க்ரமேண ஸர்கே³ பரிவர்த⁴மானே
கதா³பி தி³வ்யா: ஸனகாத³யஸ்தே ।
ப⁴வத்³விலோகாய விகுண்ட²லோகம்
ப்ரபேதி³ரே மாருதமந்தி³ரேஶ ॥1॥
Meaning
க்ரமேண ஸர்கே³ - gradually,as creation; பரிவர்த⁴மானே - was progressing; கதா³பி - once; தி³வ்யா: ஸனகாத³ய: தே - those divine (sages) Sanaka and others; ப⁴வத்-விலோகாய - to see Thee; விகுண்ட²லோகம் ப்ரபேதி³ரே - reached Vaikunthloka; மாருதமந்தி³ரேஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur;
Translation
O Lord of Guruvaayur! as creation progressed, the divine sages Sanaka and the others wanting to pay their respects to Thee went to Vaikuntha loka.
ஶ்லோக:
மனோஜ்ஞனைஶ்ரேயஸகானநாத்³யை-
ரனேகவாபீமணிமந்தி³ரைஶ்ச ।
அனோபமம் தம் ப⁴வதோ நிகேதம்
முனீஶ்வரா: ப்ராபுரதீதகக்ஷ்யா: ॥2॥
Meaning
மனோஜ்ஞ- - the enchanting; நைஶ்ரேயஸ-கானந-ஆத்³யை: - - Naishreyasha Kaanana (the garden by that name) and other; அனேக-வாபீ - with many lakes; மணிமந்தி³ரை: - ச - and gems studded mansions; அனோபமம் தம் - that incomparable; ப⁴வத: நிகேதம் - Thy abode; முனீஶ்வரா: ப்ராபு: - - the sages reached; அதீத-கக்ஷ்யா: - having crossed the (six) ramparts;
Translation
Crossing the six ramparts, the sages reached Thy unmatched abode with the Naishreyasha garden, many lakes and many mansions studded with gems.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴வத்³தி³த்³த்³ருக்ஷூன்ப⁴வனம் விவிக்ஷூன்
த்³வா:ஸ்தௌ² ஜயஸ்தான் விஜயோப்யருந்தா⁴ம் ।
தேஷாம் ச சித்தே பத³மாப கோப:
ஸர்வம் ப⁴வத்ப்ரேரணயைவ பூ⁴மன் ॥3॥
Meaning
ப⁴வத்-தி³த்³த்³ருக்ஷூன்- - desirous of seeing Thee; ப⁴வனம் விவிக்ஷூன் - and about to enter (Thy) abode; த்³வா:ஸ்தௌ² - two gatekeepers; ஜய: - தான் - Jaya, them (the sages); விஜய: -அபி-அருந்தா⁴ம் - also Vijaya, stopped; தேஷாம் ச சித்தே - and in their (sages') minds; பத³ம்-ஆப கோப: - entered anger; ஸர்வம் ப⁴வத்-ப்ரேரணயா-ஏவ - all this by Thy prompting alone; பூ⁴மன் - O Infinite One!;
Translation
The sages were about to enter Thy abode to see Thee, when two gatekeepers, Jaya and Vijaya stopped them. This made the sages angry. All this happened by Thy prompting only.
ஶ்லோக:
வைகுண்ட²லோகானுசிதப்ரசேஷ்டௌ
கஷ்டௌ யுவாம் தை³த்யக³திம் பஜ⁴ேதம் ।
இதி ப்ரஶப்தௌ ப⁴வதா³ஶ்ரயௌ தௌ
ஹரிஸ்ம்ருதிர்னோஸ்த்விதி நேமதுஸ்தான் ॥4॥
Meaning
வைகுண்ட²லோக-அனுசித-ப்ரசேஷ்டௌ - for Vaikunthloka, is not fit, whose conduct; கஷ்டௌ யுவாம் - wicked ones you two; தை³த்ய-க³திம் பஜ⁴ேதம் - state of Asuraas will attain; இதி ப்ரஶப்தௌ - thus cursed; ப⁴வத்-ஆஶ்ரயௌ தௌ - Thy servants they; ஹரி: -ஸ்ம்ருதி: -ன: -அஸ்து- - may we remember Hari (God); இதி நேமது:-தான் - thus beseeching prostrated before them;
Translation
The two gatekeepers were cursed by the sages that as their conduct was not befitting for them to be in Vaikunthloka, they may be embodied as Asuraas. Jaya and Vijaya, Thy servants, beseeched the sages that their devotion to Thee may not falter. So saying, they prostrated to the sages.
