அப⁴யம் ஸத்த்வஸம்ஶஉத்³தி⁴ர்ஜ்ஞானயோக³வ்யவஸ்தி²தி: ।
தா³னம் த³மஶ்ச யஜ்ஞஶ்ச ஸ்வாத்⁴யாயஸ்தப ஆர்ஜவம் ॥ 1 ॥
அஹிம்ஸா ஸத்யமக்ரோத⁴ஸ்த்யாக:³ ஶாந்திரபைஶஉனம் ।
த³யா பூ⁴தேஷ்வலோலுப்த்வம் மார்த³வம் ஹ்ரீரசாபலம் ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning
ஶ்ரீ-ப⁴க³வான் உவாச — the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; அப⁴யம் — fearlessness; ஸத்த்வ-ஸம்ஶுத்³தி⁴: — purification of one’s existence; ஜ்ஞான — in knowledge; யோக³ — of linking up; வ்யவஸ்தி²தி: — the situation; தா³னம் — charity; த³ம: — controlling the mind; ச — and; யஜ்ஞ: — performance of sacrifice; ச — and; ஸ்வாத்⁴யாய: — study of Vedic literature; தப: — austerity; ஆர்ஜவம் — simplicity; அஹிம்ஸா — nonviolence; ஸத்யம் — truthfulness; அக்ரோத:⁴ — freedom from anger; த்யாக:³ — renunciation; ஶாந்தி: — tranquillity; அபைஶுனம் — aversion to fault-finding; த³யா — mercy; பூ⁴தேஷு — towards all living entities; அலோலுப்த்வம் — freedom from greed; மார்த³வம் — gentleness; ஹ்ரீ: — modesty; அசாபலம் — determination; தேஜ: — vigor; க்ஷமா — forgiveness; த்⁴ருதி: — fortitude; ஶௌசம் — cleanliness; அத்³ரோஹ: — freedom from envy; ந — not; அதி-மானிதா — expectation of honor; ப⁴வந்தி — are; ஸம்பத³ம் — the qualities; தை³வீம் — the transcendental nature; அபி⁴ஜாதஸ்ய — of one who is born of; பா⁴ரத — O son of Bharata.
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Fearlessness; purification of one’s existence; cultivation of spiritual knowledge; charity; self-control; performance of sacrifice; study of the Vedas; austerity; simplicity; nonviolence; truthfulness; freedom from anger; renunciation; tranquillity; aversion to faultfinding; compassion for all living entities; freedom from covetousness; gentleness; modesty; steady determination; vigor; forgiveness; fortitude; cleanliness; and freedom from envy and from the passion for honor – these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature.

த³ம்போ⁴ த³ர்போபி⁴மானஶ்ச க்ரோத:⁴ பாருஷ்யமேவ ச ।
அஜ்ஞானம் சாபி⁴ஜாதஸ்ய பார்த² ஸம்பத³மாஸுரீம் ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning
த³ம்ப:⁴ — pride; த³ர்ப: — arrogance; அபி⁴மான: — conceit; ச — and; க்ரோத:⁴ — anger; பாருஷ்யம் — harshness; ஏவ — certainly; ச — and; அஜ்ஞானம் — ignorance; ச — and; அபி⁴ஜாதஸ்ய — of one who is born of; பார்த² — O son of Prithā; ஸம்பத³ம் — the qualities; ஆஸுரீம் — of the demoniac nature.
Translation
Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance – these qualities belong to those of demoniac nature, O son of Prithā.
ஶ்லோக:
தை³வீ ஸம்பத்³விமோக்ஷாய நிப³ந்தா⁴யாஸுரீ மதா ।
மா ஶஉச: ஸம்பத³ம் தை³வீமபி⁴ஜாதோஸி பாண்ட³வ ॥ 5 ॥
Meaning
தை³வீ — transcendental; ஸம்பத் — assets; விமோக்ஷாய — meant for liberation; நிப³ந்தா⁴ய — for bondage; ஆஸுரீ — demoniac qualities; மதா — are considered; மா — do not; ஶுச: — worry; ஸம்பத³ம் — assets; தை³வீம் — transcendental; அபி⁴ஜாத: — born of; அஸி — you are; பாண்டவ³ — O son of Pāṇḍu.
