ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரியவ்ரதஸ்ய ப்ரியபுத்ரபூ⁴தா-
தா³க்³னீத்⁴ரராஜாது³தி³தோ ஹி நாபி⁴: ।
த்வாம் த்³ருஷ்டவானிஷ்டத³மிஷ்டிமத்⁴யே
தவைவ துஷ்ட்யை க்ருதயஜ்ஞகர்மா ॥1॥
Meaning
ப்ரியவ்ரதஸ்ய - of Priyavrata; ப்ரியபுத்ரபூ⁴தாத்-ஆக்³னீத்⁴ர-ராஜாத்- - from the dear son king Aagnidhra; உதி³த: ஹி நாபி⁴: - was born Naabhi, indeed,; த்வாம் த்³ருஷ்டவான்-இஷ்டத³ம்- - (he) saw Thee the fulfiller of desire; இஷ்டி-மத்⁴யே - during the Yanjya; தவ-ஏவ துஷ்ட்யை - for propitiating Thee alone; க்ருத-யஜ்ஞ-கர்மா - (who) had performed a Yanjya;
Translation
King Priyavrata had a dear son named Asgnidhra king, of whom Naabhi was born. While Naabhi was performing a Yanjya, for propitiating Thee, he had a vision of Thee, the bestower of desired boons to devotees.
ஶ்லோக:
அபி⁴ஷ்டுதஸ்தத்ர முனீஶ்வரைஸ்த்வம்
ராஜ்ஞ: ஸ்வதுல்யம் ஸுதமர்த்²யமான: ।
ஸ்வயம் ஜனிஷ்யேஹமிதி ப்³ருவாண-
ஸ்திரோத³தா⁴ ப³ர்ஹிஷி விஶ்வமூர்தே ॥2॥
Meaning
அபி⁴ஷ்டுத:-தத்ர - being praised there (in the yanjya); முனீஶ்வரை:-த்வம் - by the great sages Thou; ராஜ்ஞ: ஸ்வதுல்யம் ஸுதம்- - for the king a son like Thee; அர்த்²யமான: - being prayed for; ஸ்வயம் ஜனிஷ்யே-அஹம்- - I shall Myself be born; இதி ப்³ருவாண:- - saying thus; திரோத³தா⁴ ப³ர்ஹிஷி - (Thou) disappeared in the sacrificial fire; விஶ்வமூர்தே - O Lord! With the cosmos as Thy form;
Translation
O Lord of the whole universe! The sages sang Thy praises and the king prayed to Thee for a son like Thyself. Thou then declared that Thou would Thyself be born as his son and then Thou disappeared in the sacrificial fire.
ஶ்லோக:
நாபி⁴ப்ரியாயாமத² மேருதே³வ்யாம்
த்வமம்ஶதோபூ⁴: ரூஷபா⁴பி⁴தா⁴ன: ।
அலோகஸாமான்யகு³ணப்ரபா⁴வ-
ப்ரபா⁴விதாஶேஷஜனப்ரமோத:³ ॥3॥
Meaning
நாபி⁴-ப்ரியாயாம்-அத² - to Naabhi's dear wife, then; மேருதே³வ்யாம் - named Merudevi; த்வம்-அம்ஶத:-அபூ⁴: - Thou as a part incarnation were born; ரூஷப-⁴அபி⁴தா⁴ன: - with the name Rishabha; அலோக-ஸாமான்ய-கு³ண-ப்ரபா⁴வ - endowed with sublime and rare virtues; ப்ரபா⁴வித-அஶேஷ-ஜன-ப்ரமோத:³ - causing to countless people great delight (with Thy glory);
Translation
Then Thou were born as a part incarnation with the name Rishabha to Merudevi the wife of Naabhi. Thou delighted everyone with sublime virtues and glory not commonly seen in the world.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வயி த்ரிலோகீப்⁴ருதி ராஜ்யபா⁴ரம்
நிதா⁴ய நாபி⁴: ஸஹ மேருதே³வ்யா ।
தபோவனம் ப்ராப்ய ப⁴வன்னிஷேவீ
க³த: கிலானந்த³பத³ம் பத³ம் தே ॥4॥
Meaning
த்வயி த்ரிலோகீப்⁴ருதி - On Thee, the ruler of the three worlds; ராஜ்ய-பா⁴ரம் நிதா⁴ய - transferring the responsibility of governance; நாபி⁴: ஸஹ மேருதே³வ்யா - Naabhi along with Merudevi; தபோவனம் ப்ராப்ய - reaching the forest; ப⁴வத்-னிஷேவீ - and worshipping Thee; க³த: கில-ஆனந்த³பத³ம் - indeed attained the state of bliss; பத³ம் தே - abode of Thine;
Translation
Naabhi entrusted the administration of the kingdom to Thee, who are the ruler of the three worlds and went away to the forest with his wife Merudevi to lead an ascetic life. Worshipping Thee there, he attained to Thy state of Supreme Bliss.
