ஸ்தம்பே⁴ க⁴ட்டயதோ ஹிரண்யகஶிபோ: கர்ணௌ ஸமாசூர்ணய-
ந்னாகூ⁴ர்ணஜ்ஜக³த³ண்ட³குண்ட³குஹரோ கோ⁴ரஸ்தவாபூ⁴த்³ரவ: ।
ஶ்ருத்வா யம் கில தை³த்யராஜஹ்ருத³யே பூர்வம் கதா³ப்யஶ்ருதம்
கம்ப: கஶ்சன ஸம்பபாத சலிதோப்யம்போ⁴ஜபூ⁴ர்விஷ்டராத் ॥1॥
Meaning
ஸ்தம்பே⁴ க⁴ட்டயத: - (as he) was striking at the pillar; ஹிரண்யகஶிபோ: - of Hiranyakashipu; கர்ணௌ ஸமாசூர்ணயன்- - splitting the ears; ஆகூ⁴ர்ணத்-ஜக³த்-அண்ட-³குண்ட-³குஹர: - making everything inside the vessel of Brahmaanda tremble; கோ⁴ர:-தவ-அபூ⁴த்-ரவ: - (so) frightening was Thy roar; ஶ்ருத்வா யம் கில - hearing which indeed; தை³த்யராஜ ஹ்ருத³யே - in the heart of the Asura king; பூர்வம் கதா³பி-அஶ்ருதம் - (the roar) which had never been heard before; கம்ப: கஶ்சன ஸம்பபாத - an indescribable trembling arose; சலித:-அபி-அம்போ⁴ஜபூ⁴:- - shaken even was Brahmaa; விஷ்டராத் - on his throne (in Satyaloka);
Translation
As Hiranyakashipu struck at the pillar, he heard a terrific sound which split his ears.Thy roar was so fierce that it made everything inside the vessel of Brahmaanda tremble. Hearing this sound which was never heard before, the Asura king felt an awesome and incredible shiver within. Even the lotus born Brahmaa was shaken from his throne.

Meaning
தை³த்யே தி³க்ஷு விஸ்ருஷ்ட-சக்ஷுஷி - as the Asura with his eyes rolling all around; மஹாஸம்ரம்பி⁴ணி - in great excitement; ஸ்தம்ப⁴த: ஸம்பூ⁴தம் - emerging from the pillar; ந ம்ருகா³த்மகம் - (a form) neither of beast; ந மனுஜாகாரம் - nor of a human being; வபு:-தே விபோ⁴ - Thy form O Lord! (seeing); கிம் கிம் பீ⁴ஷணம்-ஏதத்- - What o what this terrifying; அத்³பு⁴தம்-இதி - and wondrous (being) is, thus; வ்யுத்³ப்⁴ராந்த-சித்தே-அஸுரே - when the Asura was in an agitated state of mind; விஸ்பூ²ர்ஜத்- - expanding with; த⁴வல-உக்³ர-ரோம- - white sharp hair; விகஸத்-வர்ஷ்மா - shining body; ஸமாஜ்ரும்ப⁴தா²: - Thou grew up into;
Translation
As the Asura cast his eyes all around in great confused excitement, from the pillar emerged, O Lord! Thy form which was neither of a beast nor of a human being. While the Asura in an agitated state of mind wondered as to what this terrific wondrous being might be, Thou expanded into a form with a shining body on which sharp hair was bristling.

