இதி த்வயி ரஸாகுலம் ரமிதவல்லபே⁴ வல்லவா:
கதா³பி புரமம்பி³காமிதுரம்பி³காகானநே ।
ஸமேத்ய ப⁴வதா ஸமம் நிஶி நிஷேவ்ய தி³வ்யோத்ஸவம்
ஸுக²ம் ஸுஷுபுரக்³ரஸீத்³வ்ரஜபமுக்³ரனாக³ஸ்ததா³ ॥1॥
Meaning
இதி த்வயி - in this manner (when) Thou; ரஸ-ஆகுலம் - in bliss immersed; ரமித-வல்லபே⁴ - were entertaining the Gopikaas; வல்லவா: கதா³பி - (at that time) the Gopas once; புரம்-அம்பி³கா-கமிது:- - (to) the temple of Ambikaa's husband (Shiva); அம்பி³கா-கானநே - in the Ambika (named) forest; ஸமேத்ய ப⁴வதா ஸமம் - going along with Thee; நிஶி நிஷேவ்ய - in the night having performed; தி³வ்ய-உத்ஸவம் - the divine festival; ஸுக²ம் ஸுஷுபு:- - happily slept; அக்³ரஸீத்-வ்ரஜபம்- - swallowed Nanda Gopa; உக்³ரனாக:³-ததா³ - a fierce snake then;
Translation
In this manner, as Thou were entertaining the Gopikaas and they were immersed in bliss, the Gopas went to the temple of Lord Shiva, Ambikaa's (Paarvati's) husband. Thou went along with them to the temple which was in the forest named Ambikaa. After the divine festival had been performed, they all slept happily in the night. Then a fierce snake swallowed Nanda Gopa.

ஸமுன்முக²மதோ²ல்முகைரபி⁴ஹதேபி தஸ்மின் ப³லா-
த³முஞ்சதி ப⁴வத்பதே³ ந்யபதி பாஹி பாஹீதி தை: ।
ததா³ க²லு பதா³ ப⁴வான் ஸமுபக³ம்ய பஸ்பர்ஶ தம்
ப³பௌ⁴ ஸ ச நிஜாம் தனும் ஸமுபஸாத்³ய வைத்³யத⁴ரீம் ॥2॥
Meaning
ஸமுன்முக²ம்- - who was looking up; அத-²உல்முகை:- - then with burning logs of wood; அபி⁴ஹதே-அபி-தஸ்மின் - being thrashed even, he; ப³லாத்-அமுஞ்சதி - from his hold did not release; ப⁴வத்-பதே³ ந்யபதி - on Thy feet fell (the Gopas); பாஹி பாஹி-இதி தை: - save save, thus by them (was said); ததா³ க²லு - then indeed; பதா³ ப⁴வான் - by foot Thou; ஸமுபக³ம்ய - going near; பஸ்பர்ஶ தம் - touched him; ப³பௌ⁴ ஸ ச - became he and; நிஜாம் தனும் - his own body; ஸமுபஸாத்³ய - attaining; வைத்³யத⁴ரீம் - Vidyaadharee (form);
Translation
The fierce snake was looking up. In spite of being thrashed with burning logs of wood, it did not loose hold of his prey. The Gopas fell on Thy feet and prayed for protection. Then indeed Thou went near and touched him with Thy foot, and he became his own body and attained the former form of Vidyaadharee.

ஸுத³ர்ஶனத⁴ர ப்ரபோ⁴ நனு ஸுத³ர்ஶனாக்²யோஸ்ம்யஹம்
முனீன் க்வசித³பாஹஸம் த இஹ மாம் வ்யது⁴ர்வாஹஸம் ।
ப⁴வத்பத³ஸமர்பணாத³மலதாம் க³தோஸ்மீத்யஸௌ
ஸ்துவன் நிஜபத³ம் யயௌ வ்ரஜபத³ம் ச கோ³பா முதா³ ॥3॥
Meaning
ஸுத³ர்ஶனத⁴ர ப்ரபோ⁴ - Wielder of Sudarshana, O Lord!; நனு ஸுத³ர்ஶன-ஆக்²ய:- - indeed Sudarshana named; அஸ்மி-அஹம் - am I; முனீன் க்வசித்- - the sages once; அபாஹஸம் - (I) ridiculed; தே-இஹ மாம் - they here me; வ்யது⁴:-வாஹஸம் - made a python; ப⁴வத்-பத-³ - Thy feet; ஸமர்பணாத்- - by contact; அமலதாம் க³த:-அஸ்மி - purification reached (have) I; இதி-அஸௌ ஸ்துவன் - thus he praising; நிஜபத³ம் யயௌ - (to) his own abode went; வ்ரஜபத³ம் ச - and to Vraja; கோ³பா முதா³ - the Gopas (went) happily;
Translation
O Lord! Wielder of Sudarshana! I am Sudarshana by name. Having sinned the sages for ridiculing them, they cursed me to remain here as a python. I have reached purification by the touch of Thy feet.' Thus praising Thee, he went back to his abode, while the Gopas also happily returned to Vraja.