Translation
The transcendental qualities are conducive to liberation, whereas the demoniac qualities make for bondage. Do not worry, O son of Pāṇḍu, for you are born with the divine qualities.
ஶ்லோக:
த்³வௌ பூ⁴தஸர்கௌ³ லோகேஸ்மிந்தை³வ ஆஸுர ஏவ ச ।
தை³வோ விஸ்தரஶ: ப்ரோக்த ஆஸுரம் பார்த² மே ஶருணு ॥ 6 ॥
Meaning
த்³வௌ — two; பூ⁴த-ஸர்கௌ³ — created living beings; லோகே — in the world; அஸ்மின் — this; தை³வ: — godly; ஆஸுர: — demoniac; ஏவ — certainly; ச — and; தை³வ: — the divine; விஸ்தரஶ: — at great length; ப்ரோக்த: — said; ஆஸுரம் — the demoniac; பார்த² — O son of Prithā; மே — from Me; ஶ்ருணு — just hear.
Translation
O son of Prithā, in this world there are two kinds of created beings. One is called divine and the other demoniac. I have already explained to you at length the divine qualities. Now hear from Me of the demoniac.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரவ்ருத்திம் ச நிவ்ருத்திம் ச ஜனா ந விது³ராஸுரா: ।
ந ஶௌசம் நாபி சாசாரோ ந ஸத்யம் தேஷு வித்³யதே ॥ 7 ॥
Meaning
ப்ரவ்ருத்திம் — acting properly; ச — also; நிவ்ருத்திம் — not acting improperly; ச — and; ஜனா: — persons; ந — never; விது³: — know; ஆஸுரா: — of demoniac quality; ந — never; ஶௌசம் — cleanliness; ந — nor; அபி — also; ச — and; ஆசார: — behavior; ந — never; ஸத்யம் — truth; தேஷு — in them; வித்³யதே — there is.
Translation
Those who are demoniac do not know what is to be done and what is not to be done. Neither cleanliness nor proper behavior nor truth is found in them.
ஶ்லோக:
அஸத்யமப்ரதிஷ்ட²ம் தே ஜக³தா³ஹுரனீஶ்வரம் ।
அபரஸ்பரஸம்பூ⁴தம் கிமன்யத்காமஹைதுகம் ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning
அஸத்யம் — unreal; அப்ரதிஷ்ட²ம் — without foundation; தே — they; ஜக³த் — the cosmic manifestation; ஆஹு: — say; அனீஶ்வரம் — with no controller; அபரஸ்பர — without cause; ஸம்பூ⁴தம் — arisen; கிம் அன்யத் — there is no other cause; காம-ஹைதுகம் — it is due to lust only.
Translation
They say that this world is unreal, with no foundation, no God in control. They say it is produced of sex desire and has no cause other than lust.
ஶ்லோக:
ஏதாம் த்³ருஷ்டிமவஷ்டப்⁴ய நஷ்டாத்மானோல்பபு³த்³த⁴ய: ।
ப்ரப⁴வந்த்யுக்³ரகர்மாண: க்ஷயாய ஜக³தோஹிதா: ॥ 9 ॥
Meaning
ஏதாம் — this; த்³ருஷ்டிம் — vision; அவஷ்டப்⁴ய — accepting; நஷ்ட — having lost; ஆத்மான: — themselves; அல்ப-பு³த்³த⁴ய: — the less intelligent; ப்ரப⁴வந்தி — flourish; உக்³ர-கர்மாண: — engaged in painful activities; க்ஷயாய — for destruction; ஜக³த: — of the world; அஹிதா: — unbeneficial.
Translation
Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world.
ஶ்லோக:
காமமாஶ்ரித்ய து³ஷ்பூரம் த³ம்ப⁴மானமதா³ன்விதா: ।
மோஹாத்³க்³ருஹீத்வாஸத்³க்³ராஹான்ப்ரவர்தந்தேஶஉசிவ்ரதா: ॥ 1௦ ॥
Meaning
காமம் — lust; ஆஶ்ரித்ய — taking shelter of; து³ஷ்பூரம் — insatiable; த³ம்ப⁴ — of pride; மான — and false prestige; மத-³அன்விதா: — absorbed in the conceit; மோஹாத் — by illusion; க்³ருஹீத்வா — taking; அஸத் — nonpermanent; க்³ராஹான் — things; ப்ரவர்தந்தே — they flourish; அஶுசி — to the unclean; வ்ரதா: — avowed.
