அதீத்ய பா³ல்யம் ஜக³தாம் பதே த்வமுபேத்ய பௌக³ண்ட³வயோ மனோஜ்ஞம் ।
உபேக்ஷ்ய வத்ஸாவனமுத்ஸவேன ப்ராவர்ததா² கோ³க³ணபாலனாயாம் ॥1॥
Meaning
அதீத்ய பா³ல்யம் - passing childhood; ஜக³தாம் பதே - O Lord of the universe; த்வம்-உபேத்ய - Thou attained; பௌக³ண்ட-³வய: மனோஜ்ஞம் - the boyhood age (which was very) charming; உபேக்ஷ்ய வத்ஸாவனம்- - giving up tending the calves; உத்ஸவேன ப்ராவர்ததா² - enthusiastically got into; கோ³-க³ண-பாலனாயாம் - the looking after of the herd of cows;
Translation
O Lord of the universe! Having passed childhood Thou attained the charming age of boyhood (6 to 10 years). Then Thou gave up the tending of the calves and enthusiastically promoted to herding cows and cattle.
ஶ்லோக:
உபக்ரமஸ்யானுகு³ணைவ ஸேயம் மருத்புராதீ⁴ஶ தவ ப்ரவ்ருத்தி: ।
கோ³த்ராபரித்ராணக்ருதேவதீர்ணஸ்ததே³வ தே³வாரப⁴தா²ஸ்ததா³ யத் ॥2॥
Meaning
உபக்ரமஸ்ய- - for the beginning; அனுகு³ண-ஏவ - it was proper indeed; ஸா-இயம் - that this; மருத்புராதீ⁴ஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur; தவ ப்ரவ்ருத்தி: - Thy occupation (because); கோ³த்ரா-பரித்ராண- - (for) the earth's protection; க்ருதே-அவதீர்ண:- - as the purpose, was Thy incarnation; தத்-ஏவ - that itself; தே³வ-ஆரப⁴தா²:- - O Lord Thou started; ததா³ யத் - then because;
Translation
O Lord! This occupation that Thou took up was the fit and proper beginning for the work which lay ahead. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Thy incarnation was for the protection of 'Gotra', the earth, and tending 'Gotras', the cows, was a first step towards that end.
ஶ்லோக:
கதா³பி ராமேண ஸமம் வனாந்தே வனஶ்ரியம் வீக்ஷ்ய சரன் ஸுகே²ன ।
ஶ்ரீதா³மனாம்ன: ஸ்வஸக²ஸ்ய வாசா மோதா³த³கா³ தே⁴னுககானநம் த்வம் ॥3॥
Meaning
கதா³பி ராமேண ஸமம் - once along with Balaraam; வனாந்தே - in the end of the woods; வனஶ்ரியம் வீக்ஷ்ய - the beauty of the woods admiring; சரன் ஸுகே²ன - and roaming about happily; ஶ்ரீதா³ம-னாம்ன: - by the name of Shreedaamaa; ஸ்வஸக²ஸ்ய வாசா - Thy friend's suggestion; மோதா³த்-அகா³: - with joy went; தே⁴னுக-கானநம் - to the Dhenuka forest; த்வம் - Thou;
Translation
Once, with Balaraam, as Thou were happily roaming about in the woods and admiring the beauty of the woods, on Thy friend Sudaamaa's suggestion, Thou enthusiastically entered the Dhenuka forest.
