வைவஸ்வதாக்²யமனுபுத்ரனபா⁴கஜ³ாத-
நாபா⁴க³னாமகனரேந்த்³ரஸுதோம்ப³ரீஷ: ।
ஸப்தார்ணவாவ்ருதமஹீத³யிதோபி ரேமே
த்வத்ஸங்கி³ஷு த்வயி ச மக்³னமனாஸ்ஸதை³வ ॥1॥
Meaning
வைவஸ்வத-ஆக்²ய-மனு- - Vaivasvat named, the Manu; புத்ர-னபா⁴க-³ - his son Nabhaag; ஜாத-னாபா⁴க-³னாமக- - to him was born Naabhaag named (son); நரேந்த்³ர-ஸுத:-அம்ப³ரீஷ: - (his) son king Ambareesh; ஸப்த-அர்ணவ-ஆவ்ருத- - by the seven seas surrounded; மஹீ-த³யித:அபி - the earth even though he ruled; ரேமே த்வத்-ஸங்கி³ஷு - (he) delighted in Thy devotees' (company); த்வயி ச - and in Thyself; மக்³ன-மனா:-ஸதை³வ - whole heartedly, always;
Translation
Nabhaag was the son of Vaivasvata Manu, to whom Naabhaaga was born. To him king Ambareesh was born who ruled the earth surrounded by the seven seas. Yet, Ambareesh always delighted in serving Thy devotees and in worshipping Thee whole heartedly.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வத்ப்ரீதயே ஸகலமேவ விதன்வதோஸ்ய
ப⁴க்த்யைவ தே³வ நசிராத³ப்⁴ருதா²: ப்ரஸாத³ம் ।
யேனாஸ்ய யாசனம்ருதேப்யபி⁴ரக்ஷணார்த²ம்
சக்ரம் ப⁴வான் ப்ரவிததார ஸஹஸ்ரதா⁴ரம் ॥2॥
Meaning
த்வத்-ப்ரீதயே - for Thy pleasure; ஸகலம்-ஏவ விதன்வத:- - everything even performing everything; அஸ்ய ப⁴க்த்யா-ஏவ - by his devotion alone; தே³வ - O Lord!; நசிராத்-அப்⁴ருதா²: ப்ரஸாத³ம் - in no time he gained Thy grace; யேன- - by which; அஸ்ய யாசனம்-ருதே-அபி- - even without his asking; அபி⁴ரக்ஷண-அர்த²ம் - for (his) protection; சக்ரம் ப⁴வான் ப்ரவிததார - (Thy) discus Thou employed; ஸஹஸ்ரதா⁴ரம் - which is thousand pointed;
Translation
Performing all his action in total dedication to Thee, O Lord! He soon gained Thy grace. By virtue of which, even without his asking, Thou commissioned Thy thousand pointed discus to protect him.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ த்³வாத³ஶீவ்ரதமதோ² ப⁴வத³ர்சனார்த²ம்
வர்ஷம் த³தௌ⁴ மது⁴வனே யமுனோபகண்டே² ।
பத்ன்யா ஸமம் ஸுமனஸா மஹதீம் விதன்வன்
பூஜாம் த்³விஜேஷு விஸ்ருஜன் பஶுஷஷ்டிகோடிம் ॥3॥
Meaning
ஸ த்³வாத³ஶீ-வ்ரதம்-அத:² - he, the rites of Dwaadashi, then,; ப⁴வத்-அர்சன-அர்த²ம் - to worship Thee; வர்ஷம் த³தௌ⁴ மது⁴வனே - for one year, observed in Madhuvana; யமுனா-உபகண்டே² - near the river Yamuna; பத்ன்யா ஸமம் ஸுமனஸா - with his pious wife; மஹதீம் விதன்வன் பூஜாம் - he performed a great poojaa; த்³விஜேஷு விஸ்ருஜன் - to the priests giving away; பஶு-ஷஷ்டி-கோடிம் - sixty crores of cows;
Translation
In order to worship Thee, along with his pious wife, he observed the Dwaadashi fasting rites for one year on the banks of the Yamuna river, in Maduvana. He conducted a great poojaa, honouring holy men and by giving away to them sixty crores of cows.