Translation
Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent.
ஶ்லோக:
சிந்தாமபரிமேயாம் ச ப்ரலயாந்தாமுபாஶ்ரிதா: ।
காமோபபோ⁴க³பரமா ஏதாவதி³தி நிஶ்சிதா: ॥ 11 ॥
ஆஶாபாஶஶதைர்ப³த்³தா⁴: காமக்ரோத⁴பராயணா: ।
ஈஹந்தே காமபோ⁴கா³ர்த²மன்யாயேனார்த²ஸஞ்சயான் ॥ 12 ॥
Meaning
சிந்தாம் — fears and anxieties; அபரிமேயாம் — immeasurable; ச — and; ப்ரலய-அந்தாம் — unto the point of death; உபாஶ்ரிதா: — having taken shelter of; காம-உபபோ⁴க³ — sense gratification; பரமா: — the highest goal of life; ஏதாவத் — thus; இதி — in this way; நிஶ்சிதா: — having ascertained; ஆஶா-பாஶ — entanglements in a network of hope; ஶதை: — by hundreds; ப³த்³தா⁴: — being bound; காம — of lust; க்ரோத⁴ — and anger; பராயணா: — always situated in the mentality; ஈஹந்தே — they desire; காம — lust; போ⁴க³ — sense enjoyment; அர்த²ம் — for the purpose of; அன்யாயேன — illegally; அர்த² — of wealth; ஸஞ்சயான் — accumulation.
Translation
They believe that to gratify the senses is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus until the end of life their anxiety is immeasurable. Bound by a network of hundreds of thousands of desires and absorbed in lust and anger, they secure money by illegal means for sense gratification.
ஶ்லோக:
இத³மத்³ய மயா லப்³த⁴மிமம் ப்ராப்ஸ்யே மனோரத²ம் ।
இத³மஸ்தீத³மபி மே ப⁴விஷ்யதி புனர்த⁴னம் ॥ 13 ॥
அஸௌ மயா ஹத: ஶத்ருர்ஹனிஷ்யே சாபரானபி ।
ஈஶ்வரோஹமஹம் போ⁴கீ³ ஸித்³தோ⁴ஹம் ப³லவான்ஸுகீ² ॥ 14 ॥
ஆட்⁴யோபி⁴ஜனவானஸ்மி கோன்யோஸ்தி ஸத்³ருஶோ மயா ।
யக்ஷ்யே தா³ஸ்யாமி மோதி³ஷ்ய இத்யஜ்ஞானவிமோஹிதா: ॥ 15 ॥
Meaning
இத³ம் — this; அத்³ய — today; மயா — by me; லப்³த⁴ம் — gained; இமம் — this; ப்ராப்ஸ்யே — I shall gain; மன:-ரத²ம் — according to my desires; இத³ம் — this; அஸ்தி — there is; இத³ம் — this; அபி — also; மே — mine; ப⁴விஷ்யதி — it will increase in the future; புன: — again; த⁴னம் — wealth; அஸௌ — that; மயா — by me; ஹத: — has been killed; ஶத்ரு: — enemy; ஹனிஷ்யே — I shall kill; ச — also; அபரான் — others; அபி — certainly; ஈஶ்வர: — the lord; அஹம் — I am; அஹம் — I am; போ⁴கீ³ — the enjoyer; ஸித்³த:⁴ — perfect; அஹம் — I am; ப³ல-வான் — powerful; ஸுகீ² — happy; ஆட்⁴ய: — wealthy; அபி⁴ஜன-வான் — surrounded by aristocratic relatives; அஸ்மி — I am; க: — who; அன்ய: — other; அஸ்தி — there is; ஸத்³ருஶ: — like; மயா — me; யக்ஷ்யே — I shall sacrifice; தா³ஸ்யாமி — I shall give charity; மோதி³ஷ்யே — I shall rejoice; இதி — thus; அஜ்ஞான — by ignorance; விமோஹிதா: — deluded.
