ஏவம் தாவத் ப்ராக்ருதப்ரக்ஷயாந்தே
ப்³ராஹ்மே கல்பே ஹ்யாதி³மே லப்³தஜ⁴ன்மா ।
ப்³ரஹ்மா பூ⁴யஸ்த்வத்த ஏவாப்ய வேதா³ன்
ஸ்ருஷ்டிம் சக்ரே பூர்வகல்போபமானாம் ॥1॥
Meaning
ஏவம் தாவத் - in this manner then; ப்ராக்ருத-ப்ரக்ஷய-அந்தே - at the close of the Prakrit Pralaya (total dissolution); ப்³ராஹ்மே கல்பே ஹி ஆதி³மே - in Braahmakalpa which is the very first; லப்³த-⁴ஜன்மா ப்³ரஹ்மா - having come into existence a new Brahmaa; பூ⁴ய: - த்வத்த: - again, from Thee alone; ஏவ-ஆப்ய வேதா³ன் - receiving the knowledge of the Vedas; ஸ்ருஷ்டிம் சக்ரே - started creation; பூர்வ-கல்ப-உபமானாம் - in the same way as in the previous Kalpa;
Translation
At the end of the Prakrit Pralaya, in the first Kalpa which is known as Braahma Kalpa, Brahmaa came into existence. He got the knowledge of the Vedas from Thee alone and began creation in the same way as in the previous Kalpas.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸோயம் சதுர்யுக³ஸஹஸ்ரமிதான்யஹானி
தாவன்மிதாஶ்ச ரஜனீர்ப³ஹுஶோ நினாய ।
நித்³ராத்யஸௌ த்வயி நிலீய ஸமம் ஸ்வஸ்ருஷ்டை-
ர்னைமித்திகப்ரலயமாஹுரதோஸ்ய ராத்ரிம் ॥2॥
Meaning
ஸ: -அயம் - that this (Brahmaa); சது: -யுக-³ஸஹ்ஸ்ர-மிதானி- - over a period of 1000 chaturyugas; அஹானி - (which are his) day; தாவத்-மிதா:- - and as many; ச ரஜனீ: - nights; ப³ஹுஶ: நினாய - many times having spent; நித்³ரதி-அஸௌ - he sleeps; த்வயி நிலீய - merging in Thee; ஸமம் ஸ்வஸ்ருஷ்டை:- - along with all his creation; நைமித்திக-ப்ரலயம்-ஆஹு: - - (this period) is called Naimittika Pralaya; அத: -அஸ்ய ராத்ரிம் - which is his night time;
Translation
One thousand Chaturyugaas make one day for this Brahma, and an equal duration is his night. During his day time he creates and at night he sleeps. His night is called the Naimittika Pralaya, when along with his creation he merges in Thee. Thus he spent many days and nights.
ஶ்லோக:
அஸ்மாத்³ருஶாம் புனரஹர்முக²க்ருத்யதுல்யாம்
ஸ்ருஷ்டிம் கரோத்யனுதி³னம் ஸ ப⁴வத்ப்ரஸாதா³த் ।
ப்ராக்³ப்³ராஹ்மகல்பஜனுஷாம் ச பராயுஷாம் து
ஸுப்தப்ரபோ³த⁴னஸமாஸ்தி ததா³பி ஸ்ருஷ்டி: ॥3॥
Meaning
அஸ்மாத்³ருஶாம் புன: - - like we people (the mortals) again; அஹ: -முக-²க்ருத்ய-துல்யாம் - at the beginning of the day's morning duties; ஸ்ருஷ்டிம் கரோதி-அனுதி³னம் ஸ - he (Brahmaa) does the work of creation every day; ப⁴வத்-ப்ரஸாதா³த் - by Thy grace; ப்ராக்-ப்³ராஹ்மகல்ப-ஜனுஷாம் - earlier than the BraahmaKalpa those who were born; ச பர-ஆயுஷாம் து - and for the eternal souls, however; ஸுப்த-ப்ரபோ³த⁴ன-ஸமா-அஸ்தி - (creation) is like waking up from sleep; ததா³-அபி ஸ்ருஷ்டி: - even when it is creation;
Translation
Brahmaa, by Thy grace performs creation every day just as humans like us wake up in the morning and start our daily duties. For those who were born before the Braahma Kalpa, and for the eternal souls, being born in the new Kalpa is like getting up from sleep.
