கூ³ட⁴ம் வஸுதே³வகி³ரா கர்தும் தே நிஷ்க்ரியஸ்ய ஸம்ஸ்காரான் ।
ஹ்ருத்³க³தஹோராதத்த்வோ க³ர்க³முனிஸ்த்வத் க்³ருஹம் விபோ⁴ க³தவான் ॥1॥
Meaning
கூ³ட⁴ம் - secretly (said); வஸுதே³வ-கி³ரா - the words of Vasudeva (directed by that); கர்தும் தே - to do (perform) Thy; நிஷ்க்ரியஸ்ய - who are above all rites and rituals; ஸம்ஸ்காரான் - (Thy) sacraments; ஹ்ருத்³-க³த-ஹோரா-தத்வ: - an expert in astrology; க³ர்க-³முனி: - Garga Muni; த்வத்-க்³ருஹம் - to Thy house; விபோ⁴ - O Lord!; க³தவான் - went;
Translation
O All pervading Lord! Thou are above and beyond all ceremonies and rites. Yet, Garga Muni an expert at astronomy and astrology, went to Thy house at the secret request of Vasudeva, to perform sacraments for Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
நந்தோ³த² நந்தி³தாத்மா வ்ருந்தி³ஷ்டம் மானயன்னமும் யமினாம் ।
மந்த³ஸ்மிதார்த்³ரமூசே த்வத்ஸம்ஸ்காரான் விதா⁴துமுத்ஸுகதீ⁴: ॥2॥
Meaning
நந்த:³-அத² - Nanda, then; நந்தி³த-ஆத்மா - delightfully; வ்ருந்தி³ஷ்டம் - the greatest of all; மானயன்-அமும் - honouring, this (Garga Muni); யமினாம் - (greatest) of all the sages; மந்த்³-ஸ்மித-ஆர்த்³ரம்-ஊசே - with a gentle smile said (requested); த்வத்-ஸம்ஸ்காரன் - sacraments for Thee; விதா⁴தும்-உத்ஸுக-தீ⁴: - to perform (who) was eager;
Translation
Nanda was very delighted and he honoured the greatest of all the sages Garga Muni, who was eager to perform the sacraments for Thee. He then, with a gentle smile requested the sage to perform the rites.
ஶ்லோக:
யது³வம்ஶாசார்யத்வாத் ஸுனிப்⁴ருதமித³மார்ய கார்யமிதி கத²யன் ।
க³ர்கோ³ நிர்க³தபுலகஶ்சக்ரே தவ ஸாக்³ரஜஸ்ய நாமானி ॥3॥
Meaning
யது³வம்ஶ- - of the Yadu clan; ஆசார்யத்வாத் - being the priest; ஸுனிப்⁴ருதம்-இத³ம்- - very secretly this; ஆர்ய கார்யம்-இதி - O Respected One (Nanda), should be done, thus; கத²யன் க³ர்க:³ - saying, sage Garga; நிர்க³த-புலக:- - with horripilation; சக்ரே தவ - performed, Thy with Thy elder brother's; ஸாக்³ரஜஸ்ய நாமானி - naming (ceremony);
Translation
Sage Garga said,'O Respected Nanda, since I am the priest of the Yadu clan, this ceremony must be performed in great secrecy'. Saying so, with horripilation over his body he performed the naming ceremony of Thee and Thy elder brother.
ஶ்லோக:
கத²மஸ்ய நாம குர்வே ஸஹஸ்ரனாம்னோ ஹ்யனந்தனாம்னோ வா ।
இதி நூனம் க³ர்க³முனிஶ்சக்ரே தவ நாம நாம ரஹஸி விபோ⁴ ॥4॥
Meaning
கத²ம்-அஸ்ய - how, for this (child); நாம குர்வே - naming should I do; ஸஹஸ்ர-னாம்ன: ஹி- - (who) having a thousand names indeed; அனந்த-னாம்ன: வா - or rather having endless names; இதி நூனம் - thus surely (thinking); க³ர்க-³முனி:- - Garga Muni; சக்ரே தவ நாம - performed Thy naming; நாம ரஹஸி - in great secrecy; விபோ⁴ - O Lord!;
Translation
How should I do the naming of this child? He indeed has thousands of names or rather endless names. O Lord! May be that sage Garga thinking like this, performed Thy naming in great secrecy.
