ஸங்கே⁴ ராஜ்ஞாம் ச மஞ்சானபி⁴யயுஷி க³தே நந்த³கோ³பேபி ஹர்ம்யம் ।
கம்ஸே ஸௌதா⁴தி⁴ரூடே⁴ த்வமபி ஸஹப³ல: ஸானுக³ஶ்சாருவேஷோ

Meaning
ப்ராத: - early next morning; ஸந்த்ரஸ்த-போ⁴ஜ- - at the frightened Kansa; க்ஷிதிபதி-வசஸா - king's command; ப்ரஸ்துதே மல்ல-தூர்யே - was commenced the wrestling by the beating of the drums; ஸங்கே⁴ ராஜ்ஞாம் ச - and the assembly of kings; மஞ்சான்-அபி⁴யயுஷி - to their seats had ascended; க³தே நந்த³கோ³பே- - Nandagopa had gone; அபி ஹர்ம்யம் - also to the palace; கம்ஸே-ஸௌத-⁴அதி⁴ரூடே⁴ - and Kansa had climbed to the top balcony of his palace; த்வம்-அபி ஸஹ-ப³ல: - Thou also along with Balaraam; ஸானுக:³-சாரு-வேஷ: - and with friends, attractively dressed; ரங்க-³த்³வாரம் க³த:-அபூ⁴: - to the gate of the arena went (which was); குபித-குவலயாபீட-³ - by the angered Kuvalayaapeeda; நாக-³அவலீட⁴ம் - the elephant obstructed;
Translation
Early the next morning, the frightened king Kansa commanded the commencement of the wrestling by the beating of the drums. The assembly of the kings ascended their respective seats to witness the wrestling. Nandagopa had also gone to the palace, and Kansa had also climbed to the top balcony of his palace. Thou along with Balaraama and Thy friends, dressed attractively approached the gates of the arena which was obstructed by the angered great elephant Kuvalayaapeeda.

பாபிஷ்டா²பேஹி மார்கா³த்³த்³ருதமிதி வசஸா நிஷ்டு²ரக்ருத்³த⁴பு³த்³தே⁴-

Meaning
பாபிஷ்ட-²அபேஹி - O wicked one, move away; மார்கா³த்-த்³ருதம்- - from the way quickly; இதி வசஸா - thus saying; நிஷ்டு²ர-க்ருத்³த-⁴பு³த்³தே⁴- - the cruel and angry minded; அம்ப³ஷ்ட²ஸ்ய ப்ரணோதா³த்- - mahout's prompting; அதி⁴க-ஜவ-ஜுஷா - more speed taking; ஹஸ்தினா க்³ருஹ்யமாண: - by the elephant (Thou) being caught; கேலீ-முக்த:-அத² - playfully releasing Thyself, then; கோ³பீ-குச-கலஶ- - the Gopikas' pot like breasts; சிர-ஸ்பர்தி⁴னம் - who was always competing; கும்ப⁴ம்-அஸ்ய வ்யாஹத்ய- - on this (elephant's) forehead striking a blow; அலீயதா²:-த்வம் - hid Thou; சரண-பு⁴வி - between its (elephant's) legs; புன:-னிர்க³த: - (Thou) again came out; வல்கு³-ஹாஸீ - sweetly smiling;
Translation
Thou said 'O wicked one move away from the way quickly'. At this the cruel and angry minded mahout prompted the elephant, who taking great speed caught Thee in its tusks. As though in play Thou released Thyself and struck a blow on the elephant's bulging forehead which rivalled with the Gopikas' pot like breasts. Thou then hid between the elephant's legs for sometime and then came out smiling sweetly.

Meaning
ஹஸ்த-ப்ராப்ய:-அபி- - in the hands grasped also; அக³ம்ய: ஜ²டிதி - unattainable hastily; முனிஜனஸ்ய- - of the sages; இவ தா⁴வன் - in the same manner, the running; கஜ³ேந்த்³ரம் க்ரீட³ன்- - elephant playfully; ஆபாத்ய பூ⁴மௌ - throwing down on the ground; புன:-அபி⁴பதத:-தஸ்ய - again when charging he was; த³ந்தம் ஸஜீவம் - the tooth, live; மூலாத்-உன்மூல்ய - from its roots pulling out; தத்-மூலக-³ - off its (the tusks') root; மஹித-மஹா- - priceless large; மௌக்திகானி- - pearls; ஆத்ம-மித்ரே - to Thy friend; ப்ராதா³:-த்வம் - Thou gave (saying); ஹாரம்-ஏபி⁴:- - necklace with these; லலித-விரசிதம் - beautifully made; ராதி⁴காயை - to Raadhaa; தி³ஶ-இதி - give, thus;
Translation
To the sages who meditate, just as Thou seem to be in their grasp but suddenly elude them, so also Thou escaped even when Thou were in the grasp of the elephant, running away just when it seemed to catch hold of Thee. Thou then playfully threw him on the ground. As he again rushed towards Thee, Thou pulled out its tooth from the root of its tusk. From there emerged priceless large pearls which Thou gave to Thy friend asking him to get them made into a beautiful necklace and give it to Raadhaa.

