ப்ருதோ²ஸ்து நப்தா ப்ருது²த⁴ர்மகர்மட:²
ப்ராசீனப³ர்ஹிர்யுவதௌ ஶதத்³ருதௌ ।
ப்ரசேதஸோ நாம ஸுசேதஸ: ஸுதா-
நஜீஜனத்த்வத்கருணாங்குரானிவ ॥1॥
Meaning
ப்ருதோ²:-து நப்தா - Prithu's great grand son; ப்ருது²-த⁴ர்ம-கர்மட:² - intensely performing righteous deeds; ப்ராசீனப³ர்ஹி:- - named Praacheenbarhi; யுவதௌ ஶதத்³ருதௌ - through young Shatadruti; ப்ரசேதஸ: நாம - by the name of Prachetas; ஸுசேதஸ: ஸுதான்- - pure minded sons (ten); அஜீஜனத்- - gave birth to; த்வத்-கருணா-அங்குரான்-இவ - like sprouts of Thy compassion embodied;
Translation
Prithu's great grand son Praacheenbarhis, who was reputed for his undertakings for the good of the world had the young lady Shatadruti for his wife. From her, as though sprouts of Thy compassion ,ten noble minded sons were born to him known by the group name of Prachetas.
ஶ்லோக:
பிது: ஸிஸ்ருக்ஷானிரதஸ்ய ஶாஸனாத்³-
ப⁴வத்தபஸ்யாபி⁴ரதா த³ஶாபி தே
பயோனிதி⁴ம் பஶ்சிமமேத்ய தத்தடே
ஸரோவரம் ஸந்த³த்³ருஶுர்மனோஹரம் ॥2॥
Meaning
பிது: ஸிஸ்ருக்ஷா-னிரதஸ்ய - the father who was intent on creation; ஶாஸனாத்- - by his direction; ப⁴வத்-தபஸ்யா-அபி⁴ரதா த³ஶ-அபி தே - those ten engrossed upon meditating on Thee; பயோனிதி⁴ம் பஶ்சிமம்-ஏத்ய - going to the western sea; தத்-தடே ஸரோவரம் ஸந்த³த்³ருஶு:- - on its shore saw a lake; மனோஹரம் - beautiful;
Translation
Commanded by their father to multiply the species, these ten brothers, being firm believers in the importance of Thy worship, went to the western sea to meditate. On the shore of that sea they saw a beautiful lake.
ஶ்லோக:
ததா³ ப⁴வத்தீர்த²மித³ம் ஸமாக³தோ
ப⁴வோ ப⁴வத்ஸேவகத³ர்ஶனாத்³ருத: ।
ப்ரகாஶமாஸாத்³ய புர: ப்ரசேதஸா-
முபாதி³ஶத் ப⁴க்ததமஸ்தவ ஸ்தவம் ॥3॥
Meaning
ததா³ ப⁴வத்-தீர்த²ம்-இத³ம் - then this Thy holy lake; ஸமாக³த: ப⁴வ: - frequented by Shiva; ப⁴வத்-ஸேவக-த³ர்ஶன-ஆத்³ருத: - eager to see Thy devotees; ப்ரகாஶம்-ஆஸாத்³ய - manifested himself; புர: ப்ரசேதஸாம்- - before the Prachetas; உபாதி³ஶத் - and taught; ப⁴க்ததம:- - (himself) a great devotee to (Thee); தவ ஸ்தவம் - Thy great hymn;
Translation
Then, Thy greatest devotee, Lord Shiva who is always eager to see Thy devotees, came to this holy lake of Thine and appearing before the Prachetaas, taught them a great hymn in praise of Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ்தவம் ஜபந்தஸ்தமமீ ஜலாந்தரே
ப⁴வந்தமாஸேவிஷதாயுதம் ஸமா: ।
ப⁴வத்ஸுகா²ஸ்வாத³ரஸாத³மீஷ்வியான்
ப³பூ⁴வ காலோ த்⁴ருவவன்ன ஶீக்⁴ரதா ॥4॥
Meaning
ஸ்தவம் ஜபந்த:-தம்-அமீ - that hymn singing, these (Prachetaas); ஜல-அந்தரே - in the water; ப⁴வந்தம்-ஆஸேவிஷத- - on Thee meditated; அயுதம் ஸமா: - for ten thousand years; ப⁴வத்-ஸுக-²ஆஸ்வாத்³-ரஸாத்- - because of the joy they were experiencing in meditating on Thee; அமீஷு- - for them; இயான் ப³பூ⁴வ கால: - such a long time passed; த்⁴ருவவத்-ன ஶீக்⁴ரதா - like Dhruva it did not happen quickly;
Translation
These devotees chanting the hymn, spent ten thousand years in water, in Thy worship and meditation on Thee. For the attainment of the bliss of Thy realisation, they had to spend this long period in austerities unlike Dhruva who got it very quickly.
