புரா ஹயக்³ரீவமஹாஸுரேண ஷஷ்டா²ந்தராந்தோத்³யத³காண்ட³கல்பே ।
நித்³ரோன்முக²ப்³ரஹ்மமுகா²த் ஹ்ருதேஷு வேதே³ஷ்வதி⁴த்ஸ: கில மத்ஸ்யரூபம் ॥1॥
Meaning
புரா - long ago; ஹயக்³ரீவ-மஹா-அஸுரேண - by Hayagreeva, the great Asura; ஷஷ்ட-²அந்தராந்த-உத்³யத்- - at the end of the sixth Manvantara; அகாண்ட-³கல்பே - in the Naimittika Pralaya; நித்³ரா-உன்முக-²ப்³ரஹ்ம-முகா²த்- - from the mouth of Brahmaa who was about to sleep; ஹ்ருதேஷு வேதே³ஷு- - when the Vedas were stolen; அதி⁴த்ஸ: கில - (Thou) desired to assume; மத்ஸ்ய-ரூபம் - the form of a Fish;
Translation
Long ago during the Pralaya which took place at the end of the sixth Manvantara, when Brahmaa was about to sleep, the great Asura Hayagreeva stole the Vedas from his mouth. In order to restore them, Thou decided to incarnate as a fish.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸத்யவ்ரதஸ்ய த்³ரமிலாதி⁴ப⁴ர்துர்னதீ³ஜலே தர்பயதஸ்ததா³னீம் ।
கராஞ்ஜலௌ ஸஞ்ஜ்வலிதாக்ருதிஸ்த்வமத்³ருஶ்யதா²: கஶ்சன பா³லமீன: ॥2॥
Meaning
ஸத்யவ்ரதஸ்ய - of Satyavrata (the sage who was); த்³ரமில-அதி⁴ப⁴ர்து:- - Dramila's king; நதீ³ஜலே - in the waters of the river (Kritamala); தர்பயத:-ததா³னீம் - when he was doing Tarpan; கர-அஞ்ஜலௌ - in his joined palms; ஸஞ்ஜ்வலித-ஆக்ருதி:- - (in a) lustrous form; த்வம்-அத்³ருஶ்யதா²: - Thou appeared to be seen as; கஶ்சன பா³லமீன - some (indescribable) tiny fish;
Translation
Sage Satyavrata, the king of Dramila, was doing Tarpana in the waters of the river Kritamaalaa. In his joined palms, then, Thou appeared as an lustrous indescribable form of a shining tiny fish.
ஶ்லோக:
க்ஷிப்தம் ஜலே த்வாம் சகிதம் விலோக்ய நின்யேம்பு³பாத்ரேண முனி: ஸ்வகே³ஹம் ।
ஸ்வல்பைரஹோபி⁴: கலஶீம் ச கூபம் வாபீம் ஸரஶ்சானஶிஷே விபோ⁴ த்வம் ॥3॥
Meaning
க்ஷிப்தம் ஜலே - when thrown in the water; த்வாம் சகிதம் விலோக்ய - seeing Thee very frightened; நின்யே-அம்பு³-பாத்ரேண - carried (Thee) in the water vessel (kamandalu); முனி: ஸ்வகே³ஹம் - the sage (Satyavrata) to his own house; ஸ்வல்பை:-அஹோபி⁴: - in a few days; கலஶீம் ச கூபம் - the pot and the well; வாபீம் ஸர:-ச- - the tank and the lake; ஆனஶிஷே - (Thou) did outgrow; விபோ⁴ த்வம் - O Lord! Thou;
Translation
When the royal sage threw Thee in the water, seeing Thee very frightened he took Thee to his home in the kamandalu, the water vessel. In a few days, Thou outgrew the pot, the well, the tank and the lake.