ஶ்லோக:
ததே³ததா³ஜ்ஞாய ப⁴வானவாப்த:
ஸஹைவ லக்ஷ்ம்யா ப³ஹிரம்பு³ஜாக்ஷ ।
க²கே³ஶ்வராம்ஸார்பிதசாருபா³ஹு-
ரானந்த³யம்ஸ்தானபி⁴ராமமூர்த்யா ॥5॥
Meaning
தத்-ஏதத்-ஆஜ்ஞாய - that this knowing; ப⁴வான்-அவாப்த: - Thou coming (out); ஸஹ-ஏவ லக்ஷ்ம்யா - along with Laxmi; ப³ஹி: -அம்பு³ஜாக்ஷ - out, O Lotus eyed Lord!; க²கே³ஶ்வர-அம்ஸ- - on Garuda's shoulder; அர்பித-சாரு-பா³ஹு: - - placing Thy charming arm; ஆனந்த³யன்-தான்- - delighting them (the sages); அபி⁴ராம-மூர்த்யா - by Thy beautiful form;
Translation
O Lotus-eyed Lord! Knowing all what had happened, Thou came out along with Laxmi, with Thy charming arm resting on Garuda. The sages were delighted to see Thy beautiful form.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரஸாத்³ய கீ³ர்பி⁴: ஸ்துவதோ முனீந்த்³ரா-
நனந்யனாதா²வத² பார்ஷதௌ³ தௌ ।
ஸம்ரம்ப⁴யோகே³ன ப⁴வைஸ்த்ரிபி⁴ர்மா-
முபேதமித்யாத்தக்ருபம் ந்யகா³தீ³: ॥6॥
Meaning
ப்ரஸாத்³ய கீ³ர்பி⁴: - with pleasing words; ஸ்துவத: முனீந்த்³ரான்- - to the sages as they were praising Thee,; அனந்ய-னாதௌ²- - who did not have any other refuge (other than Thee); அத² பார்ஷதௌ³ தௌ - to those two attendants; ஸம்ரம்ப⁴யோகே³ன ப⁴வை:-த்ரிபி⁴:- - by the path of confrontation, in three lives; மாம்-உபேதம்- - attain me; இதி-ஆத்த-க்ருபம் - thus overcome by compassion; ந்யகா³தீ³: - Thou said;
Translation
As the sages were praising Thee with pleasing words, Thou told the two attendants, who had no refuge but Thee, to confront three lives as Asuras on earth. Overcome by compassion, then Thou granted them Thy attainment.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வதீ³யப்⁴ருத்யாவத² காஶ்யபாத்தௌ
ஸுராரிவீராவுதி³தௌ தி³தௌ த்³வௌ ।
ஸந்த்⁴யாஸமுத்பாத³னகஷ்டசேஷ்டௌ
யமௌ ச லோகஸ்ய யமாவிவான்யௌ ॥7॥
Meaning
த்வதீ³ய-ப்⁴ருத்யௌ- - Thy two attendants; அத² காஶ்யபாத்-தௌ - then from sage Kashyapa, they both; ஸுராரி-வீரௌ- - as the gods' powerful enemies; உதி³தௌ தி³தௌ த்³வௌ - were born of Diti the two; ஸந்த்⁴யா-ஸமுத்பாத³ன- - being begotten at evening; கஷ்ட-சேஷ்டௌ - having cruel nature; யமௌ ச - and the twins (became); லோகஸ்ய யமௌ-இவ-அன்யௌ - for the worlds, like other two Yamas (the death god);
Translation
Thereafter,Thy two attendants took birth as great Asuras through Diti and her husband sage Kashyapa. They being begotten in the evening twilight, the twins became cruel in nature as if they were the gods of death for the world.
