ப்ரத்³யும்னோ ரௌக்மிணேய: ஸ க²லு தவ கலா ஶம்ப³ரேணாஹ்ருதஸ்தம்
ஹத்வா ரத்யா ஸஹாப்தோ நிஜபுரமஹரத்³ருக்மிகன்யாம் ச த⁴ன்யாம் ।
தத்புத்ரோதா²னிருத்³தோ⁴ கு³ணனிதி⁴ரவஹத்³ரோசனாம் ருக்மிபௌத்ரீம்
தத்ரோத்³வாஹே க³தஸ்த்வம் ந்யவதி⁴ முஸலினா ருக்ம்யபி த்³யூதவைராத் ॥1॥
Meaning
ப்ரத்³யும்ன: ரௌக்மிணேய: - Pradyumna, Rukmini's son; ஸ க²லு தவ கலா - he indeed Thy part incarnation; ஶம்ப³ரேண-ஆஹ்ருத:- - by Shambara was kidnapped; தம் ஹத்வா - him killing; ரத்யா ஸஹ-ஆப்த: - with Rati returned; நிஜபுரம்- - to his own city; அஹரத்-ருக்மி-கன்யாம் - took away Rukmi's daughter; ச த⁴ன்யாம் - and she the fortunate one; தத்-புத்ர:-அத-² - his son then; அனிருத்³த:⁴ கு³ணனிதி⁴:- - Aniruddha, very virtuous; அவஹத்-ரோசனாம் - married Rochanaa; ருக்மி பௌத்ரீம் - Rukmi's grand daughter; தத்ர-உத்³வாஹே க³த:-த்வம் - there, in that wedding Thou went; ந்யவதி⁴ முஸலினா - was killed by Balaraam; ருக்மி-அபி - Rukmi also; த்³யூத-வைராத் - in the game of dice animosity;
Translation
Pradyumna, Rukmini's son was an aspect of Thy essence and was kidnapped by Shambara at birth. Later Pradyumna killed Shambara and returned to his city of Dwaarikaa with his wife Rati. He also carried away the fortunate daughter of Rukmi and married her. His virtuous son Aniruddha married Rochanaa, the grand daughter of Rukmi. Thou had gone to that wedding. During a game of dice, when a quarrel arose, Rukmi was killed by Balaraam.

பா³ணஸ்ய ஸா ப³லிஸுதஸ்ய ஸஹஸ்ரபா³ஹோ-

Meaning
பா³ணஸ்ய ஸா - of Baana, she; ப³லி-ஸுதஸ்ய - of Bali's son (Baan); ஸஹஸ்ர-பா³ஹோ:- - of a thousand arms; மாஹேஶ்வரஸ்ய - devotee of Shiva; மஹிதா து³ஹிதா - the esteemed daughter; கில-உஷா - indeed Ushaa; த்வத்-பௌத்ரம்-ஏனம்- - Thy grandson this; அனிருத்³த⁴ம்-அத்³ருஷ்ட-பூர்வம் - Aniruddha not seen before; ஸ்வப்னே-அனுபூ⁴ய - in the dream meeting; ப⁴க³வன் - O Lord!; விரஹ-ஆதுரா-அபூ⁴த் - separation pangs suffered;
Translation
Bali's son Baana was a devotee of Shiva and had a thousand arms. His esteemed daughter Ushaa had not seen Thy grandson Aniruddha before. She met him in her dreams and suffered pangs of separation from him.

யோகி³ன்யதீவ குஶலா க²லு சித்ரலேகா²
தஸ்யா: ஸகீ² விலிக²தீ தருணானஶேஷான் ।
தத்ரானிருத்³த⁴முஷயா விதி³தம் நிஶாயா-
மானேஷ்ட யோக³ப³லதோ ப⁴வதோ நிகேதாத் ॥3॥
Meaning
யோகி³னீ- - a woman with yogic powers; அதீவ குஶலா - and very skilled; க²லு சித்ரலேகா² - indeed Chitralekhaa; தஸ்யா: ஸகி² - her (Ushaa's) friend; விலிக²தீ - draws (pictures); தருணான்-அஶேஷான் - of young men all; தத்ர-அனிருத்³த⁴ம்- - from there, Aniruddha; உஷயா விதி³தம் - by Ushaa was recognized; நிஶாயாம்-ஆனேஷ்ட - during the night, brought (Chitralekhaa); யோக-³ப³லத: - by yogic powers; ப⁴வத: நிகேதாத் - from Thy palace;
Translation
Ushaa's friend Chitralekhaa had yogic powers and was very skilled in making drawings. She drew portraits of all the young men. Ushaa picked up Aniruddha's portrait whom she recognized. Chitralekhaa with her yogic powers then brought Aniruddha from Thy palace during the night.

