ஹிரண்யாக்ஷம் தாவத்³வரத³ ப⁴வத³ன்வேஷணபரம்
சரந்தம் ஸாம்வர்தே பயஸி நிஜஜங்கா⁴பரிமிதே ।
ப⁴வத்³ப⁴க்தோ க³த்வா கபடபடுதீ⁴ர்னாரத³முனி:
ஶனைரூசே நந்த³ன் த³னுஜமபி நிந்த³ம்ஸ்தவ ப³லம் ॥1॥
Meaning
ஹிரண்யாக்ஷம் தாவத்- - to Hiranyaaksha, then; வரத³ - O Bestower of boons!; ப⁴வத்-அண்வேஷணபரம் - who was searching for Thee (and); சரந்தம் ஸாம்வர்தே பயஸி - who was running around in the waters of deluge; நிஜ-ஜங்கா⁴-பரிமிதே - which was reaching his thighs; ப⁴வத்-ப⁴க்த: க³த்வா - Thy devotee approaching (Hiranyaaksha); கபடபடுதீ⁴:-னாரத³முனி: - Naarada muni who was a diplomatic missionary; ஶனை:-ஊசே - calmly spoke (to Hiranyaaksha); நந்த³ன் த³னுஜம்-அபி - pleasing the Asura; நிந்த³ன்-தவ ப³லம் - and denigrating Thy prowess;
Translation
O Bestower of Boons! Then Thy devotee, the sage Naarada who is skillfully diplomatic in furthering Thy purposes, approached Hiranyaaksha, who was running about searching for Thee, in the cosmic waters which barely reached his knees. Naarada calmly spoke to him, praising him and undermining Thy prowess.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ மாயாவீ விஷ்ணுர்ஹரதி ப⁴வதீ³யாம் வஸுமதீம்
ப்ரபோ⁴ கஷ்டம் கஷ்டம் கிமித³மிதி தேனாபி⁴க³தி³த: ।
நத³ன் க்வாஸௌ க்வாஸவிதி ஸ முனினா த³ர்ஶிதபதோ²
ப⁴வந்தம் ஸம்ப்ராபத்³த⁴ரணித⁴ரமுத்³யந்தமுத³காத் ॥2॥
Meaning
ஸ: மாயாவீ விஷ்ணு:- - "that deceitful Vishnu; ஹரதி ப⁴வதீ³யாம் வஸுமதீம் - is stealing away your own earth; ப்ரபோ⁴ - O Mighty One!; கஷ்டம் கஷ்டம் கிம்-இத³ம்-இதி - what a pity, how is it so", thus; தேன-அபி⁴க³தி³த: - by him (Naarada) was said; நத³ன் க்வ-அஸௌ - roaring "Where is he; க்வ-அஸௌ-இதி - where is he", thus; ஸ முனினா - he (the Asura) by the Muni; த³ர்ஶித-பத:² - was shown the way; ப⁴வந்தம் ஸம்ப்ராபத்- - reached Thee; த⁴ரணி-த⁴ரம்- - (Thee who was) holding up the earth; உத்³யந்தம்-உத³காத் - coming up from the waters;
Translation
When Naarada told the mighty Hiranyaaksh that the deceitful Vishnu was stealing away his own earth and how was it so , Hiranyaaksha with a roar asked where he was, where he was. Thus, following the direction given by the sage, he reached Thee, as Thou were rising up from the waters with the earth.