ஶ்லோக:
தத்ராத² பாரணதி³னே ப⁴வத³ர்சனாந்தே
து³ர்வாஸஸாஸ்ய முனினா ப⁴வனம் ப்ரபேதே³ ।
போ⁴க்தும் வ்ருதஶ்சஸ ந்ருபேண பரார்திஶீலோ
மந்த³ம் ஜகா³ம யமுனாம் நியமான்விதா⁴ஸ்யன் ॥4॥
Meaning
தத்ர-அத² பாரண-தி³னே - there then on the day of taking the food (breaking the fast); ப⁴வத்-அர்சன-அந்தே - after Thy worship was performed; து³ர்வாஸஸா-அஸ்ய முனினா - the sage Durvaasaa, his (of the king Ambareesh); ப⁴வனம் ப்ரபேதே³ - palace reached; போ⁴க்தும் வ்ருத:-ச ஸ ந்ருபேண - and he was invited for food by the king; பரார்திஶீல: - (the sage) who had the habit of being inconsiderate; மந்த³ம் ஜகா³ம யமுனாம் - leisurely approached the river Yamuna; நியமான்-விதா⁴ஸ்யன் - to perform his obligatory rites;
Translation
Then, there, after Thy worship was performed, on the day of the breaking of the fast and taking food, the sage Durvaasaa arrived at the king's palace, and was invited to take food. The sage who was by nature inconsiderate and a trouble giver, leisurely went to the river Yamunaa to perform his obligatory rites.
ஶ்லோக:
ராஜ்ஞாத² பாரணமுஹூர்தஸமாப்திகே²தா³-
த்³வாரைவ பாரணமகாரி ப⁴வத்பரேண ।
ப்ராப்தோ முனிஸ்தத³த² தி³வ்யத்³ருஶா விஜானந்
க்ஷிப்யன் க்ருதோ⁴த்³த்⁴ருதஜடோ விததான க்ருத்யாம் ॥5॥
Meaning
ராஜ்ஞா-அத² - then by the king; பாரண-முஹுர்த-ஸமாப்தி-கே²தா³த் - because of the anxiety of the expiry of the time of taking food; வாரா-ஏவ பாரணம்-அகாரி - by taking water alone, the fast was broken; ப⁴வத்-பரேண - (by the king who) was devoted to Thee; ப்ராப்த: முனி:-தத்-அத² - then that sage arriving; தி³வ்ய-த்³ருஶா விஜானந் - by his divine insight knowing; க்ஷிப்யன் - rebuking (the king); க்ருதா⁴-உத்³த்⁴ருத-ஜட: - out of anger plucked his matted hair; விததான க்ருத்யாம் - and created Krityaa (an evil spirit);
Translation
The king was anxious as the time was expiring for taking food. So, the king Ambareesha who was devoted to Thee broke the fast by taking a sip of water. When the sage arrived and came to know by his divine insight of what had happened, he rebuked the king and angrily plucked his matted hair and created Krityaa an evil spirit.
ஶ்லோக:
க்ருத்யாம் ச தாமஸித⁴ராம் பு⁴வனம் த³ஹந்தீ-
மக்³ரேபி⁴வீக்ஷ்யன்ருபதிர்ன பதா³ச்சகம்பே ।
த்வத்³ப⁴க்தபா³த⁴மபி⁴வீக்ஷ்ய ஸுத³ர்ஶனம் தே
க்ருத்யானலம் ஶலப⁴யன் முனிமன்வதா⁴வீத் ॥6॥
Meaning
க்ருத்யாம் ச தாம்-அஸி-த⁴ராம் - and that Krityaa holding a sword; பு⁴வனம் த³ஹந்தீம்- - scorching the world; அக்³ரே-அபி⁴வீக்ஷ்ய- - seeing in front; ந்ருபதி:-ன பதா³த்-சகம்பே - the king did not move from his place; த்வத்-ப⁴க்த-பா³த⁴ம்- - attacking of Thy devotee; அபி⁴வீக்ஷ்ய ஸுத³ர்ஶனம் தே - seeing, Thy Sudarshana (Discus); க்ருத்யா-அனலம் ஶலப⁴யன் - the fire of Krityaa doused like a moth; முனிம்-அன்வதா⁴வீத் - and chased the sage;
Translation
The king seeing in front the spirit holding a sword and scorching the world, did not budge a bit from his place. Noticing Thy devotee in danger, Thy Discus Sudarshana consumed Krityaa's fire like a moth and then chased the sage who was running away.
ஶ்லோக:
தா⁴வன்னஶேஷபு⁴வனேஷு பி⁴யா ஸ பஶ்யன்
விஶ்வத்ர சக்ரமபி தே க³தவான் விரிஞ்சம் ।
க: காலசக்ரமதிலங்க⁴யதீத்யபாஸ்த:
ஶர்வம் யயௌ ஸ ச ப⁴வந்தமவந்த³தைவ ॥7॥
Meaning
தா⁴வன்-அஶேஷ-பு⁴வனேஷு - running in all the worlds; பி⁴யா ஸ பஶ்யன் விஶ்வத்ர - fearfully he seeing everywhere; சக்ரம்-அபி தே - Thy discus alone; க³தவான் விரிஞ்சம் - went to Brahmaa; க:-கால-சக்ரம்-அதிலங்க⁴யதி- - who can overcome the wheel of time'; இதி-அபாஸ்த: - thus (saying) was dismissed; ஶர்வம் யயௌ ஸ ச - he (Durvaasaa) also went to Shiva; ப⁴வந்தம் அவந்த³த ஏவ - he (who) made obeisance to Thee alone;
Translation
Running around the limitless worlds fearfully, Durvaasaa saw Thy discus alone everywhere. He went to Brahmaa for respite, who dismissed him saying that who could overcome the wheel of time. He then went to Shiva, he who also made obeisance to Thee alone.
