ப⁴வந்தமயமுத்³வஹன் யது³குலோத்³வஹோ நிஸ்ஸரன்
த³த³ர்ஶ க³க³னோச்சலஜ்ஜலப⁴ராம் கலிந்தா³த்மஜாம் ।
அஹோ ஸலிலஸஞ்சய: ஸ புனரைந்த்³ரஜாலோதி³தோ
ஜலௌக⁴ இவ தத்க்ஷணாத் ப்ரபத³மேயதாமாயயௌ ॥1॥
Meaning
ப⁴வந்தம்-அயம்-உத்³வஹன் - Thee he carrying; யது³குல-உத்³வஹ: - this leader of the Yadu clan; நிஸ்ஸரன் த³த³ர்ஶ - and setting out saw; க³க³ன-உச்சலத்-ஜல-ப⁴ராம் - reaching to the skies the water overflowing; கலிந்த-³ஆத்மஜாம் - Kalinda's daughter, Yamuna; அஹோ ஸலில-ஸஞ்சய: ஸ: - Lo! water collection that; புன:-ஐந்த்³ரஜால-உதி³த: - as though caused by Indrajaala, magic; ஜலௌக:⁴- இவ - a flood like; தத்-க்ஷணாத் - in that very moment; ப்ரபத-³மேயதாம்-ஆயயௌ - to the ankles measuring became;
Translation
When the leader of the Yadu clan Vasudeva set out carrying Thee, he saw the waters of the Yamuna river flooded to the skies. Lo! As he crossed, the waters were reduced to the ankles of his feet as if the huge expanse of water was an illusory flood caused by magic.

ப்ரஸுப்தபஶுபாலிகாம் நிப்⁴ருதமாருத³த்³பா³லிகா-
மபாவ்ருதகவாடிகாம் பஶுபவாடிகாமாவிஶன் ।
ப⁴வந்தமயமர்பயன் ப்ரஸவதல்பகே தத்பதா³-
த்³வஹன் கபடகன்யகாம் ஸ்வபுரமாக³தோ வேக³த: ॥2॥
Meaning
ப்ரஸுப்த-பஶுபாலிகாம் - fast asleep, (in which) the cowherd women were; நிப்⁴ருதம்-ஆருத³த்³-பா³லிகாம்- - gently (where) was crying a girl child; அபாவ்ருத-கவாடிகாம் - open were whose doors; பஶுப-வாடிகாம்-ஆவிஶன் - (that) cowherd's house entering; ப⁴வந்தம்-அயம்-அர்பயன் - Thee, he (that Vasudeva) placing; ப்ரஸவ-தல்பகே - on the labour cot; தத்-பதா³த்-வஹன் - (and) from that place taking; கபட-கன்யகாம் - the seeming female infant; ஸ்வபுரம்-ஆக³த: வேக³த: - came back to his city quickly;
Translation
Vasudeva entered the cowherd chieftain's house, whose doors were open and the cowherd women were all fast asleep, and a baby girl was crying. He gently placed Thee on the labour cot and took the seeming female infant (Yoga Maayaa) in his hands and quickly proceeded to his house, in Mathura.

ததஸ்த்வத³னுஜாரவக்ஷபிதனித்³ரவேக³த்³ரவத்³-
ப⁴டோத்கரனிவேதி³தப்ரஸவவார்தயைவார்திமான் ।
விமுக்தசிகுரோத்கரஸ்த்வரிதமாபதன் போ⁴ஜரா-
ட³துஷ்ட இவ த்³ருஷ்டவான் ப⁴கி³னிகாகரே கன்யகாம் ॥3॥
Meaning
தத:-த்வத்-அனுஜா-ரவ- - then by Thy younger sister's the sound (of crying); க்ஷபித-னித்³ர-வேக-³த்³ரவத்- - awakened and running fast; ப⁴ட-உத்கர-னிவேதி³த- - the host of attendants informed; ப்ரஸவ-வார்தயா- - (about) the delivery news; ஏவ-ஆர்திமான் - (by which) only agitated; விமுக்த-சிகுர-உத்கர:- - (and with) dishevelled locks of hair; த்வரிதம்-ஆபதன் - hastily reaching; போ⁴ஜ-ராஜ-அதுஷ்ட - Bhojaraaja (Kansa) dissatisfied; இவ த்³ருஷ்டவான் - as if saw; ப⁴கி³னிகா-கரே கன்யகாம் - in his sister's hands the baby girl;
Translation
Then awakened by the sound of crying of Thy younger sister, the host of attendants ran fast to inform Kansa of the child's birth. Stricken with fear, Kansa, with dishevelled hair, hastily reached the spot and was surprised and confused to see a baby girl in his sister's arms.
ஶ்லோக:
த்⁴ருவம் கபடஶாலினோ மது⁴ஹரஸ்ய மாயா ப⁴வே-
த³ஸாவிதி கிஶோரிகாம் ப⁴கி³னிகாகராலிங்கி³தாம் ।
த்³விபோ நலினிகாந்தராதி³வ ம்ருணாலிகாமாக்ஷிப-
ந்னயம் த்வத³னுஜாமஜாமுபலபட்டகே பிஷ்டவான் ॥4॥
Meaning
த்⁴ருவம் கபடஶாலின: - certainly of the deceitful; மது⁴ஹரஸ்ய மாயா ப⁴வேத்- - Vishnu's trick this must be; அஸௌ-இதி கிஶோரிகாம் - this (girl) thus (deciding), the girl; ப⁴கி³னிகா-கர-ஆலிங்கி³தாம் - in his sister in her arms held close; த்³விப: நலினி-காந்தராத்-இவ - (like) an elephant from the lotus pond; ம்ருணாலிகாம்-ஆக்ஷிபன்- - a tender lotus stalk plucking out; அயம் த்வத்-அனுஜாம்-அஜாம்- - this (Kansa), Thy younger sister , the birth less one; உபல-பட்டகே பிஷ்டவான் - on a block of stone dashed;
Translation
Kansa decided that certainly this was a trick of the deceitful Vishnu that this girl was born. He pulled the infant away from his sister who had held her close in her arms, just as an elephant would pluck out a tender lotus stalk from a pond of lotus, and dashed her, Thy younger sister, the birth less one, on a block of stone.