Meaning
கதா³பி க²லு - once indeed; ஸீரிணா விஹரதி - with Balaraam strolling about; த்வயி ஸ்த்ரீஜனை:- - when Thou were (and) with the women folk; ஜஹார த⁴னத-³அனுக:³ - kidnapped, Kuber's emissary; ஸ கில - he indeed; ஶங்க²சூட:³- - Shankhachooda; அப³லா: - the women; அதித்³ருதம்- - very hastily; அனுத்³ருத:-தம்-அத² - (Thou) pursuing him, then; முக்த-னாரீ-ஜனம் - releasing the women folk; ருரோஜித² - (Thou) killed him; ஶிரோமணிம் - (and) the crest pearl; ஹலப்⁴ருதே ச - to Balaraam and; தஸ்ய-அத³தா³: - his (Shankhacooda's) gave;
Translation
Once indeed in Balaraam's company and with the women folk Thou were strolling about. Shankhachooda, an emissary of Kubera, kidnapped the women. Thou hastily pursued him and killed him and liberated the women. Thou gave the crest pearl of Shankhachooda to Thy brother Balaraam.

தி³னேஷு ச ஸுஹ்ருஜ்ஜனைஸ்ஸஹ வனேஷு லீலாபரம்
மனோப⁴வமனோஹரம் ரஸிதவேணுனாதா³ம்ருதம் ।

Meaning
தி³னேஷு ச - and all during the day; ஸுஹ்ருத்-ஜனை:-ஸஹ - with the friends; வனேஷு லீலாபரம் - in the forest engaged in play; மனோப⁴வ-மனோஹரம் - enchanting Cupid; ரஸித-வேணு- - lusciously, the flute's; நாத-³அம்ருதம் - notes flowing like nectar; ப⁴வந்தம்- - Thee; அமரீ-த்³ருஶாம்- - to the celestial damsels' sight; அம்ருத-பாரணா-தா³யினம் - nectar drink giving; விசிந்த்ய - thinking about (all this); கிமு ந-ஆலபன் - what all did not lament; விரஹ-தாபிதா - separation pangs suffering; கோ³பிகா: - the Gopikaas;
Translation
During the day Thou were engaged in play with friends in the forest. Enchanting even Cupid, Thou played the flute with luscious notes flowing like nectar. Thy sight was like a drink of nectar to the eyes of the celestial damsels. Thinking about all this the Gopikaas suffered pangs of separation and what all lamentations did they not give in to.
ஶ்லோக:
போ⁴ஜராஜப்⁴ருதகஸ்த்வத² கஶ்சித் கஷ்டது³ஷ்டபத²த்³ருஷ்டிரரிஷ்ட: ।
நிஷ்டு²ராக்ருதிரபஷ்டு²னினாத³ஸ்திஷ்ட²தே ஸ்ம ப⁴வதே வ்ருஷரூபீ ॥6॥
Meaning
போ⁴ஜராஜ-ப்⁴ருதக:- - Kamsaa's emissary; து-அத² கஶ்சித் - then some one; கஷ்ட-து³ஷ்ட- - cruel and evil; பத-²த்³ருஷ்டி:-அரிஷ்ட: - ways looking for, (named) Arishta; நிஷ்டு²ர-ஆக்ருதி:- - terrific in appearance; அபஷ்டு²-னினாத:³- - (and) horrible bellowings; திஷ்ட²தே ஸ்ம ப⁴வதே - stood before Thee; வ்ருஷரூபீ - in the form of a bull;
Translation
Once, some emissary of Kansa, always looking for ways to do cruel and evil deeds, Arishta by name, terrific in appearance, bellowing horribly, in the form of a bull stood before Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶாக்வரோத² ஜக³தீத்⁴ருதிஹாரீ மூர்திமேஷ ப்³ருஹதீம் ப்ரத³தா⁴ன: ।
பங்க்திமாஶு பரிகூ⁴ர்ண்ய பஶூனாம் ச²ந்த³ஸாம் நிதி⁴மவாப ப⁴வந்தம் ॥7॥
Meaning