ஶ்லோக:
அஹோ ஆரண்யோயம் ம்ருக³ இதி ஹஸந்தம் ப³ஹுதரை-
ர்து³ருக்தைர்வித்⁴யந்தம் தி³திஸுதமவஜ்ஞாய ப⁴க³வன் ।
மஹீம் த்³ருஷ்ட்வா த³ம்ஷ்ட்ராஶிரஸி சகிதாம் ஸ்வேன மஹஸா
பயோதா⁴வாதா⁴ய ப்ரஸப⁴முத³யுங்க்தா² ம்ருத⁴விதௌ⁴ ॥3॥
Meaning
அஹோ ஆரண்ய:-அயம் ம்ருக³ - "O this is only a wild animal"; இதி ஹஸந்தம் - thus ridiculing with; ப³ஹுதரை:-து³ருக்தை:-வித்⁴யந்தம் - and many abuses lashing out; தி³திஸுதம்- - the son of Diti (the Asura); அவஜ்ஞாய ப⁴க³வன் - ignoring (Thee) O Lord; மஹீம் த்³ருஷ்ட்வா - seeing the earth; த³ம்ஷ்ட்ராஶிரஸி - at the tip of the tusks; சகிதாம் - (the earth) trembling; ஸ்வேன மஹஸா - by Thy power; பயோதௌ⁴-ஆதா⁴ய - (then) placing (the earth) in the ocean; ப்ரஸப⁴ம்- - at once; உத³யுங்க்தா² - (Thou) did prepare; ம்ருத⁴விதௌ⁴ - for a fight;
Translation
O Lord! Thou ignored the ridiculing words of the Asura that this is only a wild animal and the many abuses hurled by him. Thou saw the earth trembling in fear at the tip of Thy tusk and so placed her firmly on the ocean by Thy power. Then Thou at once were ready for a fight.
ஶ்லோக:
க³தா³பாணௌ தை³த்யே த்வமபி ஹி க்³ருஹீதோன்னதக³தோ³
நியுத்³தே⁴ன க்ரீட³ன் க⁴டக⁴டரவோத்³கு⁴ஷ்டவியதா ।
ரணாலோகௌத்ஸுக்யான்மிலதி ஸுரஸங்கே⁴ த்³ருதமமும்
நிருந்த்⁴யா: ஸந்த்⁴யாத: ப்ரத²மமிதி தா⁴த்ரா ஜக³தி³ஷே ॥4॥
Meaning
க³தா³பாணௌ தை³த்யே - the Asura armed with a mace; த்வம்-அபி ஹி - Thou also indeed; க்³ருஹீத-உன்ந்த-க³த:³ - flourishing a mighty mace; நியுத்³தே⁴ன க்ரீட³ன் - by a dual (fight) as though sporting (the clashing of maces); க⁴ட-க⁴ட-ரவ-உத்³கு⁴ஷ்ட-வியதா - resounding the sky with fierce sound; ரண-ஆலோக-ஔத்ஸுக்யாத்- - with the eagerness to see the fight; மிலதி ஸுரஸங்கே⁴ - when the hosts of gods assembled; த்³ருதம்-அமும் நிருந்த்⁴யா: - quickly kill this (Asura); ஸந்த்⁴யாத: ப்ரத²மம்- - before evening; இதி தா⁴த்ரா ஜக³தி³ஷே - thus Thou were requested by Brahmaa;
Translation
As the Asura was armed with a mace, Thou too flourished a mighty mace and sportingly gave him battle. As the clang of the clashing maces resounded in the sky, the hosts of gods assembled eagerly to see the dual. Brahmaa cried out requesting Thee to kill the Asura before nightfall.
ஶ்லோக:
க³தோ³ன்மர்தே³ தஸ்மிம்ஸ்தவ க²லு க³தா³யாம் தி³திபு⁴வோ
க³தா³கா⁴தாத்³பூ⁴மௌ ஜ²டிதி பதிதாயாமஹஹ! போ⁴: ।
ம்ருது³ஸ்மேராஸ்யஸ்த்வம் த³னுஜகுலனிர்மூலனசணம்
மஹாசக்ரம் ஸ்ம்ருத்வா கரபு⁴வி த³தா⁴னோ ருருசிஷே ॥5॥
Meaning
க³தோ³ன்மர்தே³ தஸ்மின்- - in that fight with the maces; தவ க²லு க³தா³யாம் - (when) Thy mace indeed; தி³திபு⁴வ: - (and) of the Asura's; க³தா³-கா⁴தாத்- - by a blow of the mace; பூ⁴மௌ ஜ²டிதி பதிதாயாம்- - on the ground suddenly fell; அஹஹ போ⁴: - what a wonder O Lord!; ம்ருது³ஸ்மேர-ஆஸ்ய:-த்வம் - with a gentle smile on Thy face, Thou; த³னுஜகுல-னிர்மூலசணம் - famous as the destroyer of the entire Asura race; மஹாசக்ரம் ஸ்ம்ருத்வா - (that) great discus invoking (Sudarshana); கரபு⁴வி த³தா⁴னோ - in the palms of Thy hands holding; ருருசிஷே - looked magnificent;
Translation
During that combat, the Asura's stroke suddenly knocked down Thy mace to the ground. With a smile on Thy face Thou invoked Thy discus (Sudarshana) which is well known for slaying of the race of the Asuras. Thou looked magnificent as the invoked discus placed itself in Thy hands.