ஶ்லோக:
ஹிரண்யபூர்வ: கஶிபு: கிலைக:
பரோ ஹிரண்யாக்ஷ இதி ப்ரதீத: ।
உபௌ⁴ ப⁴வன்னாத²மஶேஷலோகம்
ருஷா ந்யருந்தா⁴ம் நிஜவாஸனாந்தௌ⁴ ॥8॥
Meaning
ஹிரண்ய-பூர்வ: கஶிபு: கில-ஏக: - (the name) Hiranya preceding Kashipu, i.e. Hiranyakashipu was one; பர: ஹிரண்யாக்ஷ இதி ப்ரதீத: - the other Hiranyaaksha thus was known; உபௌ⁴ - both; ப⁴வத்-னாத²ம்-அஶேஷ-லோகம் - the whole world which has Thee as the master; ருஷா - in anger; ந்யருந்தா⁴ம் - (they) tormented; நிஜ-வாஸனா-அந்தௌ⁴ - by their own vaasanaas being blinded;
Translation
One son was known by the name of Hiranyakashipu and the other was known as Hiranyaaksha.They tormented the whole world, which has Thee as the master, in anger and blinded by their inherent evil tendencies.
ஶ்லோக:
தயோர்ஹிரண்யாக்ஷமஹாஸுரேந்த்³ரோ
ரணாய தா⁴வன்னநவாப்தவைரீ ।
ப⁴வத்ப்ரியாம் க்ஷ்மாம் ஸலிலே நிமஜ்ய
சசார க³ர்வாத்³வினத³ன் க³தா³வான் ॥9॥
Meaning
தயோ: - - of them; ஹிரண்யாக்ஷ-மஹாஸுரேந்த்³ர: - Hiranyaaksha the great Asura; ரணாய தா⁴வன்- - a fight seeking; அனவாப்த-வைரீ - not getting any opponent; ப⁴வத்-ப்ரியாம் க்ஷ்மாம் - Thy dear earth; ஸலிலே நிமஜ்ய - immersing in water; சசார க³ர்வாத்-வினத³ன் - roamed about, roaring in arrogance; க³தா³வான் - carrying a mace;
Translation
Of the two of them, Hiranyaaksha, the great Asura, seeking a fight and not getting an opponent, immersed Thy dear earth into the water. He then roamed about roaring arrogantly, carrying a mace.
ஶ்லோக:
ததோ ஜலேஶாத் ஸத்³ருஶம் ப⁴வந்தம்
நிஶம்ய ப³ப்⁴ராம க³வேஷயம்ஸ்த்வாம் ।
ப⁴க்தைகத்³ருஶ்ய: ஸ க்ருபானிதே⁴ த்வம்
நிருந்தி⁴ ரோகா³ன் மருதா³லயேஶ ॥1௦।
Meaning
தத: - then; ஜலேஶாத் - from the Lord of Waters (Varuna); ஸத்³ருஶம் ப⁴வந்தம் - as his equal Thee (are); நிஶம்ய - hearing (thus); ப³ப்⁴ராம - (he) roamed about; க³வேஷயன் த்வாம் - searching for Thee; ப⁴க்தைக-த்³ருஶ்ய: - (O Thou) who can be seen only by Thy devotees; ஸ க்ருபானிதே⁴ த்வம் - That Abode of Compassion,Thou; நிருந்தி⁴ ரோகா³ன் - eradicate my ailments; மருதா³லயேஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Then coming to know from the god of the waters, Varuna, that Thou are the only match for him, Hiranyaaksha roamed about searching for Thee. O Thou, who can be attained only by Thy devotees, Thou the abode of Compassion, kindly eradicate my ailments, O Lord of Guruvaayur!.