ஶாக்வர:-அத² - (this) bull then; ஜக³தீ-த்⁴ருதி-ஹாரீ - (who was) the world's peace plunderer; மூர்திம்-ஏஷ - in a form, he; ப்³ருஹதீம் ப்ரத³தா⁴ன: - (which was) huge assumed; பங்க்திம்-ஆஶு - the herd soon; பரிகூ⁴ர்ண்ய - driving away; பஶூனாம் - of the cows; ச²ந்த³ஸாம் நிதி⁴ம்- - of the Veda's repository (Thee); அவாப ப⁴வந்தம் - approached Thee;
Translation
Then this bull who was the plunderer of the peace of the world, he assumed a form which was huge and driving away the herds of cows, soon approached Thee who are repository of Vedas.
ஶ்லோக:
துங்க³ஶ்ருங்க³முக²மாஶ்வபி⁴யந்தம் ஸங்க்³ருஹய்ய ரப⁴ஸாத³பி⁴யம் தம் ।
ப⁴த்³ரரூபமபி தை³த்யமப⁴த்³ரம் மர்த³யன்னமத³ய: ஸுரலோகம் ॥8॥
Meaning
துங்க-³ஶ்ருங்க-³முக²ம்- - raising the horns and head; ஆஶு-அபி⁴யந்தம் - hastily rushing; ஸங்க்³ருஹய்ய ரப⁴ஸாத்- - catching swiftly; அபி⁴யம் தம் - fearlessly, him; ப⁴த்³ர-ரூபம்-அபி - (who was) in an auspicious form, though; தை³த்யம்-அப⁴த்³ரம் - (he was) an Asura inauspicious; மர்த³யன்-அமத³ய: - killing, (Thou) delighted; ஸுரலோகம் - the gods;
Translation
Raising his horns and head he was rushing hastily towards Thee. Thou caught hold of him swiftly and fearlessly who was an inauspicious Asura, though he was in an auspicious form of a bull. Thou then crushed him to death and so delighted the gods.
ஶ்லோக:
சித்ரமத்³ய ப⁴க³வன் வ்ருஷகா⁴தாத் ஸுஸ்தி²ராஜனி வ்ருஷஸ்தி²திருர்வ்யாம் ।
வர்த⁴தே ச வ்ருஷசேதஸி பூ⁴யான் மோத³ இத்யபி⁴னுதோஸி ஸுரைஸ்த்வம் ॥9॥
Meaning
சித்ரம்-அத்³ய - surprisingly now (today); ப⁴க³வன் - O Lord!; வ்ருஷ-கா⁴தாத் - by the bull's killing; ஸுஸ்தி²ரா-அஜனி - very firm has become; வ்ருஷ-ஸ்தி²தி:- - the righteousness (Dharma's) status; உர்வ்யாம் - on the earth; வர்த⁴தே ச - and is increasing; வ்ருஷ-சேதஸி - in Indra's mind; பூ⁴யான் மோத³ - great joy; இதி-அபி⁴னுத:-அஸி - thus praised were; ஸுரை:-த்வம் - by the gods Thou;
Translation
"O Lord! It is amazing that today by the killing of the bull, the status of righteousness (Dharma) is strengthened on the earth. The great joy in Indra's mind is also enhanced." Thus Thou were praised by the gods.
ஶ்லோக:
ஔக்ஷகாணி பரிதா⁴வத தூ³ரம் வீக்ஷ்யதாமயமிஹோக்ஷவிபே⁴தீ³ ।
இத்த²மாத்தஹஸிதை: ஸஹ கோ³பைர்கே³ஹக³ஸ்த்வமவ வாதபுரேஶ ॥1௦॥

ஔக்ஷகாணி - O bulls; பரிதா⁴வத தூ³ரம் - run away far; வீக்ஷ்யதாம்- - see; அயம்-இஹ- - this here; உக்ஷவிபே⁴தீ³ - the bull slayer; இத்த²ம்-ஆத்த-ஹஸிதை: - thus making jokes; ஸஹ கோ³பை:- - with the Gopas; கே³ஹக:³-த்வம்- - went home Thou; அவ வாதபுரேஶ - save me O Lord of Guruvaayur;
Translation
O bulls! Run far away. See here is this slayer of bulls.' Thou went home with the Gopas who were joking in this manner. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Save me.
