ராமேத² கோ³குலக³தே ப்ரமதா³ப்ரஸக்தே
ஹூதானுபேதயமுனாத³மனே மதா³ந்தே⁴ ।
ஸ்வைரம் ஸமாரமதி ஸேவகவாத³மூடோ⁴
தூ³தம் ந்யயுங்க்த தவ பௌண்ட்³ரகவாஸுதே³வ: ॥1॥
Meaning
ராமே-அத² - Thou (when) Balaraam; கோ³குல-க³தே - had gone to Gokul; ப்ரமதா³-ப்ரஸக்தே - with the damsels sporting; ஹூத-அனுபேத- - when called , not coming; யமுனா-த³மனே - Yamunaa to subdue; மதா³ந்தே⁴ - intoxicated (Balaraam); ஸ்வைரம் ஸமாரமதி - at will sporting around; ஸேவக-வாத்³-மூட:⁴ - subordinate's advice misled by; தூ³தம் ந்யயுங்க்த - messenger sent; தவ - to Thee; பௌண்ட்³ரக-வாஸுதே³வ - Paundraka Vaasudeva;
Translation
Then when intoxicated Balaraam was sporting happily and at will with the damsels, he called over Yamuna to him. When Yamuna did not comply to his wishes he subdued her by turning her course. At that time Paundraka Vaasudeva misled by the ill advice of his subordinates, sent a messenger to Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
நாராயணோஹமவதீர்ண இஹாஸ்மி பூ⁴மௌ
த⁴த்ஸே கில த்வமபி மாமகலக்ஷணானி ।
உத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய தானி ஶரணம் வ்ரஜ மாமிதி த்வாம்
தூ³தோ ஜகா³த³ ஸகலைர்ஹஸித: ஸபா⁴யாம் ॥2॥
Meaning
நாராயண:-அஹம்- - Naaraayana am I; அவதீர்ண இஹ-அஸ்மி பூ⁴மௌ - descended here have I on earth; த⁴த்ஸே கில த்வம்-அபி - bear indeed you also; மாமக-லக்ஷணானி - my emblems; உத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய தானி - abandon them; ஶரணம் வ்ரஜ மாம்-இதி - surrender take unto me, thus; த்வாம் தூ³த: ஜகா³த³ - to Thee the messenger said; ஸகலை:-ஹஸித: - while every one laughed; ஸபா⁴யாம் - in the assembly;
Translation
I am Naaraayana and have descended here on this earth. It seems you too bear my emblems. Abandon them and surrender unto me.' Thus the messenger said to Thee to the amusement of all in the assembly.
ஶ்லோக:
தூ³தேத² யாதவதி யாத³வஸைனிகைஸ்த்வம்
யாதோ த³த³ர்ஶித² வபு: கில பௌண்ட்³ரகீயம் ।
தாபேன வக்ஷஸி க்ருதாங்கமனல்பமூல்ய-
ஶ்ரீகௌஸ்துப⁴ம் மகரகுண்ட³லபீதசேலம் ॥3॥
Meaning
தூ³தே-அத² யாதவதி - the messenger, when had departed; யாவத-³ஸைனிகை:-த்வம் - with the Yaadava army Thou; யாத: த³த³ர்ஶித² - went and saw; வபு: கில பௌண்ட்³ரகீயம் - the body indeed of Poundraka; தாபேன வக்ஷஸி - by heat on the chest; க்ருத-அங்கம்- - was made a mark; அனல்ப-மூல்ய- - not of little cost; ஶ்ரீ கௌஸ்துப⁴ம் - Shri Kaustubha; மகர-குண்டல³ - fish shaped ear ornaments; பீத-சேலம் - (and) yellow silk garment;
Translation
After the messenger had departed, Thou went with the Yaadava army to the capital of Paundraka. There Thou saw the ridiculous form of Paundraka's body marked by a burnt sign (representing Srivatsa) an invaluable gem round his neck (representing the Kaustubha) and wearing also fish shaped ear ornaments and a yellow silk garment.

