இந்த்³ரத்³யும்ன: பாண்ட்³யக²ண்டா³தி⁴ராஜ-
ஸ்த்வத்³ப⁴க்தாத்மா சந்த³னாத்³ரௌ கதா³சித் ।
த்வத் ஸேவாயாம் மக்³னதீ⁴ராலுலோகே
நைவாக³ஸ்த்யம் ப்ராப்தமாதித்²யகாமம் ॥1॥
Meaning
இந்த்³ரத்³யும்ன: - Indradyumna; பாண்ட்³ய-க²ண்ட-³அதி⁴ராஜ:- - of Paandya land, the king; த்வத்-ப⁴க்த-ஆத்மா - Thy great devotee; சந்த³ன-ஆத்³ரௌ - on the Malayaa mountain; கதா³சித் - once upon a time; த்வத் ஸேவாயாம் மக்³ன-தீ⁴: - in Thy worship, entirely absorbed; ஆலுலோகே ந-ஏவ- - did not even notice; அக³ஸ்த்யம் ப்ராப்தம்- - sage Agastya approaching; ஆதித்²யகாமம் - (who was) expecting hospitality;
Translation
Indradyumna, Thy great devotee and the king of Paandya land was once engrossed in worshipping Thee on the Malaya mountain. He was so absorbed that he did not even notice sage Agastya who approached expecting his hospitality.
ஶ்லோக:
கும்போ⁴த்³பூ⁴தி: ஸம்ப்⁴ருதக்ரோத⁴பா⁴ர:
ஸ்தப்³தா⁴த்மா த்வம் ஹஸ்திபூ⁴யம் பஜ⁴ேதி ।
ஶப்த்வாதை²னம் ப்ரத்யகா³த் ஸோபி லேபே⁴
ஹஸ்தீந்த்³ரத்வம் த்வத்ஸ்ம்ருதிவ்யக்தித⁴ன்யம் ॥2॥
Meaning
கும்போ⁴த்³பூ⁴தி: - Agastya; ஸம்ப்⁴ருத-க்ரோத-⁴பா⁴ர: - (who was) overcome with anger (said); ஸ்தப்³த-⁴ஆத்மா த்வம் - you of such haughty nature; ஹஸ்திபூ⁴யம் பஜ⁴-இதி - be born as a elephant, thus; ஶப்த்வா-அத-²ஏனம் - then cursing him; ப்ரத்யகா³த் - departed; ஸ:-அபி லேபே⁴ - he also got; ஹஸ்தி-இந்த்³ரத்வம் - the form of a lordly elephant; த்வத்-ஸ்ம்ருதி-வ்யக்தி-த⁴ன்யம் - with the good fortune of retaining a clear memory of Thee;
Translation
Agastya who was overcome with anger cursed the king that as he was of such haughty nature he would be born as an elephant and departed. Indradyumna got the form of a lordly elephant with the good fortune of retaining a clear memory of Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
த³க்³தா⁴ம்போ⁴தே⁴ர்மத்⁴யபா⁴ஜி த்ரிகூடே
க்ரீட³ஞ்சை²லே யூத²போயம் வஶாபி⁴: ।
ஸர்வான் ஜந்தூனத்யவர்திஷ்ட ஶக்த்யா
த்வத்³ப⁴க்தானாம் குத்ர நோத்கர்ஷலாப:⁴ ॥3॥
Meaning
து³க்³த-⁴அம்போ⁴தே⁴:-மத்⁴ய-பா⁴ஜி - of the milk ocean's middle part; த்ரிகூடே க்ரீட³ன்-ஶைலே - on the Trikoota mountain sporting; யூத²ப:-அயம் வஶாபி⁴: - this leader of the elephants, with females (elephants); ஸர்வான் ஜந்தூன்-அத்யவர்திஷ்ட - all creatures excelling; ஶக்த்யா - in strength; த்வத்-ப⁴க்தானாம் - Thy devotees; குத்ர ந- - where not; உத்கர்ஷ-லாப:⁴ - (do they) inherit greatness?;
Translation
On the Trikoota mountain, which is in the centre of the milk ocean, this leader of the elephants sported with female elephants excelling all other creatures in strength. Where don’t Thy devotees attain superiority?
