கதா³சித்³கோ³பாலான் விஹிதமக²ஸம்பா⁴ரவிப⁴வான்
நிரீக்ஷ்ய த்வம் ஶௌரே மக⁴வமத³முத்³த்⁴வம்ஸிதுமனா: ।
விஜானந்னப்யேதான் வினயம்ருது³ நந்தா³தி³பஶுபா-
நப்ருச்ச:² கோ வாயம் ஜனக ப⁴வதாமுத்³யம இதி ॥1॥
Meaning
கதா³சித்- - once; கோ³பாலான் - (when) the cowherds; விஹித-மக-² - (had) collected for the Yagya; ஸம்பா⁴ர-விப⁴வான் - the requisite materials many (of them); நிரீக்ஷ்ய த்வம் - seeing this, Thou; ஶௌரே - O Shauri!; மக⁴வ-மத³ம்- - Indra's pride; உத்³த்⁴வம்ஸிது-மனா: - to humble, desiring; விஜானந-அபி-ஏதான் - knowing though these (preparations); வினய-ம்ருது³ - politely and softly; நந்த-³ஆதி³-பஶுபான்- - to Nanda and other cowherds; அப்ருச்ச:² - asked; க: வா-அயம் - (for) what or this; ஜனக ப⁴வதாம்- - O Father! (is) your; உத்³யம இதி - effort thus;
Translation
O Shauri! Once the cowherds were collecting the requisite material to perform a Yagya to appease Indra. Thou wanted to humble the pride of Indra. In spite of knowing what the preparations were for, Thou, in full humility and politeness asked Nanda and the other cowherds, 'O Father what is this your effort for?'
ஶ்லோக:
ப³பா⁴ஷே நந்த³ஸ்த்வாம் ஸுத நனு விதே⁴யோ மக⁴வதோ
மகோ² வர்ஷே வர்ஷே ஸுக²யதி ஸ வர்ஷேண ப்ருதி²வீம் ।
ந்ருணாம் வர்ஷாயத்தம் நிகி²லமுபஜீவ்யம் மஹிதலே
விஶேஷாத³ஸ்மாகம் த்ருணஸலிலஜீவா ஹி பஶவ: ॥2॥
Meaning
ப³பா⁴ஷே நந்த:³-த்வாம் - said Nanda to Thee; ஸுத நனு - O son! Indeed; விதே⁴ய: மக⁴வத: - has to be performed for Indra; மக:² வர்ஷே வர்ஷே - Yagya every year; ஸுக²யதி ஸ - gives happiness he; வர்ஷேண ப்ருதி²வீம் - by rain to the earth; ந்ருணாம் வர்ஷாயத்தம் - of human beings, on rain depends; நிகி²லம்-உபஜீவ்யம் - all livelihood; மஹிதலே - on the earth; விஶேஷாத்-அஸ்மாகம் - particularly for us; த்ருண-ஸலில-ஜீவா - (on) grass (and) water live; ஹி பஶவ: - indeed the cows;
Translation
Nanda told Thee, 'O son! A yagya has to be performed for Indra every year. He gives happiness to the earth by rain. The livelihood of all human beings on earth depends on rain. Especially so for us, because our cattle live on grass and water alone.'
ஶ்லோக:
இதி ஶ்ருத்வா வாசம் பிதுரயி ப⁴வானாஹ ஸரஸம்
தி⁴கே³தன்னோ ஸத்யம் மக⁴வஜனிதா வ்ருஷ்டிரிதி யத் ।
அத்³ருஷ்டம் ஜீவானாம் ஸ்ருஜதி க²லு வ்ருஷ்டிம் ஸமுசிதாம்
மஹாரண்யே வ்ருக்ஷா: கிமிவ ப³லிமிந்த்³ராய த³த³தே ॥3॥
Meaning
இதி ஶ்ருத்வா - this hearing; வாசம் பிது:- - words of father; அயி ப⁴வான்-ஆஹ - O Thou said; ஸரஸம் - (with) reasoning; தி⁴க்-ஏதத்-னோ ஸத்யம் - oh this is not true; மக⁴வ-ஜனிதா - by Indra (is) generated; வ்ருஷ்டி:-இதி யத் - rain, to say so; அத்³ருஷ்டம் ஜீவானாம் - unseen (past actions) of the living beings; ஸ்ருஜதி க²லு - generates indeed; வ்ருஷ்டிம் ஸமுசிதாம் - the rain required; மஹா-அரண்யே - in the big forest; வ்ருக்ஷா: கிம்-இவ - the trees what like; ப³லிம்-இந்த்³ராய - offerings for Indra; த³த³தே - (do) give?;
Translation
O Lord! Hearing this, Thou said with sweet reasoning, 'Oh no, this is not true, to say that the rain is generated by Indra. Rain is generated by the unseen past actions of the living beings, as required. In this big forest, what kind of offerings do the trees give to Indra?'
