ஸமனுஸ்ம்ருததாவகாங்க்⁴ரியுக்³ம:
ஸ மனு: பங்கஜஸம்ப⁴வாங்கஜ³ன்மா ।
நிஜமந்தரமந்தராயஹீனம்
சரிதம் தே கத²யன் ஸுக²ம் நினாய ॥1॥
Meaning
ஸமனுஸ்ம்ருத-தாவக-அங்க்⁴ரி-யுக்³ம: - meditating properly on Thy pair of lotus feet; ஸ: மனு: - that Manu (Swayambhuva); பங்கஜஸம்ப⁴வ-அங்க-³ஜன்மா - the son of Brahmaa; நிஜம்-அந்தரம்- - his own Manvantara; அந்தராய-ஹீனம் - free from all hindrances; சரிதம் தே கத²யன் - recounting Thy glories; ஸுக²ம் நினாய - passed peacefully;
Translation
That Swayambhuva Manu, the son of Brahmaa, spent his own Manvantara peacefully, free from all hindrances, meditating on Thy pair of lotus feet and recounting Thy glories.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸமயே க²லு தத்ர கர்த³மாக்²யோ
த்³ருஹிணச்சா²யப⁴வஸ்ததீ³யவாசா ।
த்⁴ருதஸர்க³ரஸோ நிஸர்க³ரம்யம்
ப⁴க³வம்ஸ்த்வாமயுதம் ஸமா: ஸிஷேவே ॥2॥
Meaning
ஸமயே க²லு தத்ர - at that very time; கர்த³ம-ஆக்²ய: - (the Prajaapati) named Kardama; த்³ருஹிண-ச்சா²ய-ப⁴வ:- - born from the shadow of Brahmaa; ததீ³ய-வாசா - following his (Brahmaa's) words; த்⁴ருத-ஸர்க-³ரஸ: - keenly interested in creation; நிஸர்க-³ரம்யம் ப⁴க³வன்-த்வாம்- - O Lord! Who are naturally charming; அயுதம் ஸமா: - for ten thousand years; ஸிஷேவே - worshipped (Thee);
Translation
During that time the Prajaapati named Kardama who was born from the shadow of Brahmaa, following his (Brahmaa's) words became keenly interested in creation. He worshipped Thee who are naturally charming, for ten thousand years.
ஶ்லோக:
க³ருடோ³பரி காலமேக⁴க்ரமம்
விலஸத்கேலிஸரோஜபாணிபத்³மம் ।
ஹஸிதோல்லஸிதானநம் விபோ⁴ த்வம்
வபுராவிஷ்குருஷே ஸ்ம கர்த³மாய ॥3॥
Meaning
க³ருட-³உபரி - on Garuda; கால-மேக-⁴க்ரமம் - as beautiful as a dark rain-bearing cloud; விலஸத்-கேலி-ஸரோஜ-பாணி-பத்³மம் - holding in Thy hand a lustrous lotus; ஹஸித-உல்லாஸித-ஆனநம் - (with Thy) face lit up with a smile; விபோ⁴ த்வம் - O Lord! Thou; வபு:-ஆவிஷ்குருஷே ஸ்ம - (Thy) form did manifest; கர்த³மாய - for Kardama;
Translation
O Lord! Thou manifested Thy form for Kardama, sitting on Garuda, as beautiful as a dark rain-bearing cloud, holding a lustrous lotus in Thy hand, with your face lit up with a smile.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ்துவதே புலகாவ்ருதாய தஸ்மை
மனுபுத்ரீம் த³யிதாம் நவாபி புத்ரீ: ।
கபிலம் ச ஸுதம் ஸ்வமேவ பஶ்சாத்
ஸ்வக³திம் சாப்யனுக்³ருஹ்ய நிர்க³தோபூ⁴: ॥4॥
Meaning
ஸ்துவதே புலக-ஆவ்ருதாய தஸ்மை - with horripilation over his body, who was praising (Thee) to him; மனுபுத்ரீம் - the daughter of Manu (Devahooti); த³யிதாம் - as wife; நவ-அபி புத்ரீ: - also nine daughters; கபிலம் ச ஸுதம் - and Kapil as son; ஸ்வம்-ஏவ பஶ்சாத் - Thyself finally; ஸ்வக³திம் ச-அபி-அனுக்³ருஹ்ய - and union with Thee also conferring; நிர்க³த:-அபூ⁴: - Thou disappeared;
Translation
Kardama was praising Thee thrilled with devotion. Thou blessed that he would have Manu's daughter Devahooti as wife. Thou also blessed that he would have nine daughters, that Thou Thyself will be born as his son Kapil and also that he (Kadarma) would finally attain union with Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ மனு: ஶதரூபயா மஹிஷ்யா
கு³ணவத்யா ஸுதயா ச தே³வஹூத்யா ।
ப⁴வதீ³ரிதனாரதோ³பதி³ஷ்ட:
ஸமகா³த் கர்த³மமாக³திப்ரதீக்ஷம் ॥5॥
Meaning
ஸ: மனு: - that Manu; ஶதரூபயா மஹிஷ்யா - (along with) queen Shatarupaa; கு³ணவத்யா ஸுதயா தே³வஹூத்யா ச - and the virtuous daughter Devahooti; ப⁴வத்-ஈரித-னாரத-³உபதி³ஷ்ட: - advised by Naarada who was prompted by Thee; ஸமகா³த் கர்த³மம்- - approached Kardama; ஆக³தி-ப்ரதீக்ஷம் - (who was) awaiting (their) arrival;
Translation
Manu along with his queen wife Shatarupa and the virtuous daughter Devahooti, as advised by Naarada who was prompted by Thee, approached Kardama who was awaiting their arrival.