தத: ப⁴வது³பாஸகோ ஜ²டிதி ம்ருத்யுபாஶாதி³வ
ப்ரமுச்ய தரஸைவ ஸா ஸமதி⁴ரூட⁴ரூபாந்தரா ।
அத⁴ஸ்தலமஜக்³முஷீ விகஸத³ஷ்டபா³ஹுஸ்பு²ர-
ந்மஹாயுத⁴மஹோ க³தா கில விஹாயஸா தி³த்³யுதே ॥5॥
Meaning
தத: ப⁴வத்-உபாஸக: - then (as) Thy devotee; ஜ²டிதி ம்ருத்யுபாஶாத்-இவ - quickly from the clutches of death, like that; ப்ரமுச்ய தரஸா-ஏவ - slipping out (of Kansa's clutches) immediately; ஸா ஸமதி⁴ரூட-⁴ரூபாந்தரா - she (Yoga Maayaa) assumed another form; அத:⁴-தலம்-அஜக்³முஷீ - below the earth not going (rising above the earth); விகஸத்-அஷ்ட-பா³ஹு:- - (the form in which) she developed eight arms; ஸ்பு²ரன்-மஹா-ஆயுத⁴ம்- - shining with divine weapons; அஹோ க³தா கில - what a wonder went away indeed; விஹாயஸா தி³த்³யுதே - in the sky shining;
Translation
Then, just as Thy devotee would quickly free himself from the clutches of death, she, Yoga Maayaa freed herself from the clutches of Kamsa immediately. Not hitting the earth, she rose above the earth in the sky and assumed another form with eight arms shining with divine weapons.
ஶ்லோக:
ந்ருஶம்ஸதர கம்ஸ தே கிமு மயா வினிஷ்பிஷ்டயா
ப³பூ⁴வ ப⁴வத³ந்தக: க்வசன சிந்த்யதாம் தே ஹிதம் ।
இதி த்வத³னுஜா விபோ⁴ க²லமுதீ³ர்ய தம் ஜக்³முஷீ
மருத்³க³ணபணாயிதா பு⁴வி ச மந்தி³ராண்யேயுஷீ ॥6॥
Meaning
ந்ருஶம்ஸதர கம்ஸ - O cruel Kansa!; தே கிமு - what is your (gain); மயா வினிஷ்பிஷ்டயா - by my killing; ப³பூ⁴வ ப⁴வத்-அந்தக: - has been (born) your destroyer; க்வசன - elsewhere; சிந்த்யதாம் தே ஹிதம் - think of your welfare; இதி த்வத்-அனுஜா - thus Thy sister; விபோ⁴ க²லம்-உதீ³ர்ய தம் - O Lord! to the wicked one saying; ஜக்³முஷீ மருத்³க³ண-பணாயிதா - went away (disappeared), being praised by the Devas; பு⁴வி ச மந்தி³ராணி-ஏயுஷீ - and on the earth, in the temples, entered;
Translation
"O cruel most Kansa! What is your gain by smashing me? Your destroyer has been born elsewhere. Think of your welfare." Thus saying to the wicked one, Thy sister disappeared. The Devas praised her also as she entered the temples on the earth and was worshipped.