ஶ்லோக:
தபோபி⁴ரேஷாமதிமாத்ரவர்தி⁴பி⁴:
ஸ யஜ்ஞஹிம்ஸானிரதோபி பாவித: ।
பிதாபி தேஷாம் க்³ருஹயாதனாரத-³
ப்ரத³ர்ஶிதாத்மா ப⁴வதா³த்மதாம் யயௌ ॥5॥
Meaning
தபோபி⁴:-ஏஷாம்- - by their penance; அதி-மாத்ர-வர்தி⁴பி⁴: - which was increasing in intensity; ஸ யஜ்ஞ-ஹிம்ஸா-னிரத:-அபி - he, though engaged in killing animals for the sacrifices; பாவித: - became purified; பிதா-அபி தேஷாம் - (he) their father; க்³ருஹயாத-னாரத-³ - (to whose) house Naarada went; ப்ரத³ர்ஶித-ஆத்மா - (from Naarada) obtaining the knowledge of Aatman; ப⁴வத்-ஆத்மதாம் யயௌ - attained to Thee;
Translation
By the increasing strength of their penance, their father Praacheenbarhis also became purified who had slain many animals in the sacrificial fires. Naarada who had gone to his house, gave him the knowledge of Aatman by which he attained a form like Thine.
ஶ்லோக:
க்ருபாப³லேனைவ புர: ப்ரசேதஸாம்
ப்ரகாஶமாகா³: பதகே³ந்த்³ரவாஹன: ।
விராஜி சக்ராதி³வராயுதா⁴ம்ஶுபி⁴-
ர்பு⁴ஜாபி⁴ரஷ்டாபி⁴ருத³ஞ்சிதத்³யுதி: ॥6॥
Meaning
க்ருபா-ப³லேன-ஏவ - by Thy compassion alone; புர: ப்ரசேதஸாம் - before the Prachetas; ப்ரகாஶம்-ஆகா³: - Thou manifested Thyself; பதகே³ந்த்³ர-வாஹன: - having Garuda as vehicle; விராஜி சக்ர-ஆதி³-வர-ஆயுத-⁴அம்ஶுபி⁴:- - lustrous by the resplendent discus and other divine weapons; பு⁴ஜாபி⁴:-அஷ்டாபி⁴:- - glorious with eight arms; உத³ஞ்சித-த்³யுதி: - spreading lustre;
Translation
By virtue of Thy compassion alone, Thou appeared before the Prachetas. Thou were seated on Thy vehicle Garuda, having eight arms, holding the resplendent discus and other divine weapons and spreading lustre all around.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரசேதஸாம் தாவத³யாசதாமபி
த்வமேவ காருண்யப⁴ராத்³வரானதா³: ।
ப⁴வத்³விசிந்தாபி ஶிவாய தே³ஹினாம்
ப⁴வத்வஸௌ ருத்³ரனுதிஶ்ச காமதா³ ॥7॥
Meaning
ப்ரசேதஸாம் தாவத்- - to the Prachetas, then; அயாசதாம்-அபி - though unsought for; த்வம்-ஏவ காருண்ய-ப⁴ராத்- - Thou Thyself out of infinite compassion; வரான்-அதா³: - gave boons; ப⁴வத்-விசிந்தா-அபி - even the thought of Thee; ஶிவாய தே³ஹினாம் ப⁴வது- - may be for the benefit of the humans; அஸௌ ருத்³ரனுதி:-ச - this Rudra hymn also; காமதா³ (ப⁴வது) - may be a fulfiller of desires;
Translation
Out of Thy infinite compassion, Thou gave the Prachetas boons,even without their asking. May even Thy thought be for the benefit of the humans and confer welfare on them, and may the Rudra hymn be the fulfiller of all desires.
