வ்ரஜேஶ்வரை: ஶௌரிவசோ நிஶம்ய ஸமாவ்ரஜன்னத்⁴வனி பீ⁴தசேதா: ।
நிஷ்பிஷ்டனிஶ்ஶேஷதரும் நிரீக்ஷ்ய கஞ்சித்பதா³ர்த²ம் ஶரணம் க³தஸ்வாம் ॥1॥
Meaning
வ்ரஜேஶ்வர: - the chieftain of Vraja (Nanda Gopa); ஶௌரி-வச: நிஶம்ய - the words of Vasudeva having heard; ஸமாவ்ரஜன்-அத்⁴வனி - returning on the way; பீ⁴த-சேதா: - in utter fear (seeing); நிஷ்பிஷ்ட-னிஶ்ஶேஷ-தரும் - crushed all the trees; நிரீக்ஷ்ய கிஞ்சித்-பதா³ர்த²ம் - seeing (by) some indescribable object; ஶரணம் க³த:-த்வாம் - took refuge in Thee (prayed to Thee);
Translation
The chieftain of Vraja, Nanda Gopa, having heard the words of Vasudeva, was returning home in a hurry. On the way he saw an indescribable form falling down and crushing all the trees around. In utter fear he took refuge in Thee and prayed to Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
நிஶம்ய கோ³பீவசனாது³த³ந்தம் ஸர்வேபி கோ³பா ப⁴யவிஸ்மயாந்தா⁴: ।
த்வத்பாதிதம் கோ⁴ரபிஶாசதே³ஹம் தே³ஹுர்விதூ³ரேத² குடா²ரக்ருத்தம் ॥2॥
Meaning
நிஶம்ய கோ³பீ-வசனாத் - hearing, by the words of the Gopikas; உத³ந்தம் - the news (story of Pootanaa); ஸர்வே-அபி கோ³பா: - all the Gopas; ப⁴ய-விஸ்மய-அந்தா⁴: - by fear and wonder dumbfounded; த்வத்-பாதிதம் - felled by Thee; கோ⁴ர-பிஶாச-தே³ஹம் - the terrible monster's (Pootanaa's) body; தே³ஹு:-விதூ³ரே-அத² - burnt far away, then,; குடா²ர-க்ருத்தம் - (the body) by axes cut (into pieces);
Translation
The Gopas came to know of the whole incident of Pootanaa from the Gopikas and they were dumbfounded with fear and wonder. They then proceeded to cut the body of the terrible monster who was killed by Thee, into pieces with axes and burnt it at a distance.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வத்பீதபூதஸ்தனதச்ச²ரீராத் ஸமுச்சலன்னுச்சதரோ ஹி தூ⁴ம: ।
ஶங்காமதா⁴தா³க³ரவ: கிமேஷ கிம் சாந்த³னோ கௌ³ல்கு³லவோத²வேதி ॥3॥
Meaning
த்வத்-பீத-பூத-ஸ்தன- - by Thee sucked, the purified breasts, from (them); தத்-ஶரீராத் ஸமுச்சலன்- - (from that body) rising up profusely; உச்சதர: ஹி தூ⁴ம: - high up indeed the smoke; ஶங்காம்-அதா⁴த்- - (made) doubt to arise; அக³ரவ: கிம்-ஏஷ - (smell) of agaru is this,; கிம் சாந்த³ன: - (or) is it sandalwood; கௌ³ல்கு³லவ:-அத²வா- - or from gulgulu (frankincense); இதி - thus (the doubt);
Translation
The breasts of Pootanaa were made pure by Thy having sucked them. Therefore, when her body was burnt, huge volumes of smoke rose in the sky, so fragrant that it produced doubt in the minds of the people as to what it was - agaru, sandalwood, or gulgulu (frankincense) incense.