ப்ரகே³ புனரகா³த்மஜாவசனமீரிதா பூ⁴பு⁴ஜா
ப்ரலம்ப³ப³கபூதனாப்ரமுக²தா³னவா மானின: ।
ப⁴வன்னித⁴னகாம்யயா ஜக³தி ப³ப்⁴ரமுர்னிர்ப⁴யா:
குமாரகவிமாரகா: கிமிவ து³ஷ்கரம் நிஷ்க்ருபை: ॥7॥
Meaning
ப்ரகே³ புன:- - the next morning, again; அகா³த்மஜா- - by the daughter of the mountain (Paarvati-Yoga Maayaa); வசனம்-ஈரிதா - the words spoken (which were); பூ⁴பு⁴ஜா - by the king (being told to); ப்ரலம்ப-³ப³க-பூதனா- - Pralamba, Baka, Pootanaa,; ப்ரமுக-²தா³னவா: - the main demons; மானின: - haughty; ப⁴வத்-னித⁴ன-காம்யயா - with the desire to kill Thee; ஜக³தி ப³ப்⁴ரமு:-னிர்ப⁴யா: - all over the land, roamed about fearlessly; குமாரக-விமாரகா: - killing children; கிமிவ து³ஷ்கரம் நிஷ்க்ருபை: - what is not possible by the merciless people;
Translation
Thereafter, the next morning, the king told the main haughty demons, Pralamba, Baka and Pootana, what the daughter of the mountain, Paarvati-Yoga Maayaa had said. They then roamed all over the land fearlessly killing the children. Merciless people are capable of doing merciless deeds.

தத: பஶுபமந்தி³ரே த்வயி முகுந்த³ நந்த³ப்ரியா-
ப்ரஸூதிஶயனேஶயே ருத³தி கிஞ்சித³ஞ்சத்பதே³ ।

Meaning
தத: பஶுப-மந்தி³ரே - then in the cowherd's (Nanda's) house; த்வயி முகுந்த³ - (when) Thou were O Lord! (Bestower of Liberation); நந்த³ ப்ரியா-ப்ரஸூதி-ஶயனே- - on wife of Nanda (Yashoda's) labour-bed; ஶயே ருத³தி - lying and crying; கிஞ்சித்-அஞ்சத்-பதே³ - and slightly kicking the legs; விபு³த்⁴ய வனிதா-ஜனை:- - waking up, by the women folk; தனய-ஸம்ப⁴வே கோ⁴ஷிதே - the birth of a boy was announced; முதா³ கிமு வதா³மி-அஹோ - overjoyed, O What can I say; ஸகலம்-ஆகுலம் கோ³குலம் - all brimming (with joy), Gokula was;
Translation
Then, Bestower of Liberation! O Lord! Lying on the labour bed of Yashoda, the cowherd chieftain's wife, Thou raised infant cries as Thou slightly kicked Thy legs. All the women folk were aroused from sleep, and they announced the birth of a boy. O! How can I describe the joy with which the whole of Gokula was brimming.

அஹோ க²லு யஶோத³யா நவகலாயசேதோஹரம்
ப⁴வந்தமலமந்திகே ப்ரத²மமாபிப³ந்த்யா த்³ருஶா ।
புன: ஸ்தனப⁴ரம் நிஜம் ஸபதி³ பாயயந்த்யா முதா³
மனோஹரதனுஸ்ப்ருஶா ஜக³தி புண்யவந்தோ ஜிதா: ॥9॥
Meaning
அஹோ க²லு யஶோத³யா - what a wonder indeed, by Yashoda; நவ-கலாய-சேதோஹரம் - like a fresh Kalaya flower enchanting the mind; ப⁴வந்தம்-அலம்-அந்திகே - Thee, very near to herself; ப்ரத²மம்-ஆபிப³ந்த்யா - at first drinking thoroughly; த்³ருஶா புன: - with the eyes, then; ஸ்தனப⁴ரம் நிஜம் ஸபதி³ - her own breasts immediately; பாயயந்த்யா முதா³ - feeding joyfully; மனோஹர-தனு-ஸ்ப்ருஶா - (Thy) charming body caressing; ஜக³தி புண்யவந்த: - in the world, the most meritorious ones; ஜிதா: - were surpassed;
Translation
What a wonder indeed that the most meritorious and holy persons were surpassed by Yashoda by her good fortune as she imbibed with her eyes Thy beautiful form fresh as a Kalaya flower lying by her side. Then she joyfully applied Thee to her breasts feeding Thee, as she also caressed Thy charming body again and again.

ப⁴வத்குஶலகாம்யயா ஸ க²லு நந்த³கோ³பஸ்ததா³
ப்ரமோத³ப⁴ரஸங்குலோ த்³விஜகுலாய கின்னாத³தா³த் ।

Meaning
ப⁴வத்-குஶல-காம்யயா - Thy wellbeing desiring; ஸ க²லு நந்த³கோ³ப:-ததா³ - that, Nanadagopa indeed, then; ப்ரமோத-³ப⁴ர-ஸங்குல: - with extreme joy overwhelmed; த்³விஜ-குலாய - to the Braahmin clan (holy men); கிம்-ன-அத³தா³த் - what did not give; ததா²-ஏவ பஶு-பாலகா: - in the same way the cowherds; கிமு ந மங்க³லம் தேனிரே - what auspicious act did not perform; ஜக³த்-த்ரிதய-மங்க³ல த்வம்- - O Lord! The beneficiary of the world! Thou; இஹ பாஹி மாம்-ஆமயாத் - here save me from ailments;
Translation
Nandagopa, overwhelmed with joy,and out of the desire for Thy wellbeing gave away limitless gifts to holy men of the Braahmin clan. In the same manner innumerable auspicious rites and observances were performed by the gopas for Thy sake. Thou the harbinger of auspiciousness of the three worlds, deign to save me from my ailments.
