ஸாந்த்³ரானந்த³தனோ ஹரே நனு புரா தை³வாஸுரே ஸங்க³ரே
த்வத்க்ருத்தா அபி கர்மஶேஷவஶதோ யே தே ந யாதா க³திம் ।
தேஷாம் பூ⁴தலஜன்மனாம் தி³திபு⁴வாம் பா⁴ரேண தூ³ரார்தி³தா
பூ⁴மி: ப்ராப விரிஞ்சமாஶ்ரிதபத³ம் தே³வை: புரைவாக³தை: ॥1॥
Meaning
ஸாந்த்³ர-ஆனந்த-³தனோ - condensed bliss incarnate; ஹரே நனு புரா - O Lord! Even long ago; தை³வ-அஸுரே ஸங்க³ரே - in the battle between the Devas and the Asuras; த்வத்-க்ருத்தா அபி - even though slain by Thee; கர்ம-ஶேஷ-வஶத: யே - because of their residual Karma, those who; தே ந யாதா க³திம் - they did not attain liberation; தேஷாம் பூ⁴தல-ஜன்மனாம் - and so on this earth were born; தி³திபூ⁴வாம் பா⁴ரேண - of those Asuras (by their) burden; தூ³ரார்தி³தா பூ⁴மி: - the tormented earth; ப்ராப விரிஞ்சம்-ஆஶ்ரித-பத³ம் - approached Brahmaa and sought refuge; தே³வை: புரா-ஏவ-ஆக³தை: - the Devas had already reached (there);
Translation
O Lord Hari! Condensed bliss incarnate! Long ago, in the battle between the Devas and Asuras, some of the Asuras, even though slain by Thee,did not get liberation because of their residual Karmas. So they were born again on the earth. Mother earth being very much tormented by their burden sought refuge in Brahmaa and reached his abode, where the Devas had already gone.
ஶ்லோக:
ஹா ஹா து³ர்ஜனபூ⁴ரிபா⁴ரமதி²தாம் பாதோ²னிதௌ⁴ பாதுகா-
மேதாம் பாலய ஹந்த மே விவஶதாம் ஸம்ப்ருச்ச² தே³வானிமான் ।
இத்யாதி³ப்ரசுரப்ரலாபவிவஶாமாலோக்ய தா⁴தா மஹீம்
தே³வானாம் வத³னானி வீக்ஷ்ய பரிதோ த³த்⁴யௌ ப⁴வந்தம் ஹரே ॥2॥
Meaning
ஹா ஹா - Alas!; து³ர்ஜன-பூ⁴ரி-பா⁴ர-மதி²தாம் - by the wicked peoples' immense weight, crushed; பாதோ²னிதௌ⁴ பாதுகாம்- - into the ocean , about to fall; ஏதாம் பாலய ஹந்த - this (me) protect, pray!; மே விவஶதாம் ஸம்ப்ருச்ச² - (about) my helplessness ask; தே³வான்-இமான் இதி-ஆதி³ - these Devas, in this manner; ப்ரசுர-ப்ரலாப-விவஶாம்- - much lamenting and helpless; ஆலோக்ய தா⁴தா மஹீம் - seeing the earth, Brahmaa; தே³வானாம் வத³னானி வீக்ஷ்ய - and also of the Devas' faces, seeing; பரித: - (who had) assembled all around; த³த்⁴யௌ ப⁴வந்தம் - meditated on Thee; ஹரே - O Lord!;
Translation
Crushed by the immense weight of the evil minded people and about to fall in the ocean of the causal waters, this me please protect. Ask the Devas here of my plight,' the Earth lamented. O Lord! Seeing the Earth in such a helpless state and also looking at the faces of the Devas, who had assembled there, Brahmaa meditated on Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ஊசே சாம்பு³ஜபூ⁴ரமூனயி ஸுரா: ஸத்யம் த⁴ரித்ர்யா வசோ