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ்வேன ஸ்தே²ம்னா தி³வ்யதே³ஶத்வஶக்த்யா
ஸோயம் கே²தா³னப்ரஜானந் கதா³சித் ।
ஶைலப்ராந்தே க⁴ர்மதாந்த: ஸரஸ்யாம்
யூதை²ஸ்ஸார்த⁴ம் த்வத்ப்ரணுன்னோபி⁴ரேமே ॥4॥
Meaning
ஸ்வேன ஸ்தே²ம்னா - of his own strength; தி³வ்ய-தே³ஶத்வ-ஶக்த்யா - (and) by the power of that divine region; ஸ:-அயம் - he this (elephant king); கே²தா³ன்-அப்ரஜானந் - any difficulties of life not knowing; கதா³சித் - one day; ஶைல-ப்ராந்தே - in the slopes of the hills (roaming about); க⁴ர்ம-தாந்த: - overwhelmed by sun's heat; ஸரஸ்யாம் யூதை²:-ஸார்த⁴ம் - in a lake with his herds; த்வத்-ப்ரணுன்ன:- - prompted by Thee; அபி⁴ரேமே - sported;
Translation
Owing to his strength and by the power of the divine region, where he lived, the elephant king did not face any hardships of life. One day, roaming on the mountainous region, unable to bear the heat of the sun, he sought relief in a lake and sported therein with his herds, indeed prompted by Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ஹூஹூஸ்தாவத்³தே³வலஸ்யாபி ஶாபாத்
க்³ராஹீபூ⁴தஸ்தஜ்ஜலே ப³ர்தமான: ।
ஜக்³ராஹைனம் ஹஸ்தினம் பாத³தே³ஶே
ஶாந்த்யர்த²ம் ஹி ஶ்ராந்திதோ³ஸி ஸ்வகானாம் ॥5॥
Meaning
ஹூஹூ:-தாவத்- - then Huhu (the Gandarva); தே³வலஸ்ய-அபி ஶாபாத் - by sage Devala's curse, also; க்³ராஹீபூ⁴த:- - a crocodile having become; தத்-ஜலே வர்தமான: - in the waters of the same ( lake) living; ஜக்³ராஹ-ஏனம் ஹஸ்தினம் - (he) caught this elephant; பாத்³-தே³ஶே - by the leg; ஶாந்தி-அர்த²ம் ஹி - for the welfare indeed; ஶ்ராந்தித:³-அஸி - sufferings giver are Thou; ஸ்வகானாம் - to Thy devotees;
Translation
At that time, in the waters of that lake, there lived a Gandarva named Huhu, who had become a crocodile because of the curse of sage Devala. He caught the elephant king by the leg. Indeed Thou do give sufferings to Thy devotees for their ultimate welfare.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வத்ஸேவாயா வைப⁴வாத் து³ர்னிரோத⁴ம்
யுத்⁴யந்தம் தம் வத்ஸராணாம் ஸஹஸ்ரம் ।
ப்ராப்தே காலே த்வத்பதை³காக்³ர்யஸித்⁴யை
நக்ராக்ராந்தம் ஹஸ்திவர்யம் வ்யதா⁴ஸ்த்வம் ॥6॥
Meaning
த்வத்-ஸேவாயா: வைப⁴வாத் - by Thy worship's glory; து³ர்னிரோத⁴ம் யுத்⁴யந்தம் தம் - continuously fighting him (who was); வத்ஸராணாம் ஸஹஸ்ரம் - for a thousand years; ப்ராப்தே காலே - when the time had come (for his redemption); த்வத்-பத-³ஏகாக்³ர்ய-ஸித்⁴யை - to Thy feet for attaining one-pointed devotion; நக்ர-ஆக்ராந்தம் ஹஸ்திவர்யம் - who was attacked by the crocodile, that elephant king; வ்யதா⁴:-த்வம் - made it happen (thus) Thou;
Translation
Supported by the power derived from the glory of Thy worship, the elephant king was invincible and went on fighting for a thousand years. When the time for his redemption had come, and he was fit for one-pointed devotion to Thee, Thou subjected him to this situation.