கன்யாபுரே த³யிதயா ஸுக²மாரமந்தம்
சைனம் கத²ஞ்சன ப³ப³ந்து⁴ஷி ஶர்வப³ந்தௌ⁴ ।
ஶ்ரீனாரதோ³க்ததது³த³ந்தது³ரந்தரோஷை-
ஸ்த்வம் தஸ்ய ஶோணிதபுரம் யது³பி⁴ர்ன்யருந்தா⁴: ॥4॥
Meaning
கன்யா-புரே - in the virgin's chambers; த³யிதயா - with his beloved (Ushaa); ஸுக²ம்-ஆரமந்தம் - happily sporting; ச-ஏனம் கத²ஞ்சன - and him somehow; ப³ப³ந்து⁴ஷி - tied up; ஶர்வப³ந்தௌ⁴ - Shiva's devotee; ஶ்ரீ-னாரத-³உக்த- - by Shree Naarada told; தத்-உத³ந்த- - that news; து³ரந்த:-ரோஷை:-த்வம் - (in) unbounded anger Thou; தஸ்ய ஶோணிதபுரம் - his (city) Shonitpura; யது³பி⁴:-ன்யருந்தா⁴: - with Yadus besieged;
Translation
In the virgin's chamber, Aniruddha sported happily with his beloved Ushaa. Baana, Shivaa's devotee came to know this and tied him up. This news was given to Thee by Shree Naarad. In a fit of unbounded anger, Thou besieged Baana's city Shonitpura with the help of the Yaadavas.

ஸமம் பூ⁴தவ்ராதைர்யது³ப³லமஶங்கம் நிருருதே⁴ ।

புரீபால:- - the protector of the city; ஶைல-ப்ரிய-து³ஹித்ரு-னாத:²-அஸ்ய - the mountain's dear daughter's consort, his; ப⁴க³வான் - Lord Shiva; ஸமம் பூ⁴தவ்ராதை:- - with the Bhoota army; யது³-ப³லம்-அஶங்கம் - the Yaadava army fearlessly; நிருருதே⁴ - blocked; மஹாப்ராண: பா³ண: - the mighty Baana; ஜ²டிதி - quickly; யுயுதா⁴னேன யுயுதே⁴ - with Yuyudhaana fought; கு³ஹ: ப்ரத்³யும்னேன - Guha with Pradyumna; த்வம்-அபி - Thou too; புரஹந்த்ரா ஜக⁴டிஷே - (with) Tripura destroyer Shiva;
Translation
The consort of the mountain's dear daughter, Shiva, being the protector of the city, with his army of the Bhootas blocked the army of the Yadavas, fearlessly. The mighty Baana quickly gave fight to Yuyudhaana, Guha to Pradyumna and Thou to Shiva, the destroyer of the Puras.

Meaning
நிருத்³த-⁴அஶேஷ-அஸ்த்ரே - resisted were all the weapons; முமுஹுஷி - became unconscious; தவ-அஸ்த்ரேண கி³ரிஶே - by Thy weapon, Shiva; த்³ருதா:-பூ⁴தா:-பீ⁴தா: - fled the Bhootas in fear; ப்ரமத-²குல-வீரா: - of the Pramatha dynasty, the leader; ப்ரமதி²தா: - were crushed; பராஸ்கந்த³த் ஸ்கந்த:³ - was defeated Skanda (guha); குஸும-ஶர-பா³ணை:-ச - by the flower bows's arrows of Pradyumna and; ஸசிவ: ஸ கும்பா⁴ண்ட:³ - the minister of Baana, that Kumbhaanda; பா⁴ண்ட³ம் நவம்-இவ - a pot new as though; ப³லேன-ஆஶு பி³பி⁴தே³ - by Balaram was soon smashed;
Translation
All Shiva's weapons were resisted and he was rendered unconscious by Thy weapon (Mohanaastra). All the army of the Bhootas fled in fear and the leaders of the Pramathas were crushed. Skanda was defeated, by the flower arrows of Pradyumna's bow. The minister of Baana, Kumbhaanda was soon smashed by Balaraam like a new pot.

சாபானாம் பஞ்சஶத்யா ப்ரஸப⁴முபக³தே சி²ன்னசாபேத² பா³ணே
வ்யர்தே² யாதே ஸமேதோ ஜ்வரபதிரஶனைரஜ்வரி த்வஜ்ஜ்வரேண ।
ஜ்ஞானீ ஸ்துத்வாத² த³த்வா தவ சரிதஜுஷாம் விஜ்வரம் ஸ ஜ்வரோகா³த்
ப்ராயோந்தர்ஜ்ஞானவந்தோபி ச ப³ஹுதமஸா ரௌத்³ரசேஷ்டா ஹி ரௌத்³ரா: ॥7॥
Meaning
சாபானாம் பஞ்சஶத்யா - by bows five hundred; ப்ரஸப⁴ம்-உபக³தே - fiercely attacking; சி²ன்ன-சாபே-அத² பா³ணே - breaking of the bows then of Baana; வ்யர்தே² யாத: - fruitlessly returning; ஸமேத: ஜ்வரபதி:- - came the head of all fevers the Shaiva fever; அஶனை:-அஜ்வரி - immediately tormented; த்வத்-ஜ்வரேண - by Thy (the Vaishnava fever); ஜ்ஞானீ ஸ்துத்வா-அத² - the enlightened (Shaiva fever) praising then; த³த்வா தவ சரிதஜுஷாம் - giving to the (devotees) admirers of Thy excellences; விஜ்வரம் ஸ ஜ்வர:-அகா³த் - freedom, that (Shaiva) fever went away; ப்ராய:-அந்த:-ஜ்ஞான்வந்த:-அபி - often inner knowledge having even; ச ப³ஹு-தமஸா - and by much of Tamas; ரௌத்³ர-சேஷ்டா ஹி ரௌத்³ரா: - ferociously act indeed the Rudras;
Translation
Baana came attacking ferociously with 500 bows and arrows, but his weapons being severed he had to retreat. Thereupon, the head of all the obsession, the Shaiva obsession came to the forefront but was immediately put out by the Vaishnava obsession. The enlightened Shaivas gave freedom to all those that sung Thy excellences and went away praising Thee. Often the enlightened Rudras also act ferociously, being predominated by Tamas.