ஶ்லோக:
மனுனோபஹ்ருதாம் ச தே³வஹூதிம்
தருணீரத்னமவாப்ய கர்த³மோஸௌ ।
ப⁴வத³ர்சனநிவ்ருதோபி தஸ்யாம்
த்³ருட⁴ஶுஶ்ரூஷணயா த³தௌ⁴ ப்ரஸாத³ம் ॥6॥
Meaning
மனுனா-உபஹ்ருதாம் ச - and given respectfully by Manu; தே³வஹூதிம் தருணீ-ரத்னம்- - Devahooti, a jewel among damsels; அவாப்ய கர்த³ம:-அஸௌ - having got, that Kardama; ப⁴வத்-அர்சன-னிர்வ்ருத:-அபி - though content with worshipping Thee,; தஸ்யாம் த்³ருட-⁴ஶுஶ்ரூஷணயா - by her dedicated service; த³தௌ⁴ ப்ரஸாத³ம் - (was) pleased with her;
Translation
Devahooti who was a gem among women was respectfully given by Manu to Kardama. Kardama, though solely delighted in worshipping Thee, was pleased with her by her dedicated service to him.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ புனஸ்த்வது³பாஸனப்ரபா⁴வா-
த்³த³யிதாகாமக்ருதே க்ருதே விமானே ।
வனிதாகுலஸங்குலோ நவாத்மா
வ்யஹரத்³தே³வபதே²ஷு தே³வஹூத்யா ॥7॥
Meaning
ஸ: புன;- - he (Kardama); த்வத்-உபாஸன-ப்ரபா⁴வாத்- - because of the glory of Thy worship; த³யிதா-காம-க்ருதே - for fulfilling the desires of his loving wife; க்ருதே விமானே - in the aerial vehicle which was made; வனிதா-குல-ஸங்குல: - full of female attendants; நவ-ஆத்மா - taking on a new body; வ்யஹரத்-தே³வபதே²ஷு - sported in the garden of the gods; தே³வஹூத்யா - (with) Devahooti;
Translation
Thereafter Kardama by the glory of worshipping Thee, to fulfill the desires of his loving wife, took on a new body, got an aerial vehicle made, which was full of female attendants, and sported in the garden of the gods along with Devahooti.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶதவர்ஷமத² வ்யதீத்ய ஸோயம்
நவ கன்யா: ஸமவாப்ய த⁴ன்யரூபா: ।
வனயானஸமுத்³யதோபி காந்தா-
ஹிதக்ருத்த்வஜ்ஜனநோத்ஸுகோ ந்யவாத்ஸீத் ॥8॥
Meaning
ஶத-வர்ஷம்-அத² வ்யதீத்ய - then after spending a hundred years; ஸ:-அயம் - that this (Kardama); நவ கன்யா: ஸமவாப்ய - nine daughters begetting; த⁴ன்ய-ரூபா: - who were very beautiful; வன-யான-ஸமுத்³யத:-அபி - though preparing to go to the forest; காந்தா-ஹித-க்ருத்- - wishing to fulfill the desire of his wife (and); த்வத்-ஜனந-உத்ஸுக: - eager for Thy birth (as his son); ந்யவாத்ஸீத் - stayed on (at home);
Translation
After spending a hundred years thus and begetting nine very beautiful daughters, Kardama wanted to take up the ascetic life and retire to the forest. Yielding to his wife's wishes and eagerly awaiting Thy birth as their son, he continued to stay on at home.
ஶ்லோக:
நிஜப⁴ர்த்ருகி³ரா ப⁴வன்னிஷேவா-
நிரதாயாமத² தே³வ தே³வஹூத்யாம் ।
கபிலஸ்த்வமஜாயதா² ஜனானாம்
ப்ரத²யிஷ்யன் பரமாத்மதத்த்வவித்³யாம் ॥9॥
Meaning
நிஜ-ப⁴ர்த்ரு-கி³ரா - at the words of her husband; ப⁴வத்-னிஷேவா-னிரதாயாம்- - who was ever intent on Thy worship; அத² தே³வ - then, O Lord!; தே³வஹூத்யாம் - to Devahooti; கபில-த்வம்-அஜாயதா² - as Kapil Thou were born; ஜனானாம் - amongst the people; ப்ரத²யிஷ்யன் - to proclaim; பரம-ஆத்ம-தத்வ-வித்³யாம் - the knowledge of the truth of the Supreme Being;
Translation
O Lord! To Devahooti who, on the advise of her husband was ever engaged in worshipping Thee, Thou were born as Kapil in order to teach mankind the means for the attainment of the Supreme Reality.

வனமேயுஷி கர்த³மே ப்ரஸன்னே
மதஸர்வஸ்வமுபாதி³ஶன் ஜனந்யை ।
கபிலாத்மக வாயுமந்தி³ரேஶ
த்வரிதம் த்வம் பரிபாஹி மாம் க³தௌ³கா⁴த் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
வனம்-ஏயுஷி கர்த³மே ப்ரஸன்னே - when Kardama left for the forest happily; மத-ஸர்வஸ்வம்- - the entire philosophy (of Thine); உபாதி³ஶன் ஜனந்யை - (Thou) imparted to (Thy) mother; கபில-ஆத்மக - O Thou incarnate as Kapil!; வாயு-மந்தி³ர-ஈஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; த்வரிதம் - hastily; த்வம் பரிபாஹி - Thou relieve; மாம் க³த-³ஔகா⁴த் - me from my many miseries;
Translation
O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who were incarnate as Kapil, when Kardama left for the forest with a sense of fulfillment, Thou imparted the whole of Thy philosophy to Thy mother. Deign to hastily save me from my many ailments.