ஆர்திவ்யக்தப்ராக்தனஜ்ஞானப⁴க்தி:
ஶுண்டோ³த்க்ஷிப்தை: புண்ட³ரீகை: ஸமர்சன் ।
பூர்வாப்⁴யஸ்தம் நிர்விஶேஷாத்மனிஷ்ட²ம்
ஸ்தோத்ரம் ஶ்ரேஷ்ட²ம் ஸோன்வகா³தீ³த் பராத்மன் ॥7॥
Meaning
ஆர்தி-வ்யக்த- - under the stress of suffering, unfolded; ப்ராக்தன-ஜ்ஞான-ப⁴க்தி: - the knowledge and devotion which he attained in previous life; ஶுண்ட-³உத்க்ஷிப்தை: - plucked with his trunk; புண்ட³ரீகை: ஸமர்சன் - with white lotus flowers he worshipped Thee; பூர்வ-அப்⁴யஸ்தம் - and learnt before (in the past life); நிர்விஶேஷ-ஆத்ம-னிஷ்ட²ம் - pertaining to the attributeless Aatman; ஸ்தோத்ரம் ஶ்ரேஷ்ட²ம் - a great hymn; ஸ:-அன்வகா³தீ³த் - he sang and sang; பராத்மன் - O Supreme being!;
Translation
Under the stress of suffering, his inherent devotion and pure knowledge unfolded and he began to offer Thee worship with white lotus flowers plucked with his trunk. Relating to the attributeless Brahman, he sang continuously a great hymn which he had learnt in the past life.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶ்ருத்வா ஸ்தோத்ரம் நிர்கு³ணஸ்த²ம் ஸமஸ்தம்
ப்³ரஹ்மேஶாத்³யைர்னாஹமித்யப்ரயாதே ।
ஸர்வாத்மா த்வம் பூ⁴ரிகாருண்யவேகா³த்
தார்க்ஷ்யாரூட:⁴ ப்ரேக்ஷிதோபூ⁴: புரஸ்தாத் ॥8॥
Meaning
ஶ்ருத்வா ஸ்தோத்ரம் - hearing the hymn; நிர்கு³ணஸ்த²ம் ஸமஸ்தம் - to the attributeless Aatman relating fully; ப்³ரஹ்ம-ஈஶ-ஆத்³யை: - by Brahmaa Shiva and others (deciding); ந-அஹம்-இதி-அப்ரயாதே - (this) is not for me, and so not responding; ஸர்வ-ஆத்மா த்வம் - who are the soul of all beings, Thou; பூ⁴ரி-காருண்ய-வேகா³த் - out of infinite compassion; தார்க்ஷ்ய-ஆரூட:⁴ - mounting Garuda; ப்ரேக்ஷித:-அபூ⁴: புரஸ்தாத் - appeared in front of him;
Translation
On hearing the hymn, Brahmaa, Shiva and other gods did not proceed towards the elephant king, as they felt that the hymn was not addressed to them. The Soul of All Beings! Thou moved by boundless flow of mercy, mounted the Garuda and appeared in front of him.

ஹஸ்தீந்த்³ரம் தம் ஹஸ்தபத்³மேன த்⁴ருத்வா
சக்ரேண த்வம் நக்ரவர்யம் வ்யதா³ரீ: ।
க³ந்த⁴ர்வேஸ்மின் முக்தஶாபே ஸ ஹஸ்தீ
த்வத்ஸாரூப்யம் ப்ராப்ய தே³தீ³ப்யதே ஸ்ம ॥9॥
Meaning
ஹஸ்தீ-இந்த்³ரம் தம் - that elephant king; ஹஸ்த-பத்³மேன த்⁴ருத்வா - with Thy lotus hands catching hold of; சக்ரேண த்வம் நக்ரவர்யம் வ்யதா³ரீ: - with the discus,Thou, the great crocodile, tore asunder; க³ந்த⁴ர்வே-அஸ்மின் முக்த-ஶாபே - (when) the Gandarva was released from the curse; ஸ ஹஸ்தீ - that elephant king; த்வத்-ஸாரூப்யம் ப்ராப்ய - a form similar to Thine, attaining; தே³தீ³ப்யதே ஸ்ம - shone brightly;
Translation
Thou with Thy lotus hands caught hold of that elephant king and cut asunder the powerful crocodile with Thy discus. The crocodile was thus released from the curse of sage Devala and got back his Gandharva form. The elephant was, by Thee, then endowed with a brilliant form similar to Thy from.
ஶ்லோக:
ஏதத்³வ்ருத்தம் த்வாம் ச மாம் ச ப்ரகே³ யோ
கா³யேத்ஸோயம் பூ⁴யஸே ஶ்ரேயஸே ஸ்யாத் ।
இத்யுக்த்வைனம் தேன ஸார்த⁴ம் க³தஸ்த்வம்
தி⁴ஷ்ண்யம் விஷ்ணோ பாஹி வாதாலயேஶ ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஏதத்-வ்ருத்தம் - this incident; த்வாம் ச மாம் ச - to you and to me; ப்ரகே³ ய: கா³யேத் - at dawn, he who sings; ஸ:-அயம் பூ⁴யஸே ஶ்ரேயஸே ஸ்யாத் - he will attain the greatest good -i.e., liberation; இதி-உக்த்வா-ஏனம் - saying thus to him; தேன ஸார்த⁴ம் க³த:-த்வம் தி⁴ஷ்ண்யம் - with him Thou went away to Vaikuntha; விஷ்ணோ பாஹி - O Vishnu! Protect me; வாதாலயேஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
"He who praises you and Me with the recital of these incidents will attain liberation". O Vishnu, Thou said thus to him and then along with him departed to Thy abode Vaikuntha. O Lord of Guruvaayur! May Thou be pleased to protect me.