முக்த்வா தத்³த³த்தமானோ நிஜபுரமக³ம: ஸானிருத்³த:⁴ ஸஹோஷ: ॥8॥
Meaning
பா³ணம் நானா-ஆயுத-⁴உக்³ரம் - Baana with various weapons more ferocious; புன:-அபி⁴பதிதம் - again having attacked; த³ர்ப-தோ³ஷாத்-விதன்வன் - due to the vice of arrogance, made him; நிர்லூன-அஶேஷ-தோ³ஷம் - by cutting off all his vices (arms); ஸபதி³ பு³பு³து⁴ஷா - soon (a) realized (person); ஶங்கரேண-உபகீ³த: - by Shankara and praised (Thee); தத்-வாசா - by his request; ஶிஷ்ட-பா³ஹு-த்³விதயம்-உப⁴யத: - left with arms two on both sides; நிர்ப⁴யம் தத்-ப்ரியம் தம் - unafraid his devotee him; முக்த்வா - letting off; தத்-த³த்த-மான: - by him giving honour; நிஜ-புரம்-அக³ம: - to Thy own city returned; ஸானிருத்³த⁴ ஸஹோஷ: - with Aniruddha (and) with Ushaa;
Translation
Baana again attacked ferociously full of arrogance with his many various weapons. Thou made him devoid of all vice and his many arms by cutting them off. Shankara soon realised Thy greatness and praised Thee and on his request Thou let off Baana with his two arms on both sides. Baana who was then spared from the fear of death honoured Thee. Thou then returned to Thy city Dwaarikaa with Aniruddha and Ushaa.

முஹுஸ்தாவச்ச²க்ரம் வருணமஜயோ நந்த³ஹரணே
யமம் பா³லானீதௌ த³வத³ஹனபானேனிலஸக²ம் ।
விதி⁴ம் வத்ஸஸ்தேயே கி³ரிஶமிஹ பா³ணஸ்ய ஸமரே
விபோ⁴ விஶ்வோத்கர்ஷீ தத³யமவதாரோ ஜயதி தே ॥9॥
Meaning
முஹு:-தாவத்-ஶக்ரம் - again and again then Indra; வருணம்-அஜய: - Varuna defeated; நந்த-³ஹரணே - when he had kidnapped Nanda Gopa; யமம் பா³ல-ஆனீதௌ - Yama when he had taken away the (Guru's) children; த³வ-த³ஹன-பானே- - the forest fire by drinking; அனில-ஸக²ம் - wind's friend Agni; விதி⁴ம் வத்ஸ-ஸ்தேயே - Brahmaa when the calves were stolen; கி³ரிஶம்-இஹ் - Shiva here; பா³ணஸ்ய ஸமரே - in Baana's battle; விபோ⁴ - O Lord!; விஶ்வ-உத்கர்ஷீ - all excelling; தத்-அயம்-அவதார: - therefore this incarnation (of Thee) (as Krishna); ஜயதி தே - excels Thine;
Translation
Thou indeed defeated Indra again and again, Varuna was defeated when he kidnapped Nandagopa and Yama was defeated by Thee when he took away the children of Thy Guru. Agni, Vayu's friend was overcome when Thou drank it during the forest fire and Brahmaa was defeated when he stole away the calves. Shiva was defeated here in Baana's battle. Therefore, O Lord! this incarnation of Thee excels and wins over all other of Thy incarnations.

Meaning
த்³விஜ-ருஷா - by a holy Braahmin's anger; க்ருகலாஸ:-வபு:-த⁴ரம் - in a chameleon's body form; ந்ருக-³ன்ருபம் - Nriga king; த்ரிதி³வ-ஆலயம்- - to the god's abode (heaven); ஆபயன் - sending; நிஜ-ஜனே - in Thy people (devotees); த்³விஜ-ப⁴க்திம்-அனுத்தமாம்- - for Braahminas respect supreme; உபதி³ஶன் - instructing; பவனேஶ்வர பாஹி மாம் - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
King Nriga who was reduced to the body of a chameleon by a holy Braahmin's curse, was purified and sent to heaven by Thee. By this Thou instructed Thy devotees to have supreme respect for holy Braahmins. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Save me.