நன்வஸ்யா ப⁴வதாம் ச ரக்ஷணவிதௌ⁴ த³க்ஷோ ஹி லக்ஷ்மீபதி: ।
ஸர்வே ஶர்வபுரஸ்ஸரா வயமிதோ க³த்வா பயோவாரிதி⁴ம்
நத்வா தம் ஸ்துமஹே ஜவாதி³தி யயு: ஸாகம் தவாகேதனம் ॥3॥
Meaning
ஊசே ச-அம்பு³ஜபூ⁴:- - and said Brahmaa; அமூன்-அயி ஸுரா: - to them , O Devas; ஸத்யம் த⁴ரித்ர்யா வச: - true are the Earth's words; நனு-அஸ்யா ப⁴வதாம் ச - indeed hers and yours; ரக்ஷண-விதௌ⁴ - in the matter of protection; த³க்ஷ: ஹி லக்ஷ்மீபதி: - capable alone is Maha Vishnu; ஸர்வே ஶர்வ-புர:-ஸரா - all of us led by Shiva; வயம்-இத: க³த்வா - we, from here going; பய:-வாரிதி⁴ம் - to the Milk Ocean; நத்வா தம் ஸ்துமஹே ஜவாத்- - will prostrate before him and sing his praises, quickly; இதி யயு: ஸாகம் - together (they) went; தவ-ஆகேதனம் - to Thy abode;
Translation
Presently, the lotus born Brahmaa said to the Devas that what the Mother Earth was saying was indeed true. In the matter of the protection of the Devas and the Earth, Maha Vishnu alone was capable. So all of them and Brahmaa, led by Shiva would quickly go from there to the Milk Ocean and prostrate before Him and sing hymns of his prise. So together they went to Thy abode.
ஶ்லோக:
தே முக்³தா⁴னிலஶாலிது³க்³தஜ⁴லதே⁴ஸ்தீரம் க³தா: ஸங்க³தா
யாவத்த்வத்பத³சிந்தனைகமனஸஸ்தாவத் ஸ பாதோ²ஜபூ⁴: ।
த்வத்³வாசம் ஹ்ருத³யே நிஶம்ய ஸகலானானந்த³யன்னூசிவா-
நாக்²யாத: பரமாத்மனா ஸ்வயமஹம் வாக்யம் ததா³கர்ண்யதாம் ॥4॥
Meaning
தே - they; முக்³த-⁴அனில-ஶாலி- - (to the ocean) a pleasant breeze comprising of; து³க்³த-⁴ஜலதே⁴: தீரம் - to the Milk Ocean's shores; க³தா: ஸங்க³தா யாவத்- - went, (and when they were) together standing; த்வத்-பத-³சிந்தன-ஏக-மனஸ:- - and when on Thy feet their minds were fixed and meditating; தாவத் ஸ பாதோ²ஜபூ⁴: - then that lotus born Brahmaa; த்வத்-வாசம் ஹ்ருத³யே நிஶம்ய - Thy words, in his own heart, hearing; ஸகலான்-ஆனந்த³யன்- - making everyone happy,; ஊசிவான்-ஆக்²யாத: - said, '(I) have been told; பரமாத்மனா ஸ்வயம்- - by the supreme Lord Himself; அஹம் வாக்யம் - I (have been told) the words,; தத்-ஆகர்ண்யதாம் - which please listen';
Translation
They together went to the shore of the Milk Ocean where a pleasant breeze was blowing. As they stood there with their minds fixed on Thy feet, meditating, the lotus born Brahmaa in his own heart heard Thy words. Making everyone happy, he told them that he had been spoken to by the Supreme Lord Himself, and asked them to listen to those words.