ஶ்லோக:
இத³ம் தாவத் ஸத்யம் யதி³ஹ பஶவோ ந: குலத⁴னம்
ததா³ஜீவ்யாயாஸௌ ப³லிரசலப⁴ர்த்ரே ஸமுசித: ।
ஸுரேப்⁴யோப்யுத்க்ருஷ்டா நனு த⁴ரணிதே³வா: க்ஷிதிதலே
ததஸ்தேப்யாராத்⁴யா இதி ஜக³தி³த² த்வம் நிஜஜனான் ॥4॥
Meaning
இத³ம் தாவத் ஸத்யம் - this then is true; யத்-இஹ பஶவ: - that here the cows; ந: குல-த⁴னம் - (are our) tribe's wealth; தத்-ஆஜீவ்யாய- - so for their livelihood; அஸௌ-ப³லி: - this offering; அசல-ப⁴ர்த்ரே - to the great mountain; ஸமுசித: - is appropriate; ஸுரேப்⁴ய:-அபி- - than the gods also; உத்க்ருஷ்டா நனு - greater are indeed; த⁴ரணி-தே³வா: - holy men; க்ஷிதிதலே தத:- - on the earth, therefore; தே-அபி-ஆராத்⁴யா - they also deserve to be worshipped; இதி ஜக³தி³த² த்வம் - thus said Thou; நிஜ-ஜனான் - to Thy people;
Translation
Thou said to Thy people,'this is true that the cows are the wealth of our tribe. This mountain (Govardhana) provides them with their requisite grass and water. So the offerings should be made to the mountain. The holy men on the earth are indeed more great than the gods, so they also deserve to be worshipped.'

ப⁴வத்³வாசம் ஶ்ருத்வா ப³ஹுமதியுதாஸ்தேபி பஶுபா:
த்³விஜேந்த்³ரானர்சந்தோ ப³லிமத³து³ருச்சை: க்ஷிதிப்⁴ருதே ।
வ்யது⁴: ப்ராத³க்ஷிண்யம் ஸுப்⁴ருஶமனமன்னாத³ரயுதா-
ஸ்த்வமாத³ஶ்ஶைலாத்மா ப³லிமகி²லமாபீ⁴ரபுரத: ॥5॥
Meaning
ப⁴வத்-வாசம் ஶ்ருத்வா - Thy words hearing; ப³ஹு-மதி-யுதா:- - with high regards; தே-அபி பஶுபா: - they also, the cowherds; த்³விஜேந்த்³ரான்-அர்சந்த: - holy men worshipping; ப³லிம்-அத³து³:- - offerings gave; உச்சை: க்ஷிதிப்⁴ருதே - richly / plentifully to the mountain; வ்யது⁴: ப்ராத³க்ஷிண்யம் - performed circumambulation; ஸுப்⁴ருஶம்-அனமன்- - again and again prostrated; ஆத³ரயுதா:- - with great reverence; த்வம்-ஆத:³ - Thou ate; ஶைல-ஆத்மா - (becoming) the mountain's soul; ப³லிம்-அகி²லம்- - the offerings entire; ஆபீ⁴ர-புரத: - in the cowherds' front;
Translation
Hearing Thy words the cowherds also worshipped the holy men with high regards. They made rich and plentiful offerings to the mountain. They performed circumambulation and prostrated again and again with great reverence. Thou becoming the soul of the mountain ate all the entire offerings in front of the cowherds.