ஶ்லோக:
தத: ஶூலம் காலப்ரதிமருஷி தை³த்யே விஸ்ருஜதி
த்வயி சி²ந்த³த்யேனத் கரகலிதசக்ரப்ரஹரணாத் ।
ஸமாருஷ்டோ முஷ்ட்யா ஸ க²லு விதுத³ம்ஸ்த்வாம் ஸமதனோத்
க³லன்மாயே மாயாஸ்த்வயி கில ஜக³ன்மோஹனகரீ: ॥6॥
Meaning
தத: ஶூலம் - then, a trident; காலப்ரதிம்-அருஷி தை³த்யே - angry like Rudra the Destroyer, when the Asura; விஸ்ருஜதி - threw (the trident); த்வயி சி²ந்த³தி- - Thou broke; ஏனத் - this (trident); கர-கலித-சக்ர-ப்ரஹரணாத் - by the blow of the discus held in Thy hand; ஸமாருஷ்ட: - greatly enraged; முஷ்ட்யா ஸ க²லு - with (his) fist he indeed; விதுத³ன்-த்வாம் - hitting Thee; ஸமதனோத் க³லன்மாயே - did employ against Thee, who are beyond, the effects of Maya; மாயா: த்வயி கில - Maaya on Thee indeed; ஜக³த்-மோஹனகரீ: - (Maya) whose tricks can deceive the whole world;
Translation
The Asura who was angry as the Destroyer Rudra, threw his trident at Thee, and Thou broke it with the discus in Thy hands.Greatly enraged he hit Thee with his fist and also employed tricks of Maya against Thee,which may deceive the whole world but does not effect Thee who are above all Maya.

ப⁴வச்சக்ரஜ்யோதிஷ்கணலவனிபாதேன விது⁴தே
ததோ மாயாசக்ரே விததக⁴னரோஷாந்த⁴மனஸம் ।
க³ரிஷ்டா²பி⁴ர்முஷ்டிப்ரஹ்ருதிபி⁴ரபி⁴க்⁴னந்தமஸுரம்

Meaning
ப⁴வத்-சக்ர-ஜ்யோதிஷ்-கண-லவ-னிபாதேன - being hit by a powerful spark of Thy divine discus; விது⁴தே - were destroyed; தத: மாயா-சக்ரே - then (when) the illusion created by the Asura; விதத-க⁴ன-ரோஷ-அந்த-⁴மனஸம் - whose mind was blinded by intense rage; க³ரிஷ்டா²பி⁴:-முஷ்டி-ப்ரஹ்ருதிபி⁴:- - with strong blows of his fist; அபி⁴க்⁴னந்தம்-அஸுரம் - the Asura who was hitting Thee; ஸ்வ-பாத-³அஙுகு³ஷ்டே²ன - with Thy big toe; ஶ்ரவண-பத-³மூலே - at the base of (his) ear; நிரவதீ⁴: - Thou did strike;
Translation
When the illusions created by the Asura were all dispersed being hit by a powerful spark of Thy divine discus, the Asura's mind was overcome by intense rage. He then attacked Thee with strong blows of his heavy fists, whereupon Thou struck him with a powerful blow with Thy big toe at the base of his ear.