ஶ்லோக:
ஜானே தீ³னத³ஶாமஹம் தி³விஷதா³ம் பூ⁴மேஶ்ச பீ⁴மைர்ன்ருபை-
ஸ்தத்க்ஷேபாய ப⁴வாமி யாத³வகுலே ஸோஹம் ஸமக்³ராத்மனா ।
தே³வா வ்ருஷ்ணிகுலே ப⁴வந்து கலயா தே³வாங்க³னாஶ்சாவனௌ
மத்ஸேவார்த²மிதி த்வதீ³யவசனம் பாதோ²ஜபூ⁴ரூசிவான் ॥5॥
Meaning
ஜானே தீ³ன-த³ஶாம்-அஹம் - (I) know the sad state; தி³விஷதா³ம் பூ⁴மே:-ச - of the gods and of the earth; பீ⁴மை:-ன்ருபை:- - (caused) by cruel kings; தத்-க்ஷேபாய - for its removal; ப⁴வாமி யாத³வ-குலே - (I) shall be born in the Yaadava clan; ஸ:-அஹம் ஸமக்³ர-ஆத்மனா - that Me with all My powers; தே³வா: வ்ருஷ்ணிகுலே ப⁴வந்து - the gods, in the Vrishni clan, may be born; கலயா - as part incarnation; தே³வாங்க³னா:-ச-அவனௌ - and also the wives of the Devas, on the earth; மத்-ஸேவா-அர்த²ம்- - to serve me; இதி த்வதீ³ய-வசனம் - thus Thy words; பாதோ²ஜபூ⁴:-ஊசிவான் - Brahmaa told;
Translation
"I know the sad state of the gods and of the Earth caused by the cruel kings. For its removal I shall be born in the Yaadava clan with all My powers (as a complete incarnation). The gods may be born in the Vrishni clan as part incarnation, and the wives of the Devas also will be born on the Earth to serve me." Thus Thy words Brahmaa told to the Devas and the Earth.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶ்ருத்வா கர்ணரஸாயனம் தவ வச: ஸர்வேஷு நிர்வாபித-
ஸ்வாந்தேஷ்வீஶ க³தேஷு தாவகக்ருபாபீயூஷத்ருப்தாத்மஸு ।
விக்²யாதே மது⁴ராபுரே கில ப⁴வத்ஸான்னித்⁴யபுண்யோத்தரே
த⁴ன்யாம் தே³வகனந்த³னாமுத³வஹத்³ராஜா ஸ ஶூராத்மஜ: ॥6॥
Meaning
ஶ்ருத்வா கர்ண-ரஸாயனம் - hearing the (words), to the ears nectar like; தவ வச: ஸர்வேஷு - Thy words; நிர்வாபித-ஸ்வாந்தேஷு- - all of them whose minds were freed from sorrow; ஈஶ க³தேஷு - O Lord! (they) having gone; தாவக-க்ருபா- - Thy compassion; பீயூஷ-த்ருப்த-ஆத்மஸு - nectar like satiated them; விக்²யாதே மது⁴ராபுரே கில - in the famous city of Mathura, it is said,; ப⁴வத்-ஸான்னித்⁴ய-புண்ய-உத்தரே - by Thy presence made more sacred; த⁴ன்யாம் தே³வகனந்த³னாம்- - the virtuous daughter of Devak; உத்³வஹத்-ராஜா ஸ - married that king; ஶூராத்மஜ: - the son of Shoorasena;
Translation
Hearing Thy compassionate message which was like nectar to their ears they all went away with their minds freed from sorrow, highly delighted and satiated with Thy sweet words. In the famous city of Mathura which is said to be made more sacred by Thy ever presence there, Devaki, the virtuous daughter of Devaka married the king Vasudeva, the son of Shoorasena.