ஶ்லோக:
பூ⁴யோ ப⁴வன்னிலயமேத்ய முனிம் நமந்தம்
ப்ரோசே ப⁴வானஹம்ருஷே நனு ப⁴க்ததா³ஸ: ।
ஜ்ஞானம் தபஶ்ச வினயான்விதமேவ மான்யம்
யாஹ்யம்ப³ரீஷபத³மேவ பஜ⁴ேதி பூ⁴மன் ॥8॥
Meaning
பூ⁴ய: ப⁴வத்-னிலயம்-ஏத்ய - then reaching Thy abode; முனிம் நமந்தம் ப்ரோசே - to the sage who was prostrating, said; ப⁴வான-அஹம்-ருஷே - Thou 'I am, O Rishi,; நனு ப⁴க்த-தா³ஸ: - only a servant of my devotees; ஜ்ஞானம் தப:-ச - knowledge and austerity; வினய-ஆன்விதம்-ஏவ மான்யம் - combined with modesty only is respected; யாஹி - go; அம்ப³ரீஷ-பத³ம்-ஏவ பஜ⁴- - seek shelter at the feet of Ambareesh himself'; இதி பூ⁴மன் - thus, O Infinite Lord! (Thou said to him);
Translation
Then, when the sage Durvaasaa reached Thy abode and was prostrating before Thee, O Infinite Lord! Thou told him,'O Rishi, I am only a servant of my devotees. Knowledge and austerity combined with modesty and humility only is respected. Go and seek shelter at the feet of Ambareesh himself.
ஶ்லோக:
தாவத்ஸமேத்ய முனினா ஸ க்³ருஹீதபாதோ³
ராஜாபஸ்ருத்ய ப⁴வத³ஸ்த்ரமஸாவனௌஷீத் ।
சக்ரே க³தே முனிரதா³த³கி²லாஶிஷோஸ்மை
த்வத்³ப⁴க்திமாக³ஸி க்ருதேபி க்ருபாம் ச ஶம்ஸன் ॥9॥
Meaning
தாவத்-ஸமேத்ய - then coming back; முனினா ஸ க்³ருஹீத-பாத:³ - by the sage, whose feet were clasped; ராஜா-அபஸ்ருத்ய - the king (Ambareesh) moved away; ப⁴வத்-அஸ்த்ரம்-அஸௌ-அனௌஷீத் - he then praised Thy weapon Sudarshan; சக்ரே க³தே - when the discus went away; முனி:-அதா³த்- - the sage gave; அகி²ல-ஆஶிஷ:-அஸ்மை - all the blessings to him; த்வத்-ப⁴க்திம்- - and devotion to Thee; அகா³ஸி க்ருதே-அபி - even though wronged; க்ருபாம் ச ஶம்ஸன் - also praised (the king's) kindness,;
Translation
Coming back to Ambareesh, the sage clasped his feet for pardon. The king moved back and withdrew his feet out of humility and praised Thy weapon the discus Sudarshana.On the discus retiring, the sage was all praises for Ambareesh for his devotion and the kindness shown in spite of being wronged. He gave the king all the blessings.

ராஜா ப்ரதீக்ஷ்ய முனிமேகஸமாமனாஶ்வான்
ஸம்போ⁴ஜ்ய ஸாது⁴ தம்ருஷிம் விஸ்ருஜன் ப்ரஸன்னம் ।
பு⁴க்த்வா ஸ்வயம் த்வயி ததோபி த்³ருட⁴ம் ரதோபூ⁴-
த்ஸாயுஜ்யமாப ச ஸ மாம் பவனேஶ பாயா: ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ராஜா ப்ரதீக்ஷ்ய முனிம்- - the king awaiting the sage; ஏகஸமாம்-அனாஶ்வான் - for one year did not take food; ஸம்போ⁴ஜ்ய ஸாது⁴ - feeding well; தம்-ருஷிம் - that sage; விஸ்ருஜன் ப்ரஸன்னம் - and sending him off pleased; பு⁴க்த்வா ஸ்வயம் - taking food himself; த்வயி தத:-அபி - to Thee even more; த்³ருட⁴ம் ரத:-அபூ⁴த்- - firmly devoted became; ஸாயுஜ்யம்-ஆப ச ஸ - and he attained union with Thee; மாம் பவனேஶ பாயா: - me, O Lord of Guruvaayur! Protect;
Translation
The king waited for the sage to return and did not take food for one year.Then he fed him well and sent him off happy, after which only he took food himself.The king became more firmly devoted to Thee than before and ultimately attained union with Thee. O Lord of Guruvaayur! May Thou protect me.