Translation
The demoniac person thinks: “So much wealth do I have today, and I will gain more according to my schemes. So much is mine now, and it will increase in the future, more and more. He is my enemy, and I have killed him, and my other enemies will also be killed. I am the lord of everything. I am the enjoyer. I am perfect, powerful and happy. I am the richest man, surrounded by aristocratic relatives. There is none so powerful and happy as I am. I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give some charity, and thus I shall rejoice.” In this way, such persons are deluded by ignorance.
ஶ்லோக:
அனேகசித்தவிப்⁴ராந்தா மோஹஜாலஸமாவ்ருதா: ।
ப்ரஸக்தா: காமபோ⁴கே³ஷு பதந்தி நரகேஶஉசௌ ॥ 16 ॥
Meaning
அனேக — numerous; சித்த — by anxieties; விப்⁴ராந்தா: — perplexed; மோஹ — of illusions; ஜால — by a network; ஸமாவ்ருதா: — surrounded; ப்ரஸக்தா: — attached; காம-போ⁴கே³ஷு — to sense gratification; பதந்தி — they glide down; நரகே — into hell; அஶுசௌ — unclean.
Translation
Thus perplexed by various anxieties and bound by a network of illusions, they become too strongly attached to sense enjoyment and fall down into hell.
ஶ்லோக:
ஆத்மஸம்பா⁴விதா: ஸ்தப்³தா⁴ த⁴னமானமதா³ன்விதா: ।
யஜந்தே நாமயஜ்ஞைஸ்தே த³ம்பே⁴னாவிதி⁴பூர்வகம் ॥ 17 ॥
Meaning
ஆத்ம-ஸம்பா⁴விதா: — self-complacent; ஸ்தப்³தா⁴: — impudent; த⁴ன-மான — of wealth and false prestige; மத³ — in the delusion; அன்விதா: — absorbed; யஜந்தே — they perform sacrifice; நாம — in name only; யஜ்ஞை: — with sacrifices; தே — they; த³ம்பே⁴ன — out of pride; அவிதி⁴-பூர்வகம் — without following any rules and regulations.
Translation
Self-complacent and always impudent, deluded by wealth and false prestige, they sometimes proudly perform sacrifices in name only, without following any rules or regulations.
ஶ்லோக:
அஹங்காரம் ப³லம் த³ர்பம் காமம் க்ரோத⁴ம் ச ஸம்ஶ்ரிதா: ।
மாமாத்மபரதே³ஹேஷு ப்ரத்³விஷந்தோப்⁴யஸூயகா: ॥ 18 ॥
Meaning
அஹங்காரம் — false ego; ப³லம் — strength; த³ர்பம் — pride; காமம் — lust; க்ரோத⁴ம் — anger; ச — also; ஸம்ஶ்ரிதா: — having taken shelter of; மாம் — Me; ஆத்ம — in their own; பர — and in other; தே³ஹேஷு — bodies; ப்ரத்³விஷந்த: — blaspheming; அப்⁴யஸூயகா: — envious.
Translation
Bewildered by false ego, strength, pride, lust and anger, the demons become envious of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is situated in their own bodies and in the bodies of others, and blaspheme against the real religion.
ஶ்லோக:
தானஹம் த்³விஷத: க்ரூரான்ஸம்ஸாரேஷு நராத⁴மான் ।
க்ஷிபாம்யஜஸ்ரமஶஉபா⁴னாஸுரீஷ்வேவ யோனிஷு ॥ 19 ॥
Meaning
தான் — those; அஹம் — I; த்³விஷத: — envious; க்ரூரான் — mischievous; ஸம்ஸாரேஷு — into the ocean of material existence; நர-அத⁴மான் — the lowest of mankind; க்ஷிபாமி — I put; அஜஸ்ரம் — forever; அஶுபா⁴ன் — inauspicious; ஆஸுரீஷு — demoniac; ஏவ — certainly; யோனிஷு — into the wombs.
Translation
Those who are envious and mischievous, who are the lowest among men, I perpetually cast into the ocean of material existence, into various demoniac species of life.