ஶ்லோக:
பஞ்சாஶத³ப்³த³மது⁴னா ஸ்வவயோர்த⁴ரூப-
மேகம் பரார்த⁴மதிவ்ருத்ய ஹி வர்ததேஸௌ ।
தத்ராந்த்யராத்ரிஜனிதான் கத²யாமி பூ⁴மன்
பஶ்சாத்³தி³னாவதரணே ச ப⁴வத்³விலாஸான் ॥4॥
Meaning
பஞ்சாஶத்-அப்³த³ம்-அது⁴னா - fifty years now; ஸ்வ-வய: -அர்த-⁴ரூபம்- - his half life span; ஏகம் பரார்த⁴ம்- - (which is) one paraardha; அதிவ்ருத்ய ஹி வர்ததே-அஸௌ - having crossed, indeed, remains he (Brahmaa); தத்ர-அந்த்ய-ராத்ரி-ஜனிதான் - there, at the last of those nights, what took place; கத²யாமி - I will narrate; பூ⁴மன் - O Infinite Being!; பஶ்சாத்-தி³ன-அவதரணே ச - and after that, at the beginning of the (next) day; ப⁴வத்-விலாஸான் - (regarding) Thy sportive activities (I shall narrate);
Translation
O Infinite Being! Brahmaa ruling over the present cycle has now completed fifty years of his life,which is known as one paraardha. I shall now narrate Thy sportive activities during the previous night of Brahma and at the beginning of the next morning of the present paraardha.
ஶ்லோக:
தி³னாவஸானேத² ஸரோஜயோனி:
ஸுஷுப்திகாமஸ்த்வயி ஸன்னிலில்யே ।
ஜக³ந்தி ச த்வஜ்ஜட²ரம் ஸமீயு-
ஸ்ததே³த³மேகார்ணவமாஸ விஶ்வம் ॥5॥
Meaning
தி³ன-அவஸானே-அத² - then, at the end of the day; ஸரோஜயோனி: - the lotus born (Brahmaa); ஸுஷுப்தி-காம: - - to sleep desiring; த்வயி ஸன்னிலில்யே - in Thee merged; ஜக³ந்தி ச - and the worlds (also); த்வத்-ஜட²ரம் ஸமீயு: - - in Thy abdomen, merged; தத்-இத³ம்-ஏக-அர்ணவம்-ஆஸ விஶ்வம் - that this universe became one ocean;
Translation
O Lord! At the end of a creative day of Brahmaa, desirous of sleep, he along with the world merged in Thy abdomen in subtle form. At that time the whole universe became one big ocean.
ஶ்லோக:
தவைவ வேஷே ப²ணிராஜி ஶேஷே
ஜலைகஶேஷே பு⁴வனே ஸ்ம ஶேஷே ।
ஆனந்த³ஸாந்த்³ரானுப⁴வஸ்வரூப:
ஸ்வயோக³னித்³ராபரிமுத்³ரிதாத்மா ॥6॥
Meaning
தவ-ஏவ வேஷே - in Thy form alone; ப²ணிராஜி ஶேஷே - (who is) on the king of serpents, sleeping; ஜல-ஏக-ஶேஷே பு⁴வனே - with nothing but waters as the universe; ஸ்ம ஶேஷே - (Thou) reclined (on the serpent bed); ஆனந்த-³ஸாந்த்³ர-அனுப⁴வ-ஸ்வரூப: - of the nature of giving experience saturated bliss; ஸ்வ-யோக-³னித்³ரா-பரிமுத்³ரித-ஆத்மா - (Thou) in yoga slumber engaging Thyself;
Translation
O Lord! At the time when the whole universe was reduced to causal waters, Thou reclined on Aadi Shesha, the king of serpents who is also one of Thy manifestations. Thou were absorbed in yoga nidraa, in a state of pure bliss.