ஶ்லோக:
யோக³ப்ரபா⁴வாத்³ப⁴வதா³ஜ்ஞயைவ நீதஸ்ததஸ்த்வம் முனினா பயோதி⁴ம் ।
ப்ருஷ்டோமுனா கல்பதி³த்³ருக்ஷுமேனம் ஸப்தாஹமாஸ்வேதி வத³ன்னயாஸீ: ॥4॥
Meaning
யோக-³ப்ரபா⁴வாத்- - by his yogic powers; ப⁴வத்-ஆஜ்ஞயா-ஏவ - according to Thy command alone; நீத:-தத:-த்வம் - Thou were then taken; முனினா பயோதி⁴ம் - by the sage to the ocean; ப்ருஷ்ட:-அமுனா - requested by him; கல்ப-தி³த்³ருக்ஷும்-ஏனம் - desirous to see the pralaya, to him; ஸப்த-ஆஹம்-ஆஸ்வ-இதி - for seven days wait, thus; வத³ன்-அயாஸீ: - saying (Thou) disappeared;
Translation
Then at Thy command sage Satyavrata took Thee to the ocean by means of his yogic powers. On his expressing a desire to see the Pralaya, Thou asked him to wait for seven days. Then Thou disappeared.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ராப்தே த்வது³க்தேஹனி வாரிதா⁴ராபரிப்லுதே பூ⁴மிதலே முனீந்த்³ர: ।
ஸப்தர்ஷிபி⁴: ஸார்த⁴மபாரவாரிண்யுத்³கூ⁴ர்ணமான: ஶரணம் யயௌ த்வாம் ॥5॥
Meaning
ப்ராப்தே த்வத்-உக்தே-அஹனி - when the day mentioned by Thee arrived; வாரி-தா⁴ரா-பரிப்லுதே பூ⁴மிதலே - by incessant downpour of rain engulfed was the earth; முனீந்த்³ர: ஸப்தர்ஷிபி⁴: ஸார்த⁴ம்- - the great sage along with the Saptarshis; அபார்-வாரிணி-உத்³கூ⁴ர்ணமான: - floundering in the vast limitless tremulous waters; ஶரணம் யயௌ த்வாம் - sought refuge in Thee;
Translation
When the day mentioned by Thee arrived, the earth was engulfed by incessant downpour of rain. The great sage Satyavrata along with the Saptarshis floundering in the limitless expanse of tremulous waters sought refuge in Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
த⁴ராம் த்வதா³தே³ஶகரீமவாப்தாம் நௌரூபிணீமாருருஹுஸ்ததா³ தே
தத்கம்பகம்ப்ரேஷு ச தேஷு பூ⁴யஸ்த்வமம்பு³தே⁴ராவிரபூ⁴ர்மஹீயான் ॥6॥
Meaning
த⁴ராம் த்வத்-ஆதே³ஶகரீம்- - the earth carrying out Thy command; அவாப்தாம் நௌ-ரூபிணீம்- - in the form of a boat approaching; ஆருருஹு:-ததா³ தே - boarded then they; தத்-கம்ப-கம்ப்ரேஷு - terrified by the boat's trembling; ச தேஷு - and when they (were); பூ⁴ய:-த்வம்- - again Thou; அம்பு³தே⁴:-ஆவிர்பூ⁴:- - from the ocean appeared; மஹீயன் - with a huge form (of a fish);
Translation
Ever obedient to Thee the earth in the form of a boat approached at Thy command which they then boarded. And when they were terrified by the boat's trembling, Thou again appeared in the ocean in the form of a huge fish.
ஶ்லோக:
ஜ²ஷாக்ருதிம் யோஜனலக்ஷதீ³ர்கா⁴ம் த³தா⁴னமுச்சைஸ்தரதேஜஸம் த்வாம் ।
நிரீக்ஷ்ய துஷ்டா முனயஸ்த்வது³க்த்யா த்வத்துங்க³ஶ்ருங்கே³ தரணிம் ப³ப³ந்து⁴: ॥7॥
Meaning
ஜ²ஷ-ஆக்ருதிம் - in the form of the fish; யோஜன-லக்ஷ-தீ³ர்கா⁴ம் - a lakh of yojana in length; த³தா⁴னம்-உச்சை:-தர-தேஜஸம் - gaining super exceeding glory; த்வாம் நிரீக்ஷ்ய துஷ்டா: முனய:- - seeing Thee, the sages were very happy; த்வத்-உக்த்யா - as commanded by Thee; த்வத்-துங்க³ஶ்ருங்கே³ - on Thy high horns; தரணிம் ப³ப³ந்து⁴: - (they) tied the boat;
Translation
The sages were delighted to see Thee of exceeding glory in the form of a fish about a lakh of yojanas in length. At Thy command, they tied the boat to Thy high prominent horns.