ஶ்லோக:
உத்³வாஹாவஸிதௌ ததீ³யஸஹஜ: கம்ஸோத² ஸம்மானய-
ந்னேதௌ ஸூததயா க³த: பதி² ரதே² வ்யோமோத்த²யா த்வத்³கி³ரா ।
அஸ்யாஸ்த்வாமதிது³ஷ்டமஷ்டமஸுதோ ஹந்தேதி ஹந்தேரித:
ஸந்த்ராஸாத் ஸ து ஹந்துமந்திகக³தாம் தன்வீம் க்ருபாணீமதா⁴த் ॥7॥
Meaning
உத்³வாஹ்-அவஸிதௌ - when the marriage ceremony was over; ததீ³ய-ஸஹஜ: கம்ஸ:-அத² - her (Devaki's) brother, Kansa then; ஸம்மானயன்-ஏதௌ - honouring these two (the couple); ஸூததயா க³த: பதி² ரதே² - as a charioteer went on the road, in the chariot; வ்யோம-உத்த²யா த்வத்-கி³ரா - rising in the sky, by Thy voice; அஸ்யா:-த்வாம்-அதி-து³ஷ்டம்- - her, you who are very wicked; அஷ்டம-ஸுத: ஹந்தா-இதி - eighth son will be the killer, thus; ஹந்த-ஈரித: - alas, was spoken; ஸந்த்ராஸத் ஸ து - out of great fear, he then; ஹந்தும்-அந்திகக³தாம் தன்வீம் - to kill, who was near by, the beautiful lady; க்ருபாணீம்-அதா⁴த் - the sword , took;
Translation
When the marriage ceremony was over Devaki's brother Kansa, in order to honour the couple became their charioteer and took to the road in the chariot. Rising from the sky Thy voice said, "You who are very wicked will be killed by her eighth son." Alas! Thus spoken, out of great fear, he then drew his sword to kill the beautiful lady who was near by.
ஶ்லோக:
க்³ருஹ்ணானஶ்சிகுரேஷு தாம் க²லமதி: ஶௌரேஶ்சிரம் ஸாந்த்வனை-
ர்னோ முஞ்சன் புனராத்மஜார்பணகி³ரா ப்ரீதோத² யாதோ க்³ருஹான் ।
ஆத்³யம் த்வத்ஸஹஜம் ததா²ர்பிதமபி ஸ்னேஹேன நாஹன்னஸௌ
து³ஷ்டானாமபி தே³வ புஷ்டகருணா த்³ருஷ்டா ஹி தீ⁴ரேகதா³ ॥8॥
Meaning
க்³ருஹ்ணான:-சிகுரேஷு தாம் - catching hold of her by the hair; க²லமதி: - the evil minded one (Kansa); ஶௌரே:-சிரம் ஸாந்த்வனை: - by Shauri's (Vasudeva's) repeated conciliatory words; நோ முஞ்சன் புன:- - not releasing, again then; ஆத்மஜ-அர்பண-கி³ரா - his children offering to surrender, by these words; ப்ரீத:-அத² யாத: க்³ருஹான் - satisfied (he) then went home; ஆத்³யம் த்வத்-ஸஹஜம் - the first born, Thy brother; ததா²-அர்பிதம்-அபி - accordingly, though surrendered; ஸ்னேஹேன ந-அஹன்-அஸௌ - out of love,did not kill, this (Kansa); து³ஷ்டானம்-அபி தே³வ - even in the wicked (people), O Lord!; புஷ்ட-கருணா - great compassion; த்³ருஷ்டா ஹி தீ⁴:-ஏகதா³ - is indeed seen in the heart, once in a while;
Translation
The evil minded Kansa who had caught hold of Devaki by her hair did not release her in spite of the repeated conciliatory words of Shauri (Vasudeva). Then at the offer of Vasudeva to surrender his children, he was satisfied and went home. The first born Thy brother, though handed over to Kansa as promised, he did not kill the child out of love. For, O Lord! even wicked people are found to be very compassionate in the heart, once in a while.

