ததோ மக³த⁴பூ⁴ப்⁴ருதா சிரனிரோத⁴ஸங்க்லேஶிதம்
ஶதாஷ்டகயுதாயுதத்³விதயமீஶ பூ⁴மீப்⁴ருதாம் ।
அனாத²ஶரணாய தே கமபி பூருஷம் ப்ராஹிணோ-
த³யாசத ஸ மாக³த⁴க்ஷபணமேவ கிம் பூ⁴யஸா ॥1॥
Meaning
தத: மக³த-⁴பூ⁴ப்⁴ருதா - then by the Magadh king; சிர-னிரோத-⁴ஸங்க்லேஶிதம் - for long detained (and so) tormented; ஶத-அஷ்டக-யுத-அயுத-த்³விதயம்- - hundred eights along with ten thousand twice (20800); ஈஶ - O Lord!; பூ⁴மீப்⁴ருதாம் - of kings; அனாத-²ஶரணாய தே - for the helpless the only refuge, Thee; கம்-அபி பூருஷம் - some person; ப்ராஹிணோத்-அயாசத ஸ - sent prayed he; மாக³த-⁴க்ஷபணம்-ஏவ - Maagadha's (king of Magadha's) killing only; கிம் பூ⁴யஸா - why say much;
Translation
O Lord! The Magadha king Jaraasandh had 20800 kings as captives in his prison. The tormented kings sent a person as a messenger to Thee, the only refuge of the helpless. He prayed to Thee to kill the king of Magadha. What more can be said.
ஶ்லோக:
யியாஸுரபி⁴மாக³த⁴ம் தத³னு நாரதோ³தீ³ரிதா-
த்³யுதி⁴ஷ்டி²ரமகோ²த்³யமாது³ப⁴யகார்யபர்யாகுல: ।
விருத்³தஜ⁴யினோத்⁴வராது³ப⁴யஸித்³தி⁴ரித்யுத்³த⁴வே
ஶஶம்ஸுஷி நிஜை: ஸமம் புரமியேத² யௌதி⁴ஷ்டி²ரீம் ॥2॥
Meaning
யியாஸு:- - desiring to attack; அபி⁴மாக³த⁴ம் - against the king of Magadha; தத³னு நாரத-³உதீ³ரிதாத்- - after that, by Naarada's saying; யுதி⁴ஷ்டி²ர-மக-²உத்³யமாத்- - Yudhishthiraa's sacrifice preparations; உப⁴ய-கார்ய-பர்யாகுல: - both the jobs priority (thinking); விருத்³த-⁴ஜயின:-அத்⁴வராத்- - enemies conquering and the sacrifice; உப⁴ய-ஸித்³தி⁴:-இதி- - both undertaken thus; உத்³த⁴வே ஶஶம்ஸுஷி - by Udhdhava being advised; நிஜை: ஸமம் - with Thy people; புரம்-இயேத² - to the city went; யௌதி⁴ஷ்டி²ரீம் - of Yudhishthira;
Translation
Then eager to attack Jaraasandha, the king of Magadha, Thou were informed by Naarada that Yudhishthira was preparing to perform the Raajasooya Yagna. Thou were in a fix as to which of the two Thou should attend to. Udhdhava pointed that the sacrifice demanded that all the enemies be conquered, so by attending the sacrifice both the purposes will be fulfilled. With Thy followers Thou proceeded to attend the Raajsooya Yagna in Yudhishthiraa's city Indraprastha.
ஶ்லோக:
அஶேஷத³யிதாயுதே த்வயி ஸமாக³தே த⁴ர்மஜோ
விஜித்ய ஸஹஜைர்மஹீம் ப⁴வத³பாங்க³ஸம்வர்தி⁴தை: ।
ஶ்ரியம் நிருபமாம் வஹன்னஹஹ ப⁴க்ததா³ஸாயிதம்
ப⁴வந்தமயி மாக³தே⁴ ப்ரஹிதவான் ஸபீ⁴மார்ஜுனம் ॥3॥
Meaning
அஶேஷ-த³யிதா-யுதே - all the wives along with; த்வயி ஸமாக³தே - Thou having reached; த⁴ர்மஜ: விஜித்ய - Dharmaputra having conquered; ஸஹஜை:-மஹீம் - with the brothers the earth; ப⁴வத்-அபாங்க-³ஸம்வர்தி⁴தை: - by Thy gracious glances (who had) grown in strength; ஶ்ரியம் நிருபமாம் - wealth incomparable; வஹன்-அஹஹ - bearing, oh; ப⁴க்த-தா³ஸாயிதம் - of the devotees, services meeting; ப⁴வந்தம்-அயி - Thee Oh Thou; மாக³தே⁴ ப்ரஹிதவான் - to Jaraasandh sent; ஸபீ⁴ம-அர்ஜுனம் - along with Bheem and Arjuna;
Translation
Thou reached Indraprastha along with all Thy wives. Enhanced in strength by Thy gracious glances, Dharmaputra with his brothers conquered all the opponents and amassed incomparable wealth. Oh Thou who are the servant of Thy devotees was then sent by Yudhishthira to Jaraasandha along with Bheem and Arjuna.