ஶ்லோக:
மத³ங்க³ஸங்க³ஸ்ய ப²லம் ந தூ³ரே க்ஷணேன தாவத் ப⁴வதாமபி ஸ்யாத் ।
இத்யுல்லபன் வல்லவதல்லஜேப்⁴ய: த்வம் பூதனாமாதனுதா²: ஸுக³ந்தி⁴ம் ॥4॥
Meaning
மத்-அங்க-³ஸங்க³ஸ்ய - of my body's contact; ப²லம் ந தூ³ரே - the fruit is not far; க்ஷணேன தாவத் - in no time then; ப⁴வதாம்-அபி ஸ்யாத் - to you also will be (given); இதி-உல்லபன் - thus saying (declaring); வல்லவ-தல்லஜேப்⁴ய: - to the higher ones of the cow-herds; த்வம் - Thou; பூதனாம்-அதனுதா²: - on Pootanaa conferred; ஸுக³ந்தி⁴ம் - fragrance (punya) (blessings);
Translation
Thou declared to the higher ones of the cowherd clan that the fruits of the contact with Thy body were not far behind, and that they too would get them soon. The conferring of fragrance / blessings on Pootanaa was, as though, to prove that.
ஶ்லோக:
சித்ரம் பிஶாச்யா ந ஹத: குமார: சித்ரம் புரைவாகதி² ஶௌரிணேத³ம் ।
இதி ப்ரஶம்ஸன் கில கோ³பலோகோ ப⁴வன்முகா²லோகரஸே ந்யமாங்க்ஷீத் ॥5॥
Meaning
சித்ரம் பிஶாச்யா - what a wonder, by the demoness; ந ஹத: குமார: - was not killed the boy; சித்ரம் புரா-ஏவ- - what a wonder earlier itself; அகதி² ஶௌரிணா-இத³ம் - it was said by Shauri (Vasudeva), this; இதி ப்ரஶம்ஸன் - thus praising; கில கோ³பலோக: - the cowherd people; ப⁴வத்-முக-²ஆலோக-ரஸே - in the joy of looking at Thy face; ந்யமாங்க்ஷீத் - immersed;
Translation
The cowherd people were wonder struck that the boy was not killed by the demoness. They also marvelled at the events foretold by Shauri Vasudeva. Realising this, they were fully immersed in the joy of looking at Thy face.
ஶ்லோக:
தி³னேதி³னேத² ப்ரதிவ்ருத்³த⁴லக்ஷ்மீரக்ஷீணமாங்க³ல்யஶதோ வ்ரஜோயம் ।
ப⁴வன்னிவாஸாத³யி வாஸுதே³வ ப்ரமோத³ஸாந்த்³ர: பரிதோ விரேஜே ॥6॥
Meaning
தி³னே-தி³னே-அத² - day by day then; ப்ரதி-வ்ருத்³த-⁴லக்ஷ்மீ:- - increasing in prosperity; அக்ஷீண-மாங்க³ல்ய-ஶத: - (and) undiminished in numerous auspiciousness; வ்ரஜ:-அயம் - Gokul this; ப⁴வத்-னிவாஸாத்- - by Thy living there; அயி வாஸுதே³வ - O Vaasudeva!; ப்ரமோத-³ஸாந்த்³ர: - full of happiness; பரித: விரேஜே - every where shone;
Translation
O Vaasudeva! Day by day this Gokul developed with prosperity and undiminished auspiciousness as a result of Thy living there. Happiness and undecaying virtue shone everywhere.