Meaning
தப்த-ஸ்வர்ண-ஸவர்ண- - of molten gold in colour; கூ⁴ர்ணத்- - rolling; அதி-ருக்ஷ-ஆக்ஷம் - and very fierce eyes; ஸடாகேஸர ப்ரோத்கம்ப- - the mane trembling; ப்ரனிகும்பி³த்-அம்ப³ரம்- - covering the skies; அஹோ ஜீயத்- - O Hail! To it; தவ-இத³ம் வபு: - Thy this form; வ்யாத்த-வ்யாப்த-மஹாத³ரீ-ஸக-²முக²ம் - (with an) open wide cave like mouth; க²ட்³க-³உக்³ர-வல்க³ன்-மஹா-ஜிஹ்வா-னிர்கம³ - like the pointed end of a sword, huge and lolling out tongue; அத்³ருஶ்யமான-ஸுமஹா-த³ம்ஷ்ட்ராயுக-³உட்³டா³மரம் - revealing a pair of huge molars extremely frightening;
Translation
O Hail unto that form of Thine with fierce rolling eyes shining like molten gold, with quivering mane overcastting the skies, with a wide open cave like mouth, with a sword like huge tongue lolling out, revealing a pair of huge extremely fierce molars.

Meaning
உத்ஸர்பத்-வலிப⁴ங்க-³ - the folds of the skin drawn upwards; பீ⁴ஷண-ஹனு - rendering the look of the chin fierce; ஹ்ரஸ்வ-ஸ்த²வீய:-தர-க்³ரீவம் - short and very stout neck; பீவர-தோ³ஶ்ஶத-உத்³க³த-னக-² - of the stout hundred hands' nails, emitting; க்ரூராம்ஶு-தூ³ரோல்ப³ணம் - most terrifying sharp rays; வ்யோம-உல்லங்கி⁴ - the skies outreaching; க⁴னாக⁴ன-உபம-க⁴ன-ப்ரத்⁴வான- - the fierce roar like the thunder of a thick cloud; நிர்தா⁴வித-ஸ்பர்தா⁴லு-ப்ரகரம் - driving away the host of rivals; நமாமி - I salute; ப⁴வத:-தத்-னாரஸிம்ஹம் வபு: - that form of Thine as Narasihma;
Translation
I salute Thy Man-Lion form with chin rendered forbidding due to the folds of the skin drawn upwards (while roaring), with a short stout neck, with a hundred powerful arms projecting ferocious lustrous claws, with a terrific burst of roaring voice, resounding the skies and driving away the hosts of rivals in fright.

Meaning
நூனம் விஷ்ணு:-அயம் - He must indeed be Vishnu!; நிஹன்மி-அமும்-இதி - I will kill him saying so; ப்⁴ராம்யத்-க³தா³-பீ⁴ஷணம் - whirling a formidable mace; தை³த்யேந்த்³ரம் ஸமுபாத்³ரவந்தம்- - the Asura king running towards Thee; அத்⁴ருதா² தோ³ர்ப்⁴யாம் ப்ருது²ப்⁴யாம்-அமும் - (Thou) caught hold of him with two stout arms; வீர: நிர்க³லித:-அத² - that clever (Asura) slipped out and then; க²ட்³க-³ப²லகௌ க்³ருஹ்ணன்- - holding a sword and shield; விசித்ர-ஶ்ரமான் வ்யாவ்ருண்வன் - all kinds of astonishing feats displaying; புன:-ஆபபாத - again rushed; பு⁴வன-க்³ராஸ-உத்³யதம் த்வாம்- - in a mood to swallow the whole universe, towards Thee; அஹோ - o what wonder;
Translation
The Asura king rushed towards Thee, whirling a formidable mace and saying that this must be Vishnu and that he would kill him. He was caught hold of by Thy two stout arms. The mighty Asura slipped out from Thy clutches. Then grabbing a sword and shield, he displayed astonishing feats of swordsmanship and rushed towards Thee, who were in a mood to swallow all the worlds. O what a wonder!