ஶ்லோக:
அவாப்ய காந்தாம் தனயாம் மஹீருஹாம்
தயா ரமத்⁴வம் த³ஶலக்ஷவத்ஸரீம் ।
ஸுதோஸ்து த³க்ஷோ நனு தத்க்ஷணாச்ச மாம்
ப்ரயாஸ்யதே²தி ந்யக³தோ³ முதை³வ தான் ॥8॥
Meaning
அவாப்ய காந்தாம் - getting as wife; தனயாம் மஹீருஹாம் - the daughter of the trees; தயா ரமத்⁴வம் - with her enjoy; த³ஶலக்ஷ-வத்ஸரீம் - for ten lakhs of years; ஸுத:-அஸ்து த³க்ஷ: - may you have a son named Daksha; நனு தத்-க்ஷணாத்- - immediately then; ச மாம் ப்ரயாஸ்யத-²இதி - attain me also, thus; ந்யக³த:³ - saying so; முதா³-ஏவ தான் - pleasingly to them;
Translation
Being highly pleased with the Prachetas Thou blessed them that they would get the daughter of the trees as their wife. They would lead a happy life with her for ten lakh of years. Also that they would have a son named Daksha and soon thereafter they would attain Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ததஶ்ச தே பூ⁴தலரோதி⁴னஸ்தரூன்
க்ருதா⁴ த³ஹந்தோ த்³ருஹிணேன வாரிதா: ।
த்³ருமைஶ்ச த³த்தாம் தனயாமவாப்ய தாம்
த்வது³க்தகாலம் ஸுகி²னோபி⁴ரேமிரே ॥9॥
Meaning
தத:-ச தே - then they (the trees); பூ⁴-தல-ரோதி⁴ன:-தரூன் - which were covering the whole surface of the earth, the trees,; க்ருதா⁴ த³ஹந்த: - burning (the trees) in anger; த்³ருஹிணேன வாரிதா: - were stopped by Brahmaa; த்³ருமை:-ச த³த்தாம் தனயாம்- - the trees gave their daughter; அவாப்ய தாம் - (they) getting her; த்வத்-உக்த-காலம் - for the duration mentioned by Thee; ஸுகி²ன:-அபி⁴ரேமிரே - they lived happily;
Translation
Then the Prachetas who were angered by the dense growth of the trees which were covering the surface of the whole earth and causing obstruction, started to burn them. They were dissuaded by Brahmaa to do so. Obligingly the trees gave them their daughter in marriage and they lived with her happily for the time specified by Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
அவாப்ய த³க்ஷம் ச ஸுதம் க்ருதாத்⁴வரா:
ப்ரசேதஸோ நாரத³லப்³த⁴யா தி⁴யா ।
அவாபுரானந்த³பத³ம் ததா²வித-⁴
ஸ்த்வமீஶ வாதாலயனாத² பாஹி மாம் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
அவாப்ய த³க்ஷம் ச ஸுதம் - and getting the son named Daksha; க்ருத-அத்⁴வரா: - (and) having performed Brahma Satra; ப்ரசேதஸ: - the Prachetas; நாரத-³லப்³த⁴யா தி⁴யா - with the knowledge received from Naarada; அவாபு:-ஆனந்த-³பத³ம் - attained the state of bliss; ததா²-பி³த:⁴-த்வம்- - Thou who are thus; ஈஶ - O Lord!; வாதாலயனாத² - Lord of Guruvaayur!; பாஹி மாம் - protect me.;
Translation
After begetting the son Daksha and performing several sacrificial rites and having received the highest knowledge from Naarada they attained liberation. O Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are of such merciful nature, grant protection to me.