கி³ரிவ்ரஜபுரம் க³தாஸ்தத³னு தே³வ யூயம் த்ரயோ
யயாச ஸமரோத்ஸவம் த்³விஜமிஷேண தம் மாக³த⁴ம் ।

Meaning
கி³ரிவ்ரஜபுரம் - to the city of Girivraja; க³தா:-தத³னு - went then; தே³வ யூயம் த்ரய: - O Lord Thou three; யயாச ஸமர-உத்ஸவம் - asked for a duel festival; த்³விஜ-மிஷேண - in a Braahmina's guise; தம் மாக³த⁴ம் - to that king of Magadha; அபூர்ண-ஸுக்ருதம் - short of good deeds; து-அமும் - indeed him; பவனஜேன ஸங்க்³ராமயன் - with Bheem making him fight; நிரீக்ஷ்ய ஸஹ ஜிஷ்ணுனா - seeing with Arjuna; த்வம்-அபி - Thou also; ராஜ-யுத்³த்⁴வா ஸ்தி²த: - as making two kings fight remained;
Translation
O Lord! Thou three then went to Girivraja the capital of Jaraasandha. In the guise of Braahmins Thou asked for a festival of dual. Thou made the king of Magadha, Jaraasandha, who was lacking in good deeds, fight with Bheem. Meanwhile, Thou and Arjuna remained as onlookers and 'Raajayudhva' i.e. who make kings fight.

அஶாந்தஸமரோத்³த⁴தம் பி³டபபாடனாஸஞ்ஜ்ஞயா
நிபாத்ய ஜரரஸ்ஸுதம் பவனஜேன நிஷ்பாடிதம் ।
விமுச்ய ந்ருபதீன் முதா³ ஸமனுக்³ருஹ்ய ப⁴க்திம் பராம்
தி³தே³ஶித² க³தஸ்ப்ருஹானபி ச த⁴ர்மகு³ப்த்யை பு⁴வ: ॥5॥
Meaning
அஶாந்த்-ஸமர-உத்³த⁴தம் - in the fierce fight (who had become) arrogant; விடப-பாடனா-ஸஞ்ஜ்ஞயா - twig splitting hinting at; நிபாத்ய ஜரஸ:-ஸுதம் - felling down Jaraa's son (Jaraasandh); பவனஜேன நிஷ்பாடிதம் - by Bheem was split up; விமுச்ய ந்ருபதீன் - releasing the kings; முதா³ ஸமனுக்³ருஹ்ய - happily blessing them; பராம் ப⁴க்திம் தி³தே³ஶித² - supreme devotion gave; க³த: ஸ்ப்ருஹான்-அபி - (who had) overcome all desires even; ச த⁴ர்ம-கு³ப்தை பு⁴வ: - and for ethically ruling the earth;
Translation
Arrogant Jaraasandha was fighting ferociously in the battle. Thou gave a hint to Bheema (that Jaraa's son could be killed by splitting) by splitting a twig. Bheema then tore Jaraasandha apart and killed him. The captive kings were then released and Thou happily blessed them with supreme devotion. They were all devoid of all desire, yet Thou engaged them to rule the earth ethically and as per Dharma.