காலாயஸம் நிஜஸுத³ர்ஶனமஸ்யதோஸ்ய
காலானலோத்கரகிரேண ஸுத³ர்ஶனேன ।
ஶீர்ஷம் சகர்தித² மமர்தி³த² சாஸ்ய ஸேனாம்
தன்மித்ரகாஶிபஶிரோபி சகர்த² காஶ்யாம் ॥4॥
Meaning
கால-ஆயாஸம் - of black iron; நிஜ-ஸுத³ர்ஶனம்- - his own Sudarshana; அஸ்யத:-அஸ்ய - throwing, his; கால-அனல-உத்கர- - cosmic fire sparks; கிரேண ஸுத³ர்ஶனேன் - emitted by the Sudarshana; ஶீர்ஷம் சகர்தித² - (his) head cut off; மமர்தி³த² ச அஸ்ய ஸேனாம் - and crushed his army; தத்-மித்ர-காஶிப- - his friend Kaashi's; ஶிர:-அபி சகர்த² - head also cut off; காஶ்யாம் - (and sent) into Kaashi;
Translation
Paundraka threw his own Sudershana made of black iron at Thee. Thou then cut off his head by Thy Sudarshana which was emitting sparks of cosmic fire, and crushed his army. Thou also cur off the head of his friend Kaashi and hurled it into Kaashi itself.
ஶ்லோக:
ஜால்யேன பா³லககி³ராபி கிலாஹமேவ
ஶ்ரீவாஸுதே³வ இதி ரூட⁴மதிஶ்சிரம் ஸ: ।
ஸாயுஜ்யமேவ ப⁴வதை³க்யதி⁴யா க³தோபூ⁴த்
கோ நாம கஸ்ய ஸுக்ருதம் கத²மித்யவேயாத் ॥5॥
Meaning
ஜால்யேன் - due to stupidity; பா³லக-கி³ரா-அபி - by immature words even; கில-அஹம்-ஏவ - indeed I only (am); ஶ்ரீ-வாஸுதே³வ இதி - Shree Vaasudeva, thus; ரூட⁴மதி:-சிரம் ஸ: - firmly believing for long he; ஸாயுஜ்யம்-ஏவ - union (with Thee) only; ப⁴வத்-ஐக்ய-தி⁴யா - with Thee oneness by thinking; க³த:-அபோ⁴த் - attained; க: நாம - who indeed (knows); கஸ்ய ஸுக்ருதம் - whose good deeds; கத²ம்-இதி-அவேயாத் - in which way (come about), knows;
Translation
It may be due to stupidity or due to believing the immature words of young people that Paundraka for long firmly believed in his mind that he himself was indeed Vaasudeva. This thought made him constantly be in oneness with Thee and so he attained Saayujya (union with Thee). Who knows whose good deeds lead him where and to what credit?

காஶீஶ்வரஸ்ய தனயோத² ஸுத³க்ஷிணாக்²ய:
ஶர்வம் ப்ரபூஜ்ய ப⁴வதே விஹிதாபி⁴சார: ।
க்ருத்யானலம் கமபி பா³ண்ரரணாதிபீ⁴தை-
ர்பூ⁴தை: கத²ஞ்சன வ்ருதை: ஸமமப்⁴யமுஞ்சத் ॥6॥
Meaning
காஶீ-ஈஶ்வரஸ்ய - Kaashi king's; தனய:-அத² - son then; ஸுத³க்ஷிண-ஆக்²ய: - Sudakshina by name; ஶர்வம் ப்ரபூஜ்ய - Shankara worshipping well; ப⁴வதே விஹித- - in The performed; அபி⁴சார: - black magic; க்ருத்யா-அனலம் - Krityaa fire; கம்-அபி - some (fierce and evil); பா³ண-ரண-அதி-பீ⁴தை:- - in Baana's battle very frightened; பூ⁴தை: கத²ஞ்சன வ்ருதை: - by those Bhootas somehow followed by; ஸமம்-அப்⁴யமுஞ்சத் - with them released;
Translation
Then the son of the king of Kaashi, called Sudakshina fervently worshipped Shankara. He performed black magic on Thee and released an evil fierce fire named Krityaa. He also somehow mobilised the Bhootas who were frightened during the battle Thou fought with Baana.

தாலப்ரமாணசரணாமகி²லம் த³ஹந்தீம்
க்ருத்யாம் விலோக்ய சகிதை: கதி²தோபி பௌரை: ।
த்³யூதோத்ஸவே கிமபி நோ சலிதோ விபோ⁴ த்வம்

Meaning
தால-ப்ரமாண-சரணாம்- - palm trees like long legged; அகி²லம் த³ஹந்தீம் - everything burning; க்ருத்யாம் விலோக்ய - Krityaa seeing; சகிதை: - by the frightened; கதி²த:-அபி பௌரை: - Thou being informed even by citizens; த்³யூத-உத்ஸவே - in the dice game; கிம்-அபி நோ சலித: - in the least not moving; விபோ⁴ த்வம் - O Lord Thou!; பார்ஶ்வஸ்த²ம்-ஆஶு - placed near by immediately; விஸஸர்ஜித² - deployed; கால-சக்ரம் - Sudarshana discus;
Translation
The frightened citizens saw the Krityaa fire with long legs like palm trees burning everything and they informed Thee of this. Thou without stirring from Thy seat at the game of dice in which Thou were engrossed, deployed O Lord! Thy Sudarshana discus which was ready at hand.