ஶ்லோக:
க்ருஷிதா⁴துணகாராப்⁴யாம் ஸத்தானந்தா³த்மதாம் கிலாபி⁴லபத் ।
ஜக³த³க⁴கர்ஷித்வம் வா கத²யத்³ருஷி: க்ருஷ்ணனாம தே வ்யதனோத் ॥5॥
Meaning
க்ருஷி-தா⁴து- - Krish, the root (verb); ண-காராப்⁴யாம் - and with N suffix (by putting the two together); ஸத்தா-ஆனந்த-³ஆத்மதாம் - Existence Bliss (being Thy) real nature; கில-அபி⁴லபத் - indeed denoting; ஜக³த்-அக-⁴கர்ஷித்வம் வா - or of (the people of) the world, the sins, drawing away; கத²யத்-ருஷி: - declaring, the sage; க்ருஷ்ண-னாம தே - the name Krishna to Thee; வ்யதனோத் - gave;
Translation
The putting together of the root of the verb Krish and the suffix N, denoting the combining of Existence and absolute Bliss, which is Thy real nature, declaring, the sage gave Thee the name Krishna. Also signifying the drawing away of the sins of the people of the world, the name Krishna was given to Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
அன்யாம்ஶ்ச நாமபே⁴தா³ன் வ்யாகுர்வன்னக்³ரஜே ச ராமாதீ³ன் ।
அதிமானுஷானுபா⁴வம் ந்யக³த³த்த்வாமப்ரகாஶயன் பித்ரே ॥6॥
Meaning
அன்யான்-ச நாம-பே⁴தா³ன் - and other different names; வ்யாகுர்வன்- - giving (like Vaasudeva); அக்³ரஜே ச ராம-ஆதீ³ன் - and to Thy elder brother Raama etc (calling thus); அதிமானுஷ-அனுபா⁴வம் - (of a) superhuman disposition; ந்யக³த³த்- - told (indicated); த்வாம்-அப்ரகாஶயன் - Thee not revealing; பித்ரே - to (Thy) father;
Translation
The sage also gave Thee other different names like Vaasudeva. Then he gave the name Raama etc to Thy elder brother. Having done so, Garg Muni indicated to Thy having superhuman powers and disposition, to Thy father. Yet he did not fully reveal Thy real identity as Lord Himself.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ்னிஹ்யதி யஸ்தவ புத்ரே முஹ்யதி ஸ ந மாயிகை: புன: ஶோகை: ।
த்³ருஹ்யதி ய: ஸ து நஶ்யேதி³த்யவத³த்தே மஹத்த்வம்ருஷிவர்ய: ॥7॥
Meaning
ஸ்னிஹ்யதி ய:-தவ புத்ரே - whoever loves your son; முஹ்யதி ஸ ந மாயிகை: - he will not be deluded by Maayaa; புன: ஶோகை: - (and) again by sorrows; த்³ருஹ்யதி ய: - he who goes against him; ஸ து நஶ்யேத்- - he certainly will be destroyed; இதி-அவத³த்- - thus said; தே மஹத்த்வம்- - Thy glory; ருஷிவர்ய: - the great sage;
Translation
Who so ever loves your son will not be deluded by Maayaa and so will not be overcome by sorrows thereafter. And who so ever assails him will certainly perish.' Thus the great sage described Thy glory and greatness.
ஶ்லோக:
ஜேஷ்யதி ப³ஹுதரதை³த்யான் நேஷ்யதி நிஜப³ந்து⁴லோகமமலபத³ம் ।
ஶ்ரோஷ்யஸி ஸுவிமலகீர்தீரஸ்யேதி ப⁴வத்³விபூ⁴திம்ருஷிரூசே ॥8॥
Meaning
ஜேஷ்யதி ப³ஹுதர-தை³த்யான் - will conquer many Asuras; நேஷ்யதி நிஜப³ந்து⁴-லோகம்- - will take his own people; அமல-பத³ம் - to the pure realm; ஶ்ரோஷ்யஸி - will make you hear; ஸுவிமல-கீர்தீ:-அஸ்ய- - very pure fame, his; இதி ப⁴வத்-விபூ⁴திம்- - thus Thy greatness; ருஷி:-ஊசே - the sage spoke;
Translation
He will conquer many Asuras and will take his own people to the realms of purity. You will have occasions to hear of his untainted pure fame.' Thus the sage spoke of Thy greatness.
ஶ்லோக:
அமுனைவ ஸர்வது³ர்க³ம் தரிதாஸ்த² க்ருதாஸ்த²மத்ர திஷ்ட²த்⁴வம் ।
ஹரிரேவேத்யனபி⁴லபன்னித்யாதி³ த்வாமவர்ணயத் ஸ முனி: ॥9॥
Meaning
அமுனா-ஏவ - by him alone; ஸர்வ-து³ர்க³ம் தரிதாஸ்த² - all obstacles (you) will cross; க்ருத-ஆஸ்த²ம்-அத்ர - placing your faith here; திஷ்ட²த்⁴வம் - remain; ஹரி:-ஏவ-இதி- - Hari only is this; அனபி⁴லபன்- - not saying; இத்யாதி³ - in this manner; த்வாம்-அவர்ணயத் - Thee described; ஸ முனி: - that sage;
Translation
By his help alone you will be able to overcome all obstacles. Remain with your full faith placed in him.' Thus without saying that Thou were Hari, the sage thus described Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
க³ர்கே³த² நிர்க³தேஸ்மின் நந்தி³தனந்தா³தி³னந்த்³யமானஸ்த்வம் ।
மத்³க³த³முத்³க³தகருணோ நிர்க³மய ஶ்ரீமருத்புராதீ⁴ஶ ॥1௦॥
Meaning
க³ர்கே³-அத² - then Garg Muni; நிர்க³தே-அஸ்மின் - having left, he,; நந்தி³த-னந்த-³ஆதி³- - delighted Nanda and others; நந்த்³யமான:-த்வம் - endeared Thou; மத்-க³த³ம்- - my ailments; உத்³க³த-கருண: - (Thou) full of compassion; நிர்க³மய - remove; ஶ்ரீமருத்புராதீ⁴ஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Then Garga Muni went away. Nanda and the others were very delighted and looked after Thee endearingly. O Lord of Guruvaayur! who are full of compassion, remove my ailments.