ஶ்லோக:
உத்தாலதாலீனிவஹே த்வது³க்த்யா ப³லேன தூ⁴தேத² ப³லேன தோ³ர்ப்⁴யாம் ।
ம்ருது³: க²ரஶ்சாப்⁴யபதத்புரஸ்தாத் ப²லோத்கரோ தே⁴னுகதா³னவோபி ॥4॥
Meaning
உத்தால-தாலீ-னிவஹே - (when) the tall palm tree clusters; த்வத்-உக்த்யா - at Thy words; ப³லேன தூ⁴தே-அத² - by Balaraam was shaken, then,; ப³லேன தோ³ர்ப்⁴யாம் - with the force of both the hands; ம்ருது³: க²ர:-ச- - soft/ripe and hard/unripe; அப்⁴யபதத்-புரஸ்தாத் - fell down in front; ப²ல-உத்கர: - a bunch of fruits; தே⁴னுக-தா³னவ:-அபி - the Dhenuka demon also; (க²ர:-ச அப்⁴யபதத்) - (as a donkey appeared);
Translation
At Thy words, Balaraam shook the cluster of tall palm trees with the force of both his strong arms. A bunch of soft and ripe and hard and unripe fruits fell in front of Thee. Just then, the demon Dhenukaasura, in the form of a donkey also appeared.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸமுத்³யதோ தை⁴னுகபாலனேஹம் கத²ம் வத⁴ம் தை⁴னுகமத்³ய குர்வே ।
இதீவ மத்வா த்⁴ருவமக்³ரஜேன ஸுரௌக⁴யோத்³தா⁴ரமஜீக⁴னஸ்த்வம் ॥5॥
Meaning
ஸமுத்³யத: - engaged in; தை⁴னுக-பாலனே-அஹம் - the cows' protection, I; கத²ம் - how; வத⁴ம் தை⁴னுகம்-அத்³ய - (can I) kill Dhenuka (even though just a namesake) now; குர்வே இதி-இவ - do so , thus like that; மத்வா - thinking; த்⁴ருவம்-அக்³ரஜேன - certainly by Thy elder brother; ஸுரௌக-⁴யோத்³தா⁴ரம்- - the enemy of the gods; அஜீக⁴ன:-த்வம் - caused to be killed Thou;
Translation
I am engaged in protecting the cows (Dhenuka), how can I now kill the Dhenuka (cow) asura?' Thus interpreting, as it were, Thou made Balaraam Thy elder brother kill Dhenukaasura who was an enemy of the gods.
ஶ்லோக:
ததீ³யப்⁴ருத்யானபி ஜம்பு³கத்வேனோபாக³தானக்³ரஜஸம்யுதஸ்த்வம் ।
ஜம்பூ³ப²லானீவ ததா³ நிராஸ்த²ஸ்தாலேஷு கே²லன் ப⁴க³வன் நிராஸ்த:² ॥6॥
Meaning
ததீ³ய-ப்⁴ருத்யான்-அபி - his (Dhenukaasura's) servants also; ஜம்பு³கத்வேன-உபாக³தான்- - (who were) as jackals and had come; அக்³ரஜ-ஸம்யுத:-த்வம் - along with Thy elder brother Thou; ஜம்பு³-ப²லானி-இவ - like black-berries; ததா³ நிராஸ்த:²- - then smashed; தாலேஷு கே²லன் - on the palm trees as mere play; ப⁴க³வன் - O Lord; நிராஸ்த:² - effortlessly;
Translation
Dhenukaasura's servants had also come in the form of jackals. O Lord! Thou and Thy elder brother, as if in mere play, smashed them effortlessly against the palm trees as though they were mere black-berries.
ஶ்லோக:
வினிக்⁴னதி த்வய்யத² ஜம்பு³கௌக⁴ம் ஸனாமகத்வாத்³வருணஸ்ததா³னீம் ।
ப⁴யாகுலோ ஜம்பு³கனாமதே⁴யம் ஶ்ருதிப்ரஸித்³த⁴ம் வ்யதி⁴தேதி மன்யே ॥7॥
Meaning
வினிக்⁴னதி - when killing; த்வயி அத² - Thou (were) then; ஜம்பு³க-ஔக⁴ம் - the pack of jackals; ஸனாமகத்வாத்- - because of having the same name; வருண:-ததா³னீம் - Varuna, then; ப⁴யாகுல: - out of fear; ஜம்பு³க-னாம-தே⁴யம் - his name 'Jambuka'; ஶ்ருதி-ப்ரஸித்³த⁴ம் வ்யதி⁴த- - famous in the Vedas, hid it (in the Vedas only); இதி மன்யே - this I believe;
Translation
Then when Thou were killing the pack of jackals, Jambukas, Varuna, the water god, whose name is famous in the Vedas as Jambuka, hid it in the Vedas only, for the fear of being killed. I believe that it is for this reason that Varuna's name as 'Jambuka' is not known.