ஶ்லோக:
இந்த்³ரஸ்த்வது³த்கர்ஷக்ருதாத³மர்ஷா-
த்³வவர்ஷ நாஸ்மின்னஜனாப⁴வர்ஷே ।
யதா³ ததா³ த்வம் நிஜயோக³ஶக்த்யா
ஸ்வவர்ஷமேனத்³வ்யத³தா⁴: ஸுவர்ஷம் ॥5॥
Meaning
இந்த்³ர:-த்வத்-உத்கர்ஷக்ருதாத்- - Indra by Thy achievements; அமர்ஷாத் - out of jealousy; வவர்ஷ ந-அஸ்மின்- - did not shower rain on this; அஜனாப⁴வர்ஷே - (land) Ajanaabh-varsha; யதா³ ததா³ த்வம் - when (this happened) then Thou; நிஜ-யோக-³ஶக்த்யா - by Thy yogic power; ஸ்வ-வர்ஷம்-ஏனத்- - on Thy own kingdom brought; வ்யத³தா⁴: ஸுவர்ஷம் - abundant rainfall;
Translation
Owing to jealousy at the prosperity of the world generated by Thy (Rishabha's) greatness, Indra withheld rain from the continent Ajanaabha. Thereupon Thou by Thy yogic power brought enough rain on this Thy continent.
ஶ்லோக:
ஜிதேந்த்³ரத³த்தாம் கமனீம் ஜயந்தீ-
மதோ²த்³வஹன்னாத்மரதாஶயோபி ।
அஜீஜனஸ்தத்ர ஶதம் தனூஜா-
நேஷாம் க்ஷிதீஶோ ப⁴ரதோக்³ரஜன்மா ॥6॥
Meaning
ஜிதேந்த்³ர-த³த்தாம் - given by Indra; கமனீம் ஜயந்தீம்- - beautiful Jayanti; அத-²உத்³வஹன்- - then marrying; ஆத்மரத-ஆஶய:-அபி - even though ever absorbed in Brahman; அஜீஜன:-தத்ர ஶதம் தனூஜான்- - (he) begot hundred sons; ஏஷாம் க்ஷிதீஶ: ப⁴ரத:- - among them, king Bharat; அக்³ர-ஜன்மா - was the eldest;
Translation
Thus defeated, Indra bestowed beautiful Jayanti on Thee as Thy wife. Though Thou were ever absorbed in the Aatman, Thou begot in her one hundred sons, the eldest of whom was king Bharat.
ஶ்லோக:
நவாப⁴வன் யோகி³வரா நவான்யே
த்வபாலயன் பா⁴ரதவர்ஷக²ண்டா³ன் ।
ஸைகா த்வஶீதிஸ்தவ ஶேஷபுத்ர-
ஸ்தபோப³லாத் பூ⁴ஸுரபூ⁴யமீயு: ॥7॥
Meaning
நவ-அப⁴வன் யோகி³வரா: - nine of them became great yogis; நவ-அன்யே-து- - another nine indeed; அபாலயன் பா⁴ரதவர்ஷக²ண்டா³ன் - ruled over the various regions of Bharatavarsha; ஸைகா து-அஶீதி:- - one and eighty however; தவ ஶேஷ புத்ர:- - Thy remaining sons; தபோப³லாத் - by the power of their austerities; பூ⁴ஸுரபூ⁴யம்-ஈயு: - attained Braahminhood;
Translation
Nine of them became great yogis, and another nine ruled over the various regions of Bhaaaratavarsha. Thy remaining eighty-one sons attained Braahminhood by the power of their austerities.