ஶ்லோக:
காலாக்²யஶக்திம் ப்ரலயாவஸானே
ப்ரபோ³த⁴யேத்யாதி³ஶதா கிலாதௌ³ ।
த்வயா ப்ரஸுப்தம் பரிஸுப்தஶக்தி-
வ்ரஜேன தத்ராகி²லஜீவதா⁴ம்னா ॥7॥
Meaning
கால-ஆக்²ய-ஶக்திம் - (Thy) power called Time; ப்ரலய-அவஸானே ப்ரபோ³த⁴ய- - at the end of the deluge awaken me'; இதி-ஆதி³ஶதா - thus commanding, it is said; கில-ஆதௌ³ - at the beginning of (the pralaya); த்வயா ப்ரஸுப்தம் - Thou slept; பரிஸுப்த-ஶக்தி-வ்ரஜேன தத்ர - in whom all the energies had become latent, at that time; அகி²ல ஜீவதா⁴ம்னா - (and who is) the abode of all jivas;
Translation
Thou commanded Thy power which is called Time to awaken Thee at the end of the deluge (Pralaya). Then, at the beginning of the Pralaya Thou resorted to sleep with all the various energies and the jeevas merged in Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
சதுர்யுகா³ணாம் ச ஸஹஸ்ரமேவம்
த்வயி ப்ரஸுப்தே புனரத்³விதீயே ।
காலாக்²யஶக்தி: ப்ரத²மப்ரபு³த்³தா⁴
ப்ராபோ³த⁴யத்த்வாம் கில விஶ்வனாத² ॥8॥
Meaning
சதுர்யுகா³ணாம் ச ஸஹஸ்ரம்- - and for a thousand chaturygas; ஏவம் த்வயி ப்ரஸுப்தே - thus Thou having slept; புன: -அத்³விதீயே - then with no one else besides Thou; கால-ஆக்²ய-ஶக்தி: - the power of Time; ப்ரத²ம-ப்ரபு³த்³தா⁴ - first waking up; ப்ரபோ³த⁴யத்-த்வாம் கில - awakened Thee, it is said; விஶ்வனாத² - O Lord of the Universe!;
Translation
O Unparalleled Lord of the universe! When thus during the Naimittika Pralaya consisting of a thousand chaturyugas, Thou had slept, the power of time (Kaala Shakti) woke up first and awakened Thee from Thy slumber.
ஶ்லோக:
விபு³த்⁴ய ச த்வம் ஜலக³ர்ப⁴ஶாயின்
விலோக்ய லோகானகி²லான் ப்ரலீனான் ।
தேஷ்வேவ ஸூக்ஷ்மாத்மதயா நிஜாந்த: -
ஸ்தி²தேஷு விஶ்வேஷு த³தா³த² த்³ருஷ்டிம் ॥9॥
Meaning
விபு³த்⁴ய ச த்வம் - and after waking up Thou; ஜல-க³ர்ப-⁴ஶாயின் - who were reclining in the causal waters; விலோக்ய - beholding; லோகான்-அகி²லான் ப்ரலீனான் - all the worlds merged (in Thee); தேஷு-ஏவ ஸூக்ஷ்ம-ஆத்மதயா - on those (worlds) (which were )in subtle form; நிஜாந்த: - ஸ்தி²தேஷு - inside Thee only residing; விஶ்வேஷு - on all of them; த³தா³த² த்³ருஷ்டிம் - (Thou) cast Thy glance;
Translation
O Lord! Thou who were reclining in the causal waters, on waking up saw all the worlds merged in Thyself in subtle form. Thou then cast Thy glance on all of them.