ப்⁴ராம்யந்தம் தி³திஜாத⁴மம் புனரபி ப்ரோத்³க்³ருஹ்ய தோ³ர்ப்⁴யாம் ஜவாத்

Meaning
ப்⁴ராம்யந்தம் தி³திஜ-அத⁴மம் - the wicked Asura who was circling around; புன:-அபி - once again; ப்ரோத்³க்³ருஹ்ய தோ³ர்ப்⁴யாம் ஜவாத் - catching with two hands quickly; த்³வாரே-அத-²உருயுகே³ நிபாத்ய - at the doorway, then,on the two thighs throwing; நக²ரான் வ்யுத்கா²ய வக்ஷோபு⁴வி - thrusting (Thy) nails on his chest and tearing; நிர்பி⁴ந்த³ன்- - and tearing; அதி⁴-க³ர்ப-⁴னிர்ப⁴ர-க³லத்-ரக்த-அம்பு³ - gushing out from within the blood fluid; ப³த்³தோ⁴த்ஸவம் பாயம் பாயம்- - drinking and drinking with glee; உதை³ரய: ப³ஹு - many times emitted; ஜக³த்-ஸம்ஹாரி-ஸிம்ஹ-ஆரவான் - the universe destroying lion roars;
Translation
Catching hold of the wicked Asura quickly with two hands, who was circling around, Thou threw him flat on Thy lap in the doorway, deeply embedded Thy nails in his chest and tore it open. Thou then with great glee drank again and again the blood that gushed out of the Asura's body,fiercely roaring with lion roars which were powerful enough to shatter the whole universe.

த்யக்த்வா தம் ஹதமாஶு ரக்தலஹரீஸிக்தோன்னமத்³வர்ஷ்மணி
ப்ரத்யுத்பத்ய ஸமஸ்ததை³த்யபடலீம் சாகா²த்³யமானே த்வயி ।

Meaning
த்யக்த்வா தம் ஹதம்- - leaving him who had been killed; ஆஶு - quickly; ரக்த-லஹரீ-ஸிக்த-உன்னமத்-வர்ஷ்மணி - bathed in blood with (Thy) gigantic body; ப்ரத்யுத்பத்ய - leaping (and); ஸமஸ்த-தை³த்ய-படலீம் - the entire host of Asuras; ச-ஆகா²த்³யமானே த்வயி - when being eaten by thee; ப்⁴ராம்யத்³-பூ⁴மி - all the worlds whirled; விகம்பித-அம்பு³தி⁴குலம் - the oceans got turbulent; வ்யாலோல-ஶைல-உத்கரம் - all the mountain ranges shook; ப்ரோத்ஸ்ரர்பத்-க²சரம் - scattered the stars and heavenly bodies; சராசரம்- - (as well) all the animate and inanimate; அஹோ - O what a wonder!; து³:ஸ்தா²ம்-அவஸ்தா²ம் த³தௌ⁴ - unbearable (chaotic state) overtook (prevailed);
Translation
Abandoning the dead Asura, Thou sprang up hastily with Thy gigantic body bathed in blood and started eating up the entire host of Asuras. O What a wonder! All the worlds whirled, the oceans got turbulent, the mountains trembled, the stars and celestial luminaries and all animate and inanimate things got scattered. A state of total and unbearable chaos took over.

தாவன்மாம்ஸவபாகராலவபுஷம் கோ⁴ராந்த்ரமாலாத⁴ரம்
த்வாம் மத்⁴யேஸப⁴மித்³த⁴கோபமுஷிதம் து³ர்வாரகு³ர்வாரவம் ।
அப்⁴யேதும் ந ஶஶாக கோபி பு⁴வனே தூ³ரே ஸ்தி²தா பீ⁴ரவ:
ஸர்வே ஶர்வவிரிஞ்சவாஸவமுகா²: ப்ரத்யேகமஸ்தோஷத ॥8॥
Meaning
தாவத்- - then; மாம்ஸ-வபா-கரால-வபுஷம் - (with Thy) body terrific being smeared with flesh and fat; கோ⁴ர-அந்த்ர-மாலா-த⁴ரம் - a frightening garland of intestines wearing; த்வாம் மத்⁴யே-ஸப⁴ம்- - Thee in the midst of the assembly; இத்³த-⁴கோபம்-உஷிதம் - sitting in great anger; து³ர்வார-கு³ர்வா-ரவம் - (emitting) unbearable fierce roars; அப்⁴யேதும் ந ஶஶாக - could not approach (Thee); க:-அபி பு⁴வனே - anyone in the world; தூ³ரே ஸ்தி²தா பீ⁴ரவ: ஸர்வே - standing far away everyone was afraid; ஶர்வ-விரிஞ்ச-வஸவமுகா²: - Shiva, Brahmaan Indra, and others; ப்ரத்யேகம்-அஸ்தோஷத - each one praised (and tried to pacify) Thee;
Translation
Thou sat in the assemblage roaring again and again in great wrath with Thy body forbiddingly terrific being smeared with flesh and fat and garlanded by the intestines (of Hiranyakashipu). Overwhelmed with awe no one dared to approach Thee, and stood far away. Even Shiva, Brahmaa, Indra and others kept at a distance, singing Thy praises individually (and tried to pacify Thee).