மஹாகாய: ஸோயம் தவ சரணபாதப்ரமதி²தோ
க³லத்³ரக்தோ வக்த்ராத³பதத்³ருஷிபி⁴: ஶ்லாகி⁴தஹதி: ।
ததா³ த்வாமுத்³தா³மப்ரமத³ப⁴ரவித்³யோதிஹ்ருத³யா
முனீந்த்³ரா: ஸாந்த்³ராபி⁴: ஸ்துதிபி⁴ரனுவன்னத்⁴வரதனும் ॥8॥
Meaning
மஹாகாய: ஸ:-அயம் - that Asura of gigantic proportions; தவ சரண-பாத-ப்ரமதி²த: - by the blow of Thy foot crushed; க³லத்-ரக்த: வக்த்ராத்- - with blood flowing out of his mouth; அபதத்- - fell; ருஷிபி⁴: ஶ்லாகி⁴த-ஹதி: - the sages praised his slaying; ததா³ த்வாம்- - then to Thee; உத்³தா³ம-ப்ரமத³ப⁴ர-வித்³யோதி-ஹ்ருத³யா - with their hearts full and brimming with joy; முனீந்த்³ரா: - the great sages; ஸாந்த்³ராபி⁴: ஸ்துதிபி⁴:- - with verses full of deep meaning; அனுவன்- - praised; அத்⁴வர-தனும் - O Thou! The Embodiment of Yajna;
Translation
That gigantic Asura crushed by the powerful blow of Thy foot, fell down with blood flowing out of his mouth. The sages praised his slaying. O Thou! Who are the embodiment of Yajna! As they did so their hearts were full and brimming with joy. They sang hymns with deep meaning.

த்வசி ச²ந்தோ³ ரோமஸ்வபி குஶக³ணஶ்சக்ஷுஷி க்⁴ருதம்
சதுர்ஹோதாரோங்க்⁴ரௌ ஸ்ருக³பி வத³னே சோத³ர இடா³ ।
க்³ரஹா ஜிஹ்வாயாம் தே பரபுருஷ கர்ணே ச சமஸா
விபோ⁴ ஸோமோ வீர்யம் வரத³ க³லதே³ஶேப்யுபஸத:³ ॥9॥
Meaning
த்வசி ச²ந்த:³ - in Thy skin are the Vedic Metres; ரோமஸு-அபி குஶக³ண:- - Thy hair are the Kush grass; சக்ஷுஷி க்⁴ருதம் - Thy eyes are ghee; சதுர்ஹோதார:-அங்க்⁴ரௌ - Thy feet are the four sacrificing priests; ஸ்ருக்³-அபி வத³னே - Thy face is 'sruk' (the ladle used for offering); ச-உத³ர இடா³ - and Thy stomach the 'ida' (the vessel used for keeping the ingredients for offering); க்³ரஹா ஜிஹ்வாயாம் தே - Thy tongue the soma pot; பரபுருஷ - O Infinite Lord!; கர்ணே ச சமஸா - Thy ears are the chamasas (vessel used for keeping the sacrificial remnants); விபோ⁴ - O Lord!; ஸோமோ வீர்யம் - Thy virility is Soma; வரத³ - O Bestower of Boons!; க³லதே³ஶே-அபி-உபஸத:³ - in Thy neck are the sacrifices called 'Upasat' (the subsidiary rites);
Translation
O Infinite Lord! In Thy skin are the Vedic Mantras, Thy hair are the 'kush' grass, Thy eyes are the ghee, Thy feet are the four sacrificing priests, Thy face is 'sruk',( the ladle for sacrifice) and Thy stomach is the 'Ida' (the vessel which holds the sacrificial ingredients), Thy tongue is the soma pot. O Lord! Thy ears are the chamasas (the vessel which holds the sacrificial remnants) and Thy virility is soma. O Bestower of Boons! in Thy neck are the sacrifices called Upasat, (the subsidiary rites). Thou are the embodiment of the holy Yagna.

முனீந்த்³ரை:-இத்யாதி³- - by the various great sages; ஸ்தவன-முக²ரை:-மோதி³த-மனா - who were intoning such hymns,; மோதி³த-மனா - being delighted; மஹீயஸ்யா மூர்த்யா - with a splendid form and; விமலதர-கீர்த்யா ச - with unblemished glory; விலஸன் - shining; ஸ்வதி⁴ஷ்ண்யம் ஸம்ப்ராப்த: - reaching Thy abode of Vaikunth; ஸுக-²ரஸ-விஹாரீ - O Thee! Reveling in Thy own Bliss!; மது⁴ரிபோ - O Destroyer of Madhu!; நிருந்த்⁴யா ரோக³ம் மே - destroy ailments of mine; ஸகலம்-அபி - all of them; வாதாலயபதே - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
O Lord of Guruvaayur! O Destroyer of Madhu! Delighted with the hymns of the sages Thou shone with Thy huge and adorable form and taintless glory and retired to Thy abode of Vaikunth, revelling in Thy innate Bliss. May Thou be pleased to eradicate all my ailments.