ஶ்லோக:
அவோசஶ்சைவம் தான் கிமிஹ விதத²ம் மே நிக³தி³தம்
கி³ரீந்த்³ரோ நன்வேஷ ஸ்வப³லிமுபபு⁴ங்க்தே ஸ்வவபுஷா ।
அயம் கோ³த்ரோ கோ³த்ரத்³விஷி ச குபிதே ரக்ஷிதுமலம்
ஸமஸ்தானித்யுக்தா ஜஹ்ருஷுரகி²லா கோ³குலஜுஷ: ॥6॥
Meaning
அவோச:-ச-ஏவம் தான் - said and thus to them; கிம்-இஹ விதத²ம் மே - what there false by me; நிக³தி³தம் - was said; கி³ரீந்த்³ர: நனு ஏஷ - the mountain indeed this; ஸ்வ-ப³லிம்-உபபு⁴ங்க்தே - his offerings (given to him) is eating; ஸ்வ-வபுஷா - by his own body; அயம் கோ³த்ர: - this mountain; கோ³த்ரத்³விஷி ச - (when) the enemy of the mountains (Indra); குபிதே - gets angry; ரக்ஷிதும்-அலம் - to protect is enough; ஸமஸ்தான்- - everybody; இதி-உக்தா - thus being said to; ஜஹ்ருஷு:-அகி²லா - were happy all of them; கோ³குல-ஜுஷ: - Gokula's inhabitants;
Translation
Thou told them 'Was I wrong? This mountain has physically consumed all our offerings. Even if the enemy of mountains, Indra is angry, this mountain is capable of protecting everyone.' All the inhabitants of Gokula were happy on hearing this.

பரிப்ரீதா யாதா: க²லு ப⁴வது³பேதா வ்ரஜஜுஷோ
வ்ரஜம் யாவத்தாவன்னிஜமக²விப⁴ங்க³ம் நிஶமயன் ।
ப⁴வந்தம் ஜானந்னப்யதி⁴கரஜஸாக்ராந்தஹ்ருத³யோ
ந ஸேஹே தே³வேந்த்³ரஸ்த்வது³பரசிதாத்மோன்னதிரபி ॥7॥
Meaning
பரிப்ரீதா - in jubilation; யாதா: க²லு - went indeed; ப⁴வத்-உபேதா - you accompanying; வ்ரஜஜுஷ: வ்ரஜம் - the inhabitants of Vraja to Vraja; யாவத்-தாவத்- - when then; நிஜ-மக-²விப⁴ங்க³ம் - (his) own Yagya stoppage; நிஶமயன் - hearing; ப⁴வந்தம் ஜானந்-அபி- - Thee knowing also; அதி⁴க-ரஜஸா- - (because of) preponderance of Rajoguna; ஆக்ராந்த-ஹ்ருத³ய: - with an overcome mind; ந ஸேஹே தே³வேந்த்³ர:- - did not tolerate Indra; த்வத்-உபரசித- - by Thee ordained; ஆத்ம-உன்னதி:-அபி - his own exhaultation also;
Translation
The inhabitants of Vraja, in a jubilant mood returned to Vraja with Thee. Then, when Indra heard of his yagya being stopped he did not tolerate it because his mind was overcome by the preponderance of Rajo Guna. Indra knew Thee well and was also aware that his own high position was ordained by Thee, yet he was enraged.
ஶ்லோக:
மனுஷ்யத்வம் யாதோ மது⁴பி⁴த³பி தே³வேஷ்வவினயம்
வித⁴த்தே சேன்னஷ்டஸ்த்ரித³ஶஸத³ஸாம் கோபி மஹிமா ।
ததஶ்ச த்⁴வம்ஸிஷ்யே பஶுபஹதகஸ்ய ஶ்ரியமிதி
ப்ரவ்ருத்தஸ்த்வாம் ஜேதும் ஸ கில மக⁴வா து³ர்மத³னிதி⁴: ॥8॥
Meaning
மனுஷ்யத்வம் யாத: - human form taking; மது⁴பி⁴த்-அபி - the destroyer of the demon Madhu (MahaaVishnu) also; தே³வேஷு-அவினயம் - towards the gods disrespect; வித⁴த்தே சேத்- - shows if; நஷ்ட:-த்ரித³ஶஸத³ஸாம் - is lost of all the gods; க:-அபி மஹிமா - what ever prestige; தத:-ச த்⁴வம்ஸிஷ்யே - and so will destroy; பஶுப-ஹதகஸ்ய - (this) lowly cowherd's; ஶ்ரியம்-இதி - all prosperity, thus; ப்ரவ்ருத்த:-த்வாம் ஜேதும் - setting out, Thou to win; ஸ கில மக⁴வா - he indeed Indra; து³ர்மத-³னிதி⁴: - false pride full of;
Translation
Indra was full of false pride and set out to win Thee. He reasoned that even if it was Vishnu himself, the slayer of Madhu, in human form, if he shows disrespect to the gods, what ever their prestige, would be lost. So he made up his mind to destroy the lowly cowherd (Krishna) and all his prosperity, and to win Thee.