ஶ்லோக:
க்³ருஹேஷு தே கோமலரூபஹாஸமித:²கதா²ஸங்குலிதா: கமன்ய: ।
வ்ருத்தேஷு க்ருத்யேஷு ப⁴வன்னிரீக்ஷாஸமாக³தா: ப்ரத்யஹமத்யனந்த³ன் ॥7॥
Meaning
க்³ருஹேஷு - in (their) house; தே கோமல-ரூப-ஹாஸ- - Thy delicate form and smile; மித:²-கதா²-ஸங்குலிதா: - mutually narrated, gathering together; கமன்ய: - the beautiful (Gopikas); வ்ருத்தேஷு க்ருத்யேஷு - having completed their daily chores; ப⁴வத்-னிரீக்ஷா-ஸமாக³தா: - to watch Thee, assembled; ப்ரதி-அஹன்-அதி-அனந்த³ன் - every day, in great joy;
Translation
In their houses the beautiful Gopikas kept talking to each other about Thy charming form and smile. Having completed their daily chores they assembled in great joy to watch Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
அஹோ குமாரோ மயி த³த்தத்³ருஷ்டி: ஸ்மிதம் க்ருதம் மாம் ப்ரதி வத்ஸகேன ।
ஏஹ்யேஹி மாமித்யுபஸார்ய பாணீ த்வயீஶ கிம் கிம் ந க்ருதம் வதூ⁴பி⁴: ॥8॥
Meaning
அஹோ குமார: - O! the boy; மயி த³த்த-த்³ருஷ்டி: - at me looked; ஸ்மிதம் க்ருதம் மாம் ப்ரதி - smile was made in my direction; வத்ஸகேன - by the child; ஏஹி-ஏஹி மாம்-இதி - come come to me, thus; உபஸார்ய பாணீ - stretching out the hands; த்வயி-ஈஶ - towards Thee O Lord!; கிம் கிம் ந க்ருதம் வதூ⁴பி⁴: - what all was not done by the women;
Translation
O the boy is looking at me,' 'his smile is directed towards me', 'come, come to me', thus remarking they stretched out their hands to hold Thee. O Lord! What all was not done by the Gopikas endearingly.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴வத்³வபு:ஸ்பர்ஶனகௌதுகேன கராத்கரம் கோ³பவதூ⁴ஜனேன ।
நீதஸ்த்வமாதாம்ரஸரோஜமாலாவ்யாலம்பி³லோலம்ப³துலாமலாஸீ: ॥9॥
Meaning
ப⁴வத்-வபு:- - Thy body; ஸ்பர்ஶன-கௌதுகேன - in the eagerness to touch; கராத்-கரம் - from hand to hand; கோ³ப-வதூ⁴-ஜனேன - by the Gopika women; நீத:-த்வம்- - were taken Thou; ஆதாம்ர-ஸரோஜ-மாலா- - very red lotus garland; வ்யாலம்பி³-லோலம்ப-³ - (as though on it) moving about, a beetle; துலாம்-அலாஸீ: - resemblance Thou took on;
Translation
They passed Thee from hand to hand, each one of them eager to touch Thy body. As they did so, Thou looked like a honey beetle moving from one very red lotus to another strung together in a garland.
ஶ்லோக:
நிபாயயந்தீ ஸ்தனமங்கக³ம் த்வாம் விலோகயந்தீ வத³னம் ஹஸந்தீ ।
த³ஶாம் யஶோதா³ கதமாம் ந பே⁴ஜே ஸ தாத்³ருஶ: பாஹி ஹரே க³தா³ன்மாம் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
நிபாயயந்தீ ஸ்தனம்- - feeding the breasts; அங்கக³ம் த்வாம் - to who were in the lap, Thee; விலோகயந்தீ வத³னம் - admiring the face; ஹஸந்தீ - (and) smiling; த³ஶாம் யஶோதா³ கதமாம் - states (of joy), Yashodaa, what all; ந பே⁴ஜே - did not attain; ஸ தாத்³ருஶ: பாஹி - That (Thee) who are such, save; ஹரே க³தா³ன்-மாம் - O Lord Hari! Me from diseases;
Translation
O ! What states of joy did Yashodaa, Nanda's wife, not attain as she took Thee in her lap and suckled Thee, with her eyes fixed on Thy smiling face. O Lord Hari! Who are thus! May Thou save me from all ailments.
