ருத³யாத்³த⁴னதா³து³பேதா-
த்த்வத்³ப⁴க்திமேவ ஸுத்³ருடா⁴மவ்ருணோன்மஹாத்மா ॥1௦॥

Meaning
யக்ஷேண - by Yaksha; தே³வ - O Lord!; நிஹதே புன:- - being killed, then; உத்தமே-அஸ்மின் - this Uttama (Dhruva's brother); யக்ஷை: ஸ யுத்³த-⁴னிரத: - he engaged in a fight with the Yakshas; விரத: மனு-உக்த்யா - and withdrew on Manu's advice; ஶாந்த்யா ப்ரஸன்ன-ஹ்ருத³யாத்- - who was happy at the peaceful nature (of Dhruva); த⁴னதா³த்-உபேதாத் - from Kuber who had approached him (Dhruva); த்வத்-ப⁴க்திம்-ஏவ ஸுத்³ருடா⁴ம்- - Thy firm devotion alone; அவ்ருணோத்- - asked for as a boon; மஹாத்மா - the great souled one (Dhruva);

Translation
When Uttama, Dhruva's brother was killed by Yaksha, Dhruva battled with Yaksha, but withdrew on Manu's advice. Pleased with Dhruva's peaceful nature, Kuber came and offered him a boon, but the great soul asked only for firm devotion to Thee.

ஶ்லோக:
அந்தே ப⁴வத்புருஷனீதவிமானயாதோ
மாத்ரா ஸமம் த்⁴ருவபதே³ முதி³தோயமாஸ்தே ।
ஏவம் ஸ்வப்⁴ருத்யஜனபாலனலோலதீ⁴ஸ்த்வம்
வாதாலயாதி⁴ப நிருந்தி⁴ மமாமயௌகா⁴ன் ॥11॥

Meaning
அந்தே - finally; ப⁴வத்-புருஷ-னீத-விமான-யாத: - going in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants; மாத்ரா ஸமம் - along with his mother; த்⁴ருவபதே³ முதி³த:-அயம்-ஆஸ்தே - (he) is living happily even now in Dhruvaloka; ஏவம் - in this manner; ஸ்வ-ப்⁴ருத்ய-ஜன-பாலன-லோல-தீ⁴:-த்வம் - Thou who are ever eager minded to protect Thy devotees; வாதாலயாதி⁴ப - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; நிருந்தி⁴ - cure; மம-ஆமய-ஔகா⁴ன் - my hoards of ailments;

Translation
Finally, leaving along with his mother in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants, he is even now living happily in Dhruvaloka. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are ever intent on protecting Thy devotees, cure my hoards of ailments.