ப்ரசக்ருஷி யுதி⁴ஷ்டி²ரே தத³னு ராஜஸூயாத்⁴வரம்
ப்ரஸன்னப்⁴ருதகீப⁴வத்ஸகலராஜகவ்யாகுலம் ।

Meaning
ப்ரசக்ருஷி - when performing; யுதி⁴ஷ்டி²ரே - Yudhishthira; தத³னு - then; ராஜஸூய-அத்⁴வரம் - the Raajasooya Yagna; ப்ரஸன்ன-ப்⁴ருதகீ-ப⁴வத்- - happily as servants becoming all the kings; ஸகல-ராஜக-வ்யாகுலம் - all the kings; வ்யகுலம்-த்வம்-அபி- - eagerly Thou also; அயி ஜக³த்பதே - O Thou Lord of the world!; த்³விஜ-பத-³அவனேஜ- - Braahmina's feet washing; ஆதி³கம் சகர்த² - etc performed; கிமு கத்²யதே - what can be said; ந்ருப-வரஸ்ய - of the great king's; பா⁴க்³ய-உன்னதி: - fortune upliftment;
Translation
Yudhishthira was then performing the Raajsooya Yagna during which all the kings were joyfully performing the work allotted to them as servants. Thou O Lord of the Universe! Also were engaged in washing the feet of the holy men and the Braahmins etc. What can be said about the upliftment of the good fortune of the great king Yudhishthira?

விசார்ய ஸஹதே³வவாக³னுக³த: ஸ த⁴ர்மாத்மஜ: ।

தத: ஸவன-கர்மணி - then in the sacrificial rite; ப்ரவரர்ம்-அக்³ர்ய-பூஜா-விதி⁴ம் - the important person's worship system; விசார்ய - foremost considering; ஸஹதே³வ-வாக்-அனுக³த: - Sahadeva's advice following; ஸ த⁴ர்மாத்மஜ: - that Dharmaputra Yudhishthira; வ்யத⁴த்த ப⁴வதே - performed to Thee; முதா³ ஸத³ஸி - in the delighted assembly; விஶ்வபூ⁴தாத்மனே - to Thee, the Soul of the whole Universe; ததா³ ஸ-ஸுர-மானுஷம் - then along with the gods and humans; பு⁴வனம்-ஏவ - the entire universe; த்ருப்திம் த³தௌ⁴ - satisfaction gave;
Translation
According to the system of the sacrificial rite the most noteworthy of the guests assembled was honoured and worshipped foremost. While Yudhishthira was considering, he followed Sahadeva's advice and performed this worship to Thee, the Soul of the whole Universe. This gave great satisfaction to everyone, gods and humans alike.

தத: ஸபதி³ சேதி³போ முனின்ருபேஷு திஷ்ட²த்ஸ்வஹோ
ஸபா⁴ஜயதி கோ ஜட:³ பஶுபது³ர்து³ரூடம் வடும் ।

Meaning
தத: ஸபதி³ சேதி³ப: - then at once, the king of Chedi; முனி-ன்ருபேஷு - the sages and kings; திஷ்ட²த்ஸு-அஹோ - being present, strangely; ஸபா⁴-ஜயதி - the assembly is honouring; க: ஜட:³ - which fool; பஶுப-து³ர்து³ரூடம் வடும் - a cowherd corrupt boy; இதி த்வயி ஸ - thus to Thee he; து³ர்வச:-விததம்- - abusive words' string; உத்³வமன்- - spitting out; ஆஸனாத்-உதா³பதத்- - from his seat sprang up; உதா³யுத:⁴ - flourishing weapons; ஸமபதன்-அமும் - confronted him; பாண்ட³வா: - the Pandavas;
Translation
Just then, at once, the king of Chedi, sprang up from his seat hurling a string of abusive words to Thee, 'In this assembly, in the presence of great sages and kings, which fool is honouring this corrupt cowherd boy?' he exclaimed. Saying so he flourished his weapons and was soon confronted by the Paandavas.