தாவத்த்வன்மனஸைவ நாரத³முனி: ப்ரோசே ஸ போ⁴ஜேஶ்வரம்
யூயம் நன்வஸுரா: ஸுராஶ்ச யத³வோ ஜானாஸி கிம் ந ப்ரபோ⁴ ।
மாயாவீ ஸ ஹரிர்ப⁴வத்³வத⁴க்ருதே பா⁴வீ ஸுரப்ரார்த²னா-
தி³த்யாகர்ண்ய யதூ³னதூ³து⁴னத³ஸௌ ஶௌரேஶ்ச ஸூனூனஹன் ॥9॥
Meaning
தாவத்-த்வத்-மனஸா-ஏவ - at that time by Thy will alone; நாரத³ முனி: - sage Naarada; ப்ரோசே ஸ போ⁴ஜேஶ்வரம் - he told the king of Bhoja (Kansa); யூயம் நனு-அஸுரா: - you all are indeed Asuras; ஸுரா:-ச யாத³வ: - and Yaadavas are Devas; ஜானாஸி கிம் ந ப்ரபோ⁴ - do you not know O King!; மாயாவீ ஸ ஹரி:- - that master of Maayaa, Hari,; ப⁴வத்-வத⁴ க்ருதே - for your killing; பா⁴வீ ஸுர-ப்ரார்த²னாத்- - will be born by Devas' prayer; இதி-ஆகர்ண்ய - this hearing; யதூ³ன்-அதூ³து⁴னத்-அஸௌ - the Yadus, drove out that (Kansa); ஶௌரே:-ச ஸூனூன்-அஹன் - and Vasudeva's sons killed;
Translation
At that time, prompted by Thy will alone Naarada Muni told to the king of Bhoja, Kansa, that did he not know that his clan was of Asuras, whereas, the Yaadavas were Devas. Hari, the master of the Maayaa, will be born to kill him, as result of the prayers of the Devas. Hearing this, Kansa drove out the Yadavaas and killed the sons of Vasudeva.

ப்ராப்தே ஸப்தமக³ர்ப⁴தாமஹிபதௌ த்வத்ப்ரேரணான்மாயயா
நீதே மாத⁴வ ரோஹிணீம் த்வமபி போ⁴:ஸச்சித்ஸுகை²காத்மக: ।
தே³வக்யா ஜட²ரம் விவேஶித² விபோ⁴ ஸம்ஸ்தூயமான: ஸுரை:
ஸ த்வம் க்ருஷ்ண விதூ⁴ய ரோக³படலீம் ப⁴க்திம் பராம் தே³ஹி மே ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ப்ராப்தே ஸப்தம-க³ர்ப⁴தாம்- - entered (the womb of Devaki) at the seventh pregnancy; அஹிபதௌ - when the king of serpents (Aadishesha); த்வத்-ப்ரேரணாத்- - by Thy prompting; மாயயா நீதே - by Yoga Maayaa was taken away; மாத⁴வ ரோஹிணீம் - O Maadhava! To Rohini's (womb); த்வம்-அபி போ⁴:- - Thou also O!; ஸத்-சித்-ஸுக-²ஏக-ஆத்மக: - who are Existence Consciousness and Bliss in one soul; தே³வக்யா ஜட²ரம் விவேஶித² - in Devaki's womb entered; விபோ⁴ ஸம்ஸ்தூயமான: ஸுரை: - O Lord! Being well praised by the Devas; ஸ த்வம் க்ருஷ்ண - That Thou O Krishna; விதூ⁴ய ரோக-³படலீம் - removing the host of ailments; ப⁴க்திம் பராம் தே³ஹி மே - supreme devotion bestow to me;
Translation
At the seventh pregnancy when the king of serpents, Aadishesha entered the womb of Devaki, by Thy prompting, the foetus was transferred to the womb of Rohini by Yoga Maaya. O Maadhava, Thou also who are Existence Consciousness and Bliss alone, entered in Devaki's womb, being well prised by the Devas. O Lord! That Thou O Krishna! removing the host of ailments, bestow to me supreme devotion.