Meaning
க்³ருஹ்ணானம் த³ந்தம்-அம்ஸே - carrying the tusk on the shoulder; யுதம்-அத² ஹலினா - with Balaraam then; ரங்க³ம்-அங்க-³ - the arena, O Lord!; ஆவிஶந்தம் - entering; த்வாம் மங்க³ல்ய-அங்க-³ப⁴ங்கீ³- - Thee with auspicious beautiful form; ரப⁴ஸ-ஹ்ருத-மன:-லோசனா - forcefully drawing the mind and eyes; வீக்ஷ்ய லோகா: - seeing, the people (exclaimed); ஹம்ஹோ த⁴ன்ய ஹி நந்த:³ - Oh! Fortunate indeed is Nanda; நஹி நஹி பஶுபால-அங்க³னா - no no the Gopa women; நோ யஶோதா³ - no Yashodaa; நோ நோ த⁴ன்ய-ஈக்ஷணா: ஸ்ம:- - no no fortunate are we the onlookers; த்ரிஜக³தி - in the three worlds; வயம்-ஏவ-இதி - we alone (are fortunate) thus; ஸர்வே ஶஶம்ஸு: - everyone declared;
Translation
O Lord! Carrying the tusk on the shoulder, as Thou entered the arena with Balaraama, everyone's eyes and minds were forcefully drawn towards Thy auspicious form.The people exclaimed 'O fortunate indeed is Nanda, no no the Gopikaas, no Yashodaa, no no we the onlookers are fortunate, we alone are fortunate indeed in the three worlds.' Thus everyone declared.

Meaning
பூர்ணம் ப்³ரஹ்ம-ஏவ - The Complete Brahman Itself That Thou are; ஸாக்ஷாத்-னிரவதி⁴ - right in front, free from all limitations; பரம-ஆனந்த-³ஸாந்த்³ர-ப்ரகாஶம் - of the nature of supreme bliss and pure consciousness; கோ³பேஷு த்வம் வ்யலாஸீ:- - among the Gopas Thou shone; ந க²லு ப³ஹு-ஜனை:- - not indeed by many people; தாவத்-ஆவிதே³த:-அபூ⁴: - then (Thou) were known (as Brahamn); த்³ருஷ்ட்வா-அத² த்வாம் - then seeing Thee; தத்-இத³ம்-ப்ரத²மம்- - that this for the first time; உபக³தே புண்யகாலே - arising of the auspicious time; ஜன-ஔகா⁴: - hordes of people; பூர்ணானந்தா³ விபாபா: - full of bliss, becoming free from sin; ஸரஸம்-அபி⁴ஜகு³:- - joyfully narrated; த்வத்-க்ருதானி ஸ்ம்ருதானி - Thy deeds, which they remembered;
Translation
Not many people had the knowledge that Thou who shone and lived among the Gopas were Brahman incarnate and the essence of Supreme Bliss and Pure consciousness, free from all limitations. For many of them the auspicious time had arisen that they saw Thee for the first time and were full of bliss and became free from sin and joyfully narrated Thy deeds which they remembered.