ஶ்லோக:
தவாவதாரஸ்ய ப²லம் முராரே ஸஞ்ஜாதமத்³யேதி ஸுரைர்னுதஸ்த்வம் ।
ஸத்யம் ப²லம் ஜாதமிஹேதி ஹாஸீ பா³லை: ஸமம் தாலப²லான்யபு⁴ங்க்தா²: ॥8॥
Meaning
தவ-அவதாரஸ்ய ப²லம் - Thy incarnation's results; முராரே - O Slayer of Mura!; ஸஞ்ஜதம்-அத்³ய- - has appeared now; இதி ஸுரை:-னுத: த்வம் - thus by the gods, being praised, Thou; ஸத்யம் ப²லம் - truly fruit; ஜாதம்-இஹ-இதி - is born here thus; ஹாஸீ பா³லை: ஸமம் - laughingly (saying) with the boys; தால ப²லானி- - the palm fruits; அபு⁴ங்க்தா²: - ate;
Translation
O Slayer of Mura! The gods praised Thee saying that the fruit of Thy incarnation has now appeared. Thou laughingly said that 'indeed the fruits of the palm tree have been got now', and saying so, ate the fruits with the boys.
ஶ்லோக:
மது⁴த்³ரவஸ்ருந்தி ப்³ருஹந்தி தானி ப²லானி மேதோ³ப⁴ரப்⁴ருந்தி பு⁴க்த்வா ।
த்ருப்தைஶ்ச த்³ருப்தைர்ப⁴வனம் ப²லௌக⁴ம் வஹத்³பி⁴ராகா³: க²லு பா³லகைஸ்த்வம் ॥9॥
Meaning
மது⁴த்³ரவ-ஸ்ருந்தி - with honey like juice dripping; ப்³ருஹந்தி தானி ப²லானி - those large fruits; மேதோ³ப⁴ர-ப்⁴ருந்தி - full of flesh; பு⁴க்த்வா த்ருப்தை:-ச - having eaten and satisfied; த்³ருப்தை:-ப⁴வனம் - and triumphant, to the house; ப²லௌக⁴ம் வஹத்³பி⁴:- - loads of fruit carrying; ஆகா³: க²லு - returned indeed; பா³லகை:-த்வம் - with the boys, Thou;
Translation
Thou ate the nectar like juice dripping luscious and fleshy fruits with the boys to Thy heart's content. Fully satisfied and triumphant Thou returned to the house carrying along loads of such fruits.
ஶ்லோக:
ஹதோ ஹதோ தே⁴னுக இத்யுபேத்ய ப²லான்யத³த்³பி⁴ர்மது⁴ராணி லோகை: ।
ஜயேதி ஜீவேதி நுதோ விபோ⁴ த்வம் மருத்புராதீ⁴ஶ்வர பாஹி ரோகா³த் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஹத: ஹத: தே⁴னுக: - killed killed is Dhenuka; இதி-உபேத்ய - thus (saying and) approaching; ப²லானி-அத³த்³பி⁴:- - the fruits eating; மது⁴ராணி - (which were) sweet; லோகை: ஜய-இதி - by the people, 'Victory to Thee'; ஜீவ-இதி - long live' thus; நுத: விபோ⁴ த்வம் - praised O Lord Thou; மருத்புராதீ⁴ஶ்வர - O Lord of Guruvaayur; பாஹி ரோகா³த் - save from ailments;
Translation
O Omnipresent and Omnipotent Lord! The people approached Thee cheering that Dhenukaasura was killed. They praised Thee saying, 'Victory to Thee', 'May Thou live long', as they ate the sweet fruits. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Do save me from my ailments.