நிவார்ய நிஜபக்ஷகா³னபி⁴முக²ஸ்யவித்³வேஷிண-
ஸ்த்வமேவ ஜஹ்ருஷே ஶிரோ த³னுஜதா³ரிணா ஸ்வாரிணா ।

நிவார்ய நிஜ-பக்ஷகா³ன் - deterring Thy allies; அபி⁴முக²ஸ்ய வித்³வேஷிண:- - confronting the adversary; த்வம்-ஏவ ஜஹ்ருஷே ஶிர: - Thou alone cut off head; த³னுஜ-தா³ரிணா ஸ்வ-அரிணா - the Asura's cutting Thy discus; ஜனு:-த்ரிதய-லப்³த⁴யா - in births three gaining; ஸதத-சிந்தயா - constantly thinking (of Thee); ஶுத்³த-⁴தீ⁴:-த்வயா ஸ - purified minded with Thee he; பர-ஏகதாம்-அத்⁴ருத - supreme union attained; யோகி³னாம் து³ர்லபா⁴ம் - to Yogis difficult to attain;
Translation
Thou deterred Thy allies, the Pandavas and Thyself cut off the head of the advancing adversary with Thy discus which cuts the Asuras. Chedi had gained a purified mind through his three births (as Hiranyakashipu, Raavana and Shishupa),where he was constantly thinking of Thee. Thus he attained the supreme union with Thee which is not easily attained by the Yogis.

தத: ஸுமஹிதே - then the great; த்வயா க்ரதுவரே - by Thee the highest sacrifice; நிரூடே⁴ ஜன:-யயௌ - being completed, people went away; ஜயதி த⁴ர்மஜ: - victory to Dharmaputra; ஜயதி க்ருஷ்ண - victory to Krishna; இதி-ஆலபன் - thus proclaiming; க²ல: ஸ து - wicked he indeed; ஸுயோத⁴ன து⁴தமனா:- - Duryodhana, jealous minded; ஸபத்ன-ஶ்ரியா - by the enemy's prosperity; மய-அர்பித-ஸபா⁴-முகே² - by Maya built the assembly hall in front (of that); ஸ்த²ல-ஜல-ப்⁴ரமாத்- - floor and water mistaking (for each other); அப்⁴ரமீத் - was confused;
Translation
Then the most holy and elaborate sacrifice, the Raajasooya Yagna being completed by Thee, the people returned loudly acclaiming Thee and Yudhishthira. The wicked Duryodhana's mind was full of jealousy at the sight of the enemy's prosperity. He was all the more confused when he mistook the floor for water and water for floor in front of the assembly hall which was built by the Asura's architect Maya, for the Pandavas.

ததா³ ஹஸிதமுத்தி²தம் த்³ருபத³னந்த³னாபீ⁴மயோ-
ரபாங்க³கலயா விபோ⁴ கிமபி தாவது³ஜ்ஜ்ரும்ப⁴யன் ।

Meaning
ததா³ ஹஸிதம்-உத்தி²தம் - then the laughter which arose; த்³ருபத³னந்த³னா-பீ⁴மயோ:- - of Draupadi and Bheema; அபாங்க-³கலயா - by the corner of the eyes glancing; விபோ⁴ கிமபி தாவத- - O Lord! A little then; உஜ்ஜ்ரும்ப⁴யன் - encouraging; த³த⁴ரா-ப⁴ர-னிராக்ருதௌ - the earth's burden to remove; ஸபதி³ நாம - immediately indeed; பீ³ஜம் வபன் - seed sowing; ஜனார்தன³ - O All pervading Lord!; மருத்புரீனிலய - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; பாஹி மாம்-ஆமயாத் - save me from ailments;
Translation
O Lord! Then a loud laughter arose from Draupadi and Bheema instigated somewhat by Thy side long glances. O All pervading Lord! Immediately indeed the seed was sown by Thee to rid the earth of its burden. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Save me from my ailments.