த்வதா³வாஸம் ஹந்தும் ப்ரலயஜலதா³னம்ப³ரபு⁴வி
ப்ரஹிண்வன் பி³ப்⁴ராண; குலிஶமயமப்⁴ரேப⁴க³மன: ।
ப்ரதஸ்தே²ன்யைரந்தர்த³ஹனமருதா³த்³யைவிம்ஹஸிதோ
ப⁴வன்மாயா நைவ த்ரிபு⁴வனபதே மோஹயதி கம் ॥9॥
Meaning
த்வத்-ஆவாஸம் ஹந்தும் - Thy residence (Vraja) to destroy; ப்ரலய-ஜலதா³ன்- - deluge causing clouds; அம்ப³ர-பு⁴வி - in the skies' surface; ப்ரஹிண்வன் - releasing; பி³ப்⁴ராண: குலிஶம்- - taking thunderbolt; அயம்-அப்⁴ரேப-⁴க³மன: - this (Indra) Airaavat riding; ப்ரதஸ்தே²-அன்யை:-அந்த:- - set out with others, inside (in their minds); த³ஹன-மருத-ஆத்³யை:- - (like) fire (Agni), wind (Vaayu) etc.,; விஹம்ஸித: - being scorned; ப⁴வத்-மாயா - Thy Maayaa; ந-ஏவ - does not indeed; த்ரிபு⁴வனபதே - O Lord of three worlds; மோஹயதி கம் - delude whom;
Translation
To destroy Thy residence Vraja, Indra released deluge causing clouds in the skies. He took along thunderbolt and set out riding on his white elephant Airaavata. He was accompanied by other gods, fire(Agni), wind(Vaayu),etc., who slyly scorned him. O Lord of three worlds! whom does not Thy Maayaa afflict?

ஸுரேந்த்³ர: க்ருத்³த⁴ஶ்சேத் த்³விஜகருணயா ஶைலக்ருபயா-
ப்யனாதங்கோஸ்மாகம் நியத இதி விஶ்வாஸ்ய பஶுபான் ।

மருத்³கே³ஹாதீ⁴ஶ ப்ரணுத³ முரவைரின் மம க³தா³ன் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஸுரேந்த்³ர: க்ருத்³த:⁴-சேத் - Indra gets angry, in case; த்³விஜ-கருணயா - by the holy men's grace; ஶைல-க்ருபயா-அபி- - by the mountain's grace also; அனாதங்க:- - fearlessness; அஸ்மாகம் - is ours; நியத இதி - certainly thus; விஶ்வாஸ்ய பஶுபான் - convincing the cowherds; அஹோ - O Alas!; கிம்-ன-ஆயாத: - what, he has not come (yet); கி³ரிபி⁴த்³-இதி - Indra thus; ஸஞ்சிந்த்ய நிவஸன் - thinking ,waiting; மருத்³கே³ஹாதீ⁴ஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ப்ரணுத³ முரவைரின் - eradicate, O Slayer of Mura; மம க³தா³ன் - my ailments;
Translation
Even if Indra is angry, we are fearless by the grace of the holy men and by the grace of the mountain,' saying so Thou certainly convinced the cowherds. Then Thou stood waiting and wondering why Indra had not yet come. O Lord of Guruvaayur! O Slayer of Mura! do eradicate my ailments.