பூ⁴யோப்யக்ஷதரோஷதா⁴ம்னி ப⁴வதி ப்³ரஹ்மாஜ்ஞயா பா³லகே

ஸ்தஸ்யாகாமதி⁴யோபி தேனித² வரம் லோகாய சானுக்³ரஹம் ॥9॥
Meaning
பூ⁴ய:-அபி- - even then; அக்ஷத-ரோஷ-தா⁴ம்னி - still in an abode of unabated rage; ப⁴வதி - (when) Thou were; ப்³ரஹ்மா-ஆஜ்ஞயா - by Brahmaa's instruction; பா³லகே ப்ரஹ்லாதே³ பத³யோ:-னமதி - when the boy Prahlaada prostrated at Thy feet; அபப⁴யே - without any fear; காருண்ய-பா⁴ர-ஆகுல: - overwhelmed with extreme compassion; ஶாந்த:-த்வம் - calmed Thou; கரம-அஸ்ய மூர்த்⁴னி ஸமதா⁴: - Thy hand on his head, placed; ஸ்தோத்ரை:-அத-²உத்³கா³யத:-தஸ்ய - who was loudly singing Thy praise, then, to him; அகாமம்-தி⁴ய:-அபி - though he did not have any desire; தேனித² வரம் - (Thou) gave a boon; லோகாய ச-அனுக்³ரஹம் - (which was) also for the good of the world;
Translation
Even then, when Thou were still in a state of unabated rage, by Brahmaa's instruction the boy Prahlaad free of fear prostrated at Thy feet. Thou calmed down being overcome by love and compassion and placed Thy hand on Prahlaad's head. He burst into a hymn in praise of Thee and unasked for received a boon from Thee which was for the benefit of the whole world.

ஏவம் நாடிதரௌத்³ரசேஷ்டித விபோ⁴ ஶ்ரீதாபனீயாபி⁴த-⁴

Meaning
ஏவம் - in this way; நாடித-ரௌத்³ர-சேஷ்டித - Thou enacted a drama of ferocity; விபோ⁴ - O All Pervading Lord!; ஶ்ரீதாபனீய-அபி⁴த-⁴ஶ்ருதி-அந்தஸ்உட- - as described in the Shruti named Shri Taapaneeya; கீ³த-ஸர்வ-மஹிமன்- - and all the hymns singing Thy excellences; அத்யந்த-ஶுத்³த-⁴ஆக்ருதே - O Thee! Who are absolutely pure (free from anger); தத்-தாத்³ருக்-னிகி²ல-உத்தரம் - Thee who are superseding everything else; புன:-அஹோ - again, O Lord!; க:-த்வாம் பர: லங்க⁴யேத் - Who can overcome (outshine) Thee; ப்ரஹ்லாத³ப்ரியே - O Beloved of Prahlaad!; ஹே மருத்புரபதே - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ஸர்வ-ஆமயாத்-பாஹி மாம் - be pleased to cure me of all my ailments;
Translation
In this way Thou enacted a drama of ferocity. O All Pervading Lord! As described in the Shruti named Taapaneeya, as per the hymns of Thy excellences sung therein,Thou are absolutely pure and free from anger. Thou who are thus, superseding everything else, O Lord! who can overcome Thee? O Thou who are fond of Prahlaad! O Lord of Guruvaayur! be pleased to cure me of all my ailments.