அப்⁴யாபதத்யமிததா⁴ம்னி ப⁴வன்மஹாஸ்த்ரே
ஹா ஹேதி வித்³ருதவதீ க²லு கோ⁴ரக்ருத்யா।
ரோஷாத் ஸுத³க்ஷிணமத³க்ஷிணசேஷ்டிதம் தம்
புப்லோஷ சக்ரமபி காஶிபுரீமதா⁴க்ஷீத் ॥8॥
Meaning
அப்⁴யாபததி- - dashing; அமித-தா⁴ம்னி - the ever brilliant; ப⁴வத்-மஹா-அஸ்த்ரே - Thy great weapon; ஹா ஹா-இதி - oh oh thus shouting; வித்³ருதவதீ - running away; க²லு கோ⁴ர-க்ருத்யா - indeed the terrible Krityaa; ரோஷாத் ஸுத³க்ஷிணம்- - in anger Sudakshina; அத³க்ஷிண-சேஷ்டிதம் தம் - the impious actioned, him; புப்லோஷ சக்ரம்-அபி - burnt down discus also; காஶி-புரீம்-அதா⁴க்ஷீத் - the Kaashi city burnt down;
Translation
Thy ever brilliant great weapon dashed towards Krityaa. The terrible Krityaa ran away shouting in distress and in anger burnt down the impious actioned Sudakshina himself. Thy Sudarshana discus in turn burnt down the city of Kaashi.

ஸ க²லு விவிதோ³ ரக்ஷோகா⁴தே க்ருதோபக்ருதி: புரா
தவ து கலயா ம்ருத்யும் ப்ராப்தும் ததா³ க²லதாம் க³த: ।
நரகஸசிவோ தே³ஶக்லேஶம் ஸ்ருஜன் நக³ராந்திகே
ஜ²டிதி ஹலினா யுத்⁴யன்னத்³தா⁴ பபாத தலாஹத: ॥9॥
Meaning
ஸ க²லு விவித:³ - he indeed Vividha; ரக்ஷோகா⁴தே - in the Raakshasa's killing; க்ருத-உபக்ருதி: புரா - had given help long ago; தவ து கலயா - by Thy part incarnation; ம்ருத்யும் ப்ராப்தும் - death to get; ததா³ க²லதாம் க³த: - then to wickedness took; நரக-ஸசிவ: - Narakaasura's minister; தே³ஶ-க்லேஶம் ஸ்ருஜன் - to public suffering causing; நக³ர-அந்திகே - near the town of Dwaarika; ஜ²டிதி ஹலினா - immediately with Balaraama; யுத்⁴யன்-அத்³தா⁴ - fighting with ease; பபாத-தல-ஆஹத: - fell down hit by the palm;
Translation
Long ago Vividha, the monkey who had helped Thee in killing the Raakshasas (during Thy incarnation as Raama) nursed the desire to be killed by Thy part incarnation. As a minister of Narakaasura, he took to evil ways and started creating sufferings for the people in the vicinity of Dwaarika. In a fight with Balaraama, he was killed with ease by a blow of Balaraam's hand in no time.

Meaning
ஸாம்ப³ம் - Saamba (who was); கௌரவ்ய-புத்ரீ-ஹரண- - (due to) Kuru's daughter's abducting; நியமிதம் - in captivity; ஸாந்த்வனா-அர்தீ² - to pacify; குரூணாம் யாத:- - the Kurus went; தத்-வாக்ய-ரோஷ- - by their talks enraged; உத்³த்⁴ருத-கரினக³ர: - lifted up Hastinaapur; மோசயாமாஸ ராம: - (and) released (Saamba) Balaraam; தே கா⁴த்யா: - they, the Kurus should be killed; பாண்ட³வேயை:-இதி - by the Paandavas, thus; யது³-ப்ருதனாம் - the Yadu army; ந-அமுச:-த்வம் ததா³னீம் - did not send Thee, then; தம் த்வாம் து³ர்போ³த⁴லீலம் - that Thou of unfathomable sportings; பவனபுரபதே - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; தாப-ஶாந்த்யை நிஷேவே - for the sufferings to be removed (I) worship;
Translation
Saamba was a captive of the Kurus because he had abducted their daughter. Balaraam went to the Kurus to pacify them but was enraged by their talks and lifted up Hastinaapur and released Saamba. Thou did not send the Yaadava army to confront them, because Thou wanted that the Kurus be killed by the Paandavas. Thou whose sporting ways are unfathomable, O Lord of Guruvaayur! I worship Thee so as to remove my sufferings.