சாணூரோ மல்லவீரஸ்தத³னு ந்ருபகி³ரா முஷ்டிகோ முஷ்டிஶாலீ
த்வாம் ராமம் சாபி⁴பேதே³ ஜ²டஜ²டிதி மிதோ² முஷ்டிபாதாதிரூக்ஷம் ।
உத்பாதாபாதனாகர்ஷணவிவித⁴ரணான்யாஸதாம் தத்ர சித்ரம்
ம்ருத்யோ: ப்ராகே³வ மல்லப்ரபு⁴ரக³மத³யம் பூ⁴ரிஶோ ப³ந்த⁴மோக்ஷான் ॥6॥
Meaning
சாணூர: மல்லவீர:- - Chaanoora, the champion wrestler; தத³னு ந்ருப-கி³ரா - thereafter, at the king's command; முஷ்டிக: முஷ்டிஶாலீ - Mushtika, the boxer; த்வாம் ராமம் ச-அபி⁴பேதே³ - Thee and Balaraama attacked; ஜ²டஜ²டிதி மித:² - loudly and mutually; முஷ்டி-பாத-அதி-ரூக்ஷம் - with fists and blows fierce; உத்பாத-ஆபாதன-ஆகர்ஷண- - throwing up, pushing down and dragging; விவித-⁴ரணானி- - (such) various methods of fight; ஆஸதாம் தத்ர சித்ரம் - which were there, what a wonder; ம்ருத்யோ: ப்ராக்-ஏவ - even before death; மல்லப்ரபு⁴:-அக³மத்-அயம் - this champion of wrestling attained; பூ⁴ரிஶ: ப³ந்த-⁴மோக்ஷான் - many times bondage and release;
Translation
At the king's command the champion wrestler Chaanoor and the boxer Mushtika attacked Thee and Balaraama. There were mutual and loud and fierce blows of fists, throwing up, pushing down and dragging and various such methods of fight were used. What a wonder it is that the leading wrestler Chaanoor, even before his death attained bondage and release many times at Thy hands.

ஹா தி⁴க் கஷ்டம் குமாரௌ ஸுலலிதவபுஷௌ மல்லவீரௌ கடோ²ரௌ
ந த்³ரக்ஷ்யாமோ வ்ரஜாமஸ்த்வரிதமிதி ஜனே பா⁴ஷமாணே ததா³னீம் ।
சாணூரம் தம் கரோத்³ப்⁴ராமணவிக³லத³ஸும் போத²யாமாஸிதோ²ர்வ்யாம்
பிஷ்டோபூ⁴ன்முஷ்டிகோபி த்³ருதமத² ஹலினா நஷ்டஶிஷ்டைர்த³தா⁴வே ॥7॥
Meaning
ஹா தி⁴க் கஷ்டம் - alas! How bad!; குமாரௌ ஸுலலித-வபுஷௌ - the two boys, tender bodied; மல்லவீரௌ கடோ²ரௌ - the (two) wrestlers are tough; ந த்³ரக்ஷ்யாம: - (we will) not see (this fight); வ்ரஜாம:-த்வரிதம்- - will go away quickly; இதி ஜனே பா⁴ஷமாணே - thus when people were talking; ததா³னீம் சாணூரம் தம் - then that Chaanoor; கர-உத்³ப்⁴ராமண- - (who was) by hand whirled around (by Thee); விக³லத்-அஸும் - (and so) whose life slipped away (he died); போத²யாமாஸித-²உர்வ்யாம் - (Thou) threw him on the earth; பிஷ்ட:-அபூ⁴த்-முஷ்டிக:-அபி - crushed was Mushtika also; த்³ருதம்-அத² ஹலினா - quickly then by Balaraama; நஷ்ட-ஶிஷ்டை:-த³தா⁴வே - other than the (two) killed ran away;
Translation
Alas! How bad! The two boys are tender bodied and the two wrestlers are tough. We will go away quickly and not see this unequal contest,' thus the people were talking among themselves. Just then Thou caught hold of Chaanoor's arm and whirled him round and round and threw him dead on the ground. Mushtika was also quickly crushed to death by Balaraama. The remaining wrestlers ran away out of fear.

கம்ஸ ஸம்வார்ய தூர்யம் க²லமதிரவித³ன் கார்யமார்யான் பித்ரும்ஸ்தா-
நாஹந்தும் வ்யாப்தமூர்தேஸ்தவ ச ஸமஶிஷத்³தூ³ரமுத்ஸாரணாய ।