ஶ்லோக:
ததஸ்த்வதீ³யாத³யி நாபி⁴ரந்த்⁴ரா-
து³த³ஞ்சிதம் கிஞ்சன தி³வ்யபத்³மம் ।
நிலீனநிஶ்ஶேஷபதா³ர்த²மாலா-
ஸங்க்ஷேபரூபம் முகுலாயமானம் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
தத: த்வதீ³யாத்- - then, from Thy; அயி - O Lord!; நாபி⁴ரந்த்⁴ராத்- - navel hole; உத³ஞ்சிதம் - emerged; கிஞ்சன தி³வ்ய-பத்³மம் - a wonderful brilliant lotus; நிலீன-னிஶ்ஶேஷ-பதா³ர்த-²மாலா- - all the things which had remained merged in Thee; ஸங்க்ஷேப-ரூபம் - contained in subtle form; முகுலாயமானம் - which was in the shape of a bud;
Translation
Then, O Lord! There emerged from Thy naval hole a wonderful divine lotus in the form of a bud, containing in subtle form all the worlds that remained merged in Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ததே³தத³ம்போ⁴ருஹகுட்³மலம் தே
கலேவராத் தோயபதே² ப்ரரூட⁴ம் ।
ப³ஹிர்னிரீதம் பரித: ஸ்பு²ரத்³பி⁴:
ஸ்வதா⁴மபி⁴ர்த்⁴வாந்தமலம் ந்யக்ருந்தத் ॥11॥
Meaning
தத்-ஏதத்³-அம்போ⁴ருஹ-குட்³மலம் - that aforesaid lotus bud; தே கலேவராத் - (originating from) Thy body (navel); தோய-பதே² ப்ரரூட⁴ம் - rising in the causal waters; ப³ஹி: - நிரீதம் - and coming out above (the waters); பரித: ஸ்பு²ரத்³பி⁴: ஸ்வதா⁴மபி⁴:- - by its brilliance spreading all around; த்⁴வாந்தம்-அலம் ந்யக்ருந்தத் - completely removed the darkness;
Translation
O Lord! that divine lotus bud, which originated from Thy body, rose above the causal waters and with its brilliance, removed the surrounding darkness completely.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸம்பு²ல்லபத்ரே நிதராம் விசித்ரே
தஸ்மின் ப⁴வத்³வீர்யத்⁴ருதே ஸரோஜே ।
ஸ பத்³மஜன்மா விதி⁴ராவிராஸீத்
ஸ்வயம்ப்ரபு³த்³தா⁴கி²லவேத³ராஶி: ॥12॥
Meaning
ஸம்பு²ல்ல-பத்ரே - in the fully blossomed petals; நிதராம் விசித்ரே - of the most wonderful; தஸ்மின் - in that; ப⁴வத்-வீர்யத்⁴ருதே - (which was) supported by Thy yogic prowess; ஸரோஜே - in that lotus; ஸ பத்³மஜன்மா விதி⁴: - - the lotus born Brahmaa (the creator); ஆவிராஸீத் - appeared; ஸ்வயம்-ப்ரபு³த்³த-⁴அகி²ல-வேத-³ராஶி: - with all the Vedas self manifested in him;
Translation
O Lord! In the fully blossomed petals of the wonderful lotus, which was supported by Thy yogic prowess, the lotus born Brahmaa (the creator) appeared with all the Vedas self manifested in him.
ஶ்லோக:
அஸ்மின் பராத்மன் நனு பாத்³மகல்பே
த்வமித்த²முத்தா²பிதபத்³மயோனி: ।
அனந்தபூ⁴மா மம ரோக³ராஶிம்
நிருந்தி⁴ வாதாலயவாஸ விஷ்ணோ ॥13॥
Meaning
அஸ்மின் - in this; பராத்மன் - O Supreme Being; நனு பாத்³மகல்பே - Paadma Kalpa; த்வம்-இத்த²ம்- - Thou in this manner; உத்தா²பித-பத்³மயோனி: - caused to originate the lotus born Brahmaa; அனந்தபூ⁴மா - O Thou of infinite glory!; மம ரோக³ராஶிம் நிருந்தி⁴ - pray, eradicate my hoards of ailments; வாதாலயவாஸ விஷ்ணோ - O Vishnu Dweller of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
O Supreme Lord of incomprehensible powers, in this age known as the Paadma Kalpa, Thou thus brought into existence the Creator Brahmaa. O Lord Vishnu! who has manifested in the temple of Guruvaayur, please eradicate my ailments.