ஶ்லோக:
ஆஸுரீம் யோனிமாபன்னா மூடா⁴ ஜன்மனி ஜன்மனி ।
மாமப்ராப்யைவ கௌந்தேய ததோ யாந்த்யத⁴மாம் க³திம் ॥ 2௦ ॥
Meaning
ஆஸுரீம் — demoniac; யோனிம் — species; ஆபன்னா: — gaining; மூடா⁴: — the foolish; ஜன்மனி ஜன்மனி — in birth after birth; மாம் — Me; அப்ராப்ய — without achieving; ஏவ — certainly; கௌந்தேய — O son of Kuntī; தத: — thereafter; யாந்தி — go; அத⁴மாம் — condemned; க³திம் — destination.
Translation
Attaining repeated birth amongst the species of demoniac life, O son of Kuntī, such persons can never approach Me. Gradually they sink down to the most abominable type of existence.
ஶ்லோக:
த்ரிவித⁴ம் நரகஸ்யேத³ம் த்³வாரம் நாஶனமாத்மன: ।
காம: க்ரோத⁴ஸ்ததா² லோப⁴ஸ்தஸ்மாதே³தத்த்ரயம் த்யஜேத் ॥ 21 ॥
Meaning
த்ரி-வித⁴ம் — of three kinds; நரகஸ்ய — of hell; இத³ம் — this; த்³வாரம் — gate; நாஶனம் — destructive; ஆத்மன: — of the self; காம: — lust; க்ரோத:⁴ — anger; ததா² — as well as; லோப:⁴ — greed; தஸ்மாத் — therefore; ஏதத் — these; த்ரயம் — three; த்யஜேத் — one must give up.
Translation
There are three gates leading to this hell – lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.
ஶ்லோக:
ஏதைர்விமுக்த: கௌந்தேய தமோத்³வாரைஸ்த்ரிபி⁴ர்னர: ।
ஆசரத்யாத்மன: ஶ்ரேயஸ்ததோ யாதி பராம் க³திம் ॥ 22 ॥
Meaning
ஏதை: — from these; விமுக்த: — being liberated; கௌந்தேய — O son of Kuntī; தம:-த்³வாரை: — from the gates of ignorance; த்ரிபி⁴: — of three kinds; நர: — a person; ஆசரதி — performs; ஆத்மன: — for the self; ஶ்ரேய: — benediction; தத: — thereafter; யாதி — he goes; பராம் — to the supreme; க³திம் — destination.
Translation
The man who has escaped these three gates of hell, O son of Kuntī, performs acts conducive to self-realization and thus gradually attains the supreme destination.
ஶ்லோக:
ய: ஶாஸ்த்ரவிதி⁴முத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய வர்ததே காமகாரத: ।
ந ஸ ஸித்³தி⁴மவாப்னோதி ந ஸுக²ம் ந பராம் க³திம் ॥ 23 ॥
Meaning
ய: — anyone who; ஶாஸ்த்ர-விதி⁴ம் — the regulations of the scriptures; உத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய — giving up; வர்ததே — remains; காம-காரத: — acting whimsically in lust; ந — never; ஸ: — he; ஸித்³தி⁴ம் — perfection; அவாப்னோதி — achieves; ந — never; ஸுக²ம் — happiness; ந — never; பராம் — the supreme; க³திம் — perfectional stage.
Translation
He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.
ஶ்லோக:
தஸ்மாச்சா²ஸ்த்ரம் ப்ரமாணம் தே கார்யாகார்யவ்யவஸ்தி²தௌ ।
ஜ்ஞாத்வா ஶாஸ்த்ரவிதா⁴னோக்தம் கர்ம கர்துமிஹார்ஹஸி ॥ 24 ॥
Meaning
தஸ்மாத் — therefore; ஶாஸ்த்ரம் — the scriptures; ப்ரமாணம் — evidence; தே — your; கார்ய — duty; அகார்ய — and forbidden activities; வ்யவஸ்தி²தௌ — in determining; ஜ்ஞாத்வா — knowing; ஶாஸ்த்ர — of scripture; விதா⁴ன — the regulations; உக்தம் — as declared; கர்ம — work; கர்தும் — do; இஹ — in this world; அர்ஹஸி — you should.
Translation
One should therefore understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated.