Meaning
கம்ஸ ஸம்வார்ய தூர்யம் - Kansa, stopping the drums; க²ல-மதி:-அவித³ன் - (he) the wicked not knowing; கார்யம்- - what to do; ஆர்யான்-பித்ரூன்-தான்-ஆஹந்தும் - those respected parents to be killed; வ்யாப்தமூர்தே:-தவ - O Omniscient Lord! Thine (the parents); ச ஸமஶிஷத்- - and ordered; தூ³ரம்-உத்ஸாரணாய - to drive far away; ருஷ்ட: து³ஷ்ட-உக்திபி⁴: -த்வம் - annoyed by wicked words Thou; க³ருட:³-இவ கி³ரிம் - like Garuda flying to (the top of a ) mountain; மஞ்சம்-அஞ்சன்- - jumping to the throne (of Kansa); உத³ஞ்சத்-க²ட்³க-³வ்யாவல்க-³ - raised up sword brandishing; து³ஸ்ஸங்க்³ரஹம்-அபி - (so) difficult to catch hold of (such Kansa); ச ஹடா²த் ப்ராக்³ரஹீ:- - with determination (Thou) caught hold of; ஔக்³ரஸேனிம் - that son of Ugrasena;
Translation
Kansa asked for the drums to be stopped. Then the wicked one not knowing what to do ordered for Thy respected parents to be killed. O Omnipresent Lord! He also ordered that Thou be driven away to a remote place. Thou were very annoyed at his wicked words. Thou leaped with determination to the throne of Kansa to the highest balcony of his palace, like a Garuda ascends to the top of the mountain, and gripped him, the son of Ugrasena, though he was difficult to catch hold of because he resisted with brandishing a sword.

ஸத்³யோ நிஷ்பிஷ்டஸந்தி⁴ம் பு⁴வி நரபதிமாபாத்ய தஸ்யோபரிஷ்டா-

ஸாயுஜ்யம் த்வத்³வதோ⁴த்தா² பரம பரமியம் வாஸனா காலனேமே: ॥9॥
Meaning
ஸத்³ய: நிஷ்பிஷ்ட-ஸந்தி⁴ம் - immediately crushing his joints; பு⁴வி நரபதிம்-ஆபாத்ய - on the ground the king hurling; தஸ்ய-உபரிஷ்டாத்- - on top of him; த்வயி-ஆபாத்யே ததா³-ஏவ - Thou falling at that very moment; த்வத்-உபரி பதிதா - on Thee fell; நாகினாம் புஷ்ப வ்ருஷ்டி: - from the gods, shower of flowers; கிம் கிம் ப்³ரூம:-ததா³னீம் - what all should I say, at that time; ஸததம்-அபி பி⁴யா - always out of fear; த்வத்-க³த-ஆத்மா ஸ பே⁴ஜே - thinking of you he attained; ஸாயுஜ்யம் த்வத்-வத-⁴உத்தா² - union with Thee, arising from Thee killing him; பரம பரம-இயம் - O Supreme Being! This alone; வாஸனா காலனேமே: - was the vaasanaa (past life's tendency), of Kaalanemi;
Translation
Immediately crushing his joints Thou hurled the king on the ground and jumped on his body. At that very moment the gods in heaven showered flowers on Thee. What shall I say! O Supreme Being! Though Kansa always remembered Thee out of fear, he attained union with Thee as a result of Thou killing him. This was due to his vaasanaa (past life's tendency) as Kaalanemi (in his previous birth) who was killed by Thee.

Meaning
தத்-ப்⁴ராத்ருன்-அஷ்ட பிஷ்ட்வா - his eight brothers killing; த்³ருதம்-அத² - quickly then; பிதரௌ ஸன்னமன்- - prostrating before the parents; உக்³ரஸேனம் க்ருத்வா ராஜானம்- - Ugrasena making the king; உச்சை:-யது³குலம்-அகி²லம் - greatly the whole of the Yaadava clan; மோத³யன் காமதா³னை: - making happy by giving what they desired; ப⁴க்தானாம்-உத்தமம் - and the greatest of devotees; ச-உத்³த⁴வம்- - Uddhava; அமரகு³ரோ:-ஆப்த-னீதிம் - who had received the ethics from the preceptors of gods (Brahaspati); ஸகா²யம் லப்³த்⁴வா - getting as friend; துஷ்ட: நக³ர்யாம் - satisfied (resided) in the capital city; பவனபுரபதே - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ருந்தி⁴ மே ஸர்வ-ரோகா³ன் - remove my all afflictions;
Translation
Quickly then Thou killed Kansa's eight brothers. Prostrating before Thy parents, Thou made Ugrasena the king and made the whole Yaadava clan greatly happy by giving them what they desired. Thou then got Uddhava as friend who was the greatest of devotees and had received instructions into the laws of ethics from the preceptor of gods, Brihaspati. Thou resided in the capital with satisfaction. O Lord of Guruvaayur! deign to remove all my afflictions.