ஶ்லோக:
உக்த்வா ஸுதேப்⁴யோத² முனீந்த்³ரமத்⁴யே
விரக்திப⁴க்த்யன்விதமுக்திமார்க³ம் ।
ஸ்வயம் க³த: பாரமஹம்ஸ்யவ்ருத்தி-
மதா⁴ ஜடோ³ன்மத்தபிஶாசசர்யாம் ॥8॥
Meaning
உக்த்வா ஸுதேப்⁴ய:-அத² - instructing the sons then; முனீந்த்³ர-மத்⁴யே - in the midst of great sages; விரக்தி-ப⁴க்தி-அன்வித- - comprising of renunciation and devotion; முக்தி-மார்க³ம் - the path of liberation; ஸ்வயம் க³த: - Thyself went (took to); பாரமஹம்ஸ்யவ்ருத்திம்- - the way of the life of Paramahansas; அதா⁴: - adopting; ஜட-³உன்மத்த-பிஶாச-சர்யாம் - the behaviour of idiots lunatics and ghosts;
Translation
Afterwards Thou instructed Thy sons along with the great ascetics in the path of salvation through renunciation and devotion. Then adopting the life of a total renunciate Thou moved about behaving like an idiot, a mad man or a ghost.
ஶ்லோக:
பராத்மபூ⁴தோபி பரோபதே³ஶம்
குர்வன் ப⁴வான் ஸர்வனிரஸ்யமான: ।
விகாரஹீனோ விசசார க்ருத்ஸ்னாம்
மஹீமஹீனாத்மரஸாபி⁴லீன: ॥9॥
Meaning
பராத்மபூ⁴த:-அபி - though one with the Supreme Aatman; பர-உபதே³ஶம் குர்வன் - giving instructions to others; ப⁴வான் ஸர்வ-னிரஸ்ய-மான: - Thou being insulted by others; விகார-ஹீன: - free from attachment (or aversion); விசசார - wondered; க்ருத்ஸ்னாம் மஹீம்- - all over the earth; அஹீன-ஆத்மரஸ-அபி⁴லீன: - completely absorbed in the bliss of the Supreme Self;
Translation
Though Thou had attained complete identity with the Brahman, Thou continued to impart knowledge to others. Thou were free from attachment and aversion, though Thou were treated with indifference.Thou wandered all over the earth completely absorbed in the bliss of the Supreme self.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶயுவ்ரதம் கோ³ம்ருக³காகசர்யாம்
சிரம் சரன்னாப்ய பரம் ஸ்வரூபம் ।
த³வாஹ்ருதாங்க:³ குடகாசலே த்வம்
தாபான் மமாபாகுரு வாதனாத² ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஶயு-வ்ரதம் - the way of the life of the python; கோ³-ம்ருக-³காக-சர்யாம் - and the ways of the cow, dear and crow; சிரம் சரன்- - practising for a long time; ஆப்ய பரம் ஸ்வரூபம் - attaining oneness with the Supreme Brahman; த³வா-ஹ்ருத-அங்க:³ - with body perishing in the forest fire; குடகாசலே த்வம் - in the Coorg mountains, Thou; தாபான் மம-அபாகுரு - ailments of mine do destroy; வாதனாத² - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Observing the ways of the life of a python, a cow, a deer, and a crow, Thou wandered about for long, attaining identity with the Supreme Brahman. Thy body then perished in the forest fire in the Coorg mountains. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Deign to eradicate my afflictions.