ஶ்லோக:
ஆக்ருஷ்டனௌகோ முனிமண்ட³லாய ப்ரத³ர்ஶயன் விஶ்வஜக³த்³விபா⁴கா³ன் ।
ஸம்ஸ்தூயமானோ ந்ருவரேண தேன ஜ்ஞானம் பரம் சோபதி³ஶன்னசாரீ: ॥8॥
Meaning
ஆக்ருஷ்ட-னௌக: - pulling the boat; முனி-மண்ட³லாய ப்ரத³ர்ஶயன் - to the group of sages showing; விஶ்வ-ஜக³த்-விபா⁴கா³ன் - the world and its various regions; ஸம்ஸ்தூயமான: - Thee being praised; ந்ருவரேண தேன - by that great king Satyavrata; ஜ்ஞானம் பரம் - (Thou) the highest knowledge; ச-உபதி³ஶன்- - and bestowing; அசாரீ: - moved about;
Translation
As Thou pulled the boat, Thou showed the sages the various regions of the world. The great king Satyavrata sang hymns of Thy glory, and Thou moved about bestowing on him the knowledge of the Aatman.
ஶ்லோக:
கல்பாவதௌ⁴ ஸப்தமுனீன் புரோவத் ப்ரஸ்தா²ப்ய ஸத்யவ்ரதபூ⁴மிபம் தம் ।
வைவஸ்வதாக்²யம் மனுமாத³தா⁴ன: க்ரோதா⁴த்³ ஹயக்³ரீவமபி⁴த்³ருதோபூ⁴: ॥9॥
Meaning
கல்ப-அவதௌ⁴ - At the end of the Pralaya,; ஸப்தமுனீன் - the seven sages; புரோவத் ப்ரஸ்தா²ப்ய - installed them in their places as before; ஸத்யவ்ரத-பூ⁴மிபம் தம் - that king Satyavrata; வைவஸ்வத-ஆக்²யம் - by the name of Vaivasvata; மனும்-ஆத³தா⁴ன: - installed as Manu; க்ரோதா⁴த்-ஹயக்³ரீவம்-அபி⁴த்³ருத:-அபூ⁴: - (then) in great wrath attacked the demon Hayagreeva;
Translation
At the end of the Pralaya, Thou installed the seven sages in their places as before. The king Satyavrata was installed as the Vaivasvata Manu. Then Thou attacked the demon Hayagreeva in great rage.

ஸ்வதுங்க³ஶ்ருங்க³க்ஷதவக்ஷஸம் தம் நிபாத்ய தை³த்யம் நிக³மான் க்³ருஹீத்வா ।
விரிஞ்சயே ப்ரீதஹ்ருதே³ த³தா³ன: ப்ரப⁴ஞ்ஜனாகா³ரபதே ப்ரபாயா: ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஸ்வ-துங்க-³ஶ்ருங்க-³க்ஷத-வக்ஷஸம் - whose chest was torn apart by Thy high horn; தம் நிபாத்ய தை³த்யம் - killing that Asura; நிக³மான் க்³ருஹீத்வா - recovering the Vedas; விரிஞ்சயே ப்ரீதஹ்ருதே³ த³தா³ன: - (Thou) gave to Brahmaa who was very happy; ப்ரப⁴ஞ்ஜன-ஆகா³ரபதே - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ப்ரபாயா: - protect me;
Translation
Thou with Thy great horns tore apart the chest of the Asura Hayagreeva and killed him. Then recovering the Vedas, handed them over to the delighted Brahmaa. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Protect me.
